Steve (00:02):
Hello, returning Happys and new listeners.
This is Steve Bennett Martin,

Stephen (00:06):
and this is Steven Martin Bennett, and welcome,
welcome to

Steve (00:08):
A Lifetime of Happiness, the podcast where we take you on
our journey through some of themovies, shows, and other bits of
pop culture that are helping tokeep us happy, while hopefully
bring a smile to your face alongthe way.

Stephen (00:17):
And today we've got a mix of everything.
As we discussed the quirkycomedy outlaws the new season of
the Supernatural AdventureSeries, the Witcher.
And shutter's new film, thelesbian Shining, I mean, bad
things.

Steve (00:33):
Yes.
But before we get into that, mylove, besides surviving a
hurricane that put us out ofcommission for a week or two,
what's been going on that's beenmaking you happy?

Stephen (00:43):
Well, last week was a super blue moon.
Super indeed.
And the next super blue Moonwon't be until 2037.
I'll be dead.
No.
Oh, okay.
It's only 14

Steve (00:58):
years from now.
Oh no.
I'll be alive.
I expect to be alive.
I don't know how to do math.
Math, math is hard, right?
Math is hard.
That's why math is hard.
That's why I'm married, afinance major.

Stephen (01:09):
Okay.
And so full moons are alwaysgreat.
Blue moons are even better.
Super blue moons are the best.
And we had a really great crowd.
A lot of returning people, somenew people, and it was just a
good evening.
Yeah.
I

Steve (01:23):
love that your moon ceremonies that you hold each
month now are virtual, so evenlisteners in theory could find
rising Phoenix metaphysics on,on Facebook, and yeah, sign up.
Cool.

Stephen (01:34):
I mean, You might even put it in the show notes, if

Steve (01:38):
I remember.
Babe, you're at tall orders now, recording the night before
release.
Yes.
Well, I also have to add that Irecently have fallen head over
heels in love with AI betweenCanva's.
AI writing that I can say makethis mean thing, I wanna say at

(01:59):
work sound nice to Spotify's DJX, which somehow has been
managing to find the perfectcombination of nineties pop punk
as well as modern day top hits.
And with a titch of musicals, but not too many has been really
fun.
Like the fact that it reallyseems to know me, and I mean

(02:19):
obviously it does, it knows whatI'm listening to.
But it's cool having a DJ that.
Makes the radio for me.
Exactly.
So yes, I'm ready for the robotrevolution.
I'm on the side of the AIbecause they make my life

Stephen (02:30):
better.
Yeah.
I'm gonna still stick against AIat this point, just because
people are trying to use it toget rid of actors and writers.
Oh, well

Steve (02:41):
we, we need those people.

Stephen (02:43):
Yeah.
People are trying to say that AIcan write movie scripts, and I'm
like, I

Steve (02:48):
doubt it could do it better than some.
It could do it better than thekiller unicorn.
Which is one we won't even becovering on this podcast, but it
exists out in the universe.
And don't

Stephen (03:00):
go find it.
Yes.
But

Steve (03:03):
yes.
We'll start with Out TheOutlaws, which is a 2023
American action comedy filmdirected by Tyler Spindle and
produced by the Happy Madisonteam.
That stars Adam Devine, NinaDore, Ellen Barkin, and Pierce
Brosnan.
The film follows Adam as hisengagement to Parker and career
as a bank manager collide, as hesuspects his future in-laws are

(03:24):
the culprits behind the heist.

Stephen (03:26):
Yeah.
This So Adam Divine.
Sometimes I think he's funny andsometimes I think he's trying
too hard.
Yes.
He run, he walks that fine linein a lot of his performances
because, If he's in a movie, youknow what you're getting.
And he is always at 11.
He's always at 11.

(03:46):
Even in that show, I've beenwatching the Righteous
Gemstones.
Oh, okay.
He, it he's still very AdamDivine.
Yes.

Steve (03:55):
But the movie was great.
I mean, I, I love, loved him.
Nina like didn't have to do muchin the movie, but she did well
with what she did.
Looking at the two of themtogether, I would never buy
their chemistry, but theydefinitely had it on film.
Like I bought them as a coupleeven though it was wacky.
Yeah, absolutely.
I saw them together.
Yeah.
The moment she started likenoticing like the action figures

(04:16):
that were representing thewedding people and she was able
to like notice the differentsuperheroes and stuff he was
into, I'm like, oh, okay.
Like, so she like not onlytolerates his nerdiness like we
see so many.
Oftentimes like the, thehousewives or the girlfriends
like tolerating the nerdiness.
Yeah.
Like she loves it and I lovethat

Stephen (04:34):
for them.
Exactly.
And like we got to know NinaDobra from the Vampire Diaries.
And at first as Elena, I wasalways like, eh.
But then whenever she playedCatherine, and there would be
times where.
It was both of them together inthe same episode.

