Speaker 1 (00:06):
Hey, and welcome on board. Everyone, get on the board.
It's time for three guys before the game. Our summer
series continues. And have I have I ever said we
got a good one for you?

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Oh?

Speaker 3 (00:21):
No, not once.

Speaker 4 (00:23):
How many episodes is this?

Speaker 1 (00:24):
This makes six hundred and forty three. If you're scoring
at home, getting close to the end, aren't we man
not going to see eight hundred so this is closer
to the end.

Speaker 4 (00:35):
But the point was, that's a lot of episodes. When
we finally got a guess that probably should have been
here about three hundred episodes ago.

Speaker 3 (00:41):
He was busy, Yeah, he was busy.

Speaker 1 (00:45):
Lucky we We're lucky. We have him in on ready
to go for today's show after he spent probably a
good half of an hour of treating Kerchieval before we
started to roll tape. He it was kind of embarrassing
for the others of us here.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
Wait, why was it embarrassing?

Speaker 4 (01:04):
Randy Special trying to sit down for the show, and
you're over there, you're making him work. He's not here to.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Work, thank you. Our special guest is WUV retired WVU
basketball athletics trainer Randy Meta. This is going to be
good because if you're a Mountaineer fan. You've heard his
name countless times, quite honestly, Jee Fleming. Jack Fleming said
his name more than I would.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
Jack.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
Jack would get at least six obligatory Randy meta references
in each game broadcast.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
Now trainer.

Speaker 1 (01:39):
Is on the floor and Randy is holding a towel.
He get Randy, gety.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
You should get a couple in there.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Yeah, I do, I do, and I woll we'll talk
about it. Three guys brought to us by Jan Dill's
attorneys at law. They won't take no for an answer.

Can you eat two Tutors biscuits in one sitting?

Speaker 5 (03:00):
I think?

Speaker 4 (03:00):
So?

Speaker 1 (03:00):
Okay, good, you better get up on that mike. See quiet.
I need to give background here. Let me tell you
who this dude is. This young man, this young man
is that young man over there there is Randy Metter.
He is the outgoing basketball athletic trainer, certified athletic trainer

(03:22):
for West Virginia basketball, and he has an historic spot
all time in WUV basketball in that he did the
job longer than any athletic trainer in WVU history, longer
than Whitey Gwinn, longer than dwarfed Whitey Gwynn. As far

(03:43):
as years of total service. I looked it up, did you?
So Randy has just finished year forty or forty one,
however you want to count it. So this is the
beauty and this is the magic of this show. So
you're going to go back into who basically year six

(04:04):
of Gail Catlet, so we're talking eighty four season. So
he has been here man through Gail Catlet, who had
a twenty plus year run, into John Bline, into Bob Huggins,
into Darren Devrees the quickest tenure and.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
No Dan Dockets.

Speaker 4 (04:26):
You don't forget Dan dockis well back up Josh Eiler.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Josh Eiler for the introm season. So you get the
perspective on this. This is a guy who has literally
seen and been a part of WVU basketball for forty
plus years.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
When is the book coming out?

Speaker 1 (04:43):
Yeah, that'd be good. Now, now let me just say this.
This is the other little dirty, unknown secret about this
side of the business, and that is this. If you
think that the athletic trainer like his job is he
sits toward the end of the bench and go out
onto the floor when a player is injured, that would

(05:04):
be like saying, I don't know that that there are
fish in the sea. This is a job that begins
before anyone comes into the building, doesn't end until everyone's
out of the building. And it literally is it literally
is you're on call three hundred and sixty five days
a year. There is no off season because for a

(05:25):
bunch of different reasons. So with that all as the
premise to this conversation, like, congratulations first on your on
your on your retirement, well incredibly well deserved. I mean,
I'm tired for you when I think when I think
about when I think about what you have gone through

(05:46):
through the years. But it's been it's been a fascinating run,
hasn't it, of what you were able to get into
and experience and see.

Speaker 5 (05:53):
Oh, definitely, definitely. I mean I still think the forty
years is flown by so uh yeah, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
A lot of great games, a lot of great trips,
great people be around.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
I can't believe he's retiring. I mean, it's just because
he's like an institution. You'd see him.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
It's Randy Matter. Yeah, it's kind of like mountaineer Randy Metder.
Like mountaineers here, so is Randy.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
Medder mountaineer changes frequently he.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
Does, he does Okay, so let's jump all the way
into the background. You've got an interesting background in that
your dad was not an athletics trainer, but you were
born into the college world environment. You're from the state
of Ohio, Oxford, Ohio, Miami of Ohio. So how does

(06:37):
a nice guy like you get into a business like this.

Speaker 5 (06:40):
So my dad was a audio visual manager. He did
photos and still shots and everything back with Miami for
He did it for I think thirty five three eight
years or something.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
So the metas worked long term. They don't go, Yeah,
they're not tempted.

Speaker 5 (06:56):
I would say I got a lot of my work
ethic from him, right everything.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
But uh so.

Speaker 5 (07:01):
You know, as you're starting middle school or whatever, but
you know, you can go hang out with Miami football.
Miami basketball is a cool place to be because he
looked up to them, and uh, you know, so I'm
hanging out with him, helping carrying his cases because it
was old school so that you know, the old.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
Equipment, everything heavy were big. Yeah, everything's heavy.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (07:24):
And the athletic trainer at Miami he just kind of
saw me and just kind of grabbed me and said, well,
you know, if you're just hanging out, why don't you
come over here and experience this and see what you think.
And he had summer camps and stuff like that.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
So you're middle schoolish.

Speaker 5 (07:35):
Now that was middle schoolish, but yeah, when I was
into high school, then yeah, there was summer camps and
things like that because middle school is too young. But
you know, he just kind of took me under his wing,
and I was like, well, this is a heck a
lot cooler than watching my dad take pictures, you know.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
So so you start hanging out with him.

Speaker 5 (07:53):
So yeah, I started hanging out with Ken Wolford at
that time and went to the summer camps, and I
mean I was all in, really fascinated me, and I
just really enjoyed it. So, you know, I go to
school at Miami and then you know, I, like I said,
I kind of trusted him. He took me on her wing.
I was like, you know, the next step because I
knew what I wanted to do to get to the
college setting.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
And you know, you need to get a master's.

Speaker 1 (08:15):
So you knew you wanted to be a collegiate athletic trainer.
Oh yeah, okay, okay.

Speaker 5 (08:19):
And he's like, well, I think the best thing for
you to do? Would you go to WU for grad school?
So you know, off the interview.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
Why does he send you here?

Speaker 5 (08:28):
He had some previous students that came here and he
knew Spike and everything too.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
And okay, so Spike is John Spiker, who I identify
as the godfather of athletic training curriculum at DOUBLEV. Definitely
he was the guy.

Speaker 5 (08:41):
Yeah, yeah, so you know, you know, go learn more
from him, and then you know, just right place, right time.
As I was finishing up my GA year men's basketball
athletic trainer, he left and they were going on a
European tour, so they needed to hire someone quickly.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
So that was me.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
So who was the trainer you proceeded?

Speaker 2 (09:00):
Jim Rudd? Jim Rudd, Yeah, he was here just one
year now.

Speaker 1 (09:03):
Jack Broddigum was around too, right.

Speaker 5 (09:05):
Right, yeah, just before he was with them, I think
two years prior to that. So and then Jack had
left to go to the Army to get his PT degree.

Speaker 1 (09:15):
So you're a g A and they just elevate you
to the.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
As interim the first year. Yeah, interim, you know.

Speaker 1 (09:21):
That's a big that's a okay, So to put that
into perspective, like that isn't happening anymore.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
Nah, I don't see that.

Speaker 5 (09:28):
Yeah, we would, I hate say frown up for that,
but it'd be a yeah, it would be a very
unique situation. But again, you know, Jim quit and we
were going on European tour pretty soon, so there wasn't
a lot of time to find someone. So, you know,
Coach Catlet interviewed me and everything and said, okay, but
they put me an interim status.

Speaker 2 (09:47):
But then obviously I worked out.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
Do you remember the interview with Gail Katlet very thoroughly?

