Steve (00:02):
Hello, returning Happies and new listeners, this is Steve
Bennett Martin,

Stephen (00:06):
and this is Stephen Martin Bennett, and welcome to A

Steve (00:09):
Lifetime of Happiness, the podcast where we take you on
our journey through some of themovies, shows, and other bits of
pop culture that are helping tokeep us happy while hopefully
bringing a smile to your facealong the way.

Stephen (00:18):
And today, we're catching up on some of the more
recent seasons of our favoriteshows.
Yellow Jackets, How I Met YourFather.
And

Steve (00:26):
we're also talking about the movie Meg, too.
Yes, we are.
Yes, but But first What's beenmaking you happy you may love
IRL?
In real life.

Stephen (00:35):
In real life.
Oh my goodness.
I don't know if there's so manythings that have been making me
happy, but I would say thathonestly what it is, is that
there's been A noticeabledecrease in humidity in
Sarasota.
Over the last week or so andit's made it more bearable like

(00:58):
when I walk Remy in the morningI'm like, oh this feels nice
when we walk Remy at night.
It's like, oh, that's goodinstead of it Just feeling muggy
all the time.
Yes.
Fall is coming.
It's

Steve (01:09):
coming.
It's coming.
What is it speaking of?
What's been making you happy?
Well, thank you my love.
Well after watching you do youramazing moon ceremony Circles
each month for a little over ayear now.
I've been inspired to do one ofmy own, but rather than it being
about the moon, having it beabout sex, and my first kind of

(01:32):
trial group of ten people isstarting this week on Saturday
for a month long weekly foursession workshop, and I look
forward to seeing how it goesand what it leads to.
I'm

Stephen (01:45):
so very excited for you, and I know it will be
successful because anything thatyou are passionate about like
this is always successful.
Yes.

Steve (01:55):
Well, you know what's also been very successful on TV?

Stephen (02:00):
Is it cannibalism?
Yeah.

Steve (02:02):
In Yellow Jackets.
Yeah.
Yellow Jackets just had theirsecond season at recently, but
it's a, an American thrillerdrama series on Showtime that
premiered November 14th, 2021and just finished its second
season that started March 26th,2023.

Stephen (02:19):
It asks, what would happen if you threw a bunch of
high school girls and theircoaches into a Lord of the Flies
situation in the Canadianwilderness during the 1990s with
the answer that It's not goinggreat for some of them today,
and at the very least, theyprobably ate some of their
teammates.

Steve (02:36):
Yes, it stars Melanie Linsky and Sophie Nolici as
adult and teenage

Stephen (02:41):
Shauna.
Tani Cyprus and Jasmine SavoyBrown as adult and teenage

Steve (02:46):
Thaisa.
Christina Ricci and SamanthaHanate Hennedy.

Stephen (02:51):
As the adult and teenage Misty

Steve (02:53):
and Juliette Lewis and Sophie Thatcher as the adult and
teenage Nat or Natalie Yeah, among other standouts like
Elijah Wood is Walter in seasontwo, especially

Stephen (03:02):
it loved him.
Oh my goodness First of all, Ithink we need to give a well
deserved Shout out to thecasting people.
Yes in this not only are theyAmazing actresses that are the
stars of this.
But they did such a good jobfinding the young and the adult

(03:27):
that match up.
So while I know that they...

Steve (03:30):
Cast it probably with that in mind as well as part of

Stephen (03:33):
it.
Oh, it's just so impressive.
Like, we love Jasmine SavoyBrown from the Scream series.
And Nat Melanie Linsky's amazingin anything as are Christina
Ricci and Juliette Lewis.
So, seeing some of these otherpeople it's really good.
I personally believe...

(03:55):
So, before I jump ahead intothat, what did you think of
Season 1?
Season

Steve (03:59):
1 set the bar really high going into Season 2.
I feel like it had a stellarsetup.
You know it set the scene prettyquickly with the crash while
also showing how things escalateso many times people are like
Oh, no, you need to give a newshow three episodes or four
episodes until it gets good ButI remember watching the first

(04:20):
episode and being hooked prettymuch right away.
How about you?
Say

Stephen (04:23):
I was more confused during season one and like I so
when I read a recap of it andthen we Watch the

Steve (04:39):
little

Stephen (04:39):
two minute thing.
Yeah, it started making moresense again.
But I remember not connect, likeI really enjoyed it.
Yes.
But I didn't connect with it asmuch.
But then when we watched season2, boom.
Addicted.
I felt season 2 was even better.
Yes,