(04:55):
Catherine pretending to be Elenaor Elena, pretending to be
Catherine, and you could tellwhich of the four she was doing,
like I have a lot more respectfor her acting ability and it's
nice to see her doing.
More

Steve (05:11):
things.
Yes.
And while I did love theOutlaws, like, and they were
more endearing than I thoughtthey would be with Alan Barkin
and Pierce Brosnan'sperformances, I, I almost feel
like I enjoyed the, the otherin-laws more with Richard Kind
as Neil and Judy Haggerty asMargie Brownings, because.
They remind me of my mom and dada little bit.

Stephen (05:31):
So Richard Kind was always really good in this
Michael J.
Fox show called Spin City.
Mm-hmm.
And Julie Haggerty is an amazingcharacter, actress, whoever
thought to put the two of themtogether.
Yeah.
Brilliant.
Yes.
Like I want to see them as moreparent things.

(05:51):
Yeah.
Or like.
Running a school together orsomething like there's comedy
gold between the two

Steve (05:57):
of them.
Yeah.
And you've worked at a bankbefore or did you ever get a
bank heist where it was an armedrobbery in West Virginia?
Doesn't it not work becauseeveryone's related?

Stephen (06:06):
So funny.
We actually got sent out of townonce.
By the F B I because dad's bankwas being targeted by the
Russian Mafiaa and so they sentus on vacation because there was
a whole thing where what theywould do is kidnap the bank
president's family, hold themfor ransom.
And make the bank president getthe money out of the

Steve (06:28):
vault.
Well, I'm glad that didn't cometo happen.
How would you react though ifyou Oh, I have more.
Okay.
I was trying to cut it off'causeI know one part of the how the
story No, we're, we're okay.

Stephen (06:38):
And, but one of our branches was robbed and the
branch manager was locked in thevault.
For how long?
I think only an hour, butthere's air vents and things in
there.
You can't, you won't suff diefrom suffocation.
Yeah.
All the bank vaults are madesafely these days.
Yeah.
But just like.
It's a tiny town and it wasrobbed like, yeah.

Steve (07:00):
That's crazy.
Yeah.
I mean, how would you react iflike, I know that I would, I
would be the one on the floor.
I would follow the commands.
I would not question it.
I would just let

Stephen (07:09):
myself be robbed you.
First day of training, they, theperson that trained me was like,
it's money, it's insured.
Don't be a hero.
Give them what they want.
Don't do anything else.
Yeah.

Steve (07:25):
Well then I would do just fine in a heist.
Under the right horrendouscircumstances like Adam found
himself in, could you ever seeyourself robbing a bank?
Yeah, of course.
Alright.
I mean, yeah.
Yeah.
But I, I would say that this wasa perfect combination of action
and comedy.
Oh,

Stephen (07:41):
absolutely.
I mean, you know, with AdamDivine, it's gonna be a comedy.
Comedy and Richard Kind andJulie Haggerty.
Then to find out that.
Ellen Barkin.
I've seen her in a lot ofthings.
She's extremely talented.
She was great in Oceans 13, andPierce

Steve (07:58):
has done a, an action movie or two,

Stephen (08:00):
right?
I mean, he may or may not havebeen James Bond at one point.
And he also was in the two MamaMia movies.
Yes.
So I

Steve (08:09):
would say that this is a watch.
Check it out.
It's free on Netflix.
Yeah,

Stephen (08:13):
I absolutely watch it.
It was funny.
And I would say it's probablyone of those things if we're
ever like having a lazy, rainyday or something and all of a
sudden it pops up on cw, I'm notgonna change the channel.
Yeah.

Steve (08:28):
True.
Now also on Netflix.
We recently watched the mostrecent season of The Witcher,
which I'll get us started untilI get to Russian names that you
can read.
Okay.
So it is based off of the videogame series of the same name
that we both know and love.
We play through it on ourswitches.
Yes.
And The Witcher was created by

Stephen (08:46):
Lauren Schmidt Trich, who previously wrote for the
West Wing Private Practice andDaredevil the series as well as
the Umbrella Academy.
Stars Henry Cavel as Geral ofrvia a magically enhanced
monster Hunter, known as aWitcher, Anya Charra as Juniper
of Berg.
A quarter elf sorceress andthey're now basically adopted

(09:09):
daughter Siri, the CrownPrincess of Centra with a
mysterious destiny surroundingher elder blood.