Speaker 5 (09:51):
Uh another media person kind of beat you to the
punch on that.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
But that's okay. But uh so I'm over there interviewing
him and uh, oh you're from Miami. Me, well, you know,
oh yeah, we don't like Miami. You know, he's a
hard time.

Speaker 5 (10:07):
And then you know, as a g A, I was
a ga over at football football, you know, the basketball.

Speaker 2 (10:13):
You know, this this interview is going really well.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
You know, for those that don't know football coach, there's
this fremeny thing that goes on. Football coaches always pretend
that they like the basketball coach. The basketball coach always
pretends that they like the football coach. But when they're
away from each other, they just kill each other's probably
like I don't know why the hell football gets all
the damn money, right, and like and football guys are going, like,
what tell those guys doing over there? What do they

(10:36):
need that for? They only have fifteen guys. That's that's
the world that this is anyway.

Speaker 2 (10:40):
So the interview is going really well. You know, I'm
sitting here, this is great.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
You know, guy's crushing me.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (10:46):
But then Lester Row walks in and coach you know
Lester of course, yeah, the great guy. So, uh, Lester,
how you doing? You know he goes, oh, yeah, yeah,
I know, Randy, he's a great guy. You know when
who's that football was back then the coliseum that side
of campus had no weight room. Came over and lifted
at football with Al Johnson. He goes, yeah, whenever we

(11:08):
need anything, Randy will help us out. You know, you
do this or do whatever. And you know, I just
I like football, I like basketball. I like sports all
building people out. So you know, I knew Lester and everything.
And uh so Lester gave me a pat on the
back and you know, voted confidence and everything else.

Speaker 2 (11:24):
And then after that it was all good.

Speaker 4 (11:26):
You were in with the you were a made man.
Lester got you in there, les.

Speaker 5 (11:29):
Yeah, yeah did yeah, because that interview was going really well.

Speaker 2 (11:32):
You know, I had to be honest. Yeah, I'm from Miami, Yeah,
was my GA physician, was at football. But I mean
I know basketball too.

Speaker 5 (11:38):
I mean played a lot of basketball and worked basketball
in undergrad.

Speaker 4 (11:42):
So back up a little bit here when you said
you were interested in it right away, so that was
obviously not something you thought about. You didn't even probably
know that was a career. What interested you specifically.

Speaker 5 (11:55):
The ability to be able to help, uh, you know,
athletes recover, understand the body anatomy and I have no
injuries and you know, figure this out and work as
a team as an athletic trainers and team physicians and
everything like that.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
I just found it very intriguing.

Speaker 1 (12:12):
See, I don't know why you would ask him that question,
because he just what he just said is exactly what
he did before the show started. He still loves, he
still loves to help people. Like copy said, I've got
this I band situation. He goes out there, he gets
on his phone, he shows him what roller he's supposed
to use. He gives him exercised, so you still love
the actual.

Speaker 5 (12:33):
Yeah, I'm on this aspect of it. But we're hopping
our bikers, so you know, bikers stick together.

Speaker 3 (12:38):
Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 4 (12:41):
It's interesting about what the reason I asked that is
because it's it's another example. How many times have we
done this and talked to people there's a single individual
that kind of grabs you and says, hey, take a
look at this in an area that Randy may never
have seen. You could have bypassed that and never seen
that area. And yet it not only turns into a
job and a career, but something you really love. That

(13:02):
that those stories always are remarkable to me. That that's
that's a lot of times all it takes is one
person just saying, hey, take a look at this, seminal moment.
Seminal moment you're off and running.

Speaker 2 (13:12):
Yeah, no, very true.

Speaker 5 (13:14):
And then uh, I've been reflecting, you know a lot recently,
and you know the saying, you know, if you find
what you enjoy to do, you never work a day
in life. And that and that's that's another thing. You know,
when forty years goes like, yeah, you got to figure
you were in the right profession. I never I still.
You know, I'm going to work going up and down
the Colisseum steps. You know that never got old or whatever.

Speaker 3 (13:36):
So, yeah, you're gonna you're gonna miss it, aren't you.

Speaker 2 (13:39):
Oh yeah, there's a lot of aspects one miss.

Speaker 3 (13:42):
What What are you going to miss the most? The games,
the people you become close to, the work itself. What
are you going to miss the most?

Speaker 2 (13:50):
Do you think the first two? The games? I still
really enjoy the games.

Speaker 5 (13:54):
I always told my wife Bev, if when I get
tired of travel, you know, I'll look for some else.

Speaker 2 (14:00):
And I still enjoy the travel.

Speaker 5 (14:03):
I still enjoy the travel, you know, going to different places,
the people that we've gotten to know, you know, within
the Big twelve, we have our own little athletic training
you know group and everything. Uh so yeah, I like that.
The uh you know, it's got a whole new group
of players in. But I've been very impressed with the
quality of the players and their personalities and everything. I

(14:27):
don't know why you had to assault, So you know,
that bonding I'll miss.

Speaker 2 (14:33):
But also you think look back.

Speaker 5 (14:35):
You know, there's been four coaches in four years, and
there's been a whole totally new teams. The last two
years we had free as a holdover and ab as
a holdover, but they both read shirts.

Speaker 2 (14:45):
So we have zero points coming back.

Speaker 5 (14:47):
You know, So you don't have the bond that you
have that you used to develop on it, you know,
like with the Deshaun Butler's or the Truck Bryant or
John Flowers the.

Speaker 1 (14:57):
Hair Bears and watching those guys grow up with that
team that was.

Speaker 5 (15:00):
Yeah, you miss those kind of relationships. I just don't
see those happening in the future unfortunately. Yeah, so those
are factors that were involved in my decision.

Speaker 1 (15:10):
Think about this. You started Atlantic ten, Yeah, you've gone
Atlantic ten, Big East, Big twelve. I think just think
about the bizarre if you were to say that in
a nineteen eighty four Randy, before you're done here, you're
going to stay at the same school and be in
the Big East, the Big twelve, you go like, yeah.

Speaker 4 (15:31):
And almost in the Pac twelve too, if you want
to toe right, I mean, you've gone from Saint bona
Venture to Utah. Seriously, right, that's a that's a heck
of a swath of geography there.

Speaker 3 (15:40):
That you're covered.

Speaker 2 (15:41):
Yeah, definitely.

Speaker 1 (15:43):
Can I ask you a couple always going to those
legal pad This is always trouble.

Speaker 4 (15:48):
Are you asking what do you mean technical things like
how to treat an ankle?

Speaker 1 (15:51):
We go to and talk about a multipitous strange pronation sublxation.
What are you doing?

Speaker 3 (15:56):
How do you help Randy? Don't pay attention to these guys.
How do you help a player understand the difference between
pain and soreness? That is a good question question, thank you?

Speaker 5 (16:11):
Well, you know the pain I want to take care
of and evaluate and even when I'm doing a long
term rehab, if they wake up sore the next morning,
then I think we worked.

Speaker 2 (16:21):
Them about the right amount.

Speaker 5 (16:24):
If there continue to be sore halfway through the day,
I say, afternoon, then maybe we did too much. Okay,
but the pain pain, I expect to see symptoms of
inflammation like swelling, redness, loss of function, soreness. I mean,
we're all not that young right now. We probably all
wake up with a little bit soreness in the morning,

(16:45):
but as we start moving around it disappears.

Speaker 3 (16:48):
How do you help though the player up here understand
the difference between pain and soreness? Because what's the player
going to say? Players can say it hurts, yeah, right,
So well.

Speaker 4 (16:58):
Or the opposite or I'm fine, yeah, and not tell
you how.

Speaker 5 (17:02):
And that's my job to figure that out. And then
I just like I told you, I'll explain to them.
My job is to help educate them and then you know,
apply that if the soreness is not affecting them, it's just, uh,
they just feel a little bit, but they can still
run the court full speed, change direction, do what they
need to do. I don't say we disregard it, but

(17:24):
I still want to work with them to try and
help eliminate that. Uh someone with pain again, I might
suspect they have swelling or something else going on.

Speaker 2 (17:33):
Then we need to treat that and they're probably going
to be a step slow or something's going on. There.

Speaker 3 (17:37):
One other question about that and then so what role
have you played with coaches of any over the years,
And maybe it's different with different coaches as to can
this guy go and how.