Steve (04:57):
I agree.
It definitely took thecharacters and introduced some
new ones and fleshed out someside characters in season 1 who
had more of a focus in season 2.
I know that like it almost wassplit up into two halves where,
like, cause the adults, I feellike, It was especially probably
because of the all star castwith the adult women in the the
series that I feel like theseries is about Them today and

(05:18):
then like having flashbacks ofwhat happened more than like a
50 50 split or at least I carealmost more about The adults and
like what's happening, but likeit's interesting to see what
happened in the past and how itall unfolded Like what do you
what do you love more about it?
The the lost in the wildernessor the adults Dealing

Stephen (05:39):
with it today.
So in season one, it wasdefinitely the adults season
two.
I'm more torn because I thinkthat the wilderness was more
interesting in season two, asthings got more dire, more cabin
fever, because it's the middleof winter, there's nowhere to
go.
It's the Canadian wilderness.

(05:59):
If you're not inside, you'refreezing.
Yeah.
So thing like, and you'rerunning out of food.
None of these people.
One of the bigger improvements Ifelt in Season 2 was the further
development of Christina Ricci'scharacter.
Oh yeah.
She didn't feel like Season 1almost felt like, oh, we

(06:21):
shouldn't like her.

Steve (06:23):
But we do because we're gay and we love our villains.

Stephen (06:25):
And we love Christina Ricci, but the way they wrote
her in Season 2, it's like...
Okay, we get it, you love her.
We're helping you out a littlebit.
Here's a more fleshed outversion

Steve (06:35):
of her.
Yes, I feel like both young herand adult her do a great job.
But, I mean, part of it, thefirst season, I feel like what I
was waiting for in TheWilderness is because we knew,
or at least, like, I don't knowwhether we knew for a fact, but
we pretty much all knewcannibalism was going to happen.
So I was like waiting all firstseason for it to happen.
I have to say, you don't have towait too long in season two.

(06:56):
How do you feel they handled thecannibalism?

Stephen (06:59):
So, it's always really strange, but I've always said
you know, I have no desire to bea cannibal, but, crashed
somewhere, someone dies, I wouldprobably eat somebody to stay
alive, and that's what happened, somebody died, they did a

(07:19):
funeral pyre,

Steve (07:24):
It accidentally turned into a barbeque.
Yeah, it was a barbeque.
But they did it in such like abeautiful way, and like with the
visuals and the hallucinatingthat you could tell that they
were like driven almost insaneby hunger.
But I almost feel like it was avery different type of
cannibalism experience than onethat happens later in the
season.
So,

Stephen (07:44):
what do you think?
I mean, obviously, they've eatenthe flesh of a human in Canada.
They need to worry aboutbecoming...
Wendigos.
Wendigos.
We learned that in X Men, yes.
Yes, because if you eat theflesh of another human north of
the U.
S.
border in Canada...
You become a primordial Wendigo,

Steve (08:05):
so science.
Yeah.
Yeah now and also the greatthing about season two is we
finally get all of our Survivorsthat we know of so far.
Yeah all together in theretreat.
What do you think of gettingthis great cast together?

Stephen (08:17):
So that's one of the other amazing things as well.
Like when they had their littlefangs and blah blah blah

Steve (08:26):
They'd interact with each other individually, but they
were never all together.

Stephen (08:29):
And I really like Shauna's husband.
He grew on me a lot as acharacter.
But yeah, they didn't, it's kindof like Arrested Development.
The show's better when all thecast is there together.
And this showed us the samething.
Once they all got to theretreat, it was pure magic.
Yes.

Steve (08:48):
And that magic has been renewed for a season three.
What do you hope?

Stephen (08:53):
So obviously we've seen things in flash forwards of the
past where they start dressingin ceremonial garb with more
animal headdresses and things,so it's going to become very
dark.

(09:14):
And there is going to be morehunting that we know of, and
because we saw at the retreat, where you know, we have to hunt
you, and nature decides, and allthat.
And we see that, that was one ofthe first flash forwards we saw,
in season one, of the girlrunning through the woods and

(09:34):
the other people.
With the torches and stuff andshe fell into a pit.
Yeah.
So, we know it's gonna get a lotworse for them.
I'm really intrigued how far itgoes.
How long do they stay out there?
Cause they've not really...
And

Steve (09:49):
they've hinted that it's years.
When they say things like thefirst winter or the first
summer.
Summer, you're right.
So, it's...
I can't imagine.
I would've given up.
Like, I don't think I could'vesurvived out there for that
long.
Ugh.