Steve (09:17):
Yes.
And the first two seasons werereally about their journeys as
individuals and to get together.
Yeah.
So I was very interested to seehow season three would handle.
With going forward from there.
I, I personally loved thebeginning when I got, when we
got to see them play house forthat like first 10, 15 minutes
of the episode.
'cause it really did change the, their entire dynamic for the

(09:40):
rest of the season of thesethree characters.
All of a sudden I have thislike, loving tenderness for
towards one another.

Stephen (09:45):
Yeah.
And as I had told you, like inthe game, I was torn between
Tris and Effer.
Garal being with Tris orJuniper.
But in the show it's, there'snot even a choice.
No.
I mean, the chemistry that HenryCaval and Anya have is truly
amazing and it's justimpressive.

(10:09):
And Siri has grown on mebecause, I don't care for her in
the game

Steve (10:15):
at all.
No, I'm like, she gets youthrough a lot of extra work and
it's not fun to play as her.
'cause you don't have all yourma magic

Stephen (10:21):
powers.
No.
And in the first two seasons ofthis show I was like, I don't
think you're worth it.

Steve (10:27):
I liked it once I saw in season two when she was getting
the fuck beaten out of her onthat obstacle course in Karen
Warren.
Yes.
Like that's when I was like,okay, she's got something.
She's not just like a littlewhiny and privileged
protagonist.

Stephen (10:38):
Yeah.
And but this season she was somuch

Steve (10:40):
better.
She was very good.
And we finally had some gaynesswith our favorite bard and
Prince vid.
What'd you think of their littleromance?

Stephen (10:47):
I loved it.
They had amazing on-screenchemistry, you could see it
right away.
And.
I just really, really enjoyed

Steve (10:56):
that so much.
Yes.
And the first half of theseason, which came out first,
'cause this was one of theNetflix split in half ones Uhhuh
ended with the Witches Ball, which we've been promised would
change the, the face of Reviaforever.
Yeah.
Whatever country they're in.
Like how, what was that balllike for you watching it?

Stephen (11:14):
It, so it was a, More drawn out Red wetting Yes.
Is how I felt that it went.
But not red wetting in the sensethat died.
There was, there was nothingthat the other side could do.
Just that level of

Steve (11:36):
shock, death,

Stephen (11:38):
blood, like game changing things.
Yes, and that's exactly whatthis was.
And.
It was incredibly well done fora television show.
The special effects werephenomenal.

Steve (11:52):
Oh, cinematic quality.
Yes, for sure.
Yes.
Yeah.
And yeah, I would say that itdefinitely delivered on its
promises of changing everything.
And if you are watching anepisode where a third of the way
through, you're wonderingwhether it rewound or skip back,
it's not.
It's just how they're tellingthe story and it's worth it.
So stick it.
Yeah.

Stephen (12:10):
Just so you are watching it for one episode.
They're telling it from certainperson's perspective and then
they go back and show you how itall came to be.
So you're not on drugs.
You didn't fall asleep.
It didn't rewind.
I didn't relapse without knowingit.
Exactly.
It really is just showing youfrom a different, different

(12:32):
angles because so much went intowhere it all got to that.
It's interesting to see all themoving pieces, and this was the
best way to do it instead ofdrawing it all out, was to show
us, this is how it looked fromthis way.
This is how it looked from thisway, and this is how it looked
from that

Steve (12:51):
person.
I.
Yeah.
And the second half of theseason was equally as
impressive.
It felt like it sped throughafter the, the red, the, not the
red wedding.
It's not officially that, but,but the witches ball, after the
witches ball, it, it definitelywas a nice kind of coda to that,
more so than an entirely newstory.
Yeah.
But I also am interested to see,What's ahead?

(13:11):
'cause we know that Gerald hasbeen recast as Liam Hemsworth.
So Yeah, with like, withoutgetting into specifics, like I
was planning on the, somethinghappening at the end of the
season that would like disfigurehis face tragically, or

Stephen (13:25):
I've seen pictures.
It's real close.
It's real close.
So we might not even Yeah, you're, other than probably a
little bit of voice and thatHenry CA's a little bulkier I.
I think it's gonna be fine.
Okay.
Liam's Hemsworth is a goodactor.
I mean, he's one of theHemsworth triplets.
Yes.