Speaker 5 (17:49):
He And that goes back to this total roster changeover.
And I'm not the only one. I mean us as
athletic trainers communicate and you know this is happening across
the country. But you know, someone to ask you, uh,
so and so got hurt, what do you think, well,

(18:09):
it's the first time. It's like dealing with fifteen freshmen
now or whatever. Because it's the first time I've seen
this person injured, I have nothing to go from. You know,
is he a sweller or not a swell or is
he a tough guy or is he not a tough guy?
You know, is it pain or is it soreness? So
you know I have to Unfortunately, I may not look
as smart because I don't know this individual as well,

(18:30):
and I know a lot I'll be a lot smarter
tomorrow when I see him in the morning and see
there is swelling, there isn't swelling. You know, there's full motion,
there isn't full motion. So you know, you don't always
know immediately the severity of that injury.

Speaker 2 (18:44):
Now very severe injuries, sure, yes.

Speaker 5 (18:46):
You do, but that middle of the road, that second degree,
you don't know as well, and it takes a little
bit more time since you don't know these as.

Speaker 3 (18:54):
One other question I want to go to these guys,
is that so? And again you don't have to name
coaches or particular stances, but have you had instances where
coaches have said, Randy, dang it, Well, they might say
sithingles get this guy ready to go.

Speaker 4 (19:09):
Sure, Oh yeah, I've had that happens all the time,
all the time. I would think, right if from a
coach perspective, you need your guys back on the floor,
So I would think.

Speaker 5 (19:15):
That happens a lot different caliber with different coaches. But yeah,
you know, as long as they know. You know, in
the old days, we didn't even have MRIs. But and
when the doctors said they're cleared, coaches wanted them cleared
and playing. You know, if MRI came back and it's good,
they want them back playing. Okay, So yeah, definitely.

Speaker 1 (19:34):
Right, you take over in eighty four. Immediately you go
on a foreign tour. Yes, I'm just trying to do
the math in my head. I bet you've gone on
over ten foreign tours. Have you counted?

Speaker 2 (19:48):
You know, I've never counted them up.

Speaker 1 (19:50):
And you went on Atlantic ten trips? Have done? Yeah?
With the Yeah, you were all starts, we used to
have that.

Speaker 2 (19:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (19:58):
So you've been as a SAI, right, he's been around.

Speaker 2 (20:02):
Yeah, he's been a little kid from Oxford, Ohio. I
never would have fought.

Speaker 1 (20:06):
You've been to Italy? I mean, do you count them up?
Where you've been Italy?

Speaker 2 (20:10):
Spain, uh, Northern Europe.

Speaker 5 (20:12):
That first trip I think was five countries, ten games
in fourteen days, all on bus, you.

Speaker 4 (20:18):
Know ten, say a ten games in fourteen days. I'm
pretty sure school. That's the old school where now you're
like three and if they are actually games or not
when you go over it tames.

Speaker 2 (20:32):
Yeah, but that was there was competition back then.

Speaker 5 (20:35):
Yeah, sure, and somewhat maybe fights, but uh yeah. Then
I've been to you know, Japan, uh Seul, South Korea,
and Hong Kong.

Speaker 2 (20:47):
Australia twice. One included New Zealand, so.

Speaker 1 (20:51):
Cat used to like Australia.

Speaker 5 (20:53):
Yeah, but it was pretty cool to The second time
was uh to thousands, so they were getting ready for
the Olympics, so we were we were able to tour
the Olympic site, so that that was great.

Speaker 1 (21:07):
And then they and then the November tournaments right Puerto
Rico's and the whole Bahama, Bahamas and San Juan and Charleston,
Vegas just all over the place.

Speaker 2 (21:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
Germany when you played Texas A and MG.

Speaker 2 (21:21):
Yeah really that was it was an oversea bos one game. Germany.
That was a great trip until the.

Speaker 1 (21:26):
Game, Yeah, yeah, that wasn't a good day to be
a mountaineer wherever, wherever you may be.

Speaker 3 (21:31):
Any of these names from the eighty four eighty five
teams stand out to you.

Speaker 2 (21:35):
Dale still in touch with them, are you? Oh yeah,
oh yeah.

Speaker 3 (21:38):
Bernardo Brown, JJ Crawl Holman Harley was on that team.

Speaker 1 (21:44):
Dunk Bounce Dunk in the NCAA.

Speaker 3 (21:46):
Vernon Odem, Darryl Pinkney, Lester Rowe from Buffalo.

Speaker 2 (21:50):
That guy kind of helped me a little bit.

Speaker 3 (21:51):
Yeah. Eric Simmitch, Eric Wayne Yearwood was on the team.

Speaker 1 (21:55):
Is it fair to say the dal Blaney and Eric Semmish,
two names that you just mentioned, are probably in your
top ten list of most enjoyable knuckleheads that you worked with.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
Yeah. I was gonna say, goofballs, but yeah, yeah, I.

Speaker 1 (22:14):
Just remember that they had a great rapport with you
and it was a NonStop comedy show. Those guys were knuckleheads.

Speaker 2 (22:21):
Yeah, and that was before Seinfeld and everything.

Speaker 1 (22:23):
Else, exactly. I mean they just to guy to go
into it now. John McKinny, our legendary radio engineer for
the Mountaineer Sports Network, and Jim Galuski, who was the
film guy. So it was like this pack. It was.
It was John McKenny and Jimbo and like Randy would
kind of be like third party and Blainey and Semish

(22:43):
and there would be on the road. They would constantly
engage in practical jokes against each other, to the point
where they got keys to get into each other's room. Really,
McKinney would go in back then phone old school phones,
unscrewed the phone. McKinny would go in, unscrew the phone

(23:05):
so the mouthpiece wouldn't work, and then start calling over
and they hello, hello there. They did everything. They did.
Shaving cream on the phone, you put it and you
got it on your ear.

Speaker 3 (23:18):
They did.

Speaker 1 (23:18):
They just planted everything coool aid and shower water, the mattress,
this did that and that was those.

Speaker 3 (23:26):
Shower that's a good one.

Speaker 1 (23:28):
Did everything.

Speaker 2 (23:29):
How do you do that?

Speaker 3 (23:30):
Just unscrew the thing and put.

Speaker 2 (23:32):
Yeah yeah, McKinny.

Speaker 1 (23:34):
That was like McKinny was like mckayval. It was. It
was just it was fun, legendary Woody O'Hara, I mean,
it was like a traveling road show and Jack Jack
was a character. Wood He was a character. Mickey went
on a future Mickey for Fairy would travel with the
team and it was it was just like it was Seinfeld.

(23:56):
It was it was fun, it was one. It was
it was like a band of brothers, like we're going
in there because you know, Gail. Gail was perfect at
like creating the tension of like it's us against all
these Atlantic ten schools, right like Rhode Island doesn't hate
like us. We don't like them. The Temple thing, the
whole Temple thing. Temple like they when we went to Temple,

(24:17):
they gave us nine towels. When those bastards come back,
all they're getting is nine towels. That's it, you understand.
I mean it was that, it was constant.

Speaker 5 (24:27):
But we had I mean when Bill Cosby was well respected.
I mean we had so many battles at Temple and
Bill Cosby came over our locker room, win and lose
sometimes and just give his credit, yeah, for how good
the games were and how strategic those games were. Yeah,
because you know, no shot clock, he was holding the ball.
Some of those scores. Yeah, forty four, forty two, and

(24:48):
every possession was just tension two three zone was it?

Speaker 3 (24:53):
One three one? I mean the Temple ran.

Speaker 1 (24:55):
Yeah, it was a matchup kind of crazy thing that
he did. He was good.

Speaker 3 (24:59):
It was a good cat.

Speaker 2 (25:00):
Those were some fun games.

Speaker 1 (25:02):
Remember when Tom Penders got it going at Rhode Island.
There was this great hostility and animosity between the two schools,
to the point where Penders had to have a security
guard when he came here when the Atlantic ten Tournament
was held here, he had a dude, brought a dude
from Rhode Island with him. Oh yeah, because it was gouty,
because like it was hot.

Speaker 2 (25:19):
Yeah, Randy.

Speaker 3 (25:20):
During the games, are you into the games and what's
going on in the strategy or you just kind of preoccupied.

