Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well.

Speaker 2 (00:00):
The Darwin Festival, one of the biggest events on the
dry season calendar. It is now underway with a massive
six one hundred and eighty performances on the program. It's
going to be running up until the twenty fifth of August,
with shows planned across a record.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
Thirty eight venues.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
The festival is set to offer something for all tastes
and ages, there is no doubt about that. And joining
us in the studio to tell us more is the
artistic director, Kate Fell.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Good morning, Kate, good morning. Lovely to be here. It's
lovely to see you. How the first performance has gone fantastic? Yeah,
we had.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
The park is now open and the Law and the
Spiegel tent, so it's all all up and running. We
had a beautiful event at the Darwen Amphitheater last night
and there's more to come this weekend. So yeah, all
the exhibition openings are happening. I just came straight from
the Teewe Island exhibition that's just across the road.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
Yeah, it's so good, it's so wonderful.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
I just think it's it's such a beautiful time to
be in Darwen, whether you live here or you're a visitor.
You can you can literally like walk outside your door
and experience the amazing art that is you know.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
It's happening absolutely and it's I think what's so special
about Darwin Festival is there's so much in the day,
like as I said, all the exhibitions, there's a great
exhibition down at the waterfront and the Naziers, and then
all night you can find you know, a party time
all through the night. So you know that mix of
all day and all night is pretty special.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
So tell me what are the sum of the highlights
for the first week of the festival.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
For adults first I okay for adults okay, So for
for adults up for a wild, fun night out. The
party in the Spiegod tent. It kicked off this week
and it is it's going off. It looks like a nightclub.
When you walk past Mystery, you see all these flashing
lights coming out of the speed Good tent.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
It's super fun.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
It's the same people who made Blanc to Bloc, but
it's a brand new show hasn't been to Darwen, so
it's got that everything you love.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
The amazing circus, the you know, very good looking.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
Performers, audience, interaction, all the fun things, So that's great.
And then what people also loving is Flight and Seance,
which are these twenty minutes sort of thrill secret experiences
right next to the Spiegel tent and you go in,
you sit down. The flight is like you're sitting on
a plane, the lights go out, You've got this headphones
on and it's all just imagined, like it kind of

(02:26):
plays on all your fears, but all kind of just
this sort of sensory type thing.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
So they're really fun. So yeah, that's a really great
night out. Yeah, it sounds awesome.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
And there what I love about the dam Festival is
there's something for everybody, right.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
Yeah, so then that's right. So you have the party
and that is absolutely adults only, you know. But then
this weekend we've got some fantastic shows for kids and families.
This afternoon, just you know, after work, Lisa Pellegrino is
the host of this great show called Kids Club Spectacular
all fabulous like dull and you know cast, which is

(03:02):
just going to be a gorgeous show for all ages.
And then this Sunday is the City of de and
Teddy Bear's picnic as well, and the Esplanade on Sunday morning.
So yeah, just lots of things for families in the park.
We've got this great new installation called Lost Dogs Disco,
this big, beautiful inflatable dogs and are just gorgeous, so
great for kids to run around and interact with.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
And it's just so nice as well that even you know,
like because there are a lot of families that maybe
don't have a lot of sort of extra cash at
the moment, might be doing it a bit tougher, but
there's something for everybody in terms of being able to
go and have a feed or go and have a
drink and go and check out an exhibition totally. And
we also what we do with the shows at the Ampitheaters.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
I say, if you're a Missy Higgins fan, that's on
this Sunday and kids under twelve are free, so you know,
we really you know, the same with our Ski Club concerts,
kids under twelve are free. It's just a really important
thing where you know, if you love music and you
want to go out, but you know, every time you
get a babysitter that's expensive. So you know, if you
can bring your kids in those outdoor venues where they
you know, they.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
Can run around and they're not going to worry anyone.
It's just a really great family experience.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
Yeah, nice and accessible for everybody, which is a wonderful
thing to do. Now, I know it's going to be
hard to pick, but if you had to have a
must see over this weekend, what do you reckon? Because
we will catch up with you throughout the festival the
next few.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
Does I'm going to say the Mirror Gravity Another Miss
Circus show started.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
Open last night and it is it's really stunning.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
So they do these amazing group acrobatics, like for anyone
who's kind of watching the Olympics and you know when
you're watching like the skateboarding or the thing and you're like,
oh my god, wow that those tricks they gravity Another
Miss the Circus is like that that feeling where you
watch them and you go, oh my god that you know,
they do just these incredible tricks. But it's really really
gorgeous play for there's this amazing news singer kind of

