Queen of Dance Hall from Jamaica, but here in Atlanta, we are excited
(00:44):
to have you here. You've beenliving here for a little bit, by
the way, I've been living inJamaica, and okay, I'm not claiming
Atlanta as my home. Get ittwisted, okay, but you're here in
Atlanta a lot though I am.I here a lot. I think that's
where people get it confused, becauseend of the day, you and I
work here because of love and hiphop Atlanta and fortunate we film for like
ten months sometimes so most of thetimes I have to be here because I
(01:07):
love hip love on hip hop Atlanta. Okay, I get it. I
get it. So we're not goingto claim you even though we want to
claim you here. Okay. SoI have to ask while you're here in
town, where is the best placeto get Jamaican food? Because I'm Jamaican
myself, and I like my houseJamaica. Yes, in the house.
I'm happy to have you here,So you let me know where you think
(01:27):
the best Jamaican food is here inAtlanta. Would I definitely say restaurant like
Tastey Spool, Okay, and bigup to Ramona because when I go to
Taste Spool, my Filama Dad Yad, my filam Dad Jamaka of food,
well cooked, getting nice fleavac somebodydam around there, No no know where
them get them seasoned from. It'snot cooking, But I love Tasty Spool
here in Atlanta, Okay, comparedto your cooking? Where do they stand?
(01:49):
Because we know you can cook well, separate from my cooking, cause
my cooking is the best. Okay, we know that you are here shooting
for love and hip hop. We'lltalk about that little late, but like
I said, we're talking about talkingto the queen of dance hall making hits
for so many years. So thankyou five years. Can you believe it?
Yeah? How does it feel knowingthat you've been in the business for
(02:12):
so long and stelf thriving and doingamazing things. I'm related to be honest,
I'm just so gleeful over the factthat I'm looking back at twenty five
years. I started in nineteen ninetynine, and no, I'm not old.
I just started when I was young. So I've been chasing my dreams
ever since i was a teenager. And for me, just looking back right
now, I'm just so gleeful becauseI'm like, wow, looking back at
(02:34):
all the things that I managed toovercome as a black woman coming on at
jamikam, making it big internationally. It's not no smileting. It's a very
big ding. So let's talk aboutit. And I'm just so excited because
I called my album that I'm celebratingMirror twenty five because right now I'm just
kind of reflecting and looking back.So when I look in the mirror,
I'm like, wow, twenty fiveyears, Yes, I did that.
(02:57):
Yeah, so it feels amazing. It does. And we got to give
your flowers because, like you said, been in the game for a very
limitable Okay, whatever, I cangive it, the whole, the seed
to plant more. But we appreciateeverything you've done for our culture, honestly,
So thank you so much for yourinfluence in the business. And you're
talking about twenty five years married twentyfive let's talk about this album really quick.
