Magic Barclay (00:43):
welcome back to a magical life.
I'm your host, Magic Barclay.
And today I'm joined by ChadPeavey.
Chad.
Is an author and teacher.
He grew up in an emotionally andphysically abusive family in
rural Arkansas and spent yearslearning to overcome the trauma,
depression, and anxiety thatfollowed him into adulthood.

(01:06):
After earning a master's degreefrom the University of Texas at
Austin, Chad founded severalbusinesses and nonprofits.
Among these are the Austin PrideFoundation, as well as the in
house marketing agency for theworld's largest real estate
office and an online trainingcompany, and with his husband,

(01:28):
The P.
S.
Foundation for the Arts.
Following his passion forpersonal development, Chad has
created a system for supplantingdamaging beliefs with healthy
mindsets, and now offersguidance and support to all who
want to find the same freedom.
Welcome, Chad.

(01:48):
Hi, Magic.
How are you?
Good to be with you.
So good to have you here.
Now, We often talk on thispodcast about all healing comes
from some degree of inflammationand being better people comes
from some degree of having gonethrough some tough times.

(02:09):
And that can be varying degreesfor people.
You've had a very rough start.
What was the impetus to turnthat around for you?

Chad Peevey (02:20):
Yeah, I would say the impetus for me to turn it
around hit me when I realized asa young adult that the mindsets
that I had grown up with thathad helped me survive, that kept
me safe, that kept me fromgetting bullied, that kept me
off of my dad's radar.
Those exact same mindsets thatonce served me had became the

(02:41):
mindsets that were sabotaging meas an adult that were keeping me
small.
They were keeping me plain asless than what I could be.
That was keeping me fromrealizing my full potential and
exploring all the possibilitiesthat existed for me.
I, as you mentioned in my intro,I'm somebody that's lived with
depression and anxiety for asremember.

(03:01):
And what brought it all home tome was when the great recession
hit of 2008, and I lost a lot inmy business.
And it was like I built thislife, like from the outside
looking in, you would think, Oh,this guy had it all together.
And, but it was like a housewith no foundation.
I didn't have the skills toweather that kind of storm.

(03:25):
I didn't have the foundationalmindsets that would help me get
through it.
And the anxiety and thedepression made a real comeback
for me.
And it was at that moment that Iknew that I was either going to
die.
Check out or lean all the wayinto life.
And I chose to lean all the wayin.
And so now I'm out and writingabout my story through my book

(03:46):
and having conversations withgood people like you about that
journey and the hopes thatothers that are on a similar
path can glean something from myexperience.

Magic Barclay (03:56):
Great.
Now I ask all of my guests thesame three questions.
Everyone gives me terrificallydifferent answers, so here they
come.
Okay.
What can your expertise do toaccelerate health, not just
physical health, but alsoemotional and spiritual health?

Chad Peevey (04:14):
I would, I would say that my expertise can help
someone.
have a structured way ofthinking about their personal
development.
It is a way of creatingframeworks and mindset models to
help a person break free fromthe inherited mindsets that are
holding them back so that we cantruly create the life that we

(04:35):
want for ourselves, for thepeople that we care about, and
the causes that are important tous.

Magic Barclay (04:41):
And we talk about wealth here.
People think that's justfinancial, but it can also be
personal and emotional wealth.
So what are your top three tipsto creating wealth?

Chad Peevey (04:54):
Well, I love that you don't limit the definition
of wealth to just being money.
I am so rich in life lessons.
I am also rich in love from thepeople around me.
Uh, the three tips that I wouldrecommend for creating.
Personal financial or emotionalwealth would be number one to
create distinctions, uh,specifically defining what is

(05:18):
going on in your life and havinga true accounting of what's
happening in your life so thatyou can expand what you, what
you want more of and, andeliminate what you want less of.
So being really clear.
About what that wealth is foryou and what we know that what
we focus on expands.
And so how can we identify whatthose things are and expand

(05:40):
them?
I would say the second tip Iwould have would be opening
yourself up to being helped.
I think that's something I, theonly regret in my personal
development journey is that Ididn't get more help along the
way that I didn't reach out to,More coaches, more therapists,
more mentors, more guides, morepeople that have walked this
walk ahead of me and allowingmyself to be open to asking for

(06:01):
and receiving help from others.
And the third thing that I wouldsay, uh, the third tip for
creating wealth would be Toallow your past to be your fuel,
not your excuse, not allowingwhat was yesterday to determine
what will be tomorrow.
If we're going to have somethingnew in our life, new wealth,

(06:22):
expanded wealth, more growth, more development, then we have
to try new things.
And, and Allowing ourselves to,to not get stuck in our past, to
not get stuck in the way thingswere and moving ourselves
forward has certainly beeninstrumental, has been
absolutely key in me creatingwhat I consider my wealth.

