(00:00):
Hi Amy, Happy today is a very special recording of our
podcast. We have EJ Phillip from Match Me
Abroad Season 2 with us. Welcome EJ.
How are you EJ? I'm good.
How are you today? How are you feeling?
Perfectly great on a Sunday morning.
Oh, yeah, it's a beautiful, beautiful day here, and we're so
(00:22):
happy to have you on the show. Thank you for coming to talk to
us. Amy, you want to kick it off
with our first question for EJ, OK, so.
I think the first thing that I want to know is did you get any
info about Sarah before before you met?
If you need to show no, you don't know, I only know where
(00:43):
Sarah is originally from. That's all.
That's all I need. Thank you for the context.
Not even if you guys had similarinterests or if you had similar
goals, just this is a woman fromTexas, I go to it.
Really be jokingly off what kindof women I like.
And I kind of just told them, hey, I like blonde everyone I
(01:04):
like big ass. I was joking.
I was joking and they were laughing, so they was like, all
right, hey. I was like, I was the word
behind heart on his mind and yeah.
Well, they they really adhered to your standards with that.
When you met Sarah, did you no like within a relatively short
(01:27):
period of time that her love language was gifts?
Because we saw you giving her lots of things, including the
keychain. I thought, well, that's really
perceptive. How did he figure that out so
quickly? So did you or did somebody let
you in on that? No.
So it basically I like Valentino.
I really like Valentino. I think you guys watch on the
(01:48):
show. I have to bell, I have to chew.
And I had keychain too. So it was like a gift.
Because the period of the time was coming to Christmas.
I bought a couple of presents and I actually bought 1 already.
So I already had one ready and Igave it to Tara.
So yeah. So it's very coincidental that
(02:11):
it all printed like. It was it actually Mother's Day
when you gave the flowers to hermum.
It was past Mother's Day. It was a few days after Mother's
Day, Yeah. OK, that was also a really sweet
gesture that Amy and I noticed, and we were like, oh, this guy's
a good guy. No, Yeah, because because I lost
(02:31):
my mom. I lost my mom, and my mom was
very close to me. And I realized that Tara is
very, very close to her mom. So I think it's very, very
personal, right? Like, you know, if you want to
get to know someone and you know, someone's talk to your mom
and and I mean meeting her for meeting her mom for the first
time, I think it's a sweet gesture to like, you know, like
(02:52):
it's Mother's Day. Why not, you know, don't cut
contended. So it being little bit of a
gentleman by among sunflower. I think it's OK.
I think it was. It was a really good decision
and it was an absolutely beautiful bouquet.
I've never seen a bouquet being wrapped like that.
But that being said, how did youfeel about meeting Sarah's mom
(03:13):
so fast? It was actually a little bit a
little bit awkward because I mean, you want to get to know
someone and then you want to spend more time with them.
And then when they realized it'skind of like, here's my mom for
(03:34):
a minute, OK, a little bit worried.
But I think at the end of the day, if the mum really wants to
know me, then the mum gets to know me as a boyfriend because
I'm getting to know her daughter, right?
And I think it's OK. I mean, the mom gets to ask me,
I get to know what kind of person am I?
We both can actually get the green light and her mom for this
(03:56):
is quite important who look. So you charmed the pamphlet off
of her. Yeah.
Did you feel like the mom was having a say in who Sarah was
going to eventually choose? I did.
By the by the time I met the mom, it was almost already like,
hey, he's fine on the guy that Iwant you to meet.
(04:18):
Yeah, OK. He had already kind of like, OK,
you bought Mike then that now meet my mom.
It's be better my mom feel angryabout you.
I think that was kind of like the whole feel about it.
When we were watching the show, we hear a lot about how dating
in Singapore is a very slow process, that people like to
(04:39):
move very slowly. They they take their time in
getting to know one another and you don't cross the physical
barrier for quite a long time. And we saw that with you and
Sarah that you guys didn't even kiss until the 4th date or so.
It was a fair ways down the road.
Yeah. Right.
Is that, is that your experience?
(05:00):
Do Singaporeans take it much slower than, say, North
Americans? I, I don't think so.
I think it's just a vibe, right?For me, I'm a little bit more
old to my time again to know theperson and then we build on the
connection and I don't feel likeforcing on the first team, you
(05:22):
know, premature. It has to feel right.
For me, it has to feel right. But if I took my time, I really
wanted to get to know Sarah. I really wanted to know it will
on the same vibe and then the kids would be just no, you'll
feel natural. I don't want anything to be
forced, anything to be premature.
That's why I took my time. I really want to do a bike check
(05:43):
with her. So that's why you waited so long
to kiss her. Yep, I know.
She was like, she was like waiting for the kids.
Why? Just like kissing me and I'm
like, OK, calm down. I mean, you have to, you have to
feel right. I don't want to force it because
it's expecting it. And I, I don't know, really.
(06:05):
She was like, because she's really cool about it.
Like she's like, Oh yeah, you know, so I didn't know.