(03:20):
What can we expect from this upcomingalbum? Any cool features or what's
what's to come? Well, Ido have cool features, okay, And
when I think about features, thatgotta you know, definitely thank Bust Rhymes
for jumping on a future with me, the iconic legend himself, the boss
Man, the boss of all bosses. You know that I'm saying. When
(03:43):
he sent me back his verse,I remember just running around the house,
I said, and I must bea bland And you know what I'm saying
the song with Buster Rhymes and Iround round. I'm excited because I feel
like he heard what I heard whenI got the Him track. Shout out
to the composer Karen Young who builtthe beat, and big up to like
(04:04):
Red Bomb super Mix who mix itan Ireland studio. But when I got
the beat, it was so uniqueand so different. I was like,
who is going to bring that uniquedifferent sounded style because it's giving me a
little bit of dances give me likea mad crazy vibe and I'm like,
yeah, it just begs me wantto dance. And Buster Rhimes was the
(04:25):
first person and the only person thatcame to mind because he's just so different,
so unique, so tally like,he's just, you know what I'm
saying, iconic And when I sentit to him, you know, with
my parts on it, and hewas like, bosslet it is fun this
wicked. You know. I don'tthink I have words to explain how related
like that feeling is to have aicon and a legend like Buster Rhymes loving
(04:48):
something that you're doing and wanting tobe a part of it. But he's
always pushing the Jamaican culture, Sowhe the bigger Bust rhymes for that,
because you know, stay pushing theJamaican culture through the world. So coming
together with him now to push iteven further. It's just an amazing feeling
so big up the Buster Rhymes, the boss man. Yes, let's talk
about that actual collaboration. What wasit like truly working with him to produce
(05:10):
this track? Too easy? OhI love it, too unbelievable easy because
when you talk about a legend likeBuster Rhymes and you're thinking like, oh
my god, how am I goingto able to even finance this, and
when you have it so easy wherehe's just so humble, just so comforting,
boss lady, I got you. What do you need? You know,
(05:33):
I had to get clearance obviously, and he was like, you know,
send the email. Because I'm anindependent artist, so I'm doing everything
independent to the in house by myself. I'm a lady with many hats on
my own record label, my ownmanager. I don't have no body beid
by myself. And he was justHe's like him, just rule out the
red cap and say get the Clarencehere. And I'm like, boss,
(05:54):
I want to shoot a video.I got you? Like how like somebody
pinch me? It's so easy withsuch a big legend like bust the Rhyme.
He made it so easy for meand I will forever be just humble
and grateful for the experience of justworking with him, shooting the video,
going to New York, him puttingme on to the people who shot the
(06:15):
video. Big up to Surgei,Sergio and his entire team. Everybody was
just so easy to work with, comforting. I flew into New York and
I remember doing the video. I'mlike that Jesus can't afford bust the rhymes.
I wonder what it's gonna take. And when I reached out to him,
he's like, your mad boss, lady, you make a be it
(06:36):
for not I'm not wait what that'sa blessing? Oh so this track with
Buster Rhymes is just a blessing. It is, yes, and it's a
great track. So thank you runRound. That's where the whole lay to
(06:57):
it as well, which is fine. That's what I love because it's so
different. Yeah, it's so different. It's a good one. Okay,
now you're talking about the album. You're talking about Buster Rhymes is gonna be
on it? What other features anyother Jamaican artists and see us cephalon done
Kingdom? Like, who do wehave any possibilities there? Or do you
have possibilities. Okay. However,I'm not sure when this interview is coming
(07:17):
out, so I gotta be tightlipped about like the other features. So
I do have Jamaican features, okayon this album. Okay, looking at
her like okay, that's okay. We're looking forward to the album and we
can't wait for that to come out. So when is that one coming out?
(07:38):
By the way, the album iscoming out this summer? Okay,
I'm looking for maybe August. Youknow it's completed. It's finished right now.
We just dabbling and releasing songs andwatching what people love and enjoy.
So it's just for me to selecta date. But I know it's ready.
Okay. That's exciting. We arehaving our fingers crossed to just have
(07:58):
it really flourish and each all partsof the world. So we're excited for
that one. And you're talking aboutwhat people love, and I've been seeing
on social media people have been aloving twenty eighty five tig Right now,
me mind my business and business withnobody business. I love it. It's
Grandma Spice working for me every singletime on the video. It's so much
(08:20):
fun. It's like a fun videoto make. It was a fun video
to make, However, it wasI don't think it's a fun song to
release because I seem to have touchedon a lot of corn. I don't
know how one coup of Team Bonneup so much people, but it seems
to have you know, and letme drink it too hot. I don't
know what's going on. You knowwhat's the funny part about this song.