Stephen (10:01):
And, I'm interested to see what happens with the...
Older adults come season threebecause the new character that
they brought on well, not a newcharacter, we've seen her as
younger, but this season we gotto see her adult version has

(10:21):
cancer.
Yeah.
So, and you and I both, lesbian, yeah.
You and I both theorize thatwhat

Steve (10:28):
happened, the sacrifice that they did in the woods.
That

Stephen (10:31):
it may be the nature is going to, that

Steve (10:33):
would be interesting.
So it'll be interesting to seewhere it goes.
On the lighter side, you knowwhat show was a lot happier?
And we're a beat

Stephen (10:43):
how, how I met your father there.
I almost said how we met yourmother and I was like, where,
wait, no,

Steve (10:51):
that this is a spinoff of how I met your mother.
It's how I met your father.
It's a Hulu show that had seasonone coming out in 2022 and
season two ending the seriesunfortunately on July 11th,
2023.
It stars Hilary Duff as Sophie,Christopher Lowell as Jesse,
Francia Raisa as Valentina.

Stephen (11:12):
Siraj Sharma as Sid, Tom Ainsley as Charlie, Tien
Tran as Ellen, and Kim Cattrallas future Sophie in 2050.
And it follows Sophie and hergroup of friends in Manhattan,
similar to how How I Met YourMother followed Ted and his
group of friends in Manhattan.
So, yeah, this is bittersweet.

(11:35):
Like, we really enjoyed Season2.
There's not going to be a season

Steve (11:40):
three.
Yes.
But how did it pay homage as aspinoff of a series you love so
deeply?

Stephen (11:45):
It paid really good homage.
We got so the guys were livingin Ted's old apartment.
Yeah.
We got Robin, we got Barney, who's really trying to work on
himself.
Doing his best.
He's doing his best.
It felt true to the spirit ofthe original show.
It was updated.

(12:06):
It made sense.
I really liked

Steve (12:08):
it.
I really did as well.
I know that Season 1 was reallyabout getting to know the
characters, but I feel like ittruly shined in Season 2 once
they all had their relationshipsall set up.

Stephen (12:18):
And I also wonder, did we not get a Season 3?

Steve (12:24):
Oh, we're probably not getting a lot of the new shows
because of the strike.
Yeah.
Because I can't imagine, I mean,Hulu's not known for its killer
TV lineup to begin with.
I can't imagine there wascompetition from original
programming.
Right.
But, what did you think ofSeason 2?

Stephen (12:40):
So, Season 2 was fantastic, because we already
had everybody set up.
We knew their dynamics, now theycould start playing.
Yes.
And having more fun, and beingquirkier, like they'd already
developed the baseline.
Now they could really go for it.
Sophie is much more fleshed out.

(13:02):
And I also like how it's a newerthing where the leads of shows
don't always do the best thingsfor them.
Yes.
Sophie is not.
A great

Steve (13:17):
girlfriend.
No, she's not.
She's doing her best, though, atall times.
And so, what do you think of KimCattrall being the mom, or being
Sophie in 2050?
And they made a lot of jokesabout what the future is like.

Stephen (13:34):
So, I actually...
Really liked that, especiallywasn't there a president,
Chelsea Clinton?

Steve (13:40):
No, my favorite was when they had President Ariana Grande
when she passed the Health Carefor You Act.
Yes!

Stephen (13:48):
Yes, that was what it was.
Our president Ariana Grande, souniversal health care is now a
thing.
So thank you Ariana Grande.

Steve (13:56):
Yes, I would love that.
That was probably, that was theone I had in mind.
That was my favorite part of thefuture.
But it definitely was very Likemodern while still holding true
to the original.
Now, we'll never know for sure, but who do you think the father
was?

Stephen (14:14):
Honestly, I'm going out on a limb here and going in a
different direction.
And it's gonna be Sid.
I can see that.
I, because, I, Sid and his wifewere not gonna work out.
Yeah.
And we're all like, everyone'slike, oh it's Jesse or it's Ian.

(14:34):
And I'm like, nope, I'm throwingin...
The dark horse candidate rightthere, and I think it's gonna be
Sid.