But for me, it always has to feel right.
That's important to me. She described the kiss as
fireworks. In her post interview.
She said that she really felt that there was some good
chemistry there. Did you feel the same way?
(06:26):
Well, I mean, it was a very strong and brief.
Yeah, it was not to me. It wasn't something that I call
fireworks. I mean, hey, maybe because he
was anticipating it more than I was.
She was waiting for the time whenever she got in, she was
like, whoa, what's going on? You know?
So maybe that's the reason why Chicago was firing for me.
(06:48):
I was not giving the kiss. I was the one in control of when
the gift was going to be given. So for me, I've got.
OK, So the one checked again to see whether we connect then and
how we bell and it and we feel, right.
It's a very intimate form of connection.
Yeah. And what's the part that very.
No, you know, whether you feel something for the football.
(07:10):
No. So then when it came to that
bodybuilding competition that you were supposed to be doing,
did you actually have a bodybuilding competition that
you cancelled? So what was that about?
Because it didn't look like you were ready at the time.
No, I mean, I think so pertaining to what everybody
(07:31):
says, that I was so far away from the competition it takes me
about one month to cut. And on that picture you do
actually work. I've already had my abs.
You could see a little bit of myabs.
And then what really literally like what, how many KG do I have
to do? I need to look like 5 KG to be
created. And it's mostly water, right?
(07:54):
So to me, drop 5 KG in three weeks, maybe the walk in the
park. I do that every Tuesday.
So it's normal. So for me, the only difference
for for the competition, what that's it.
I had one opportunity to get to know this person who flew all
the way in. Yeah, I have one opportunity and
(08:16):
you never know, it could be the opportunity of a lifetime.
But for me, I had to make a choice of where is could I go
for the competition or not, right.
And like I said, it will always be a competition, but there's
only could be one time, etcetera.
So that's why I can't put the competition.
So would you say it was worth itto have made that decision to
(08:38):
cancel and then to? Be.
On to have more time with Sarah. It's definitely worth it.
Like if definitely I the opportunity to spend more time
with her, to get to know her, toactually talk to her.
You know, honestly, it's only 1°.
I would never, never get to knowSarah the way I know Sarah if I
had not gone all the energy. So it was her.
(09:00):
It was a good trade off. She looked so happy when you
announced that you were not going to the competition and
were going to stay in Singapore longer.
Did she express that to you? Like was she really grateful?
Was there a lot of conversationsthat you had about this that we
didn't get to see on screen? She was actually in disability,
(09:22):
like she was in disbelief that instead I was in a candidate,
the competition. It was something that I also
decided last minute and I had toreally think about it really,
really hard. And I said, hey, no, why not?
And when I did it, I think he, you could see her affected.
She was really, really overjoyed.
(09:44):
He also wanted to spend more time with me.
It was, it was really mutual andhe she really enjoyed and at the
LD we had the connection and that's that's what it is.
Right. Yeah, We really did feel that
connection, didn't we, Amy? Like this relationship that you
had with Sarah felt genuine to us as viewers.
(10:09):
And I really love that about certain cast members of these
reality shows that Amy and I watch and discuss on our podcast
because it's those people who are most genuine, who take their
time and who are not overly dramatic about their
performance, quote, UN quote, onthe show where we see ourselves
(10:30):
reflected and those moments of real life that we can relate to.
So I really appreciated that about your relationship with
Sarah on the show because we felt like you were just being
you. Would you would you say that's
accurate? Have you heard from, like,
friends and family saying yeah that you were totally yourself
(10:52):
on the show? Yeah, after after watching the
store because I get to watch it the same time you guys get to
watch it. There's no blue put whatever.
And I am there every morning, Singapore time Monday, waiting,
watching the show with my group of friends watching.
And everybody's like watching itgoing, Oh my God, it's you are
(11:13):
who you are. Where I called out and been
bullish. They were like, yeah, this is
EJ. Yeah, this is this is who he is.
I'm like, Oh my God, I can't believe I said it.
And I was like, what? What did I just do?
Oh, my God. But but this is who I am.
That's who I am realized, right.I won't fall for the situation.
(11:34):
I'll try to be correct. I try to stay in the most, most
diplomatic way, but I'll get my point across.
Yeah. And that's who I am.
Were there any when you're watching the show as you're
describing, were there any othercast members who you watched and
you had already met them so you knew what they were like, and
(11:58):
then you found that they were being completely loyal to their
personalities on the show? Or did you find the contrary?
I don't really know all the castmembers would say before the
show, right? I don't know that.
Yeah, the ones that were in Singapore.
Yeah, yeah. So the cast members in
Singapore, like I, I don't know that like I don't, we, we don't
(12:18):
get to meet up before they stolelike very briskly.
And then you cannot say much. You don't say much to them.
You can't talk much to them. So you don't really get to
accept their personality. Yeah.
