Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote that, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds" in advocating the right for a person to change in order to experience greater personal growth. Don't limit yourself because of the expectations of others. "This Time" is a song about having the right to reinvent yourself. You have no real responsibility to be consistent, although you should always try to be kind and ethical. Those who knew you as a certain kind of person have no right to expect for you to remain that way. However, they have the right to take you or leave you at any time, whether you stay the same or change.