(04:54):
in the show as well, so and because you can
get really up close in our festival park venue, so
that's a really it's going to be a highlight this
week and.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
That sounds like it'll be awesome.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
Now I know the National Indigenous Music Awards are also
happening this weekend.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
What can people expect?

Speaker 1 (05:08):
Oh, thenme is that's there's an amazing lineup. I mean,
as everyone knows, the First Nation's music is just going gangbusters,
you know, and the Nimas has played such a big
role in that. And it's their twentieth year, so it's
a real celebration this year. And yeah, you know, there's
just such a great line just it's worth definitely checking

(05:29):
it out.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
Thing artists at you'll know artist that you've never heard of.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
You know, and you just get that really great spectrum
of all the music.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
That's half the fun of it isn't seeing what you know, seeing.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
Who you might get to say totally.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
Now.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
One paint is a picture as well.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
Of what festival path looks like this.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
It's looking beautiful.

Speaker 1 (05:44):
So it's such a beautiful special part of the festival,
the real heart of the festival. Tetchy every year kind
of creates this new beautiful bamboo design and this year
is no exception. There's a beautiful new wall painted by
Trent and Jason Lee, and then Nadine Lee has created
this this artwork on top of it as well, so
I love those kind of those parts of it.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
We've got free music every night, which has really great.
This year.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
We've really focused on the diversity of Darwin, you know,
really representing all of the different.

Speaker 3 (06:15):
Cultures that are here.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
So Saturday night we're having Latin Street Fiesta in the past,
so you know, so you can get up and dance
and yeah. So just really fun nights out every night.
As you say, you don't have to go see you
don't have to buy a ticket, just come to the park.

Speaker 3 (06:30):
It's great joy.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:31):
What's some of the food on offer?

Speaker 1 (06:33):
Oh? Iola getting a curry. We've got three moms, We've
got the pizza. Yeah, just all sorts of different things,
pretty much anything you want. You know, it's again represents
that real diversity of food, the field cultures here and da.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
What's it like for you, Kate, after such a huge
year of work, now sort of seeing it all come
to fruition.

Speaker 3 (06:59):
Oh, it's so much fun.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
It's sort of It's that thing where festivals you plan
all year and the two missing ingredients are artists and audiences,
and then when they come together and you see the
audience's response, you see the artists having an amazing time
and putting on incredible shows. But yeah, absolutely, that feeling
that you see with audiences.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
When they have that wow moment, that all moment, like,
that's what makes it all worthwhile.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Yeah, it'd be so cool for you. I mean you
quite often, like you get to experience some of those
shows before they come to town and you know how
wonderful they're going to be, and then seeing the looks
on people's faces would be really nice for you.

Speaker 3 (07:36):
It is really special.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
So, yeah, last night we had this show Big Name,
No Blankets at the Amphitheater and I saw it in Sydney.
It'd been a work we'd supported and it's an amazing
anti story that we wanted to bring back here. And
but you know, you never know, you still have that
moment of going, this is still going to work and
if people are going to love it, and just seeing
everyone up dancing and you're just having this fantas plastic time,

(08:01):
it's really special.

Speaker 3 (08:02):
Yeah, Oh wonderful stuff. Well, we'll catch up with you
over the next couple of weeks as well.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
We love hearing about what's going on at the Darwin
Festival and we really appreciate your time. This morning Kate Fell,
the Darwin Festival Artistic Director, awesome, Thank you, thank you.
