Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now, the City of Darwin has collaborated with stakeholders and
the community to develop three brand concepts for Greater Darwin.
Voting's now open for people to choose which brand best
captures the unique character of the region, and the Council's
encouraging anyone who lives, works or plays in the Greater
Darwin area to be involved in the development of the

(00:20):
new brand. And the CEO of the City of Darwin,
Simone Saunders, joins me in the studio. Good morning to you, Simone.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Good morning Katie.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
Great to have you in the studio. Now, Simone, what
is this rebrand all about?

Speaker 3 (00:33):
So we don't currently have a Greater Darwen brand, and
so that would be anything from Darwin to Beach right
down to Pine Creek.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
And so what City of Darwin's looking to do is.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
Develop that Greater Darwen brand and really so that we
can not only for visitor economy, but drive our population
growth so people really know what it's like to live
in the Greater Darwin region and also for encourage investment,
entrepreneurialship and partnerships for the Greater Darwen Darwin region.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
It's like, it's it's really interesting. I reckon to see
how other places kind of view us or what they
potentially think Darwin is like as a place to live,
and very often they think it's a lot different, you know,
like some of the questions you get asked when you
go into Stata, when you go to different places, even overseas,
and then you're explaining to people what it's like, it
can sometimes be a bit of a surprise. So it

(01:19):
does seem like it's a good idea.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
Yeah, look, I think the thing is that quite often
where the gateway Darwin is absolutely to our beautiful national parks,
but we want people, you know, to come to Darwin,
stay a bit longer and linger and have a look
around the city and more broadly at the greater Darwin region.
So recently we did some stakeholder information sessions. We worked
individually with people that filled out in expressions of interest

(01:43):
to come up with three brand concepts. And so where
we are now in the process is there's three brand
concepts and we want people to jump online and vote
on these particular brand concepts. So one of the first
brand concept is live the Adventure, so really talking about
you know, people breaking out of their comfort zone and
experiencing the adventure of Darwin.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
The next one's called Lean into Life.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
And one of the things that people always say one
of the greatest things about being up here or coming
to visit is it's easy, you know, deadlines commuting you know,
around the city, so there's more time, whether it's you know,
our sporting facilities, you know, we've got some great experiences
here which are you know, ten minutes ten minutes away.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
So that's the second one, and then the last one.

Speaker 3 (02:24):
Is Alive with Color, which really does look at our vivid,
multicultural landscape and have a look at you know, celebrating
I guess the people, the personalities and culture. So we
really want feedback from the community on what they would
like to see and what what they see is a
potential new Greater dam brand just some mine.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
It's not going to be another boundless possible, is it.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
This is definitely not a boundless possible. So we've got
we've got the information already from the community. These concepts
that have been come up with have come up from
community members. So the focus groups and also the community
gets to vote on a vote on this.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Unlike a boundless possible, but definitely not good. Good to hear.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
Now, where is it sort of going to be used.
How are people going to then see it in other
states or other locations.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
Yeah, so we'll use it on collateral, but more broadly,
we'll partner with tourism top end and also the Northern
Territory government across the fact. We're developing this Greater Daren brand.
But if businesses want to use it, they can then
take We'll develop a toolkit and they can use that
to promote their business brands. It might be people that
are trying to recruit people to come into that Greater

(03:27):
Darwin region to increase our population. Also build partnerships with
potential interstate or overseas businesses as well. So multi use,
and we'll have the toolkit to hand out so that
people can use that.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
Now, where can people go if they do want to
have this If they're listening this morning and they think
I'd like to jump online have a look at these brands.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
Yeah, so they go to the Engaged dot Darwin website
and it's the Greater Daren brand and jump in there
and yeah, vote on it and provide us any commentary
that would be awesome.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
Now, just moving along, I know that the recyclone cleanup,
it's now complete. How much waste was collected.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Look, we had it.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
We had a significant increase on crease on last year
and we had seven hundred and ninety tons of waste
collected in that period of time. That is it's a
huge it's a huge amount of waste. But I think
the great thing that we saw this year is our
diversion rates were up. So last year it was approximately
thirty percent that we were able to you know, divert
from landfill to recycle, and this year it was forty percent.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
So we saw I guess HPA.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
So the shop out of Albay Waste Facility, they you know,
tables and chairs and furniture that can be repurposed, mattresses
that they can then they've got a special machine to
clean them that can be repurposed, steel, whole range of
other things. So the diversion rates rates up. But yeah,
it was a significant I guess reduction in those potential
projectiles that sit around the community during the cyclone season,

(04:54):
which is great to see.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
If some people are still putting things out on the verge,
I mean, what like, what is the going Now?

Speaker 2 (05:00):
That's it, right, you guys are done? Yeah, that's right.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
So if you put anything out on your verge, it
will it will not be collected. So take it back
with into you into your property and then use the
opportunity to take to show Bay waste facility, which if
you're a resident of Duh and there is no charge,
and take it out take it out to Shoal Bay
to remove it off the street because if we do
have storms that come, it can become again a projectile
in the streets. So please take it back into property

(05:24):
and take it take it to the tip.

Speaker 1 (05:26):
Now I understand that tomorrow is National Ride to Workday.
A local business is getting involved.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
Yeah, look, National Ride to Workday.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
We're going to be hosting a complimentary ride through breakfast
at Raintree Park, so encouraging anybody around the city if
you want to ride through and come through and grab
a snack in rain Tree Parks an idea. Yeah, there's
for the first fifty participants too, there's going to be
some free Boriscobree coffee from the rabbit Hole as well. Awesome,
So yeah, come in and all participants too. There's a

(05:58):
cycle Zones also donated a two hundred dollars outcher and
they can enter it.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
People can enter into draw for that, so, yeah to
anybody that wants to wants to ride.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
Tomorrow A good idea, good idea, how I understand. As well,
the City of Darwin's hosting a range of free events
in celebration of Children's Week. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:15):
So Children's Week runs from this Saturday, the nineteenth, through
to the Sunday, the twenty seventh of October, and we've
got a variety of events that are happening around the city. Also,
there's children's artwork exhibition that will launch this Saturday in
Casuarina Library and there's a free morning tea there from
nine thirty am. Also, though next week, we've got a

(06:37):
free movie screening on Tuesday, the twenty second, from three
point thirty to five pm.

At the City Library.

There's also a family free event with the Fun Buss
at Jingly Water Gardens next Wednesday, and then an afternoon
event at Lake Alexander.
