Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm very pleased to say that.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
The incumbent COLP member Leah Finocchiaro joins me on the line.
Good morning to you, Leah.
Speaker 3 (00:07):
Good morning Katie and to your listeners.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Now, Leah, we've got seven minutes to get through a
series of questions.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
It is all about Spillit. Are you ready to get started?
I'm ready, all right, Leah. Why did you decide to
put your hand up to run again?
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Representing my community out in Palmerstan is such an honor
and a privilege. There's not a day that goes by
that I don't wake up and feel proud to be
able to be out every day on the ground, listening
to the issues that matter most to Territorians and then
taking that fight into the Parliament, using that information and
that the wishes of our community to develop policy and
(00:48):
drive the territory forward. So it's an honor and a privilege.
And I know I've got a lot more service to give,
not only in my community in Spillit, but the Northern Territory.
And I'm here to put my hand up just con
he knew to serve the people.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
Leah, what would you say your major achievements are in
the electorate as the local member.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
One of my.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
Proudest achievements would have to be the delivery of the
Khali Primary School. That was something I had to fight
tooth and nail on for a number of years where
labor didn't believe that the coalie had grown enough to
support that school. But of course virtually from the minute
it opened it was full and now we're seeing demountable
classrooms having to be put in there. It's pushing i
(01:30):
think about six hundred kids and it provides an important
asset to our community and opportunity for kids and families
to be walking and getting to their local school. So
I'm very proud of that. But equally, I'm just very
proud of the way in which I've been able to
build and maintain connections right across the electorate, from the
(01:51):
schools to our fantastic seniors groups and everyone in between
sporting clubs. It's to be a member of Parliament, You've
got to be willing to be out on the ground
with people wherever they are listening to them, and I'm
very proud to have that grassroots track record over the
last twelve years.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
Leah, what do you see as the biggest issues in
the electorate.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
I mean, what are people telling you on the doors.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
It will be no surprise to your listeners, Katie that
crime remains a major issue across my electorate. I have
a lot of young families, it's so cost of living
is also a really pressing issue, housing affordability, which is
why the CLP has a very strong plan around home
builder schemes so that we can get more young people
(02:37):
and every territory and into home ownership. And that's why
we need to support Freeman ninjakockle be vaccines for our
babies from this awful and deadly disease, free swimming lessons
for kids to go to school and learn that important
water safety, you know, making it cheaper and easier to
access the motor vehicle Registry by freezing regiro prices. So
(03:00):
there's lots and lots of work the CLP have done
to recognize the cost of living pressures on families and
of course crime Katie, it speaks for itself. We have
a very strong plan for Week one of Parliament to
deal with the root causes of crime and give our
police better powers.
Speaker 1 (03:16):
Leah.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
Based on the issues that you have just discussed, how
do you plan to fix those issues I mean specifically
when you talk about the biggest issue of crime.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
So our plan for crime is around giving police better
powers than in week one of Parliament. So before the
year is out, we will have strengthen the laws around
police's ability to deal with public drinking and problem drunks,
around youth offending about wanting laws and a range of
other measures to give them the power to make our
community safe. We need to be dealing with the root
(03:50):
causes of crime and getting kids back to school. It's
a huge part of our focus of holding parents accountable
for their young person and making sure that we intervene
early in their lives to keep them on the right
track and not let them fall into a life of
crime in the first place. We want to stop crime
before it happens, Katie, and our lifestyle is very important.
(04:10):
We have to address cost of living through those range
of measures I mentioned earlier. The solar feed in tariff
is another one that's really taken people by surprise, where
labor cut the feed in tariff from out from underneath them.
We've been really clear about doubling the feed in tariff
in peak times and doubling the battery bonus, but we
can get people off the grid, saying goodbye to power
(04:32):
bills and using their own renewable energy during the day.
So our plan is for the territory. Our plan is
to rebuild it for a better future for all of us.
And I'm proud to be part of an experienced, dedicated
team who can deliver a better territory for everyone.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
Leah, why do you think you are the best person
for the role as the local member for Spillers.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Well, I'm a part of my community, Katie. The people
of Spillit are very very familiar to me because I'm
out on the ground every day with them, and we've
got unfinished business. It's really important that people see how
much we've achieved, but then how much is left to
go for the territory. There are challenging times ahead and
with that you need an experienced team of people to
(05:17):
be able to deliver on the aspirations and the values
of our community. And so I'm very focused on making
sure that we're able to live safely and peacefully enjoy
raising our kids here. You know that we need a
strong economy so that we can all have good jobs
and our kids can have a bright future. And stay here.
(05:39):
So I'm very focused about the future of the Northern Territory.
That's why I'm part of a team that will reduce crime,
rebuild our economy and restore our lifestyle.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
Lea last question, why should people vote for you?
Speaker 3 (05:55):
I've been a member of Parliament for twelve years and
I'm incredibly proud of this. I've given to my community
and I know that there is more to be done
to rebuild the territory. I'm proud to be a Country
Liberal Party member and the leader of a team of
people with the real world and government experience to turn
the territory around for the better. I know that what
(06:17):
needs to be done to reduce crime, and we have
the plan to deliver that. We need to be rebuilding
our economy so that territories once again that place of opportunity.
You come for opportunity, you stay for our life style,
and that isn't the case anymore, but it can be again.
The territory of today does not have to be the
territory of tomorrow. Katie and my team and I are
(06:40):
working incredibly hard to make sure territorians understand the choice
ahead of them. Early voting is happening right now and
when you go to place your vote this election, please
ask yourself is life better now than it was four
years ago? And can you and your family really afford
another four years of labor?
Speaker 1 (06:58):
Leah, twenty seconds left. Thing else you want to say.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
I want to really reinforce to people how important their
choice at this election is. Labor have been in power
nineteen of the last twenty three years and things are
getting worse, not better. We've got the worst performing economy
in the nation. Crime is through the roof, we have
the highest rate of police leaving the force in the country,
(07:22):
and our lifestyle we can barely go to the shop
and be safe. This is not the territory I know
and love, and it's not the territory it has to
be going forward. We're fighting for change and we need
everyone to support that both voting SCLP.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Leah, you have run out of time about ten seconds oversault.
Make sure we give Caleb the same amount of time.
Leah and Kiro are the current sitting member for Spillet
for the CLP. Thanks so much for your time this morning.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
Thank you. Take everyone and get out there and vote.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
Thank you.