So, but we did an interview after that, the three of us, 3
gentlemen and Paddy was kind of like the character they were on
(12:41):
the show. They were true to who they were
again. So Sarah brought up kids pretty
quickly. What did you think about her
plans of having kids within one year?
A resisting It takes more than one year to get to know someone.
(13:02):
Yeah, Yet alone having your own place, which I already have a
plan. Yeah.
It's easy to say that you want to have a kid, but there's a lot
of planning that goes into having a kid, right?
And us being away from each other, me living in Singapore
and he being in the state, Texas, it's already a very big
(13:25):
logistical issue. And it sounds really good on
television to say, hey, it's gota one year plan.
I want to do it. I could be the guy and say,
yeah, but I'm not the guy because I'm going to tell you
the truth. So many things that we have to
go through before Katie went think for wanting to have a
baby, to take responsibility. It's not something that you just
(13:46):
say, hey, we're going to the baby, let's do it.
The process is fun. Don't give me the thought.
But but you have to take care ofthe baby there, you know, and
that's real thing that and thesethings need time.
You need to sit down with the person and you need to
understand that that's the rightperson for you before making the
decision. So for me, if I wasn't really
realistic one year, I mean, honey, it's not realistic.
(14:10):
But no, it had to be real. I tell, hey, if it happens, we
feel together and we can make ithappen, then why not?
So sometimes you never know. The one year you realize, hey,
the person for me, let's do it. You never know.
But then again, you have to be realistic with yourselves.
Yeah. Do you actually want a family?
(14:30):
Do you want kids? Yeah, for sure.
I mean. With his muscles and his tank
top. Little tank top.
Dad, show me how to work this machine.
Baby's first tank club. So did Sarah ever talk about
(14:54):
considering other options than having a baby right then and
there within this year plan of hers?
Did she ever mention freezing her eggs or using a surrogate?
Something that would allow her more time to get to know her
potential husband and father of her children.
No, there was no thought about. Yeah, that was the only thing.
(15:15):
That was the timeline. I think we were working on a
timeline, good timeline and my timeline.
That was the primary thing that was like, OK, this is what it
is. Oh, is Sarah a picky eater?
OK, Eater. I mean, we went to the
restaurant, we had food, OK. I mean we kind of like ordered.
(15:40):
She was quite comfortable with the food.
The restaurant was nice. So the food was really nice.
So it was OK. I think she didn't have a
problem. It was quite OK.
I find that quite surprising because she just seems like she
would be super super picky. I mean, I think, I think because
the the the variety of food at the restaurant is more tough
stuff. It's kind of like small bite.
(16:01):
So it's like going to be just getting a couple and we share.
So it's kind of like easy. So it was like like big, big,
big food around. So yeah, it was a tough part and
cocktail bar. So it was quite.
Nice. So that means that you're also
not a picky eater. No, I'm not actually.
Only during competition period. Then I kind of like really want
(16:23):
to die with, but I didn't. I mean that I kind of eat, I
kind of know my body already. I know how my body responds to
food and I know when I can have my cheat meal so.
What's your ideal cheat meal? Oh, I love a burger, man.
I love a good solid burger. With bacon and cheese.
(16:46):
Yes, no full loaded that's making me.
Hungry. Oh no, you made Amy hungry.
This is very. Bad.
Here we go again. Yeah.
OK. So I want to know about the
highlight of being on the show for you.
Yeah, maybe of being on this show.
(17:08):
Well, I mean, it's it's it's a very different experience.
I have been on television beforesmall, small teens and that.
But this is a reality TV show, right?
So everything happens is real. You're not scripted.
There's no script whatsoever. Everything is emotional at and
when you believe you see the wayyou want to see.
Yeah. And it was a bit difficult for
(17:30):
me because there were many times, quite a time where I was
feeling a bit of emotion. But I have to like, hey, OK, the
camera's here just kind of like,OK, going down a bit, you know?
Yeah. I mean, it was a good experience
for me. And at the end of the day, the
camera picks up everything you are.
(17:51):
And you did. What is it right?
Yeah, but that's an interesting point about you saying you have
to rein back your emotions at certain times because, you know,
the cameras are watching. I've often thought when watching
this show and other shows like it, that it would be helpful for
couples to have cameras wheneverthey have an argument because it
(18:12):
does give you that, that self consciousness of not wanting to
look like, you know, you're losing your temper, whatever it
is, you know. And so it's interesting to hear
you say that because I have a thought about that a lot if
having a camera in your face actually does have an impact on
(18:33):
how you respond in certain situations.
I mean, I think that really doesconstantly already there, right?
You already know, like for me, Ithink the last part we had sent
her off to the end. That was quite emotional for me,
but I was really feeling really sad.
Like I was really, really sad and just suddenly just came out
(18:59):
right. I'm saying more times were
really gentle and I'm like, why am I feeling between man?
Why am I feeling all this emotion?
Suddenly I'm like, oh just between every.
Time. That was a very a very emotional
scene. And Amy and I both felt like
Sarah wanted you to run after her and do something, whether it
(19:21):
was saying, oh, I'm going to flyto Texas next week.