Magic Barclay (06:43):
Terrific.
Now, I know on your guest sheet, you answered the next one with,
Never had an issue.
We talk about weight and, youknow, many people are stuck in
this rollercoaster of weight, weknow that that's often triggered
by stress.
So even though you haven't had aweight problem, what can you

(07:03):
offer the listeners around maybebreaking patterns to do with
weight from their childhood orbreaking free from the stress
that.
I guess fuels thatrollercoaster.

Chad Peevey (07:17):
Sure.
So, when I wrote my book, Idiscovered that there were three
different categories of mindset.
Three giant ideas that thesemindset methods that I'd written
about fit into.
And they were matters of self, matters of strategy, and matters
of social.
In other words, there are the meissues, the self stuff is me, I.

(07:38):
There's the strategy stuff, theit, the action, the behavior.
And then there's the socialstuff.
How we show up when we interactwith other people.
And what I realized is thatthose three categories, not only
offer insight into our mindsets, but they're also what create us
living our true selves.
However, that might be, thereare ways that we compensate and.

(08:01):
Mechanisms that we put in placeto protect ourselves, to defend
ourselves, that hold us backfrom living our fully authentic
lives.
And overeating was somethingthat was a part of my journey.
And I w I was about 60 poundsoverweight, uh, at my heaviest.
And it was realizing that I wasusing food to be a.

(08:25):
coping mechanism for me to feelgood in the moment.
It was certainly a part of myhabit to allow food to be what
gave me a little comfort wheneverything else was stressful or
I felt like it was fallingapart.
And so for me and all of mywork, whether it is overeating

(08:46):
or being tired all the time orbeing stressed or, uh, however
we blame ourselves or blameother people or, or identifying
ourselves as a victim.
There are things that we do tolock us behind, to hide
ourselves, to keep us fromliving fully and authentically
as ourselves and from allowingothers to see us as who we
really are.

(09:07):
And so that has been somethingthat's been really important to
me.
It's just understanding that I,by overeating.
Or by avoiding doing what's goodfor me that I am blocking myself
from living my greatestpotential that I am not dealing
with the issues at hand in ahealthy way.
And I have found a way that is,putting a bandaid on it with

(09:28):
food or overworking or even overexercising when, when tough
times pop up for me.

Magic Barclay (09:36):
Terrific.
Now let's get to what you do forpeople now.
So can you explain what it isthat you do and what resources
you have to help people?

Chad Peevey (09:51):
Sure.
So now I am writing.
So I have the book that's out.
I have the course that is out,the online course, and I do
coaching, one on one coaching, and I do a lot of speaking with
corporate employee resourcegroups.
And so that is how I am outtrying to share, uh, what it is
that I do and helping othersthat are on a similar path to

(10:13):
mine and the resources that Ihave, I have so many resources
on my website, including a freecopy of my book.
I share my, I call it my, mylibrary, which is basically this
digital bookshelf of everythingthat is in my library that I
found helpful.
I write a blog, I put out aweekly newsletter, all of these
things for free and hopes of.

(10:34):
Giving folks some help, advice, guidance, along their journey.

Magic Barclay (10:39):
Tell us about your book.
Tell us about what we canexpect, where that came from and
what you hope people gain fromreading it.

Chad Peevey (10:50):
Sure.
The book came about as a resultof not being happy in the
business that I had createdbefore the book came along.
I, as you mentioned in my bio, Iowned a marketing agency inside
the world's largest real estateoffice.
And I found that that workfilled the bank account, but it
didn't fill my soul.

(11:10):
And I wanted to feel more alive.
I wanted to feel more connected.
Overall to my work and feel likethat was a reflection of me.
And I just wasn't able to seethat in the world that I was in.
And I'm somebody that's been in,in and out of therapy since
fourth grade.
I'm somebody that has had to doa whole lot of work on myself.

