Dr. Debra J. Barksdale is Dean and Professor of the School of Nursing at UNC Greensboro. Dr. Barksdale is an RWJF Executive Nurse Fellow alumna and served as the only nurse appointed to the Patient-Centered Outcomes Board of Governors (PCORI) for 8 years, a past president of the National Association of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, an AACN-Wharton Executive Leadership Fellow, and a former DHHS Primary Health Care Policy Fellow and a Translational Research Fellow at the L. Douglas School of Government at VCU. She currently serves as the National League for Nursing representative to the Diversifying the Nursing Workforce Initiative which is coordinated by AARP. Dr. Barksdale recently completed her second term as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Nursing where she also served as the board liaison to the Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity Committee and several expert panels. She holds degrees from the University of Virginia (BSN), Howard University (MSN-FNP), University of Michigan (PhD), and a post-master’s certificate in teaching (University of Pennsylvania). She is a recognized leader in the area of advanced practice nursing education and in equity, diversity, and inclusion.