I can't bear to be apart from you or begging her not to leave.
Did you get that feeling too? It was a very clear goodbye,
like you said right, like there was a lot of things that we
maybe because ever was there probably we we didn't want to
(19:42):
lay out so much emotions becausewe were real great for that, you
know, and make sure we hope 01 second the camera was OK guys,
can you say your goodbyes and wecould actually spend that time
to get to say a proper why goodbye.
But I can say it was oh, she walked away 05 more minutes.
(20:12):
Yeah, that was by my emotions like Oh my God, and I felt
overwhelmed that time. I don't know why, but it was
just very. Very weird, like very.
I mean, you spend all this time with equipment, going out with
them, making a connection, a real connection and ever you
didn't leave it hit you like it hit you.
(20:33):
So that was that was that was the big one for me.
How long did you actually spend with her?
Like how long was she in Singapore for?
We had like 2 to three weeks of living.
OK, so that's a decent amount oftime to start dating.
So I mean, because when we are believing, it's just me and her
(20:53):
in our little bubble and right, so every, every emotion, we, you
know, every love, everything is just focused.
Did you find that the cameras were like disorienting in any
capacity? Like did it make you second
(21:14):
guess anything? Because I was really, really
more focused on the moment, whatthe camera was on.
I just like totally do now and Ijust focused on the moment and
maybe refer and trying to make the best of our connection.
(21:36):
Do you think that the editing captured your personality and
also Sarah's? I think I did like, for me,
whatever people may say, I thinkTara is a really, really nice
person, right throughout the whole filming and good field.
She's very genuine. You know, she didn't try to play
(22:01):
a party. She was very, and she was
really, really invested in the connection.
And I could see that and that's why I was willing to invest.
You know, it's a vibe thing. Remember I told you, it's a vibe
thing. If I feel the white from her and
it feels right, then I will definitely want to open up more.
But if I feel the white is off, then I wouldn't want to.
(22:21):
I will be like, you know, havinga little bit of a wall,
whatever. But I felt that.
I felt like he also being invested in the whole city.
Forget me. Yeah.
And to repeat what B said, like you just seemed so genuine with
your presentation. So it's so incredible to me, to,
(22:41):
you know, to meet you and to seethat you are as genuine as you
were on the show. Like it's just, it's, it's so
great to see that it's not, it'snot fabricated.
And that makes us so much more invested because these are real
people. These are real emotions.
These are real experiences. And this is really what what we
watch the show for. When Sarah left, when she went
(23:03):
back to Texas, did you guys communicate much at all?
Yeah, we did. We did.
We did for a while, we did talk, but then it was very difficult
at the time he served me workingin the morning.
I start my day at almost 5:00 AMin the morning for the time I
start my day, I'm up, he's about, you know, it's a
different timeline. We talked for a little and then
(23:26):
that's it. And it was very difficult to
keep up. I think that's where we kind of
lost our connection, right? The reality is some kid more
harder than you want. Like everybody thinks long
distance relationship is easy, not when you have to go through
a different timeline, you know, a different time zone and you
having her own thing to do and me having my and actually quite
(23:50):
a lot. Yeah.
So she must have started her other relationship because we
know that she's now with somebody else.
At some point, did you guys justkind of drop off and then she
started dating somebody? Or did she just just one day
come to you and say, look, I've met somebody so.
I think we we drop off, we drop off before if you ran into this
(24:14):
like we dropped off and then before I knew it, she's in a
relationship already. So I mean, I'm happy for her.
She she found if I will look andthat's important.
He went for the tool to follow look, and if it's not with me
and this is the common that she actually really, really loves
and and you know that the guy loves her too much and she has
(24:34):
the fairy tale ending, which is great.
I only want the best for her, but everybody loves to buy for
her. I like to think that Sarah
learned from the show more of what she was truly looking for
in dating you. Maybe she saw a window into the
kind of relationship that she actually wanted for herself.
(24:54):
And then when she went back to the States, she was more able to
clearly identify that in somebody else.
An alternate EJ, if you will. And that's why she was able to
have a successful relationship. Yeah.
Longer hair. We should put a wig, a wig on
EJ. See what happens.
(25:15):
Do. You have a wig around that that
gym in there. No, I don't have.
Well, I mean, I think, I think everything happens for a reason.
Yeah. Like being on the show, meeting
Sarah, everything happens for a reason.
And you think she followed up atthe correct time.
(25:38):
I think it's important and like,it's it.
Everybody deserves to be happy and I'm glad that she's happy.
Absolutely. What do you think was the most
eye opening part of being on theshow?
You know, seeing yourself on theshow, the way that it was
conducted or filmed. What are your thoughts on that?
(26:04):
Omi, very awkward every time youlook at your spell.
Auditional OK, and then you expect yourself to like, it's
almost like I forgot what happened on this show, like like
I am usually. I was like, oh, did I said that?
