Gaming has a reputation as a hardcore and extremely competitive hobby. Leaderboards and high scores have always been a part of the industry, after all. Competitive gaming is big in the community right now. eSports tournaments are broadcast the world over, and new players join League of Legends and Counter-Strike 2 every day.
What Defines a Casual Game?
Casual games are titles that take focus away from competition or experience farming. They focus on nurturing a calm atmosphere and casual vibes. The games are often lumped in the cozy category because they focus on rest. But don’t conflate calmness with simplicity. Cozy games can be quite challenging to navigate and excel at. But what makes them comfy is that there is no pressure to succeed.
A lot of the popular cozy games are available on mobile. The era of smartphones has made it so most gamers are switching from high-powered consoles to their pocket computers. For those who prefer casual play, tons of simple puzzle games or simulators might be just what you need.
Why are Casual Games Soaring in Popularity?
We can understand what a casual game is. But why are these titles soaring in popularity? Comfy and cozy games have always been around. Simulators of all kinds have existed since the dawn of gaming. But it wasn’t until recently that the “comfy” category became a thing on Steam and similar game stores. What changed in the past decade or two?
After handling all the daily challenges of a fast-paced culture, many gamers come home tired of it all. At that moment, they would rather not take on high-skilled players in multiplayer games, or combat a challenging final boss in some action-oriented adventure. Most of all, they would love to relax in their lovely house built from scratch in Animal Crossing. The future is uncertain even for top-shelf celebrities right now. That is why many gamers prefer not to think about said future and just escape to a comforting story and a peaceful atmosphere.
The Triumph of Comfort Games
The success of comfy games has shown game development studios that there is a broader market to explore. Video games are usually associated with violent and combat-oriented game mechanics. Games like Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley prove this simple fact. We may see a future where this game style grows even more popular and attracts a much larger crowd.
But it would be wrong to say that comfort games are always combat-free. Hollow Knight is a comfy game. The soothing music and dark colors make up for a gorgeous atmosphere. It makes one imagine oneself lying under a starlit night in the countryside. That serenity that comes from playing Hollow Knight is not any lessened by the game’s combat system or difficulty level. Hollow Knight and its recently released sequel remain staples of the “comfy” genre.
Game studios are certainly looking for ways to improve on the cozy game boom. One big way they do that is by implementing social connectivity. Multiplayer features have boosted the popularity of games like Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing.
