Speaker 1 (00:00):
A bit of a change of pace. Now as we
catch up with Lincoln Kirby. Now many of you will
know Lincoln. He's a wonderful bloke and he and his
partner Naomi have done so much since the loss of
their beautiful little boy.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Max to brain cancer.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
And as plenty of you will know, the family holds
a fishing comb each year in his honor. It's called
Max's Cast for a Cure. And Lincoln Kirby joins me
on the line right now, get.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
A Lincoln, Hey Katie here you going.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Good mate, Great to have you on the show this morning.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
Now, for anybody that doesn't know a lot about the
event or haven't heard of it, tell him what it's
all about.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
Well, really, it's all about just families getting out and
having a bit of a fish and raising some fun
so you know, brain cancer research and our church or
families you need. That's the rain bit of it.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
And you started the event because of little Max. He
love fishing. What was it like for you when you'd
go out and have a fish with him?
Speaker 3 (00:58):
Yeah, well that's you know. I guess everyone gets so
busy these days it's hard to find time to go fishing,
so you know, there's some of our cherished memories going
out in the water and spending time with the kids.
So I guess that's all, you know, what we're trying
to do without com give me a good excuse just
to go out. And it's not about the biggest fish
or the most fishes. Just go out and catch one
of our five species, take the kids out, have a
good weekend on the water, and then come down on
(01:20):
Sunday and enjoy our presentation link do you reckon?
Speaker 1 (01:23):
That's what makes the event so special is that it
is something that a lot of people do with their families.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
I think so. Yeah. I mean that's how sort of
just evolved. You know, everyone loves it because there's no
pressure on you and it's just more of a fun
day out. You know, everyone says, oh, you know, usually
too busy, got something on this weekend, But this just
gives you a good excuse today. Right, we're going fishing
that weekend. We're in the comp let's go.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
No, I agree, And you guys always have like massive
prizes up for grabs.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
Yeah, we've just had some amazing sponsors. Again kind of generosity.
People always blows us away, but yeah, huge prizes on offer.
You know, there's thirteen thousand dollars mind cooat of battery package.
That's just one of the prizes. And yeah, huge prizes again,
which is amazing now.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
In terms of you know, in terms of the actual
event and how it works, tell our listeners a little
bit more about that.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
So basically, you've got two days to go fishing. All
you have to do is catch one of the five
species or you do. You can fish anywhere in Darwin,
take a photo uploaded to the track while fish app
and then you just have to be down here by
three o'clock Sunday if you want to collect one of
your prizes when.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
We draw them out and tell me are the regios
still open or when do they close?
Speaker 3 (02:38):
The regis have just closed, so yeah, but people can
still come down on the Sunday and there's lots of
big raffles. There's door prizes. We're doing a big auction
on Sunday as well as heats a great auction items,
putting on a bounty castle for the kids. Muma's Kitchen's
doing some awesome food for us. So even if you
haven't registered by now, you can still buy some raffle
tickets for the comp and you can still come down
(02:59):
on Sunday and get involved as well.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Well, this is the thing. It's like, it's wonderful to
be part of.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
Regardless of whether you're doing the fishing part, you can
still come and have a good time.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
How many people are you expecting to take part?
Speaker 3 (03:10):
Look, we've already had over four hundred entries this year,
so it's going to be huge. Yeah, jumped on board
again and got behind us.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
So oh that's wonderful mate, four hundred entries. Like, how
does that make you feel when you sort of look at,
you know, at that first year and how much work
you guys are put into this event.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Yeah, it's crazy. It's hard to believe this is our
third time around. Yeah, it was just started off, you know,
we'll have a little small family fish and comb and
it just grew and grew and grew. And the amount
of people that have got behind us and supported us,
and you know, massive thanks to Tony Wood too. He's
been huge for us in the last couple of years
to help it to get where it is. And yeah,
all the committee members that have jumped in and helped
(03:51):
as well, we couldn't do it without them.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
Well, I'm not surprised that the community gets behind you guys,
and I'm not surprised that you've got a wonderful committee
behind you because you're a great bloke. You and Naomi
have done a phenomenal job with this event. How much
money are you hoping to raise this year?
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Look, for us, it's already about the final tota. We're
just happy, Like editing last couple of years, we've raised
over one hundred thousand. This year it's just about you know,
everyone just more given back to the teams, giving back
to the family. So you know, anything over fifty thousand
massive really for us.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Yeah, that's incredible, absolutely incredible. Now, which, like, which charities
are the funds going to?
Speaker 3 (04:35):
So we've did a couple of different charities last year,
so we've got a charity foundation brain cancer research, and
we also donated quite a bit of money to a
lot of local families that were needed. Unfortunately had to
go through the same thing that Maxie went through, and
you know, we know where the financial hardships are when
you get this sort of diagnosis. So you know, we're
(04:55):
trying to do as much as we can to give
back to the territory community as well.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
Yeah, that's a beautiful to do and you know it'll
be like I can only imagine how hard to be
for you guys often, you know, daily, and and then
to go out and help other families in the way
that you do. I think it's just such an admirable
thing to do, and to help them at a time
that you know that you guys know all too well
(05:20):
how difficult it is.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
Yeah, I mean, it's all about paying it for it.
I guess the amount of you know, support WeGo when
we had to go through it just blew us away
and it really does open your eyes how great a
community the territory is. Everyone that's got behind us mixed
one and four by nine has been massive. You know yourself, Katie,
you've been with us from day dot and help us out.
So thanks again.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Oh mate.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
You know, like I said earlier, it's not hard to
like what I you know, my help has been very
very minimal, and I know that a lot of people
in the community would feel the same. Giving you guys
that support, any kind of support is is a great
thing to do because you're great territorians and and I
love what you have organized Little Max. I just think
(06:01):
it's it's an incredible event and the amount of money
that you've raised, but the way in which you guys
have helped other territories is such that you should be
so proud of yourselves. Where can people go for some
more info?
Speaker 3 (06:14):
Look here, jump on our web page, Maxis Cars for
a Cure. There's heace of stuff on our Facebook page
as well if you want to jump on there. It's
got all the info. But the main thing is look
at your free Sunday afternoon. Just come on down and
get behind the activity and come and have a fun
day down here.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Lincoln.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
Always good to talk to you. Good luck on the weekend.
Made I hope it all goes smooth as thanks Peves.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
Katie appreciated it, no worries at all.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
Thank you.