I'm like, it was it was like it's not part of the show.
(26:26):
I told you I'm like, Oh my God, it's sit there.
Like I said, it's not in the moment, right?
Because you're in the moment, right?
When you're in the moment, you don't really, really like, you
know, brilliant. Remember, those are all emotions
and all how you feel. You don't have a record of all
that, right? You have the record of how you
(26:47):
are with that person and certainhighlights of the so that you
actually like had a connection or something happened.
That's only what you remember. You don't remember the whole
line of video. You don't remember?
Luckily, it was all filmed. It was so funny, right?
So funny, right, the part where I ditched in Borish.
(27:09):
Oh my God, they have to hire. They have to make that one of
the main point. And so like definitely my.
Did you get? All my friends after that
comment. Yeah, that's EJ.
You could say that anytime you have that, EJ.
Now I'm like, Oh my God, I'm so she's in trouble.
(27:30):
And that night, that night I spoke well, and she's like,
people, huh? No, you know what I mean?
And she's like, we have a joke about it.
So all good, All good. Yeah, when you said she looked
like a bimbo, I was like Oh yes, yes, I'm in for this dude.
(27:52):
What else is going to come out of his mouth?
Do you still think she's a bimboor was that just comment?
I mean, hey, he's a very smart, intelligent entrepreneur.
He's really smart. And coming from one entrepreneur
who runs my own business, I lookat her, he's really smart.
He knows what she's doing. So don't let the outer but that
(28:16):
told you he knows he's smart, he's intelligent and she knows
what she wants and she goes around and get it so good for
her, man. I really, really regretful for
that. So how has your search for love
been going since the show ended?Where it end out?
(28:39):
I think eventually, like now I am seeing somebody and so I am
with somebody right now. Wow, that's fantastic.
You can't tell us anything aboutthis person.
Where you see like, like Sarah, the right person come to you
(29:01):
when you need it, right? It's not about looking for love
for what you want. It's about who you need.
And I think this person came to my life in a point of time where
I actually needed her. And he just appeared and it's
been good. It's been good.
Is she in Singapore? Yes, Egypt, Singapore, which is
(29:27):
newly integrated in Singapore. But he's not originally from
Singapore. No Came to Singapore for work so
and Yep. Well, that's great.
I'm glad you found someone. What about what about, Obviously
(29:49):
there are going to be a lot of women who are trying to contact
you on social media, sliding into your DMS, all that stuff.
How have you been handling that?Well, I am, I'm obviously like
kid night or hide behind to them.
You know, the other day I just try to keep a connection, but
(30:10):
nothing, nothing more than what needed to be done.
It's a boundary, right? I am someone with on television
and some people just like to keep connection.
So it's OK, right? It is what I did.
(30:33):
What advice would you give to someone who is looking to be on
the next season of Match Me Abroad?
Be yourself, because if someone's going to love you,
they're going to love you for who you are.
Don't try to be who you're not 100%.
Be yourself and you'll enjoy thejourney even more.
All right, So be yourself. Be yourself.
(30:56):
Be your most cookie film. Be your original self.
If you're going to be who you are, be who you are.
Is that your dating advice? Is that your dating advice?
Just be yourself. Well, I try to be myself.
I mean, I do try to be who I've got.
And so far it worked out for me.I mean, people either like you
(31:17):
or they don't. It's a, it's a, it's, it's a yes
or no, right? And if it's a yes, then do you
have to get to know you? And then it becomes something
else? Yeah, Right.
I mean, people will like, you know, people will like to, you
know, for the first time they could see you.
They may be fascinated by who you are as a person.
But then after getting to know you, they catch it.
(31:38):
So it's always getting to know people getting the vine check,
right. They think it's confusing.
But. And also with Irene.
Yes, absolutely. Have you had any contact with
any of the other cast members? So I'm friends with all of them
on Instagram. All of Sarah's other matches.
(32:03):
Sarah matches, Yeah, and the rest of the task for Make Me
Abroad you. Know the ones in Ireland,
Brazil. Yeah, Veronica, Monica,
Bernardo. No, no, Bernardo, Bruno, Bruno,
Harold and Amber. Nobody knows that.
(32:25):
Nobody needs. Maybe I can give him something
to get a pint help a day. That would be great.
I'm not sure that it would go anywhere with him.
But I mean, he might listen to you because you're a man.
Oh. Yes, that's a good point.
Maybe. I don't.
(32:47):
I don't think it's worth your time.
Maybe I should be in the next match window?
I would love that. I'd love to see what your advice
would be your. Pointers adopted.
Brutal. No.
(33:07):
We saw, we saw on the show that you know, Dolly gave both Harold
and Sarah some pointers when it comes to dating in Singapore.
Did you get any pointers as well?
No, I know I do. You're perfection and you do
everything which says I didn't have anything to go, just go EJ
(33:29):
go. And I was like, OK, so I guess
he's. He's the, he's the matchy, he's
not the match. So he's doesn't get the same
privileges of of having the inside information.