(11:34):
And I realized that that work, hits a plateau.
There's a way that our personaldevelopment.
Is no longer personal.
The scars that we pick up on ourjourney aren't just ours, but
they are the exact thing that isgoing to help somebody else on
their journey.
And I realized that I had to getout of myself and I had to get

(11:57):
into service of others in a waythat I felt would really make a
difference.
And so I started writingeverything that I had been
learning about myself.
And what I picked up, in mychildhood and the lessons
learned there and how I wasdealing with that as an adult.
And it took me about four yearsto write the book.
And I discovered that there werethese 12 different mindsets that

(12:19):
were the most impactful in mylife that made the biggest
difference when I addressedthese 12 issues.
And I split those into the threecategories I mentioned of self
strategy and social.
And so that's what I put intothe book.
The book starts out, everychapter is a personal story
about how I stumbled upon thatparticular mindset, and then I

(12:40):
share three different lessons, and then I share three different
action items that the reader cango and, and put the, the lessons
into practice.
And so the book is more thanjust a book, it is also a
workbook.
I find that people who read thebook say it's not just a read it
and put it down.
It is a read and do as you goalong.
And most people reallyappreciate the action, approach

(13:01):
that I put into it.
And I think what folks shouldexpect to get out of it is, is
tools to take your next steptoward your personal freedom.
Toward feeling moreauthentically you toward feeling
more comfortable in your ownskin toward being able to hold
onto yourself in the presence ofothers and creating a life that

(13:23):
you have designed instead of onethat's just by default.
I think that's what folks shouldexpect.
And I am very happy to be onestep on somebody else's journey.
I'm not your destination, butI'm happy to be one step on the
journey.
And that's what you can expectto get.
Uh, from the book is, adirection to take the next step.

Magic Barclay (13:45):
Fantastic.
Now, many people, I guess, lookat coaches, look at authors and
go, well, you know, that's allfine for you.
How can I do this?
Can you just let the listenersknow how much work you've done?
On yourself and for yourself toget this, this healing going to

(14:08):
break free from the trauma fromyour past, just so that they can
get an idea that, you know, thefact that it might be taking
longer than expected is okay.

Chad Peevey (14:21):
Yeah.
So the way that I approach my,my work and my work with others
is I am not Moses on themountaintop bringing the word to
you.
I am a fellow traveler.
I am somebody that's in thethick of it.
I'm somebody that's in thetrenches and I am, I am sharing
with you what I'm learning alongthe way.
That is my approach.

(14:42):
I do not set myself up as theknow all guru.
I'm somebody here with you.
I may be a step ahead in someareas.
But I'm still walking thejourney of personal development
never ends.
it is a constant and ongoingthing because there are so many
different layers to who we are.

(15:03):
I tell my clients, there is nodestination.
There's only the journey.
The only destination is death.
that's the only destination.
Otherwise we're living, we'regrowing.
We are, I am pushing my clientsto be uncomfortable and
uncomfortable in a way that issuffering toward.
I give them a new vocabulary fortheir suffering.

(15:25):
I share with folks that I thinkof suffering as being the
consequence of unmetexpectations or desires.
There's a way that I want to gothrough the world and I want to
see certain outcomes andinevitably things don't go the
way I have imagined.
And the consequence of that is Isuffer.
This is the human condition, butevery day when I wake up, I get

(15:46):
to make a choice about how I'mgoing to suffer.
I can either suffer from the waythings are.
Were, or could have been, orshould be, or ought to be.
I can suffer from my experiencegrowing up and, and how awful
that was.
Or I can suffer toward.
I can suffer toward creating,uh, the life that I want for
myself, and the people that Ilove, and the causes that I care

(16:08):
about.
And that's the choice that weall have, every single day.
And it's not an easy choice.
And, but it, I think it is achoice worthy of intentional
awareness and effort toward.
Choose to suffer toward.
If you're going to suffer, suffer towards something that's
worth it, that's worthy of youand your life, and that's worth

(16:29):
creating.
And for me, that has guided meevery single day.
When I get up, I'm going tosuffer toward and I'm suffering
towards something that I'vechosen.
I am doing something that I wantto be doing, knowing that I'm
going to suffer, knowing thatI'm going to struggle, knowing
that it's going to be hard andknowing that that's just part of

(16:52):
it.
But I'm attached to thedirection.
I don't know where it's going,but I know the direction I'm
going is worth putting one footin front of the other and
heading that way.
So, for folks that are on thejourney of personal development,
that are on the journey ofhealing, that are on the journey
of overcoming, it gets better, but it, it gets better when you

(17:16):
realize one day, like, like Idid, that Good night.
The goal was never comfort.
The goal is never to get toneutral and stop.
The, the goal was never to getout of it and then stop.
But the goal is to get out ofit, get comfort, and then say,
I'm gonna reach a little higher.
I'm gonna keep going.

(17:37):
It's, and realizing that yourown healing is enhanced and
accelerated when you can helpsomebody on their journey of
healing.
And on their journey ofaccomplishing what they want out
of their life.
When you can do that, thebenefits come back to us
tenfold.
And so that's what I would, say,Magic, I would say, get up and

(17:58):
suffer toward, find somethingworthy of you.

Magic Barclay (18:02):
Fantastic.
Now we've covered a lot here.
Is there anything we haven'tcovered that you feel the
listeners need to hear?