Speaker 2 (25:28):
With Oh no, yeah, I'm I'm a big basketball fan.

Speaker 3 (25:31):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (25:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (25:34):
We played a lot of basketball at lunchtime. Yeah, we
had a lot of basketball.

Speaker 2 (25:40):
Lots.

Speaker 1 (25:41):
Yeah, lots of lunchtime basketball. Garrett Ford, Rocky Gianola, and
a guy named Brad Howe.

Speaker 4 (25:47):
No, I never played. I would never go down and play.

Speaker 3 (25:50):
Huh reason.

Speaker 4 (25:52):
Once I was done playing, I was done playing. Rarely
pictures up again.

Speaker 1 (25:55):
You'd watch.

Speaker 4 (25:56):
I'd go out and see him out there.

Speaker 1 (25:57):
Heavy contact in those games.

Speaker 4 (26:00):
Coach Garrett fordelbows were flying a lot. I didn't have
time to get hurt. I didn't need to get down
for he was flying flying.

Speaker 5 (26:08):
I mean, yeah, so he knocked one guy flat. I
don't say his name or anything.

Speaker 2 (26:14):
He looked at you as you can't do that, because
I just did.

Speaker 1 (26:17):
Garrett played the Maathaye old school. It's just think, have
you count the victories of the coaches that you have
worked for? Gail hugs John right amazing. So let me
ask you some coach questions. Please be careful, nothing dangerous

(26:39):
at all. So they've all they've all had the ultra
levels of success all the time. When his coach is
Gail cal What made Gail as good as he was
and as successful as he was? What did he have.

Speaker 2 (26:53):
All?

Speaker 3 (26:53):
Right?

Speaker 2 (26:55):
Even back in that time, I think he had a
good strategy.

Speaker 5 (26:57):
I mean you had that trapping press and uh a
matchup two three zone that you know, it wasn't a
stand still two three zone.

Speaker 2 (27:06):
I think that confused uh, posing teams, and he would
change frequently on timeouts, and he would change his defense
a lot on uh yeah, and I don't think that
was always done back in that air or time.

Speaker 1 (27:22):
Great stuff out of timeouts to offense.

Speaker 5 (27:25):
At Yeah, he's.

Speaker 1 (27:29):
Drawed up and he gets you some good the weakness.

Speaker 2 (27:31):
Yeah, he knew that. He could play the off the
weakness of the other team, So all right, hugs.

Speaker 5 (27:41):
Uh, you know he was demanding and wanted to outwork everybody.
I mean, those three hour practices put work ethic in everyone,
and I think we'd wear down I mean, how many
times did it come down to that last four minute
time out? And you know we could if we were
four points down going into that last four minute time
out still felt like you you're going to win, you know,

(28:03):
because they we would just wear people down, you.

Speaker 1 (28:07):
Know, overall.

Speaker 5 (28:07):
And then you know when the press was happening too,
you know, our press was pretty darn good and forty
minutes seemed like nothing after three hour.

Speaker 1 (28:16):
Yes, exactly, exactly, pretty fast, b lined.

Speaker 2 (28:25):
I you know, I think the.

Speaker 5 (28:27):
Whole do different offensive strategy. You know, at that time,
I don't think that you know, he had one thing
going on one side of the court, one thing going
on the other side of the court. Hadn't really seen
that one three one. I mean we joked about that
with Temple, but it seemed like Temple was the only
school running out way back then in two thousands. I
don't think we saw a lot of one three one.

(28:48):
And then just the movement and the ball and the chemistry.
Uh you know there's a lot of smoking mirrors maybe
for twenty five seconds then boom.

Speaker 2 (28:57):
You know, he would get that going.

Speaker 5 (28:59):
Whether it was door, yeah, because the back doors arrow,
there's it's not gonna standing in the corner, you know.

Speaker 1 (29:05):
So yeah, Darren, it was quick. It's swift.

Speaker 5 (29:11):
But I mean how we go in nineteen games, you know,
with the players and the injuries that we had and everything.
You know, again, another very good strategy person and good
at timeouts and those he got those guys to believe
in themselves and even with the seven eight players, wouldn't
be able to win nineteen games.

Speaker 2 (29:30):
That was I think have incredible players.

Speaker 1 (29:33):
Yeah, you know, sometimes we sit here and we I
don't want to say. I don't know if the words
marginalize or we don't put the significance into what it is.
You think, oh, basketball, it's a sprained ankle. It's ay,
they bump forehead, You got stitches, and this is delicate.
I mean you're putting in some life threatening situations. You

(29:55):
you you've through the years, you have been close to
situations that literally could fatal if you weren't there.

Speaker 2 (30:02):
Unfortunately, Yes, I mean had two incidents.

Speaker 5 (30:07):
In the last previous two years, and uh yeah those
you know, you don't enjoy those at all, but you're
prior training and what you've learned, you do put that
to use, you know, like a hobby said, you know,
I'm a basketball fan, but yeah, I still I have
to you know, I'm there for a medical reason, and
I'm there for a reason. I need to do my job,

(30:29):
and I try and teach younger athletic training students and
people that you know, we don't need to be there
to be aggressive. We need to be assertive though when
it's our time to do something. I mean, we don't
want coaches or other players handling injuries.

Speaker 2 (30:44):
That's what we're here for.

Speaker 5 (30:46):
So you know, when that does happen, you know, if
I can do nothing the whole practice or a game
except my little job, then that's fine. But when someone
does get hurt, you have to be assertive and.

Speaker 2 (30:56):
Take care of that.

Speaker 1 (30:57):
And the thing about that is it literally happened in
a split second. Something can happen in a split second.
And obviously the one that we can talk about is
a cook. A cook because it happened in a game,
and in the exhibition game and everyone saw that happening,
and literally, you know, it is a moment of just
the unknown, ye and you have to aggressively get in there,

(31:21):
and it's it's it's you guys do not get the
recognition that you deserve. You know, when we had John
Spiker in here a long time ago, now a couple
of years, and you know that there's that and you'll
know what this is. There's a football injury that happens
when a collar bone can cut off the windpipe. And

(31:41):
when you run out onto that field and that person's
down this number one, you're starting off, you have zero
idea exactly what you're going to get to when you
get there, and then you look down and you immediately
have to make an examination and get your hand down
in there to get that bone away from there so
the air isn't cut off. I mean, it's just we
take this stuff for granted. But you're saving lives.

Speaker 5 (32:05):
Yes, you know, it'd be nice if my whole career
I didn't have to worry about that. But yes, you're
totally correct. And that's why we have our education and
planning and practice and prevention in those areas for those
moments that do happen. And yeah, I mean it's unfortunate
and you're you're there for the student athlete. It would

(32:25):
be nice if no disrespective you know, coaches would appreciate
that because you know, let's be honest, it's sports, it's athletics,
but it shouldn't be life or death.

Speaker 2 (32:34):
But there's times that can be that.

Speaker 5 (32:36):
And you know, then we go back to you know,
the coaches wants them back out there. We still we
need to be looking out for the health and well
being of the student.

Speaker 3 (32:47):
How much how much has the has the technology changed
since you started, as you've gone from and breaking open
the ammonia cap to concussion proto call for.

Speaker 2 (33:00):
Example, you know, like a concussion.

Speaker 5 (33:02):
I mean, you know that's you know, we were in
the dark ages and then you know, around two thousand
it started getting more and more important and obviously the
diagnosis a CTE and then we probably jumped over too
much to being too conservative. And then some great research
came out of Buffalo and everything, and you know, now

(33:24):
controlled exercise helps with the rehab and so I think
we're in a pretty good place now with concussions. But
you know, unfortunately, even minor concussions takes the honesty of
the student athlete or the professional athlete to admit that
there's something's wrong, because every concussion isn't obvious. You know,

(33:45):
you don't have to lose conscious, you don't you know,
you know, a football player with a helmet, you may
not always recognize that they're having a mild concussion immediately,
so you need their honesty to let you know. But uh, yeah,
it'd be nice to be able to avoid all of
ct and hopefully in the future there'll be much less
of that.