(08:43):
It was hard for me to writethis song because it's really me spilling my
personal tea on myself, talking aboutmy business, talking about things that I've
managed to overcome. Earlier in thisinterview, I told you that my album
is called Mirror twenty five because I'm, you know, looking in the mirror
and kind of reflecting, and youknow, I am. I have been
through hurt and pain and betrayal fromfriends who slept with my man and all
(09:05):
of that. I've been through. It it's my you know, own business
or own feelings that I'm telling youthis is what I've been through. So
unfortunately, my own hurt and feelings, I've probably hurt a lot of people
without them realizing that they are theones that hurt me. That's what makes
it even more difficult to live throughand it's been stirring up some controversy social
(09:28):
media. So I had to breakit down. I'll be doing my job
if I didn't ask some questions.Let's talk about it. You mentioned some
of my sleeping with your man.How did you find that out? Well,
funny enough, it happened more thanonce, but the particular one that's
on the internet that was taken upby the person that came out and start
(09:50):
talking about it. She wasn't theonly person. But since she is the
one that came out to talk abouther situation, you know, you're just
show your contin of a colony,am I? She take it up on
say okay, this belongs to me, so she's the popular one. I'll
explain that situation. But there's morethan one situation where that happened. However,
this particular person she used to workfor me, And funny enough,
(10:11):
how I found out was the manthat started talking that you know, he
slept with her, and then himtalking about it. That's all I ended
up hearing, how did you Becausewe were breaking up and he was trying
to hurt me, like, ohI did this to her friend and whatever,
and that's how I heard. Yeah, that's sad, that's really sacond
here. I'm so sorry. Andthat was someone that I really loved,
(10:33):
you know, the person, thegirl that was involved in the situation.
I cared about them, loved themlike genuinely, like a sister would have
given them at all. And soit's hard to be talking about someone who
hurts you, but you know thenin return, they're making it seems like
you're hurting them by talking about yourpain. But what I want people to
understand also is that you know,an author would write a book of things
(10:58):
that I'm an artist, I haveto put it in my music. And
that's just where what it is.And it's very it's very authentic, it's
very raw. You're putting it allout there. And there's another part to
that song where I was like aquestion, maybe should have hicked a better
dad for the kids? You saidit not me? Why did Okay?
(11:18):
If you can like do it againor if you had to pick, now,
what kind of man I guess youwould want for your kids versus what
you have. I think I wouldwant a man that is a more father
figure to my kids. You know, my son, he's seventeen years old
now, and sometimes I look andI wonder if he knows everything that he
(11:39):
should know as a man, because, let's be honest, as women,
there's so much that you can give, but you don't know the intricate spart
about teaching a man to be aman. A man would probably know that.
So sometimes when I look at myson, I'm like, did I
teach him anything? Did I remembereverything? You know? You teach him
the things that you would like asa woman, like you open the door
(12:01):
for a lady. You do this, you do this, says a man.
You're responsible for this, this isyour job or whatever. But I
feel like it would be better comingfrom a male figure like his father,
and so just not being there forthe kids alone, you know, those
who were my words. I'm sorrymy kids didn't get a better dad,
because at the end of the day, it's not just about financial gain,
because my kid's father are not therefor my kids financially. And thank God
(12:22):
that I'm blessed enough as a motherto be able to take that role on
and I've done everything for them financiallysince their birth. But come on,
that's not just the only thing thata child needs, right right, They
need that second parent or a malefigure to be able to help and train.
Every youth needs a father. Yes, that's the truth. That's the
truth. And you know you're speakingpowerful words and you're speaking the truth as
well, and just talking about that, there's always that conversation of like,
(12:46):
you know, the man and hisrole in the relationship. So and just
to elaborate, and I don't meanto cut you, I just said every
youth need their father, but alsothose girls need their father as well.
