Well, after thirty years, a Laura Garden's nursery is looking
as though it's going to be shutting shop. Now it's
a family run business, and the beautiful Estelle Cornell, who
many of you know, joins me on the line right now.
Good morning to you, Stelle.

Good morning Katie. How are you here?
Speaker 1 (00:17):
I'm very well, as Welle. I got so many messages
on Friday, people messaging me, going, Katie, I'm looking at
Estelle's Facebook page and it is looking as though Laura
Gardens is going to be closing. What's going on?
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Look, Katie, I think it's just time for my next adventure.
I've done thirty years and actually born and raised in business,
and had forty four years in business, through all sorts
of challenges, through lots of joy, lots of winning, getting
into the Hall of Fame and all those wonderful, wonderful things.
(00:54):
And I've decided at my age, when I'm sick, Deeple,
I next miss my next chapter, Katie, and I don't
really want to be seen to be being walled out,
were wheeled out in a walk to we'll chair at
about eighty four years. Yeah, I've decided I've got so
many more things I'd like to pursue. And that's no
(01:15):
disrespect because my family's been my backbone. My team have
been enormously supportive, and of course the community. So it
is also a very sad time after thirty years, to
each and every one of us and for all the
different groups. And of course I just always believe that
one door shuts, another one opens, and the opportunities for
(01:38):
my team I'm sure will be out there as well.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
So and look, it's you know, it's it's a big
decision to make. But as you've said, after thirty years,
I think you, I think you deserve probably a couple
of sleeps in Estel.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Well, I'm quite looking forward to a couple of those.
Of course I won't I won't sit idle, let's for sure.
I love my music, I love flowers. So you know,
two out of the three children have taken steps up
into our businesses, which I'm really proud of them and
looking forward to watching them grow. At the same time,
(02:14):
A Laura has certainly been a huge part of my
heart and soul, and like I said, it is will
always be a huge part of my heart and soul.
But at this stage in my life, I've decided I'm
going to hang up my gardening boots and my gardening club.
I'm still going to be around you pick me to me.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
And there are the other like you've got the beautiful
magnolia as well, don't you.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Yeah, we've got stel Florist and we've got all sorts
of things happening. Just next weekend, I'm off to go
and award present awards for the austrans More Business Champions
in Sydney. That's going to be a huge weekend for
me and I get invitations all over. Six months ago
I was over in Queensland. I did over a thousand

kilometers and judge thirty three gardens and then was a
huge part of their gardening expo. So you know all
these things that I usually say, look I'm a bit
too busy or what have you. I'm hoping they will
open many more doors for me to come August, I'm
off to Canada and I jam always in at the
same time. You know, I won't miss coming into the

cyclones worrying and wrishing my teeth. Have we've got a
cyclone coming? That's jolly shore Because we've had many challenges
over the years, but each and everyone's been, you know,
get up, dust yourself off and get on with it again.
But I've just done this out of love and respect
for all of us to say, hey, this is my
next stage, my next chapter.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
Well, and it's something that you have always done in
such a positive way as well, Estelle. You know, you've
always got a smile on your face, You're always happy.
That that absolutely recognizable voice as well that everybody knows
and you know if you have been such a territory.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Icon, Oh thank you. Well, I'm going to strand businesswoman
icon now. And guess what, there's some Territorians that are
up towards down there next weekend. So I'll be down
there flying the territory flag. I bought a brand new
one off ron in the Plaza just last week. I'll
be down there flying because I am Territory proud, and

I'll be flying the territory proud, and I'll be supporting
all those small businesses are finalists that are down there
next weekend as well. So yeah, I'm not going anywhere.
I'm right here and I've still got lots of energy,
but physically hard, jumping up and down on forkl digging
holes I love, but my body's saying, hey it, Stelle.

I think it's time to just step down a little
bit and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Fair enough, I reckon that's fair enough, Stelle.

What's been the highlights for you in business over the
last thirty years of a Laura Gardens nursery.

Well, I think the highlight was being recognized Australia wide,
winning my awards and getting into the Australian Garden Center
Hall of Fame, being a Celster twenty eleven Northern Territory
business woman, many awards, and the highlights have been the
community as well. The community that have supported me over

the years that have came in when I have had devastation,
picked up a rag or can I rag, you know,
sweep all the glass off the footpaths for you? The
robberies I've had, the people that have emailed me rang me,
thank you, thank you, thank you. I can't answer every
single one of you individually, but I send you all
my love and all my pisses your way because you've
(05:50):
been such great supporters over thirty years and more because
we've been in business a very long time. So thank you,
thank you, thanks. But you know, don't forget there's so
many opportunities out there. Just make it happen, everybody.

Yeah, such good advice. And Estelle, what's next or what
are the plans for the site?
Speaker 2 (06:14):
Oh? Just watch this space, Katie. We've got all sorts
of things happening. We've got uh, you've got to watch
this space. It's all I can say about that one.
But remember, we've got a mobile cafe, we've got a train,
we've got pods, plants, water features, garden, furniture, wind shines
and lots more going out at crazy prices. Only for

the next couple of weeks, mind you, and then it'll
be all over red rover and a clean slate. We'll
start again.