Speaker 4 (34:05):
But how about the difference, speaking along the change in technology,
how about the difference just in players today understanding body
and rehabit recovery more than they would have in the
mid eighties when you just didn't have some of that
information available versus what the what you have now to
be able to track sleep and all of the.

Speaker 5 (34:21):
Yeah, I means so there's a lot of good things.
And yeah, you know, sleep rings we have. We have
two devices on every basketball player for every practice. That
gives us more information than we need to know, but
but it gives us good information, especially like if I'm
trying to get someone back from a ank or knee injury,
I can really look at the statistics about how much

(34:44):
they're doing and how much I want to progress them
and everything. So that's that's a good information when you
first say that. Sometimes though the uh you know, when
the NBA started load management, some of that was good.
And then you know, when you have high school kids
talking about load management, it's like, you know, you haven't
proven yourself yet. How about giving maximum efforts?

Speaker 4 (35:07):
So how how far does the typical player run during
a game or a practice? The five mile mark?

Speaker 5 (35:14):
Uh, three hour practices we were getting up to six
pretty easily. Yeah, but you know that was only one
coach that did the three hours.

Speaker 4 (35:21):
But three and a half to five miles per day
is a reasonable number.

Speaker 5 (35:25):
Reasonable, you know, even some of the coaches. Some of
the coaches even condensed it down more as the season
went on to try and save leg sure. And also
you look at last year we were only using seven
or eight players. Yes, so uh three, you know, two
point seventy five to three. Three point five.

Speaker 4 (35:48):
Was because it was a conscious effort to dial it
back in that you wouldn't have understood that.

Speaker 2 (35:55):
You know, not at all.

Speaker 5 (35:56):
And then plus in eighty seven we didn't have the
twenty hour week rule anything like that, So you know,
when you're winning, things are good and maybe you don't
practice long, but I can remember some long practices after
some losses.

Speaker 2 (36:07):
You know.

Speaker 4 (36:07):
See that's what's amazing. You talk about things we just
gloss over and go with. I mean, just take the
three miles. You're running three miles every day, and I
know they're young and in great shape, which is an
easier bounce back than any of us have. That's a
lot by the time you get into February and co
that is a ton of tax on your body. And
it's hard three miles.

Speaker 2 (36:23):
It's not a.

Speaker 4 (36:24):
Leisure lea three miles wind sprints for three miles.

Speaker 2 (36:29):
Yeah, and for the most part, probably six days a week. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (36:34):
So over the course of your career, I mean you've
seen it all. So in your role, did you always
stay in your lane with just the medical part or
did you have moments or relationship with coaches where you
felt compelled or necessary to give a coach additional information

(36:54):
about a player and what a player might be going
through mentally or other aspects of that player than just
the physical.

Speaker 2 (37:02):
Yes, definitely.

Speaker 5 (37:06):
I'd like to say I filtered and pick and choose
along those lines, because you don't I don't want to
set the player up for failure because he's probably already
in a stressful situation. So you want to protect that player,
but you also want the coach to.

Speaker 2 (37:25):
Know certain things.

Speaker 5 (37:26):
But if you give them almost too much information, then
it might be I hate to say, punishment, or they
might look down upon them or something. And you know,
you don't again, you don't want to make things worse
for the player, But there's sometimes maybe you need to
let the coach know that this person's suffering something else
that's going on in their life that is affecting them.

Speaker 2 (37:47):
And I mean, we.

Speaker 5 (37:49):
Know mental health has been a much bigger issue now
than it was in the eighties. So yeah, there's definitely
been times where I've fight it in coaches to let
them know more than just the physical aspect.

Speaker 1 (38:04):
Three guys before the game is brought to us by
Jan Dill's attorneys at law. They will not take no
for an answer. In fact, what they do do is
specialize in the field of Social Security disability claims and
military disability benefit claims. Sometimes something happens, we're talking about
injuries here, and sometimes something happens and folks are knocked

(38:25):
out of their opportunity to work sometimes forever. So social
security disability benefits are there for you, but they're not
easy to get. So the folks at Jan Dill's Attorneys
at Law are there to help you, to guide you
through the process, which is a difficult challenge. So if
you or someone that you know is preparing for either

(38:45):
a social security or military disability claim, visit the folks
at Jan Dill's Attorneys at Law, based right here in Parkersburg.
Three Guys before the Game is also brought to us
by Comac's Business Systems. Randy's a big water guy, right
about geration, All right, yeah, well right now, they have
got some unbelievable units that can get the big plastic

(39:07):
jugs and the bottles out of your breakroom or out
of your place. You don't need them for our business
owners out there. They've got these water machines. Hoppy particularly
loves the I twelve water cooler.

Speaker 3 (39:20):
One of these.

Speaker 1 (39:22):
He fills his tutor's travel mug up with it. Sleek design,
cutting edge technology, separate water delivery, production of forty four
pounds Jerry West number forty four pounds of ice and
additional storage. Perfect for any business workplaces visit the folks
at coomacs WV dot com.

Speaker 3 (39:42):
You know about Randy, which I didn't know. We were
talking beforehand when he was giving me physical therapy. Big biker,
Oh huge.

Speaker 1 (39:53):
Got big. He's got the world's largest bike holder on
the back of his car. No, it is a.

Speaker 2 (40:00):
Large, No, it is large. It's just a two bike
though I've seen the four.

Speaker 1 (40:04):
That's a big that's a big hold.

Speaker 2 (40:05):
Two of us.

Speaker 1 (40:07):
COVID did it about damn near killing.

Speaker 5 (40:10):
So you look at forty one years and I'll just
tell people, Uh, I feel like I only have had
three bad years and it was in the last five years.

Speaker 2 (40:22):
COVID was the start of it. So yeah, COVID was awful.

Speaker 5 (40:30):
We furloughed many many of our staff was furloughed, which
was not uncommon in the university settings across the country.
And uh so we were really down a lot of people.
And on my side of campus there's only me and
another person for all the sports over there. So I

(40:51):
at the beginning, I was in a hazmat suit swabbing
people and that was not the nose swab it was,
And so I was the only one swab on everybody
on that side of campus.

Speaker 1 (41:02):
Yeah, and then it has had a has met suit.

Speaker 5 (41:05):
I had a hazmat suit, because that's how you started,
you know, you know this you look back at some
of the stuff from the beginning, Yeah, you almost laugh.

Speaker 2 (41:12):
But we didn't know. You didn't know.

Speaker 5 (41:15):
And I'm out there in a ninety degree weather and
in a hazmat suit swabing everybody. And then the amount
of spreadsheets and what you do to keep track of
the testing three times a week for everybody, or what
you do to keep track of all your positives, and
then the retest. I mean I had spreadsheets out the
wazoo and I was testing out the It was awful.

Speaker 2 (41:35):
It was awful.

Speaker 1 (41:36):
Yeah, and then games played in front of no one
and masks on, Coaches didn't want to put their mask on,
had half a mask on, half a mask off. Just
it was when you look back on it was like
this is this is this this massively bad dream that
we all lived through, really really was.

Speaker 5 (41:52):
And then you know I was doing everything I could
just to keep the team on the court.

Speaker 1 (41:58):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (41:59):
Once we you know, we got back into somewhat more
north and we're actually playing and everything, but the uh,
some people wanted to do the political argument and everything
like that, and I'm like, I am just doing what
I can do to try and keep people on the team.

Speaker 2 (42:16):
I don't want to get into the politics of all
this is.

Speaker 5 (42:18):
I'm not pro COVID just because I'm doing this. I'm
doing it because I understand the rules and regulations and
this is.

Speaker 2 (42:25):
What we have to do. Sorry about the politics.

Speaker 1 (42:29):
Yeah, because you don't want to be the guy that
lets someone go and then they spread the whole thing
out there and all of a sudden, you now you
don't have games or I.

Speaker 5 (42:35):
Didn't follow a protocol directly, and just because we didn't
follow the protocol, we're being punished.

Speaker 2 (42:41):
And you had.

Speaker 5 (42:44):
County Health, you had the national you know CDC, I
mean you, and then you had the Big twelve rules,
you had NCA rules.

Speaker 2 (42:53):
There was so many rules.

