Welcome to a special515TheUltra Podcast video.
(00:50):
I'm Larry Ryan, host of theshow.
I know that I am a source formany in the Ohana, so I would
like to address what has beenpublicly disputed recently about
the Ultraman Florida race.
I first heard that Jen McVeighwas out as race director from a
few different people coming outof Ultraman Canada at the
beginning of August.
(01:10):
It is my understanding from mysources that sometime between
February of 2025, after thedisqualification of Stephen
Keller from Ultraman Florida andthe Ultraman Canada event that
took place in August, that theparent company of Ultraman,
Ohana Loa, dissolved theUltraman board, created a new
(01:30):
one, and revoked the licensesJen had for both Ultraman
Florida and Ultraman Arizona.
Ohana Loa, as the parentcompany, owns the Ultraman brand
and licenses the name to racedirectors for fees and the
travel expenses associated withgoing to the races.
Ohana Loa was previously ownedby Jane Bacchus, but is now
(01:53):
owned by Cheryl and Dave Cobb.
They are both the owners of thebrand as well as two of the
board members and race directorsfor Hawaii World Championships.
Hopefully that clears up whothe players are and their roles.
The timeline of this alignswith Ohana Loa's Facebook post
(02:14):
on September 24th.
On August 4th, 2025, we endedthe contract between the
Ultraman Florida Race Directorand Ohana Loa.
We expressed our intention toput on Ultraman Florida 2026 and
requested the information tohelp make the transition easier.
In response, the race directoragreed to issue full refunds to
(02:37):
all athletes currentlyregistered for 2026.
I asked Cheryl if she wasinterested in appearing on the
podcast to explain what hashappened.
And she replied with a writtenstatement declining as she is
too busy working on races butoffered this.
Ohana Loa attempted to resolvedisagreements, but unfortunately
(03:02):
we could not resolve thedisagreements, so we ended the
contracts.
There is more to the statementthat she sent me, and I will add
that further on in this video.
But for now, I would just liketo start here.
Neither party, Jen, nor OhanaLoa Representative Cheryl Cobb
have expanded on thedisagreements between the two.
(03:22):
But one can assume it allrelates back to the
disqualification of the UltramanFlorida champion Stephen
Keller.
That happened three weeks afterthe event, and it was
instigated and enforced by themembers of the Ohana Loa board.
So, first, let's do a quickcatch-up on what happened to
Stephen Keller.
(03:43):
The reason that Steve wasdisqualified is that he was
using a voice-activated cameraon his bike to gather footage
for Ultraman promotional videos.
Steve was excited to attempt tobe the first person to complete
five Ultraman races in a singlecalendar year when the addition
of Ultraman Mexico was added tothe brand.
(04:04):
Working with videographer PhilCuppernel of Rambling Bear
Media, the two were attemptingto raise the profile of the
Ultraman brand by creating aseries of videos chronicling the
feat.
Here's a little of what thatlooked like.
Here's what he posted.
(05:20):
Now, I'm just gonna talk overthis because I'm not a hundred
percent sure that YouTube willallow the Pharrell song that
goes with this video.
I believe, though it's notconfirmed, that Jen saw the
(05:41):
value of what Steve was doing asa race director and believed
that she had the right to makethe call.
She did not penalize Keller atthe race.
Also important to know, SteveKeller and Jen are friends.
Steve has raced, crewed, andvolunteered at many of Jen's
events.
He coaches 515 distanceathletes.
(06:02):
He's also a previous championat Ultraman Florida and Ultraman
Arizona.
So three weeks after the race, the Ohana Loa board met and DQ'd
Steve and stripped him of histitle for breaking the rule of
filming during the race, whichyou can see here.
(06:24):
There has been a lot ofspeculation online about who
within the board instigated themove toward penalizing Keller.
Here's what the Ultraman WorldChampionship posted on their
Facebook.
As a board, and based onprecedence around this type of
violation, the directors of UMArizona, UM Florida, UM Canada,
(06:49):
UM Mexico, and UM WorldChampionships determined the
penalty to a rule violation thatwas made public by the
violator.
The Board of Aloha Hanaconducts its business privately
and will continue to do so inthe future.
