Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, we know there is always plenty happening around the
Northern Territory when it comes to property crime, ram raids, youth.
You know some of that youth offending and joining me
in the studio right now. He's probably one of the
busiest blogs in the territory. Strike Force Strident Senior Sergeant
Dale Mortar Barnard, good morning to you.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Good morning Katie, good morning to all your listeners.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
And it has been quite a busy time by the
sounds of it, we know that. Well. A little earlier
in the week we received a media release from Police
Media saying that a thirty two year old man had
been charged after he was allegedly caught stealing a car
and carrying ammunition. Now this happened, I think was at last.
(00:40):
Was it Friday last week or over the course of
the weekend.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
No, it was Friday last week.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Yep, talk us through exactly what went on.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
So there was a worker that belongs to a local
business carrying out some routine maintenance just at a unit
complex in Gray. He was doing his work, he had
the keys in the car. This male's walking I spotted
the keys and stolen the car. A number of phone
calls are made to police communications just about the manner
of driving to that vehicle, and then shortly thereafter, the
(01:09):
owner or the worker that had that car was called
up saying that had been stolen. That car was fitted
with a tracker, so the owner of the company is
also called up saying that he was live tracking it.
So at that point in time, tried and Dog Operations
Unit responded and that vehicle was located out parked in
some bush lands just behind Tumbling Waters Caravan Park. So
(01:31):
we set up a bit of an outer cordon and
then sent the dog unit and a couple of TRIDENT
members in on vehicles to apprehend whoever was with that vehicle.
That resulted in a thirty two year old male being apprehended.
Upon being searched, he had some ammunition on him. Beside
the car. There was a sawn off rifle loaded, and yeah,
he's been charged and remanded in custody with quite a
(01:52):
number offenses.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
That must be quite like a I mean, I know
you guys trained for this stuff, but when someone's got
a sawn off rifle must be quite a frightening sort
of situation. I guess you know you got you be
on high alert and I know that you know that
police dog Wedge and his handler. You know, everybody's on
high alert. But that's a dangerous situation to find yourselves in.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Look, I think it's a good reminder for us that
we never really know what we're walking into when we
approach these situations. I mean, it changes every single time.
But certainly that was a wake up call for a
few of us that, you know, when we're dealing with
these sorts of jobs, you just got to be aware
of those types of things and that it is a
real possibility.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
Yeah. Does it happen very often that people are armed
with you know, luck with a.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Gun, with firearms, not so much.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
We're pretty fortunate here in the territory and i'd say
probably Australia that a lot of the people we deal
with don't have access to firearms, but certainly edge weapons
and that sort of thing we come across all the time.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
Yeah, well, and even other things being used as weapons,
you know, sometimes things that you wouldn't even expect, I guess,
like you know, like rocks and all sorts of stuff.
So it's it's it pays to make make sure that
you are alert and aware of what's going on. You know,
that's just one of the arrests that you've been involved
in over recent days. I understand that there has been
a string of arrests when it comes to property offending
(03:11):
and also RAM raids.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Yeah, well, we're nine days into October now and we've
made forty one arrests in trident over the course of
those nine days. So it's pretty safe to say we've
been really busy in the property side of things.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Forty one arrests in nine days for what kind of offending.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
Look, we've had ram ray crime sprees. We've had stolen cars,
we've had armorphlan tries, we've had attempted robberies. We've had
everything going on pretty much, and it's kept us really busy.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
Yeah, tell me a bit more about these ramraid crime sprees,
because I think i'd heard about maybe one or two
ram raids. Were they linked or what's happened?
Speaker 3 (03:46):
So Friday last week, the same day that we apprehended
that mail amount at Tumbley Waters, during the early hours
of the morning, there were a couple of ram raids
involved in stolen cars that took place, one at the
Moyal Supermarket also another one at the Ski Club that
was the same group of offenders, so there were five
in total. We've arrested four. We rested them all last Friday.
(04:07):
They were all charged and remanded in custody over the weekend.
Two of them appeared in court yesterday granted bail, the
other two remaining custody. The fifth one was still working
on at the moment. We've got an idea who it is,
we just don't quite have enough evidence to get to
that stage.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
So two of them already bailed.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
Do you know their ages or anything like that?