Speaker 5 (42:54):
And they were constantly changing, and so I mean I
was as of today or as of right now, all right,
this is the rule, and you know it could change
tomorrow or the county anyone could change and it could
affect us. And I had to try and stay up
to date with all those and the team physicians were
absolutely great, too, But we weren't fighting again.

Speaker 2 (43:17):
I was just trying to Yeah one.

Speaker 3 (43:20):
Well, and health professionals, whether it's at your level or
at the highest levels. In my opinion, I think did
an historic job of dealing with a black swan event,
an unprecedented event. And because of that, I know this
will be controversial to some. Because of that, lives were saved,
lives were saved and people stayed healthy because people did

(43:45):
like you and others did the right things.

Speaker 2 (43:48):
Yeah agree, I agree, yes.

Speaker 1 (43:52):
Well, what will meander away from that? Right now?

Speaker 2 (43:55):
If I never hear COVID again, I will be happy.

Speaker 1 (43:57):
One of the one of the things people may not
be aware of is, besides the position that you held
on a day to day basis with basketball, you are
also a instructor, professor, teacher. How many courses? How many
sections would you teach a semester?

Speaker 5 (44:14):
Well, early on they tried to have me. I taught
one in the spring, but that wasn't very successful.

Speaker 1 (44:21):
Travel that didn't last very well.

Speaker 3 (44:23):
Sol sure will not be here today.

Speaker 5 (44:25):
Yeah, So I ended up teaching two in the fall
for many, many years, and then guest lecture at different
things at different times at that but our athletic training
program was in undergrad for several years, and I think
it was twenty two or twenty three went to the
graduate level totally. So I have not taught except guest

(44:46):
lecture the last few years. But yeah, I taught for
many years those two classes and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Speaker 1 (44:54):
I think people would be astounded to know the number
of athletic trainers at this university. You guys have produced
and where they.

Speaker 4 (45:01):
Are I think and give some give some examples just
of the of the pro.

Speaker 2 (45:07):
Teams, well some of the teams.

Speaker 5 (45:09):
So one of my ex students just became the head
athletic train with the Boston Celtics.

Speaker 3 (45:14):
That heard heard of them.

Speaker 5 (45:16):
Yeah, one of our lums is also now it's going
to be back with Dallas. So we had a pretty
famous guy down at LSU two and.

Speaker 2 (45:24):
Jack and Roucci, Yeah, Jack Rucin.

Speaker 5 (45:26):
And we've had, uh there was one time we had
the most in the NFL, but we haven't looked at
that statistically yet. But we have several within the NFL
we've had, I mean, we have physicians pts pas.

Speaker 1 (45:42):
That's one of the great untold stories from a university
standpoint of how prominent and successful the athletic training curriculum is. Yes,
it's considered one of the best.

Speaker 2 (45:51):
In the nation.

Speaker 5 (45:52):
Yes, and uh, we're celebrating our fiftieth this summer, that
second weekend of July, so looking forward to that. We
celebrate the fortieth in twenty fifteen. Then something interrupted it
in twenty twenty was I don't want to mention again. Yeah,
so yeah, so hopefully we'll have several comeback. For several years,

(46:17):
I've been the keeper of the w Athletic Training Alumni
List SERVE and we have over seven hundred alumni that
are on that, so you know, we do have a
large amount of alumni from here and many many of
them have gone on.

Speaker 2 (46:30):
To very successful careers.

Speaker 4 (46:33):
It is the most freakish athlete that you've been around
in the forty years. Good quick, can you and there's
been a lot. Can you identify one above all others?

Speaker 1 (46:42):
That's a good road trip. We always ask these kind
of questions when around road trips.

Speaker 5 (46:45):
Yeah, I mean one that stands out I think is
dealing with basketball.

Speaker 2 (46:51):
You know, I've had exposure to a lot of other sports.

Speaker 5 (46:54):
Too, either through supervision or again, we didn't you know,
way back, we didn't have as many athlete trainers. You'd
cover more events, but we've we've been blessed with a lot,
but with basketball.

Speaker 2 (47:05):
I think Joe Alexander.

Speaker 1 (47:07):
Thought that the first name.

Speaker 2 (47:09):
Yeah, yeah, he was a freakish athlete. Yeah what did what?

Speaker 3 (47:13):
So can you explain him physiologically?

Speaker 1 (47:18):
Good question?

Speaker 2 (47:18):
Hop?

Speaker 5 (47:19):
Uh, quick muscle, I mean his muscle fibers. He was
quick twitch, and I mean he could jump through the
roof and you know he could run. He's fairly strong.
You know you didn't look like that, but I mean,
obviously we've had stronger athletes, but the ability to do what.

Speaker 4 (47:36):
Everything he did in a six eight body. Yeah, it
wasn't like he was a five to ten dude running
around with there. Six eight Yeah.

Speaker 2 (47:42):
Yeah, so that's pretty good.

Speaker 1 (47:44):
Elite elite, elite second jumper, elite second jump, oscar se
second jump, second jump.

Speaker 4 (47:52):
He was a quick second jumper.

Speaker 5 (47:54):
Well he's a pogo stick now he could jump to
now quick quick?

Speaker 2 (48:01):
Yeah that that shot blocking.

Speaker 3 (48:03):
Lester could jump.

Speaker 2 (48:05):
Lester could jump. You know they kind of listed him
at six'.

Speaker 5 (48:09):
Four, yeah you could jump very well, too so old old,
SCHOOL i mean Old Phil. Wilson he was a pretty
good shot blocker.

Speaker 1 (48:17):
Also, well, yeah one time was the all time leading shot.

Speaker 2 (48:20):
Blocker yeah he was.

Speaker 1 (48:21):
Long his arms were.

Speaker 2 (48:22):
Long, yeah but he was you know a lot of.

Speaker 1 (48:23):
Way. Yeah, Yeah, okay here we. Go there's Another you
have to answer.

Speaker 2 (48:28):
This.

Speaker 1 (48:28):
Huh you can't run away from, this.

Speaker 4 (48:30):
Don't you can't tell him what to. Answer he'll decide
how he's going to. Answer you just asked the. Question he'll.

Speaker 1 (48:36):
ANSWER i was just had you in my.

Speaker 3 (48:38):

IT'S i?

Speaker 4 (48:40):

to this.

Speaker 2 (48:44):

question mister matter forty one, years give me your top
five players if you were the general. Manager you're you're
the general. Manager you get to make.

Speaker 4 (48:57):

yeah like a couple of guards. Straightforwards you got to
do it that.

Speaker 1 (49:04):
Way thank, You. Brad who's your you're building a, team
who's your point?

Speaker 2 (49:08):
Guard oh my, gosh.

Speaker 1 (49:11):
This is it's a. QUESTION i, MEAN.

Speaker 5 (49:13):
I know it's a, question BUT i you don't have to, Say.

Speaker 1 (49:16):
Missoula he's not giving you tickets, anyway so he doesn't
have to be the point.

Speaker 2 (49:20):
Guard, no, yeah he could, lead but, yeah.

Speaker 1 (49:26):
Who's your point?

Speaker 2 (49:26):
Guard point? GUARD i don't. Know you got old. School
you go walk on the, wall you, know between the room.

Speaker 5 (49:34):
In the coach's locker. Room you got the wh does
you know the ten years at a time like top
five six players point, Guard Juan, Stayton Juwan. SMALL i
Mean John small doesn't give enough credit with the situation last,

(49:55):
year with how few of players we. Had d Nice,
YEAH i mean how many mistakes did he? Make you
you're so quiet.

Speaker 4 (50:02):
About three and four?

Speaker 1 (50:03):
Years, yeah then you're all done talking About Darris nichols
d Nights Darris nichols.

Speaker 2 (50:08):
Another great point. Guard, yeah so that's a good.

Speaker 1 (50:11):
One where's Day shon on your all time?

Speaker 5 (50:13):
Team he's up, there there's no. Doubt but you, know
personality ones you. Over BUT i think he had some
pretty good statistics too to back it.

Speaker 4 (50:21):
Up the third pretty good clutch guy, too game something.

Speaker 3 (50:26):
Good yeah that last year Day sean was just like
when it was on the, line like just give him the,
ball right braes getting the ball out.

Speaker 1 (50:33):
Of way six or seven games he wanted the.