I remember my father who is thereason I'm in music, May so rest
in peace. He died when Iwas nine years old, but I feel
like him not being there or havingAnd I have a brother as well that
I have a weird relationship with whereI don't speak to as much because of
(13:11):
his alcohol problem. But I feellike when you don't have that male figure,
then you have to also take onthat masculine energy to be the man
in your own space, you knowwhat I'm saying. So I feel like
my daughter also needed that person tofeel secure to say, you know,
my father is here. It's noteasy for you to take on the role
(13:33):
to really support them in the waythey need when they don't have that male
figure. So you're doing an amazingjob. Thank you. So let's talk
about you know, just the manin the in the picture, if there
is a man in the picture, there is not Okay, Okay, I
had to ask. So in yournext person that you want to be with,
you know, what qualities are youlooking for for him to really I
guess fit the vision that you haveAfter going through life experiences, I feel
(13:56):
like I need a man that isled by God, someone that strongly believes
in God as God fearing. Ineed a man that is that has a
great personality, someone that is someonethat is dominant, someone that is not
easily feeling like, what's the wordintimidated by my success because I feel like
(14:22):
oftentimes in my relationship because of whoI am, men get intimidated by what
I have And that's just the plaintruth. So I need someone who is
not egotistical, that's just a strongfigure. And I feel like a man
that is able to bring comfort sothat I can find that comfort in you,
to trust you enough to let gooff of my masculine energy and just
(14:46):
feel comfortably enough to go into myfeminine energy, not just listen to your
words to say, oh I gotyou, but for me to feel like
it's okay for me to let goand just fall back because I have someone
that I can trust. Those arevery important qualities that somebody really should have.
So you're not asking, in myopinion, too much. I'm not
okay. I'm not asking for alot, not at all. And there's
this whole conversation right now actually aboutit was brought up again with some other
(15:09):
celebrities or influencers about the fact ofthe man. You know, I don't
want to date a man who doesn'thave at least the same amount of money
as I have, or at leastmore to provide for my family, provide
for me. What are your thoughtson dating somebody who makes less than you?
You know? Am. Before Isay what my thoughts are, I
(15:30):
also want to just make it beclear that I have dated people who have
less than me. So because I'vedated people who have less than me before,
I now can say I would neverdate again someone who has less than
me, because then it comes withthem being egotistical, like I said before,
where they feel insecure because of whatI have. So they come into
my life and they see my bighouse or they see my car, they
(15:50):
see I'm able to walk in astore and spend you know, one hundred
thousand at a time, So thatmakes them feel like, you know,
into me dated. So I nowknow that I'm not able to date someone
who has less than me because I'mnot able to finesse your ego or to
dim down myself to make you feellike a man. So because I've been
(16:12):
there, now I know that I'mnot able to date someone who has less
than me because I've done it beforeand it doesn't work out. It's always,
you know, them feeling less thana man, and I can't make
you feel like a man making mymoney making. I get it. I
get it. Once again, you'renot asking for too much, in my
(16:33):
opinion, so I'm here for that. And you're speaking on this song,
of course, branching out other conversations, but just tying back to the song
here. We also spoke about,uh, you know some people love and
hip hop, you know, callingthem a little cap And I listened to
everyone and I look up the lyrics. That's my job, So I want
to know all the details. Whoare Who's whose cap? That's it?
(16:56):
Who's cap on loving hip hop?Atlanta? And why a lot of them
because because they're cats, because they'refake. Okay, they're not real.
Let me ask it this way then, filming the show, who are you
the closest to? Do you haveany people that you really bond with on
the show? I do, Okay. I think I'm closer to Chicano Okay,
(17:19):
and definitely and Rashida. Okay, everybody else is everybody else is not
just you know what I'm saying. You said, Well, I'm closer to
I would definitely like call Rashida ifI have a problem or something, and
definitely Chicano would probably be the firstone that I call. Those are the
people that I'm closer to. Butit doesn't mean that I'm not friends with
(17:41):
like Sierra, and it doesn't meanI'm not friends with like you know,
other cast members. Rennie Ruccie.I love her to pieces. She's pregnant
now, by the way, congratulations, I love you as the godmother.
