Now, today is all about thepermaculture principles.
Now, in permaculture, we usesystems of nature.

(01:55):
So we use soil, we use animals,we use companion planting.
We bring in good bugs to defeatthe bad bugs and keep our
produce nice and safe andhealthy and tasty.
And there's a lot of littleintricacies in the permaculture
principles.

(02:15):
So what I thought I'd do todayis.
teach you how I apply thepermaculture principles to
health.
Yes, they do cross over a fairbit.
So what we're going to talkabout today is, as I said, the
permaculture principles, butlooking at them from a different

(02:35):
angle, how we can improve ourhealth and how we can be more
ethical and sustainable andusing what we in permaculture
call closed loops.
So not necessarily relying onsupplementations and things like
that, but looking at what wealready have and how we can use

(02:57):
it.
So let's get started.
Permaculture principle numberone is observe and interact.
How does that apply to health?
We need to observe the foodsthat we're eating.
We need to interact with thefoods that we're eating by
growing as much as we can.
We need to look at ourenvironment.

(03:19):
How are we growing things?
Are we growing things in pots?
And that's fine if you'regrowing in pots and all you have
is a balcony, you can stillobserve and interact with the
foods that you're eating.
For example, you can be growingyour own herbs.
Now, most herbs have medicinalproperties.
So in an environment where allyou have is containers to grow

(03:44):
in, you can still grow yourmedicine.
Things like rosemary andlavender.
All rounders for the body.
They have so many functions,things like time, things like
parsley and dill.
They don't take up much space togrow.
And so you can not only create abeautiful environment, observe

(04:06):
and interact with your ownmedicine and foods.
Now, the other thing withobserve and interact.
is our mind.
And we have a system called theP N E I system.
Psycho neuro endo immunologysystem.
So that is our limbic brain, theP, our nervous system, the N,

(04:29):
our endocrine system, the E, andour immune system, the I, and
they all interlink.
So how can we observe andinteract with each other?
With our mind through the PNEIsystem, we can start by watching
what we say to ourselves,watching how we think about
ourselves, and really negatingany self inflicted negative

(04:56):
consequence.
Because when we do things likethat through our thoughts and
our feelings and our words, ournervous system reacts.
And when our nervous systemreacts, it gets to a point where
it can't take the load anymore.
It calls in our endocrinesystem.
So our hormones go off balance.
When that happens, it has adirect link to our immune types.

(05:18):
We've talked about immune typesa lot before in season one.
And, you know, so, you know,Maybe I'll do another podcast on
those soon, but this can have avery long lasting effect on us.
So permaculture principle numberone, observe and interact with
our foods, our environment, andour mind.

(05:41):
Permaculture principle numbertwo is catch and store energy.
So how do we do that in health?
Well, we have these littlepowerhouses called mitochondria.
So are your mitochondria feelingsafe to produce energy?
Or are you heading to a celldanger response?
Now again, I think through thisseason I will elaborate a bit

(06:03):
more on what some of thesethings are.
But if your mitochondria, so thepowerhouses in your cells, are
not able to feel safe, Andremember, your body has one job,
that is to keep you safe.
They're just not going toproduce the energy that you

(06:24):
need.
So you will feel tired,lethargic, depressed.
So how can you catch and storeenergy?
Well, you need to feed yourmitochondria the right things.
So here's where we link back upwith principle number one.
Principle number two, obtain ayield.

(06:47):
We all want the what's in it forme, don't we?
And this is what this is.
Are you prosperous in life or doyou feel like you're going
backwards?
Now this will link directly toyour PNEI system.
Maybe things aren't going theway you envision them or you
hope them to be at this point intime.

(07:08):
What you need to say to yourselfis I'm happy where I am.
But I'm also happy to grow andimprove and better my situation.
Allow that to come in, allowyour body to prepare and your
mind to prepare for growth andprosperity.

(07:29):
Of course, if you feel like youare going backwards and we all
have times in our life when thatis the feeling, don't verbalize
that to yourself.
Don't dwell on that.
To obtain a yield, we need tokeep growing, just as our
gardens would need to keepgrowing to obtain a yield of
produce.

(07:50):
So, we need to set the scene forourselves so that our bodies
feel prosperity, feel thatmoving forward, feel that there
is growth.
Our next permaculture principleis apply self regulation and
accept feedback.
Well, this kind of speaks foritself.