(33:51):
And all the pretty new my kind of personality, they kind of put
that I want. So they were like, OK, this guy
is OK, let me let it be. This guy's cool, we don't need
to coach him on anything, just let him go.
Sent him prawn fishing. Oh my.
God, is that something that you've ever done before?
(34:13):
Prawn Fishing. I have done it before.
It's really like going fishing. Yeah, I can get the catch.
You get to get the catch earlier.
This is you don't have to wait three hours more.
OK, Yeah, yeah. You get to call, you get to like
HEPA. No, IE you get to catch
something, cook something. That's probably good thing.
It's a really fun. Now think it's a very, I
(34:38):
wouldn't call it Singapore thing, but it's kind of like
being where you know, you don't want to just you want to chill
out, you just want to talk Perfect, please.
Well, it just looks like so muchfun.
Not only did you get get to catch them, but then you got to
cook them and eat them, and clearly that's my favorite.
(35:01):
Thing could we ask some questions that are not related
to the show, just about you, DJ,is that OK with you?
Yeah. OK.
So first of all, we see you're in the gym.
You're obviously coming from a workout or about to work out,
although it's very late at nightin Singapore right now.
Are you still entering bodybuilding competitions?
(35:22):
Is that? Happening more I guess yeah, it
needs to 1 bodybuilding competition recently, the same
one that I was supposed to do last year, the one I cancelled
so I went for it this year. Great.
I need a bit more time to prep because it was a prelude to the
World Championship. So everybody go in there, it
(35:43):
talk like they had like 6-8 months of prayer and I went even
to release some of prayer. Same again, me going in the last
minute, giving it all without. But hey, I learned, right?
But now my next competition is actually a boxing competition.
So it's on the 20th of November and actually the biggest boxing
(36:06):
event in Singapore, the white collar in Singapore.
So I participated in that. So now I'm actually in my boxing
training. Is this the first boxing match
that you've done? I was official boxing match.
OK, thank you. Yeah, because I used to do Muay
(36:28):
Thai, hence I got there to do Muay Thai also.
So I used to do Muay Thai. I teach Muay Thai, I'm a
kickboxing coach, but I haven't done boxing because boxing is
totally different and for me, boxing requires a lot of
footwork and I'm trying to learnthat particular muscle arm.
So again, back there. I love that I I love boxing.
(36:49):
I think it's, it's so much fun. But kickboxing is even more fun
because you get to use your legsso much more.
What are the bodybuilding competitions that you've won?
What titles do you have? So I won one in 2018.
I came in Max three-week for open category and I came in
(37:12):
another one second for market in2050, but no pro.
Yeah. So I've been like building up
fine. What the building is getting
powerful that you grow older, not so easy anymore.
And to catch up, if you take a year off, it's very difficult to
catch up because people really put in the effort.
(37:33):
People are training, 7 days willbe 365.
You just eat the next level. And for me, again, I'm not a
bodybuilder, I'm a business coach.
Bodybuilding is my passion. It's a very big different.
Yeah, I don't think a lifestyle of a bodybuilder.
I'm a coach. So I have my cheat days.
(37:55):
I do want to want. For me, fitness is the bio and
bodybuilding is a fashion that Ilike them along with boxing.
Kickboxing is not all my fashion, so Mommy, I try to keep
it very well-rounded in terms ofmy fitness so I don't just be 1
sided in terms of my thinking and my philosophy of training.
When it comes to your to your competitions, either
(38:17):
bodybuilding or boxing, what's the difference when it comes to
your training? So bodybuilding, the body is
kind of like because you're trying to hold on to as much
muscle man that you have and youonly do cardio towards the end
so that you just burn off whatever you need.
The fact that you need where else you do a competitive sport
(38:40):
like boxing or kickboxing, you don't care about your beats so
much in almost for performance and endurance and your cardio
have to be on a high because allabout endurance, right?
You have to make sure that you can last that three minute
round. Yeah.
And it's really, really, really hard on your endurance, your
cardiovascular 300. There's very two different forms
(39:03):
of training all together, two different forms of training all.
So yeah. You seem incredibly
knowledgeable about not just your body, but about training
and cutting, and any chance you have a book coming out?
So yes, I have my book coming out.
(39:28):
I decided to write a book. The book is basically the title
is what your personal trainer would tell you about lunatic
fat, right? It's already industry secret
where all the trainers know the battery for competition.
People trade celebrities and putthem under these conditions to
help them to look the part they need to.
(39:49):
It's all the different that I'm going to fit in my book.
The diets, the huge part. Whatever you name it, if there's
ten ways to lose fat, I will be talking about that and telling
(40:09):
you in the spec of which is dangerous and which is not.
What work, what doesn't? And at the end of the book, I'm
giving them a 30 day program. And if you follow, you're bound
to lose up to like 18, about 20 pounds, 20 lbs.