But I'm not calling her every singleday. That's there. I know she's
going through her you know, soI check up on her. Okay,
(18:03):
how the baby? You know whatI'm saying. All the day. But
Chakaina is on my phone every day. She's calling me three am, and
I'm like, why are you callingme at three am? I love at
least you have a good relationship withthat person. Okay, So if somebody
that you did not like called youat three am, who was that person
and why are you blocking them?I just want to know who who's on
(18:25):
the bottom of the list, youknow, because they have my favorites from
the cast. I want to knowabout the cast who I'm not going to
answer at three am. He mightblock them, I don't know, just
out okay, chat. I mean, if we had some tea in here,
I'll get her for you. Misstwenty eighty five t. I don't
think there's a cast that I,you know, will block. But I
(18:51):
know I won't take a call fromlike a Carly at three am because I
used to. I gave her thatopportunity where she could call me at three
am. But I won't give youthe opportunity again. So I wouldn't take
a call from her at three am. Because child, you used to be
able to call me at three am, You've lost that opportunity. It wouldn't
be able to reconcile at all.Or you're just we're friends, We're cool,
(19:12):
not friends, but you know,we have a problem. You said,
who I wouldn't want to take acall from at three am? Okay,
that's fair. But because I usedto take her calls at three am
and listen to all the sins, this that we're not like that anymore,
So that's fair political she's answering myquestions politically correct. I just want to
put that out there, but we'lltake it, okay. So I do
(19:32):
have a question though, because youhave established yourself in the music industry,
Queena Dance, we know this forso long, why did you decide to
get involved with love and hip hop? Because typically people would do that to
help elevate their status, but youdidn't really need to do that. You
know a lot of people say Ididn't need love and hip hop, and
a lot even now they're like,oh, I don't understand why this Grammy
nominated artist is on love and hiphop. You're bigger than the brand,
(19:53):
or you're bigger than the show,or you shouldn't be doing this on the
show. And Okay, I hearall of that, and I do see
the comments. But at the endof the day, I think people need
to also realize that Danceaull has roomfor growth. I remember coming on Love
and hip Hop and they never usedto say Spice the Queen of Danceall.
They used to say Spice from Loveand hip Hop because that's where most people
know me from here in America. It's the sad truth. But there's people
(20:15):
who when I went on the show, they actually didn't know who I was.
And that's just the truth. Sowhile the world outside of Love and
Hip Hop knows me as the Queenof Dan Sall and I go on tour
in Europe, I just came fromParis. I'm always traveling and touring,
there's still spaces where people did notknow who I was when I got onto
Love and Hip Hop. And lookat you now and look at me now,
(20:37):
flourishing and growing, and we're herefor that. So I'm happy that
you are bringing more eyes to theculture, to the music and doing it
gracefully. So we thank you forthat one and no fantastic by the way,
But we want to just get intoyou mentioned the touring, so we
know we had this new album comingout. Anything we can expect soon as
(21:00):
far as a tour, oh,I am definitely going on tour with this
album. Mar twenty five, soyou can look out for Mara twenty five
tour come into a place near you. Yes, absolutely, Okay, Okay,
when can we hear more about it? Though? I just want to
know when I feel like I'm goingto start releasing the dates in August?
Okay, Okay, that's exciting, all right. So we know that you're
working and you're putting this out.As far as music is concerned, you
(21:23):
filmed for Love and Hip Hop thatseason's coming out. But what else are
you working on this year? Youknow? I just released a book called
The Navigational Business Planner. Sometimes Igo into business mode because I want to
remind my best is that it's importantto set up multiple streams of income so
that you can make it to thetop. A lot of people feel like
they can save their way to thetop. This financial this book that I
(21:45):
have, it teaches you financial literacy. It teaches you self healing because I'm
also on a journey of self reflectingand self healing and taking time for yourself.