Speaker 5 (50:35):
Gun yeah and, again but you look back at those
a lot of them were one you, know LIKE i,
said after the last we just hung their hung their stayed.

Speaker 2 (50:43):
There and then all of a sudden we went it
over in the last few.

Speaker 3 (50:46):
Minutes what what what was going through your? Mind speaking
of Day shawn when at The final, four when When
dayshon went, Down.

Speaker 5 (50:53):
Well you, know obviously that was absolutely. Awful Day sean
has a lot of personality and, everything and and you,
know obviously he was. CRUSHED i mean we all see
the pictures of the videos and that and. Everything you,
know as a, humor he has an excellent sense of humor,
too and he came out he, goes you, know next,
TIME i Think i'll just.

Speaker 2 (51:12):
Pull up jump.

Speaker 5 (51:14):
Round that probably would have been a good. Choice but,
yeah so, unfortunate you, KNOW.

Speaker 2 (51:21):
Acls.

Speaker 5 (51:22):
Happened but you, know in in the final four with
a pack, stadium with.

Speaker 3 (51:26):
That, player that player at that moment.

Speaker 4 (51:29):
With AN nba, career, yeah waiting for you. Next that
was that was a hard. Situation in addition to just the,
injury it was a tough.

Speaker 3 (51:36):
Spot.

Speaker 5 (51:37):
Yeah so but we got to spend a lot of
time together the next ten years or so because he you,
know he would continue to, play continue to come back
in the summer From europe or wherever and work with
him for three or four, months send him back. Out you,
know he'd come, back try and work on the knee.
Again so you, know he ended up having three. Surgeries, wow,

(51:58):
yeah it.

Speaker 3 (51:58):
Was it was a bad. One.

Speaker 1 (51:59):
HUNT i missed on a couple of those. Surgeries we
can say it they. Did wasn't, Here it happened somewhere.

Speaker 5 (52:06):
Else it was a long, road and uh he, persevered you,
know uh provided for his family by playing overseas and
did the most he could with a pretty bad.

Speaker 2 (52:18):
Knee SO i give him a lot of credit and.

Speaker 5 (52:20):
EVERYTHING i think he's doing pretty well, now or Or
joe feels sorry for.

Speaker 1 (52:24):
Him Put joe's injury into, perspective because here's a guy
that had to go shoot with his. Offhand it was so.
Bad talk talk us through, that no hippo.

Speaker 5 (52:36):
Go but you, know, so, Yeah, joe you know when
you come To Tough Guy, awards you, know he.

Speaker 2 (52:44):
Up, Yeah joe's at the, top you.

Speaker 5 (52:46):
Know and uh so that injury happens and it goes
undiagnosed because it's not a common.

Speaker 2 (52:54):
Injury this.

Speaker 5 (52:57):
It was called as cromel and which you, know you,
know rotator cuff, dislocation shoulder, separation those all terms we've
at least heard you know this aso chromeil is actually
where part of his clavical didn't, fuse and actually there
was two parts in his that didn't at. Birth, yeah
it's never, fused so you, know it's like a young

(53:19):
bone in, there and when he got hit in that,
shoulder it kind of displaced and obviously caused his pain
and they eventually had to have surgery on. That but
him being left, handed you, KNOW i, mean he taught
himself how to shoot right, handed go back to That kentucky.
GAME i, mean they just let him go and you,
KNOW i wouldn't even pay attention to him because you're

(53:40):
not going to shoot it in.

Speaker 2 (53:41):
Everything AND i mean it is amazing.

Speaker 5 (53:44):
That you, know he's very hard to, know it's very,
disciplined and you, know you give him a, challenge he'll overcome.
It you, know you, know don't challenge, him he'll he'll
he'll go right in your you, know face and, everything
and you'll figure something out to get around.

Speaker 3 (53:58):
It speaking of guys who tough guys played with, Pain
Nate adrian's one of the guys that comes on this.

Speaker 5 (54:04):
Show you know exactly his way. Up, Yeah Joe mizula
and THEN i was gonna Go. Nate and SOMETIMES i,
Say nate's my last tough, guy you, know so because
he's played with he played with multiple injuries too that
weren't always uh, publicized and he played right through him
and everything.

Speaker 4 (54:19):
Horrific shoulder there and at the end when That gonzaga. Game,
yeah we've talked about many.

Speaker 2 (54:24):
Times, yeah, yeah so, Yeah nate's definitely a tough. Guy,
yeah just like.

Speaker 3 (54:29):
You, No i'm.

Speaker 1 (54:30):
Not they played through his. Shoulder hoppy's got an it.
Man we gotta have seventy two.

as devoted to the rehabilitation process as they should.

Speaker 5 (56:40):
Be, WELL i like to try and start with, myself you,
know really reach out to, them take them aside, private what's.

Speaker 2 (56:48):
Up you, know we.

Speaker 5 (56:50):
Need to do this to get. Better we need to
do this to get you where you're supposed to. Be
sometimes they're just struggling with. It maybe they're not been
injured before and don't totally understand what they need to.

Speaker 2 (56:59):
Do so sometimes that. Works sometimes maybe they're, lazy or
maybe sometimes in forty, years we've had a few, turres.

Speaker 1 (57:09):
You, know maybe that might, be that might be A t.
Shirt we've had a few. Tures we've had a.

Speaker 5 (57:13):
Futures so you, know maybe you reach, out maybe there's
an assistant, coach a strength, coach, teammate maybe someone else.

Speaker 2 (57:20):
Can help find the.

Speaker 5 (57:21):
Switch and then ultimately you can obviously go to the
head coach and they'll usually, find you, know, treadmill motivate
tires or some type of motivation to help them get.

Speaker 3 (57:31):
There so do you find, that do you find that
most generally, speaking most will do what's? Necessary?

Speaker 5 (57:38):
Oh, yeah most, are most are, Motivated, okay, Definitely and
that's one big reason WHY i wanted to stay in
athletics setting. SETTING i, MEAN i didn't want to work
with workman's comp or you, know with all due, respect
respected workers.

Speaker 3 (57:50):
Comp, yeah for people like, me old guys that are physical.

Speaker 1 (57:53):
Therapy AND i WISH i wish we had the phone
roller here because he said it's going to be extremely.
PAINFUL i. Would i'd love to see him take you
down to the floor and roll that thing over, there
just SO i could see you wins and.

Speaker 3 (58:03):
Pain it, does, Well randy will tell you it.

Speaker 4 (58:05):
Hurts what's gonna you just got to go through that
to get.

Speaker 1 (58:09):
Better right, hypothesis agree or, disagree and probably you AND
i are probably one of the few guys that can
make this argument since we did. IT i maintain that
travel and the wear down on the body was harder
in The atlantic ten than The big.

Speaker 5 (58:28):
Twelve hmmm, Interesting, yeah that's Well lank ten a lot
of bus and then you know the commercial flights because
we didn't have the charters back, then so that you, know,
oh you get back To, pittsburgh you still got an
hour and a half hour and forty five minutes because
it's baggage claim back on the, bus load the.

Speaker 1 (58:50):
Bus, yeah here's my. Contention it's A wednesday game we're.
Playing let's say we're playing At rody on A. Wednesday
we were leaving the coliseum at a. Lot we're going
to The Pittsburgh Airport.

Speaker 3 (59:02):
Tuesday On.

Speaker 1 (59:03):
Tuesday On, tuesday we're leaving at. Eleven we're gonna get
to The Pittsburgh. Airport we're gonna jack around. There we're
gonna fly off at like three. O'clock we get To
Rhode island probably like six o'clock by the time we
get on the. Bus we practice there in the gym
at night. Ye get up the next. Morning, yeah teeny.
Keeney go to the walk, through play the, game go

(59:23):
back to the. Hotel leave the hotel at about ten
in the morning On. Thursday now On, thursday now leave the,
hotel get to the, airport fly back To, pittsburgh get
on the, bus come back. Down one road. Game you
Left tuesday at eleven and now you're Back thursday about four,
o'clock four. Thirty that's one road. Game now you know

(59:44):
what the deal. Is, basically we're in the thirty eight
thirty six hours by the time you leave and you
come all the way. Back it's LIKE i just think
first class. SEATS i, say it's, easier even though you're going. Farther,
well it's.

