Hey Friend!

We throw around words like they're interchangeable when they're not—and the difference matters. Weather vs. climate. Listening vs. hearing. Motion vs. progress. In leadership, we do this with self-awareness and emotional intelligence, treating them like synonyms when they're actually two distinct capabilities. I learned this the hard way as a young lieutenant walking into a room full of colonels and generals during a communication outage, knowing my triggers but needing to apply that knowledge under intense pressure. Self-awareness gave me the foundation, but emotional intelligence changed the outcome.

💬 "Self-awareness is knowing. Emotional intelligence is leading. Leaders need both."

Want to Go Deeper?

Ready to build both your self-awareness foundation AND your emotional intelligence application? Let's uncover your blind spots, map your clarity, and see how blending both can transform your leadership presence and decision-making confidence.

🔑 Key Takeaways:
  • Self-awareness is the foundation - knowing your strengths, blind spots, and triggers, but it's just step one, not the destination
  • Emotional intelligence is the application - using that self-awareness to regulate, communicate, empathize, and connect with others
  • Without emotional intelligence, awareness becomes self-absorption - knowing yourself without applying it wisely can make you seem arrogant or unapproachable
  • Together they create sustainable leadership presence - people know what to expect from you because you can respond strategically instead of reactively
  • Your customers/team don't remember the glitch, they remember how you recovered - it's not what happens, it's how you handle it that builds trust
✨ The One Thing You Don't Want to Miss:

➡️ There's a gap between knowing your triggers and being able to regulate them under pressure. Self-awareness without emotional intelligence is like having a foundation without building the house. You need both the inner clarity AND the ability to translate that into confident, strategic leadership presence.

💪 Challenge if you choose to accept it:

This week, notice if you stop at awareness ("I was triggered by this") or if you apply it through emotional intelligence ("Now I'll use this knowledge to respond differently"). Don't just understand your patterns—use them strategically.

📝 Journal Prompt for Reflection:

"Am I using my self-awareness to build stronger boundaries and say no to more things, or am I using it to push myself out of my comfort zone and lead with greater influence?"

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist

CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist

It’s 1996 in rural North Carolina, and an oddball crew makes history when they pull off America’s third largest cash heist. But it’s all downhill from there. Join host Johnny Knoxville as he unspools a wild and woolly tale about a group of regular ‘ol folks who risked it all for a chance at a better life. CrimeLess: Hillbilly Heist answers the question: what would you do with 17.3 million dollars? The answer includes diamond rings, mansions, velvet Elvis paintings, plus a run for the border, murder-for-hire-plots, and FBI busts.