(08:11):
So when we're growing our foodor our herbs or our medicines or
whatever it is we're doing withour permaculture life, we accept
that sometimes things getstuffed up.
Now I'm gonna put my hand uphere.
I live on a property with tankwater.
I got so nervous about how muchwater I was using that I didn't

(08:34):
water my garden enough.
I needed to apply someself-regulation to how I felt
about using the water, knowingthat water is the big picture,
right?
Water is what helps me grow mygarden.
And so I accepted feedback.
My son actually said to me,water isn't that expensive to

(08:54):
buy and buy the tank.
Let's work out a plan.
around rainfall so that we'rebuying in less.
We're growing less water thirstycrops when we have less water.
And he was a hundred percentright.
So I applied this, how we applythis to our health.
Self regulation is key with ourhealth.

(09:17):
So what we need to do is.
You know, it's okay to have thetreats every now and then, but
we need to say to ourselves,that's a sometimes thing.
That's a reward for, you know,living by the 80 20 rule.
80 percent right.
20%.

(09:37):
Maybe not so right.
We need to put that selfregulation in place and we need
to accept feedback.
If someone says to you, do youknow what, maybe you just need
to take a break.
Maybe you need to drink a bitmore water.
Listen to it.
Don't take it as criticism.
Maybe they're coming from agreat place.

(09:58):
so apply self regulation andaccept feedback.
Our next permaculture principleis use and value renewable
resources and services.
So, in the garden, of course, wedo this.
This is closed loops.
We try and see what renewableresources we have, like compost,

(10:19):
like our food waste going intothe compost, or into a worm
farm, or into something where itcan decompose, break down and
become nutrients for our soil.
We might also save seeds.
We might also grow more than weneed so that we can barter and
trade for things that we don'thave.
Now, how this applies to ourhealth?

(10:41):
Well, we have doctors andmainstream medicine, and they're
actually the epitome of lack ofrenewable resources.
Right?
They prescribe medications whichare often toxic.
They patient blame.
Right?
The rise of idiopathic orunknown disease is just
incredible, and there's a lackof care and services which is

(11:04):
increasing.
Now, I'm not just doctor bashinghere.
They are time poor.
They have, when they do theirstudy, they have a certain
amount of time to learn a wholeheck of a lot.
And then when they go into thesystem, they only have a few
minutes to see each patient, andthey have to see so many
patients per hour.

(11:25):
So, you know what, their systemisn't renewable and sustainable,
but yours can be.
So you can do things likegrowing your herbs.
As I mentioned earlier, you cando things like taking time for
yourself and listening to yourbody.
You can do things like maybebarter.

(11:50):
As I said, Maybe you havechickens, backyard chickens, and
they lay too many eggs for youto eat.
So you can trade that withsomeone that might have too much
silverbeet or too many potatoesgrowing or whatever.
You can also trade for help.
So maybe you just don't havetime to clean your home.

(12:15):
You've got chicken eggs.
So you can ask one of yourneighbors, Hey, can you come and
give me a hand?
I'll pay you in eggs.
There's a lot of things we cando.
And particularly with ourhealth, we need to make sure
that whatever we're doing, we'reusing and valuing our own
renewable resources andservices.

(12:37):
So don't just spend money onsomething that is a You know, a
one time enjoyment, look at, isthis going to help me later?
Is this renewable?
And what I mean by that is, bysure, go out and, you know, have
a lovely meal.
But maybe make that a lovelyfamily meal, where you are now

(13:01):
sowing the seeds for discussionand an open, loving relationship
with your family, and that isrenewable.
That is using a resource, whichis going out for dinner and
turning it into something thatis healthy for you.
Okay.
The next one we have is produceno waste.

(13:24):
Now, when we're growing herbs,for example, we can benefit
from.
Both the medicinal side and thefood side of herbs, right?
And growing things can make ushappy.
So for example, lavender and allrounder I mentioned before can

(13:44):
actually calm your kids, yourpets, your chickens, help deter
pests whilst attracting keypollinators.
And it's beautiful.
What does it do for our health?
Well, it is great for balancingour nervous system.
It's great for balancing ourimmune system.
It's very calming on us.

(14:05):
So it helps stop that fight orflight syndrome coming into play
and we're producing no wastefrom it.
Everything that we cut off, wedon't use, whatever can go back
into our compost.
Now, applying this bit more toour health.
produce no waste.

(14:26):
With this, we need to look atwhat we're eating as well.
So we need to eat less stuffthat's wrapped in plastic
because that's producing waste.
It's also releasingmicroplastics.
We need to do things likestopping drinking bottled water.