(13:45):
Quadruplets.
Quadruplets.
I always forget about the fourth

Steve (13:48):
one.
One.
Yeah.
There's the fourth one from TheGood Place.

Stephen (13:50):
Yes.
Now.
And so I'm excited to see wherethat all goes.
I do feel bad for Henry becauseI think he got screwed over by
DC because rumor had it.
That he left this show and theymade the decision because like,
they were like, oh, you can't beSuperman and Gerald of rvia and

(14:16):
like, and now he's ne

Steve (14:18):
neither.
Oh no.
And he was such a good nerd withit too.
Yeah.
Well here's looking forward tonext season, but if you've
enjoyed the Witcher so far, orlike science fiction, fantasy.
Fun.
Not science fiction, butfantasy.
High fantasy, fun checkout.
Yeah.

Stephen (14:34):
It's a good time.
Yes.
And last is bad things.
Yes.

Steve (14:39):
Was bad things bad.

Stephen (14:41):
We'll find out.
It was.
It was not.

Steve (14:42):
Yes, it's a shutter.
Original.
Bad Things follows A group offriends who go to a hotel for a
weekend getaway.
Or like to prepare it forselling.
Yeah.
Because they own it.
Yeah.
And soon discover that women dobad things there.
That's the legit I M D Bdescription.
But I would say it's the lesbianshining much better.
Doesn't that kind of add up foryou what to expect?

Stephen (15:02):
It does.
It was written and directed byStuart Thorn Dark Stars Gale
Rankin.
Hari Neff Annabel Dexter Honesand features Molly Ringwald.
So Gale Rankings character.
Has inherited a budget choicehotel.
Yes.
Not a great hotel, but it's ahotel.

(15:23):
Her girlfriend, Harri, Neff iswith her and two of their
friends.
There's been some situations wehear a lot about Gail's mom and
that she's supposed to bemeeting them there to help with
the sale because I.
They're just gonna sell thehotel while hard enough's, like,
I think you could actually dosomething great with this and is

(15:46):
trying to get her to be a hotelSs or a ho hotelier.

Steve (15:51):
Something like that.
Yeah.
I mean, what'd you think of thesetup?
Did it work for you for tellingthis story?
I.
It

Stephen (15:55):
did.
Because, you know, they getthere, a storm's coming.
The hotel's not open foroperations, so they're the only
ones in the hotel.
There's the onsite manager thathelps with things when no one's
there.
I definitely think it had agreat potential.
The I.

(16:17):
I think they could have gone alittle further with some stuff.
Mm-hmm.
Like if we're talking about theexecution of things I like'cause
they started showing things ofpeople that ghost had happened.
The ghost, yeah.
Yeah.
The ghosts that had things thathad happened to'em.
And I wish that they had foundmore information on some of
those things and that we got alittle deeper in with that.

(16:43):
I do like how as it went on,everybody started seeing other
things.
It, it's kind of funny, itfeels.
Even though it's a modern daymovie, it kind of felt like it
was filmed in the eighties.

Steve (16:59):
Yeah, probably also'cause of the budget, probably.
Also.
Probably, yeah.
I would say that if the idea ofwatching a lesbian version of
The Shining sounds awesome toyou, it's on shutter.
If you're already paying for thesubscription, check it out.
Don't get shuttered toexperience the lesbian Shining.
There are other great things onshutter, on shutter like ula.
Yes, but also like, I mean, itfelt like it was like 30%

(17:22):
horror, like ghost horror and30% psychological horror, and I
couldn't really figure out wherethe, the missing 40% was

Stephen (17:30):
it Exactly.
It was like that.
They didn't go far enough witheither and it should have been a
50 50.
Yeah.
And it left it with it, it feltlike a piece was missing.
I think.
It felt like a piece was missingand you keep watching it and
you're like, I wish they haddone this or I wish they had
done that.
And I'm, and I'm not saying it'sa bad movie'cause it's not, it's

(17:53):
well acted.
It has a great concept.
I would've changed, you know, afew slight things like apart,
right around the ending Iwould've changed.
Yeah.

Steve (18:05):
I mean, it was better than killer unicorn.

Stephen (18:09):
I have not watched many things that are worse than
killer unicorn.
There

Steve (18:13):
we go then.
So we'd love to hear what youthought of the three movies that
we discussed today, or the twomovies in one show we discussed
today.
And if for some reason you putyourself through Killer Unicorn
already and wanna lament, we'dlove to hear about it.