Speaker 2 (01:00:02):
It's still a.

Speaker 5 (01:00:03):
CHALLENGE i, mean there's parts of me THAT i want
to agree with, you but there's parts. TOO i, mean
when you're getting back at sometimes you, know we've gotten
back at four five, six we've seen daylight coming. Back
that's a, challenge and you got to take care of
yourself on the. Road and you, know if people aren't
eating or drinking right or getting the right, rest it
is still a. Challenge but total, time no, Comparison, yeah

(01:00:25):
remember we used to Combine Rhode island and Mash or Like.

Speaker 1 (01:00:28):
Utah we became citizens Of utah this.

Speaker 4 (01:00:30):
Ye, yeah, wow that's a rare three week.

Speaker 1 (01:00:33):
Trip we were In. Utah. Yeah next year it will Be.
Arizona we'll thank, you.

Speaker 3 (01:00:39):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:00:40):
Forever the travel is definitely a, challenge but having the
charters has definitely improved a, situation no doubt about. That
but you still need to be aware of because we're
jumping time zones and that's a little bit harder on the.
Body and, uh the amount of time in the air
causes more dehydration. Too you, Know i'm a non pop,

(01:01:02):
drinker so very anti. Caffeine so you.

Speaker 3 (01:01:07):
Don't do any.

Speaker 1 (01:01:07):
Caffeine you don't do any caffeine at.

Speaker 2 (01:01:09):
All no.

Speaker 4 (01:01:10):
Coffee he frowns on us when we go on our
coffee walks on the. Road he does not think that's
a Good.

Speaker 1 (01:01:14):
Oh you're a coffee. Here i'm.

Speaker 2 (01:01:16):
Life, NO i don't know.

Speaker 1 (01:01:19):
CAFFEINE i think our listeners may be, surprised, no and
they're not going to like.

Speaker 2 (01:01:24):
You for, this.

Speaker 1 (01:01:26):
Geez they may be surprised to know that it's just
part of the deal that when the officials that are
working the, game come into the. Arena oftentimes they they,
limp they have they have ambulation, disorder they can't walk
because they've just gone five days in a. Row you

(01:01:47):
guys provide athletic training OR i should say physical therapy.
Whatever walk us through a little bit like what do
most officials come in.

Speaker 5 (01:01:56):
For, well there's a, variety and there's one official that
kind of got.

Speaker 1 (01:02:03):
Banned OH i need to know this. Story you can
go with.

Speaker 5 (01:02:07):
This you're, done, dude go our our athletic trainer At.
Kansas we kind of like him a lot because he
got one guy banned from coming to the athletic.

Speaker 1 (01:02:16):
Training so what would this guy.

Speaker 5 (01:02:18):
Do, well he'd come in and SAY i need about
a five minute, stretch and about thirty five or forty five.

Speaker 2 (01:02:23):
Minutes, later you're, like you, KNOW i got other people
to take care of. Too it's like it's not all about.

Speaker 5 (01:02:28):
You and one official maybe kind of thought it was
all about.

Speaker 1 (01:02:32):
Him OH i got to get the name after he
won't spill the beans.

Speaker 4 (01:02:35):
And it didn't necessarily help us get calls on those, nights.

Speaker 5 (01:02:38):
No, no but uh, yeah him and The kansas guy
got at, it and, uh.

Speaker 1 (01:02:43):
Basically the kansasize the. Guys, DUDE i got to get
guys ready to get the hell out of.

Speaker 5 (01:02:46):
Here, YEAH i, mean we're here for the student. ATHLETE i.
DON'T i MEAN i can't tell. YOU i mean, Officials
i've taken care of.

Speaker 1 (01:02:52):
You what do they? Normally just they need's a free.

Speaker 2 (01:02:54):
THING i got an. Achilles, okay you know do.

Speaker 5 (01:02:57):
This you know we treat you, know treated moisty, whatever
stretch it out and tape. It, yeah you know that's
not a big. Deal but you, know you got to
manage your time on game day and you can't spend
an enormous amount of time with one person that doesn't
he isn't even on your team and doesn't give you.

Speaker 2 (01:03:15):
Calls So.

Speaker 3 (01:03:18):
I'm totally for every treatment should equal a, call.

Speaker 4 (01:03:23):
And its treatment should get Exactly who are?

Speaker 2 (01:03:26):
SOMEBODY i should have had more final?

Speaker 1 (01:03:27):
Fours who's some of your favorite? Officials? Uh who would you?

Speaker 2 (01:03:33):
LIKE i. DON'T i don't like naming names. Again you
know what's?

Speaker 1 (01:03:38):
Okay you know you're not saying they're they're bad. GUYS i,
mean he doesn't want to leave somebody out he's.

Speaker 4 (01:03:44):
Met but a bunch of wonderful officials over.

Speaker 3 (01:03:46):
The years wonderful, men the right calls all the, Time,
tony just Because, tony you're you're trying to draw him
into your, world because you were, constantly always, complaining complaining about,
officials and you want to name, names and you want
you want, company you want company in, that And randy's
a good guy and he's not willing to do.

Speaker 4 (01:04:04):
That never think you're getting enough.

Speaker 1 (01:04:06):
CALLS i disagree with your assertion THAT i don't like.
OFFICIALS i have great respect for. Him some of them
have better days than others at. Times and for the,
RECORD i was not one of the broadcasters this year
at wuvu's press table that had an official look at
me and Go it wasn't.

Speaker 4 (01:04:28):
Me he was saying, hello he was waving to, me, Acknowledging,
hey good to see.

Speaker 1 (01:04:32):
You it wasn't. Me i'm just saying that so you
can make your.

Speaker 4 (01:04:36):
Assertion told me he was doing a fine, job doing
an excellent job when he'd come over for, you you're
doing an excellent. Job he was just pointing back to,
maybe like when you make a good pass on the
basketball for you AND soe to assist the guy that
scores is supposed to look at the passer and point like,
acknowledging good. Job that's what was. Happening he misinterprets guy
was pointing saying great, job great and he heard my
take on the review and was acknowled that's a great.

(01:04:59):
TAKE i, Think, WELL i think that's that's WHAT i saw.

Speaker 3 (01:05:03):
Happening in, fairness we've gone down a rabbit. Hole let's
Get randy off the hook on.

Speaker 1 (01:05:07):
THAT i JUST i just thought it might be interesting
for our listeners to know that. REFS i, mean because
they work, night they come in man, like they need,
ice they need, heat they need some stem sometimes in
order to get them, tape and some guys really. Do
there's a lot of, tape.

Speaker 5 (01:05:23):
Right oh, YEAH i mean you talked about our. Travel
think about those, officials and that's that's a valid complaint
from some coaches that their travel is way.

Speaker 2 (01:05:34):
Too much and they're down and you don't have a good. Night,
yeah and maybe past their prime and they may just
be totally exhausted.

Speaker 1 (01:05:40):
Too, sure but when you're getting four or five thousand
dollars a, night it's tough to, say, Hey i'm not
going to do this.

Speaker 2 (01:05:45):
ANYMORE i wouldn't, know but.

Speaker 4 (01:05:50):
That you also need officials to keep coming up and develop, people,
Definitely so the issue starts at the lower. Level you
gotta get guys developing, hard, professional get.

Speaker 1 (01:06:00):
Into can you give me a couple of your favorite
all time.

Speaker 2 (01:06:02):
GAMES i was gonna go all About Pat driscoll.

Speaker 1 (01:06:05):
Though pat's the greatest call in the history Of mountaineer.

Speaker 4 (01:06:08):
Basket a tremendous, call the right call at.

Speaker 3 (01:06:10):
The Big East.

Speaker 2 (01:06:11):
TOURNAMENT i was going to, go do you remember he
was a student manager At Saint. Bonnie that's a great.
Story so you, know go back To.

Speaker 5 (01:06:19):
Atlantic ten and you know you used to have a
manager host you when you went in there the day
before for practice and. Everything Pat driscoll was a student
manager At Saint, bonnie worked his way up through the,
ranks and then we get to know him and see
him on the floor and, everything.

Speaker 1 (01:06:34):
And he made the great made the greatest. Call and
for The, mountaineers he's the one that called the fall