The fact that so much of ourbusiness is now public knowledge
is quite concerning.
(07:09):
Now, according to StephenKeller, in a call with Cheryl,
he was asked to remove thevideo, make a new video apology,
and based on that level ofapology, his penalty would be
decided.
He refused to do that, but hedid apologize for breaking the
rule.
(07:29):
Here's what he posted onInstagram.
Steven Keller (07:35):
Alright, well I
thought it was time that I made
it official.
The five Ultraman attempts inone year is over.
Ultraman Arizona is thisweekend, and I will not be
raised.
To tell this story, we have tostart with the end and work
backwards.
According to Ultraman Florida, the Ultraman board has decided
(07:58):
that I should be disqualifiedfrom the Ultraman Race.
The Ultraman Florida RaceDirector has told me that I have
not broken any rules, but theboard has forced this decision.
The rule that has come intoquestion is the allowance of
having a camera on your bike.
(08:19):
As some may have seen, I posteda video after each day's
cycling portion, and uh Iincluded a video I recorded that
was with a voice-activatedcamera on my handlebars.
Uh during and after the event, the race organizers were aware I
(08:40):
had this camera and nothing wasever said.
Um but about a week ago Ireceived a call from the head of
the Ultraman board, and this isnow three weeks after the
event.
There'd been no communicationbetween me and the board up
until this point.
During the call, the UltramanHawaii Race Director confirmed
(09:04):
that the Ultraman Canada RaceDirector was very upset about
the allowance of a camera on thebike.
And that the Ultraman CanadaRace Director was adamant about
not letting this go without megetting penalized.
I was told that I would have toremove the video and make a new
(09:26):
video with an apology, and thatthe board would determine my
penalty based on the apologyvideo that I produced.
During this two to three minutecall, I apologized for breaking
any rules and admitted that Iwas unaware of this rule.
The head of the Ultraman boardsaid she believed me, but it was
(09:50):
creating more work for her andthe board now.
I expressed that everything Iwas doing up to this point was
purely with the intention ofhelping Ultraman as a brand, as
a whole.
And her response was thateverything I had done was a net
loss for Ultraman.
So after a day or so ofthinking about my situation, you
(10:15):
know, one, the Ultraman Canadarace director was personally
coming after me.
Uh, two, the head of theUltraman board saying that the
total of my efforts was a netloss for them.
And three, the fact that I wasgiven an ultimatum before any
(10:37):
discussion or conversation.
I just decided it was best tolet go of this project.
My purpose for taking on thischallenge was to celebrate and
promote Ultraman.
It was never about my ego orwhether I could do five Ultraman
races.
(10:57):
It was to help a brand that hasgiven a lot to me over the
years, but was clearly dying asthe race numbers continue to
decline year over year.
Ultraman never asked for myhelp.
So I probably should have juststayed out of their way because
(11:17):
it seems like they're on a paththat's different than me.
I never asked Ultraman foranything in return for trying to
support them.
I made them aware of myintentions at the beginning.
But this is how they decided todemonstrate their version of
Aloha, Ohana, and Kakua.
So I want to thank everyone whohas helped and supported me
(11:40):
along the way.
Congratulations to the winnerof Ultraman Florida, Teramasu
Matsuda.
And I appreciate once againeveryone's support.
Larry Ryan (11:57):
Again, this fact of
the ultimatum is in dispute.
According to Cheryl in a slowtwitch article by Kevin
McKinnon, Steve was not offeredan ultimatum.
He was told there would be apenalty regardless of what he
did, as he had violated a rule.
The consensus of the board wasto give him a significant time
(12:19):
penalty rather than a DQ, had hetaken the opportunity to be
accountable for his actions.
Now, I don't really know whataccountable for his actions
would have entailed.
Um, and obviously this neverplayed out in that way.
Slow Twitch and Facebook hadplenty of back and forth in the
(12:39):
comments on what happened backat that time, including Ultraman
Canada race director Brad Sawagoing back and forth with a
number of people, as he wasbeing cited as the person on the
board who brought the issueforward.
Jen has held to not sharingwhat was said in the board
meeting, but both of thesestories cannot be true.