Yeah, so the book is a kind of atell all about the industry and
(40:34):
to give you highlight about a lot of things that are happening
which the Internet don't talk about, all trainers don't want
to talk about because it's either illegal or it's taboo to
talk about. So I open up all the topics in
my book. When is it coming out and are
you going to send me a copy? So the book is The launch of the
(40:55):
book is expected to drop in mid November, but we already need
opening up for Brazil and putting up for Brazil.
So Brazil, if you come and get in for the Brazil, what's going
to happen is you're going to have a free one week online
training. So I'll run you through A1
program to dial you up to actually hold your hand and to
(41:19):
teach you what you should do andwhat you shouldn't do in terms
of diet and training. Probably one week.
So you have that one week of time with me and then with the
book you get to continue for thenext three weeks to hit your
goal. Yeah, so that's the bonus that
you get the pre-order. And then with that also I'm
giving in things like I'm givingyou video, video graphing
(41:41):
everything like training programs, diet plans, if you do
the pre-order, right. So pre-order starts tomorrow.
Actually tomorrow the pre-order starts and if you want to get
the book then I'll read down my website.
So it's on my website. Go to my website, the link is
(42:04):
there. Click on the link, get your
pre-order done, and I'll get in touch with you and we'll talk
about how we can start within the program.
Does my free copy come with thatweek?
You, you and me have a free copy, OK?
All right. You and B have a free coffee,
OK? Awesome.
(42:25):
Thank. You thanks.
Oh, oh, you're gonna get a hot coffee.
Sign by me. Even better, even.
Better. I love it.
I'll take what I can get, man, it's been, it's been difficult
getting back into the gym after after so long.
I, I, I find you so inspiring, like just to like to see your
(42:45):
cuts and how quickly you're ableto, to achieve those results is
just so, so incredible. Like I remember when I was
competing, trying to cut was thebane of my existence.
Like it was just awful. And obviously everyone knows how
much I love to eat. So having to limit it was just,
(43:09):
oh, it was awful. Please don't do that to me.
I got a quick question for you EJ.
I noticed on one of your profiles that you have a scuba
shot. Are you a scuba diver or was
that a one time thing? I had.
Awesome. What are you?
What's what's your certification?
So I've opened water diver not not so much of like the advance.
(43:34):
Yeah, because I believe that with the scuba diving everything
you have to take your time and make sure you're good at it
because it is dangerous if you you hook up.
So you need to be very, very sure and you need to
continuously dive. So this year I I managed Tony
Brock who dies, which is not so good.
So you have to continuously likedriving is like every other
(43:54):
thing you have to put in accurate to get better, right.
So for me, I love I love it. I love Bali, I love diving like
the Pope and away holiday. Well, B, aren't you a master
diver? Is that what it's called?
Yes, yes I am. But I was going to ask you,
since you're in that part of theworld, what are your best or
(44:16):
favorite diving spots? Because because I'm just up, you
want to dive, but I cannot go tolike really, really I
understand. And Bali, Bali itself has a lot
of good places. Bali, I've got Bali and I've got
in Boracay. It is the Philippines, beautiful
waters with the military, beautiful.
(44:40):
That's amazing. I love the good catch be.
I notice things, yes, just diving in Canada is it's very
different from diving anywhere where there's good visibility
and a lot of light and a lot of fish life and warm.
So there, there are fish, there are fish, they're just mostly
(45:04):
bass and everything is quite dark and very cold.
It's not the best. I I recommend going somewhere
nice and warm. Although I've never had the
privilege to go to the Far East,so I would love to do that.
Go to French Polynesia and do Thailand, Bali.
The the waters are beautiful visibility, it's nice and warm
(45:28):
be a lot of a lot of lights underwater.
It's it's a mistake. It's, it's just being in another
world altogether. Yeah, it's a good a good trick
from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Yes, absolutely. Absolutely all.
It's cheap. Like to die with Bali's cheap.
(45:49):
Really. Yeah, not really expensive.
OK, good too. I've never gone diving before,
but now I have to add that to the bucket list.
Thanks guys. Costing me money everywhere I
go. We'll.
Have to organize a trip to the Caribbean sometime and you can
come with me. I will take you.
(46:09):
OK. Let's do that.
Going back to the whole fitness thing, does your book touch upon
fitness advice for women and specifically perimenopausal and
or menopausal women? For a friend, Not for us, not
there yet. More about enough 3 tips be
(46:32):
good. I don't go on specific topics
like menopause and all that because that is going to come
out in the second edition. So I'm coming out with three
books actually three different. 1 is about weight loss.
Another one is about muscle building, pretty muscle
building, all the tips, secrets, things that you will never know.
(46:55):
And the last one would be Wellness.
It's all about Wellness where weare talking about anti, anti
ageing, all the stuff. So it's going to be 3 Series,
the first one in weight loss. Yeah, finally more menopause and
women start more on the last book on the entire engine
because then it comes to play with all the homework balance
(47:16):
and whatnot, right, Because it really what it is in terms of
balancing your homework for women.
