Meta's Betrayal: China, Censorship, and User Data

A former Meta (Facebook) executive, Sarah Win Williams, testified before a US Senate committee, alleging that during her tenure as Director of Global Public Policy from 2011 to 2017, the company repeatedly prioritized its relationship with the Chinese Communist Party and its goal of entering the Chinese market over US national security and American values. Williams claimed Meta collaborated with China to develop censorship tools, suppress dissidents' accounts, and considered providing the Chinese government access to user data, including that of Americans, all while misleading employees, shareholders, Congress, and the public. She further accused Meta of sharing sensitive technologies like AI with China to help them compete with American companies and detailed instances of Meta's pursuit of profit over user safety, particularly concerning children. Facing legal action and a gag order from Meta, Williams presented internal documents as evidence of these activities and called for accountability.