Steve (14:41):
I also was going with a different kind of theory because
I feel like it would be fun toplay with the modern
expectations that the father isthe person that you wind up with
and marry forever and ever.
Yeah.
That they were gonna make it sothat maybe the father was Ian.
Where she, like, got pregnantand had the baby.
And then, with all the travelingand the distance, it didn't work
out.
And then she followed her heartwith Jesse, who's the type of

(15:03):
guy who would raise the childlike a dad.
And so it would have been kindof not only, like, how I met
your father, but how I met yourstepfather, who is your father,
type of story.

Stephen (15:14):
I like that a lot.
I

Steve (15:15):
like your theory better.
Thank you.
So, that's how I Choose Itended.
But do you enjoy where it leftoff at least for the most part
because I'm happy my biggestquestion was answered because I
was Shipping Charlie and Sidmore than anything.
So the know that they ended upto Valentina Valentina.
Yes I read the names wrong, butyeah, Valentina and Charlie

(15:36):
together and knowing that theyhad a kid and walked out
together Made me happy.
That was enough.

Stephen (15:41):
That was enough for me as well.
I agree.
That was a good one and thanksHillary Duff, you had another
really good show, I appreciateit.

Steve (15:49):
You did.
Now, on to the Meg 2, TheTrench.
Was that enough shark for you,my love?

Stephen (15:56):
I have conflicting thoughts on this movie.
All right, well, why don't youtell us about it first?
I was

Steve (16:00):
gonna say I love that you chose this as something making
us happy when you're conflicted.

Stephen (16:04):
No, it still made me happy.

Steve (16:06):
Oh, okay.
Well, it is a sequel to 2000eighteens The Meg, and it's
based on the 1999 novel, theTrench by Steve Alton and Stars
Jason Statham as a shark killingexpert who dives deeper than any
sea astronaut has ever dovebefore, only to bring something
back with him again.

Stephen (16:24):
Yes, it had a budget of 129 million and a box office of
385.
9 million, making it a success, but the question was, did we
like it?
And overall, it's yes.
It was an entertaining movie.
I

Steve (16:39):
enjoyed seeing the progress they made in the
trench, and like the stationsand everything they made down
there.
We knew that they were going towind back up again on the
surface.
And I love that it wasn't justthe sharks, but all the other
fun creatures.
100 percent

Stephen (16:54):
about that.

Steve (16:55):
The action was there, the little dog was there and
survived again.
So, you know, in terms of, Iwent into it with very low
expectations, because sharkmovies are more your thing.
I love shark movies so much.
In terms of what I expect ashark movie to deliver, I would
say it hit all parts.
What about you?

Stephen (17:13):
The first one was the perfect blend of shark horror
action and enough camp thrown inbecause it knew what movie it
was trying to be.
I feel like with this one, theywent just too far in the camp
department and the over the topaction that it made it, like,

(17:38):
okay, obviously, it's a sharkmovie about a megalodon.
It's obviously not going to berealistic.
This one felt very unrealisticbecause of them going just too
far.
Not that it wasn't fun, I justfeel the first one was

Steve (17:55):
better.
I also feel like the dynamic, not even like it was a romantic
relationship, but the dynamicbetween the lead and his co star
from the first one, the womanwho didn't come back for the
second one.
It was kind of like it wasmissing a piece, and the
daughter did a good job offilling it, but it could have
used...
That to kind of create more ofthe heart that it was missing.
100%.
But I do love that the guy whosurvived the first one learned

(18:16):
how to swim and...
And become a survivor badass,yes.

Stephen (18:22):
and he was like, I'm not gonna be a stereotype
anymore.

Steve (18:25):
Yeah.
So I mean, the book series hasdozens of books seriously, so
they can keep this going as longas we want.
The next one, if they follow thetrend, would be called the Meg
three Primal

Stephen (18:37):
Waters.
So one of the things that Ireally liked about this was that
it did bring in an octopus likecreature and Those, the weird
things on the land, yeah.
So, I would be happy if theyexplored that a little more as
well.
I think that would be thoroughlyenjoyable, so.

(18:58):
I am open to more shark movies, always, because obviously I
watched all the sharknadomovies.
I've watched most, I mean I evenwatched that stupid one called
Land Sharks, where the peopleare stuck on a beach because the
sharks are under the sand but,so, yes, Meg 3, bring back Jason

(19:21):
Statham, bring back the littlegirl that's the teenage girl
now.
Bring back the guy that's now asurvivor and can swim But strive
for a little closer to the firstthan the second.
Yes

Steve (19:37):
Excellent.
And if there is a shark movieout there that you think that
Steven might not have seenbefore Let us know cuz you would
always love to hear about a goodshark movie You can please do or