Once we understand how to bent the whole technically you've got
the weight loss and Wellness part really on three.
Well, I mean, it's way too earlyfor both Amy and I to be even
thinking about one of these problems.
(47:37):
So when, when we get to that phase of our lives, we will read
the book. I feel like when the book comes
out, it's going to be a reality.Oh my God, dude.
But what do you do with talking about Yeah.
So don't. Don't write it too quickly
because I'm not ready. OK, I have just a general
(48:03):
curiosity question. Do you watch reality TV?
Are you a fan? It's not for my life.
I don't what reality TV show, not that I like.
I saw them actually on Singaporereality TV show which you took
(48:27):
on Netflix. That's that's the most I want.
I watch because they are on the television and that's the reason
why I watch. Other than that, Oh I have a big
big does the TV show fan. OK.
Did you watch the first season of Match Me before you were on
the show or have you watched it at all?
(48:48):
So. So, so good.
Good question because I wanted to know what I was up against.
Yeah, bye. And the name of the show.
So I think, hey, OK, let me go and do some research.
And by now, what do you feel about the first round of the
first round of like contestants and all that Surprise, it goes
(49:19):
rage. The whole that was rage, not
like I got sending a bunch out like Louisville American to
Singapore and I have to match them and I was like no, no, no,
no, no, no, no, all night not I don't.
I like no, no, no, no, it's likeno, no, no, no and changed.
(49:42):
So I was like, OK, because I think the for sure there was
not. It wasn't really very so much.
Everyone was the only star of the show.
Everybody was so invested in heroin because heroin was
genuine. Like she really had a story to
care and it's a real person. Like he really, really looking
for love. And the whole American felt
(50:03):
that. So that was the only thing I
took away from the show on the first part, the first season.
Error, he was so outstanding. Yeah, he made impression.
Well, he was filming at the sametime as Sarah.
Did you? Did you have an opportunity to
meet up with him after the show? After the show, No, we didn't
get to meet up after the show, but you just had like lunch
(50:27):
together. It was just a very short 1.
Oh, so you did get to meet Harold?
That's quite short time. Oh, that's so sweet.
Obviously, we love Harold. We do, Harold.
Is the best. Is he the same in person as he
is on TV? Yep. 100 is he as genuine as you
(50:51):
are? Sorry.
Yeah, he's as genuine as you areon TV. 100 percent, 100%, Very
nice, very down to earth. He's just he's, he's been one of
my favorite reality TV show stars since the second that he
came across. Surprisingly came across my TV
(51:12):
because of like, what is the show?
I think I started watching it last year when I was in BC
actually. And I was, I messaged you
immediately B And I was like, have you seen this show?
I'm pretty sure I told you to watch the show, Amy.
And he just, he seemed so incredibly sweet.
(51:36):
Anyway, sorry the show is about you, not about Harold.
Back to you. So how has your life changed
since the show has aired? I think the club, it's not so
much great Singapore, like we don't have PLC in Singapore and
there's no major channels holding the show.
(51:57):
So they've changed so much. But I do get more followers that
are from that. Add me on Instagram. 1 funny. 1
fan came up to me. One fan came up to me when I was
having my lunch. 1 fan and I'm like, I was like, OK, what the
(52:21):
name of The thing is like no, I watch your show.
You were great. And I was like like me don't go
ahead. And he was like Oh my God.
So there was like, I don't see that much because I don't think
a lot of Singaporeans actually watch it so much.
(52:44):
And yeah, the people who my friends, my client, you know, a
friend of a friend of my client's friends and people who
are erected and over to dad, I realized a lot of people, kind
of like a lot of people actuallybefore the 90 Day Fiance, they
(53:06):
actually watch matched me a lot. They actually do always match me
a lot. Surprise.
So it was like quite interesting.
So you have a number, but it's not a big number.
You have a number of people watching Make me a Go.
You do have it, you know. Thank you so much, EJ, for
taking the time to, to talk to us today.
It's been absolutely phenomenal getting to know you and to like,
(53:29):
it's so exciting to be able to ask you all of our questions.
So I can't thank you enough. Yeah.
Thank you, EJ for taking the time today.
We love so much to get a little bit of inside knowledge,
especially when it turns out that, like we mentioned a couple
of times before, the reality of the show is in fact how it
actually went down. We so enjoyed you on this season
(53:52):
which was a fantastic season of Match Me Abroad and we wish.
My best. We we look forward to reading
your book and we we wish you a continued success in
bodybuilding all of the things that you are currently up to.
I am also looking forward to thebook and for the one week of
free training. Thank you.
(54:14):
Thank you for asking me, guys. Thank you for asking me.
It was my pleasure talking aboutthe show, talking about my
emotions, talking about my feelings, how to go.
It remain a lot of big memories of how I was going through the
show. And yeah, I mean, hey, but it's
(54:35):
to buy love, finding love in ourown way, which is great.
So thanks for the show man, guys, I really appreciate it.