So it has so many multiple pagesthat teaches you the different aspect of
your life, and it just plansout your entire year for you. Teaches
you how to be organized, topay your bills on you know what I'm
saying. So this book that Ihave that is called the Navigational Business Planner,
(22:10):
it literally just navigates your entire year. It's like me saying, here's
why I'm successful. Here's a book, this is what I did to be
able to reach where I'm at.That's available on my website at spice official
dot com. And I feel likeeveryone man and woman should have that planner.
Yes, yes, you got tohave some kind of structure organization when
(22:32):
it comes to big deals and finances. And like you said, budgeting makes
a difference. Talk about how havingthe knowledge that you have from over the
years, how that has really influencedyour business, your career and into other
adventures. So I have had businessbefore, multiple business from restaurants to clothing
store. I remember starting my clothingbrand with a store in Jamaica called Spicycatur
(22:56):
that was on mod Plaza. ThenI branched off in Maypain, Then I
branched off in Mandiful, in MontagaBay, multiple places across Jamaica. I
started my little franchise, but thenCOVID hit and I had to go online,
so I rebrand and called changed thename to grassenor, which is what
I'm wearing right now. And Ifeel like over the years being a businesswoman,
you have learned. So I havelearned so much because I always want
(23:18):
to remind people that losses are lessons. So while I have had business that
have failed, I've learned from allthe mistakes that I've made. So I'm
so knowledgeable now that I'm able tolook at you and I can tell you
what it takes to start up arestaurant from scratch to top a clothing store
because I've done it before. I'velived the life, you know what I'm
saying. So I am so informativewhen it comes on to those type of
(23:41):
businesses because I've done them. I'ma multiple you know. I've been doing
business since I was a child inschool was a business. I love it.
I love it. Been doing it, like I said, for so
long, so long. So ifyou can give one piece of advice of
business and being successful, what wouldthat be. If I could give you
one advice for businesses for business andbeing successful, I would say, you
(24:07):
cannot save your way to the top. I feel like that is one of
the cliche that they sell to us, that dream that caused us to be
in a cycle where your mom ispoor, you come poor, your kids
come poor, and you keep goingin a circle because they teach us to
get a saving pen and save thosesilvers and keep saving. But you cannot
save your way to a millionaire. You got to set up multiple streams of
(24:29):
income in order to generate wealth. And are you going to do any more
streams of income or do you feellike you have enough on your plate or
what's the plan for you? Oh, it's never enough to have enough streams
of income. You know, everytime I make a big money I buy
a house. I love that.Actually, someone in real estate support.
You know what I'm saying. Youknow, I believe in multiple streams of
(24:52):
income. I just know that that'sthe only way to save to make it
to wealth, because we just keepsaving, saving and using that money over
and over and then you feel likea failure because you can't save your way
to wealth. Yeah, it doesn'tdo anything in the bank. You gotta
put it to work. You gottalet your money make money for you.
Yes, I love it. Ilove it. So you're doing all this.
The business is flourishing, The musicis flourishing. New album Love and
(25:15):
Hip Hop. What are you goingto do for yourself? What do you
rest this summer? Any trips orI'm not going to rest this summer because
my album drops this summer, soI'm going to work this summer. I'm
also going to be working throughout mybirthday because unfortunately my birthday falls right in
the middle of summer, which isAugust six, which is also my country's
Independence Day. But after the summer, after August, I'm planning to have
(25:40):
a well rested vacation. That's goingto be my treat. You should just
go somewhere and turn my phone off, not for long, because I'm addicted
to find out. Let me seewhat y'all saying. Not right, I'm
watching speaking a little bit, butyou deserve that. I always plan a
little me time, you know,as you should. Okay, are you
coming back for Love and app foranother season after the season that airs?
(26:00):
Actually, I am actually already filmingfor Love and Hip Hop, And what
I can say is that I'm theexecutive producer for the Love and Hip Hop
Atlanta Cast album. We're doing analbum for the very first time, and
