Speaker 1 (00:00):
Do you have yours
Welcome back listeners to a very
special episode of a HeroesWelcome podcast.
We are continuing our littleseries on talking about the SIP
conference happening in LasCruces, hosted by yours truly
this October, and, liliana, youhave said yes not to just one
(00:23):
but two workshops for thisconference.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
As a high
overachiever.
I'm thinking why, but then toolate, because I already
submitted both of them.
And here we go, people, You'regoing to see me twice.
That's right, you're welcome,thank you.
So I am going to be hosting twopresenting on two sessions.
One will be beyond borders, soobviously I'm going to be
(00:51):
talking about what to cook forThanksgiving Now he's kidding.
I'm going to be talking aboutculturally and ethically
responding in our field ofmental health, but also I'm
going to be talking aboutsupervision.
So if you've been following me,you know that Maddie and I do
(01:11):
talk a lot about supervision andethics.
So my session will besupervising with caution, since
we're focusing on core cases.
I'm going to be talking aboutall the scary things that could
happen in our field astherapists and the things that
we have to be paying attentionto as supervisors.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
I just realized we're
just going to be celebrating
spooky season a little bit earlywith all the scaries.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
That's it.
We're prepping you forHalloween.
You are welcome.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
That's right, that's
right.
So anyone who's listened orknows you, like we, you can be
kind of seen as, like I know, you're my go to person for
things like culturally based andsupervision based.
With your experience, whatmight be something that they're
going to learn from you?
If they haven't yet met you orsat in any of your sessions
(02:03):
before, what could they lookforward to?
Speaker 2 (02:07):
I was going to say
like that, I'm insane and I'm
not rude.
Yes, yes, no, I truly careabout ethics.
As a type A Virgo introvertperson, my self-care is actually
reading person, my self-care isactually reading.
And in regards to mental health, since I joined in and this is
(02:33):
my second career it has alwaysbeen how can I do this ethically
and what does that mean, especially as a migrant, having
a different lens, that I seeeverything that I do.
So from the first session thatI'm talking about cultural
humility, the invitation, andsomething that you may not know
is the language that I use, because when we go to other
trainings, we tend to focus alot on stereotypes.
We tend to focus a lot of.
(02:54):
These are the things that you'renot do almost in a checklist,
and then, when you come to mysessions, it's like so what am I
supposed to do?
Because I have no checklist, and part of it is because of the
language, the dialogue and thelife experience that I bring in
into those sessions.
And then, as a supervisor, Ithink we've been discussing with
other colleagues.
As an MFT and Maria joins me inthis our journey to become
(03:19):
supervisors is lengthy, to saythe least.
To say the least, and as asupervisor in different models,
not just in plate therapy, Itend to go to classes of
supervision.
So therefore, I get toexperience supervision through
different lenses and that givesme a unique approach, because
it's not black and white, it'snot.
(03:40):
This is how we do it in platetherapy only.
This is not how we do itthrough licensure only, it's
like I don't know, let's figurethis shit together.
So it's just different the waythat I see supervision, but all
of those through a cultural andethical lens.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
I love that and fun
fact I'm going to share about
you that you don't know.
I'm going to say this out loudLiliana reads codes of ethics
for fun and that's not, ironically like legitimately for
fun and that's not I, notironically, like legitimately
for fun I.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
It's funny because
when people become that aware
about that folder in my computerand how, like hold on, let me
check um, and people go likewait, you read?
I was like yes, you know howexcited it is as an mft, our
code of ethics is being revised.
When I got the the email to saydid you want to complete this
survey and give us feedback onthe revision of ethics, I was
(04:33):
like yes, please Did you?
Speaker 1 (04:35):
just upload an
updated version of the code of
ethics that you would like tosee.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
I downloaded it.
I read it.
Let me give you feedback on thelanguage change.
That was like my jam thatweekend.
So yeah, actually I do readthat, for maybe I need something
fun to do, but that's my funthing that is your fun thing.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
That is your fun,
which I think is why it gives
you such authority to talk aboutit, because you're not
prescribing to just one code ofethics.
You really do research and lookat all codes of ethics.
You live and breathe the codesof ethics, and I think that it's
formidable for you to do thatand then turn around and
translate it to the rest of uswho don't read those for funsies
(05:16):
, so that we can bewell-informed and feel supported
and feel grounded in what we'repracticing.
And both of those right Cultureand ethics are those two pieces
of our practice that areconstantly evolving and changing
and that we need to stay up todate.
But we also need to feel reallysafe in doing those things.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Yeah, and knowing
right, like the knowing part,
that helps our anxiety when wehave those ethical cases which
we go into panic of what do I do?
Versus like, hold on, I have aguide of what to do and then we
can move to other stuff.
So, yeah, I think they're veryhelpful.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
I love that and I'm I
mean, I am, I'm blessed because
I get a lot of access to you.
But I'm very excited for you tocome to Las Cruces and for
everyone here to get to hang outwith you for a couple of days.
So you know side notes ifyou're coming.
Liliana enjoys tacos.
Coffee is a love language forher.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Coffee.
I need coffee before I talk toyou.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
Yeah, we're so
excited that you're coming.
I mean, I get to geek out andlike hang out with you and some
of the some of my favoritepeople for a couple of days, but