Speaker 2 (04:28):
So they're all between thirteen and fifteen.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
I mean, that's going to make people like, that's going
to make people feel really pretty angry. I think upon
hearing that we know the Northern Territory government have a rey,
are there a set to introduce some rand raphe legislation.
I don't want to get you in any kind of
difficult situation. Obviously, you are a police officer and not
somebody who's putting together legislation. You know, I suppose the
(04:52):
very obvious question and feel free to push it away
if it's not appropriate to ask. But do you think
that some of these changes, like the Ramraaye legislation is
going to make difference.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Look, I think we'll welcome any changes that are going
to come in in that space. It's difficult. I haven't
been able to read the wording of the legislation. But
at the end of the day, the true tests for
any legislation is how the court determine it and then
how they deal with it in terms of sentencing and
things like that. So there might be a bit of
a period there where it's a bit uncertain how it's
(05:21):
all going to work, but certainly we'll test it out
and give it a go.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
With those forty one arrests in nine days, I mean
you touched on the ram rage incidents that occurred thirteen
to fifteen year olds. Two of them appeared in court
yesterday and have already been bailed. When you look at
the other forty one arrests, were they sort of people
across all types of age groups youth offending, So we've
(05:46):
had a mixture of adults and youths.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
Certainly the last week has been quite youth intensive, quite
a number of youth arrests. We had seven on Monday
out of one solen car. We've got four in custody
this morning from a number of different things, so quite
high numbers of youths, but there are also adults in
that mix.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
Tell me a bit more about the seven out of
one car.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
So we had a car stolen, So keys were stolen
from a business on Sunday night used to steal the
car about one am Monday morning. It would have been
about ten am on Monday. That car was spotted driving
around Palmerston. It was followed covertly by police into a
shopping center car park and all seven occupants of that
(06:31):
vehicle were arrested from within that car. So that again,
that was a strike force Trident Dog operations unit type operation.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Yeah, they're all arrested without incident.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
Now, then you also touched on I think there was
something overnight as well.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Look this morning.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
Nothing, There are some jobs from overnight we're investigating now.
Pinelands has had quite a bit of activity overnight. A
group of we believe it's adult mixture of adults and
youths have gone through multiple yards. Wire still investigating that
at this point in time, but we've just got some
arrests in the cells from other incidents of ongoing investigations.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
You guys sound like you are incredibly busy I mean,
as you touched on forty one arrests in nine days,
I know that you work really closely then with the
you know, with the dog squad and Strike Force Strident.
It sounds like it's sort of it's never ending. I
know you guys don't give up, that is for sure.
You certainly stay on top of it.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Yeah, we try and do our bit.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
Look, if we don't keep a handle on it, it
just gets out of control. So we're trying to do
our best to stay on top of it all and
keep things.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
As yeah as calm as possible. Hey, with Pinelands overnight,
So it sounds like there's a bit of a hit
in Pinelands. Was there a few different businesses broken into?
Speaker 3 (07:46):
There's multiple businesses now and I've got some of the
Trident members at the moment attending to those businesses as
we speak, collecting CCTV and taking statements, and then we'll
obviously work to try and identify who was involved.
Speaker 1 (07:58):
Do you know if there was much damage or stolen?
Speaker 2 (08:00):
I'm not sure at this morning time, Katie.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
All right, well, we'll certainly no doubt here more. I
know we've got lots of business owners that listen to
the show, so we might even have some of them
get in contact with us, but make sure they get
in contact with the police first. On one three one
Triple four, Dale, like I said, sounds like it's been
a busy time for you guys. Anything else I should
be aware of before I let you go?
Speaker 3 (08:20):
Oh look, Katie, we could probably spend all day talking
about the different jobs server have occurred over the last
couple of weeks. But yeah, look like I just want
to put it out there that we are trying to
do our best to keep everyone safe and bring those
responsible for committing all these offenses, put them before the court.
And then obviously what happens at the court that's out
of our control.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
We've just got to do our bit well.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
I know that the community appreciates the work that you do.
I appreciate your time. Thank you very much for coming
in this morning and having a chat with me. Stripe
Force Tried and Senior Sergeant Dale Mortar Barnard, thank
Speaker 2 (08:53):
You, no worries, Thanks Katie, Thank you