(13:02):
Nevertheless, this appears tobe the reason for the Ultraman
breakup.
At some point between August4th at UMC and the beginning of
September, some negotiationswere happening between Cheryl as
Ohana Loa and Jen McVeigh.
However, again there is somedispute about what happened
(13:23):
next.
According to Jen, she wasnegotiating in good faith to
sell her race materials andinformation to Ohana Loa after
her licenses were revoked.
But this fell through.
It's my understanding thatOhana Loa stated that they would
buy the race and then failed tooffer her a reasonable price.
(13:44):
Ohana Loa remains the owner ofthe trademark and nothing else
related to that race, as nocompensation was ever offered or
given to Jen.
It was at that point onSeptember 11th that Jen did
indeed contact the athletesregistered for Ultraman Florida
to tell them that the race wasno longer going ahead and that
(14:06):
she would offer full refunds tothem.
Ohana Loa then posted onFacebook.
Unfortunately, rather thanissue the refunds as agreed, the
race director, without OhanaLoa's knowledge or consent, sent
an email to all registeredathletes incorrectly telling
(14:27):
them that the legacy of UltramanFlorida and Ultraman Arizona
has come to an end.
For athlete refunds from theoriginal race director, this is
the sole responsibility of JenMcVeigh.
She can still be emailed atultramanflorida at gmail.com as
she did not turn that over tous.
(14:48):
Please let us know when youreceive your refunds.
Again, Jen is the owner of theUltraman Florida properties
outside of the trademark, andwithout compensation, had no
reason to turn over any raceproperties or Gmail or anything
else.
Her understanding was that theraces were indeed at an end
(15:12):
because they had misled her anddid not go through with the
buyout.
In her mind, how and what wouldthey do to put on that race
without her materials?
Now I know that some of theathletes have been caught in the
middle of this and are confusedby what has happened, which is
why I'm doing this video.
(15:32):
Hopefully, to add a little bitof context, if not clarity.
Unfortunately, during thistime, Jen has also had to deal
with the passing of her father.
So I know that she's working onall of this in the most timely
manner possible.
On September 17th, Ohana Loathen posted that Ultraman
(15:53):
Florida was not canceled, butunder new ownership.
Cheryl went on in her briefstatement to me to say that
Ultraman Arizona is canceled for2026, and the board of Ohana
Loa will discuss the future ofthat event in the coming months.
Currently, we are focused onthe inaugural Ultraman Mexico
(16:14):
event and preparations for theUltraman World Championships and
2026 Ultraman Florida.
So, where does this leave allinvolved?
Jen is clearly out, as is herentire team.
She is processing full refundsto the athletes registered with
her.
(16:34):
And she has already created anew ultra format race, which she
will come back onto the podcastand talk about when her life
has settled down.
She has shared some of the planwith me, and it sounds very
interesting.
It's something she's beenworking on for a number of
years, and now has the reason togo ahead with it.
(16:55):
As far as the Ultraman brandgoes, well, the Ultraman World
Championship now has threequalifying races.
The Ultraman Canada race, whichhas had nine or less
participants for the last fewyears.
The new first year UltramanMexico race.
(17:16):
Good luck to Van Sanchez, whohas put on great races under his
old brand for 10 years.
And we actually recently did apreview of his race, so you can
check that out in the podcastlibrary.
And the third race will be thenewly rescheduled Ultraman
Florida that has just started totake applications and is
(17:37):
happening in a few months underthe control of Cheryl Cobb.
Now, personally, I feel veryterrible for Jen as I know how
much of her energy she has putinto the Ultraman brand.
I wish her all the best in thefuture, and I look forward to
her coming back onto thepodcast.
(17:58):
I hope that all the athletesinvolved in Ultraman Florida for
2026 under Jen are able toresolve their issues.
I understand that some peopleare out accommodation deposits
and perhaps even some flightcosts.
And I'm unsure as to how manyof them will want to sign up for
the event under its newmanagement, given all that has
(18:20):
taken place.
How and why this all went downdepends on which of the stories
you believe and how you fill inthe gray areas that the parties
are not publicly discussing atthis point.
I will continue to promote theraces and the racers that want
to be a part of this podcast.