(14:48):
We need to get a filter.
Now I have a portable filterthat I take everywhere with me
because I don't drink tap waterbecause, well, that's a story
for another day, but I won'tdrink bottled water because of
the microplastics.
I recently did a kitchen audit.
In my home and I got rid of allthe plastic chopping boards for

(15:08):
the same reason.
Now we got a lovely timberchopping board, which we
absolutely adore.
Hint here, don't drop it onyourself on your toe.
I haven't done that.
It hurts.
Uh, but we are reducing our needfor plastics.
And so we're closing a loopthere.
We're producing no waste.

(15:30):
We have very little.
Unrenewable.
and things like that.
So if you're going to theproduce store or the grocer, you
want to do things like paperbags that they have for
mushrooms.
Use those for anything thatyou're buying rather than the
plastic bags or take your ownreusable bags.

(15:55):
And next permaculture principleis design from patterns.
Now with our health, just likein a permaculture garden, we
need a plan.
So in my permaculture garden, Ihave a seasonal plan.
So I have autumn, winter, springand summer.

(16:15):
I've drawn a map of my gardenand I use tracing sheets as
overlays for each season.
So I know exactly what's been inthe ground.
I can rotate my crops between.
The leafies to the rootvegetables to the nitrogen
fixes, things like that.
So how do we do this with ourhealth?

(16:38):
Chasing symptoms is notsustainable.
You need to plan your success.
So what we're looking for hereis root cause.
We need to speak to a holisticcoach or a holistic counsellor
who can help us identify rootcause, or who can help us design

(16:59):
the sustainable plan.
And our team at Holistic NaturalHealth do exactly that.
So I will leave some details atthe end.
But what you need to do withyour health Is plan for success.
I'm sure many people have heardthe term failure to plan.

(17:20):
And if you have what that leadsto is a lack of success.
So what we're doing here is weare planning for the success of
our health.
What do we need to do?
Do we need to address our immunetype?
Do we need to address somethinglike mold or some other nasty
invader like LPS, which is abacteria?

(17:43):
Yeah.
Do we need to?
Look at things in our home.
Are there toxic things here thatwe need to replace?
So planning is very important.
And design from patterns todetails.
Well, in permaculture, we usepatterns and we use images.

(18:03):
Edges.
And so what we do here is welook at soil types and water
consumption and pollinators, andwe plan where things are going
to go.
And edges, we look at the edgesof the garden beds.
Can we fill those with herbs?

(18:23):
Or with flowers like acalendula, that can not only
keep the soil in, but help givenutrients, help bring those
pollinators in.
How do we do that with ourhealth?
Exactly the same way.
Planning is key.
Our next principle is integraterather than segregate.

(18:44):
Now, what we need to know hereis that no system works alone.
Remember that PNEI system, okay?
So that's, sorry, the pathway.
It's four systems workingtogether.
No system in your body worksalone.
Joint pain, It is not alwaysjust muscular, it's not always

(19:04):
just skeletal, it's not alwaysjust nerves.
It can be a whole lot of those.
It can be lymphatic as well.
It can be a sign of stress.
It can be an adrenal rush, itcan be an endocrine problem
because when you have a hormoneimbalance you will get niggles
and aches and pains.

(19:25):
So no system works alone.
Integrate rather than segregate.
The next principle is use smalland slow solutions.
Your health takes time.
This is not a sprint.
Okay.
This is a marathon and you wantto make it to the end of the

(19:46):
marathon by taking time toappreciate your health, but also
taking time to boost it andunderstanding that It's not
going to happen overnight.
By treating root cause,sometimes that can seem to take
a bit longer than we'd like.

(20:08):
For example, if we consume apill, we expect it to be
instant, right?
But by treating root cause, itcan take some time.
And it's not.
What are we doing when we'retreating root cause?
We're not just chasing asymptom.
We're looking at why thishappened, how we can stop it
happening again, and how we canbetter our lives.

(20:30):
Our next principle is use andvalue diversity.
Sticking with one healthprotocol can actually switch off
your body's healing phase.
So if we go one particulardirection for too long, We can
just completely switch our bodyoff from healing or we can drive
it the other way.
It can start responding in anegative way.

(20:53):
No supplements or vitamins orminerals should be taken without
re evaluation and a break.
Now the other thing that happenshere is when we take a
supplement for too long orindefinitely, our body might
actually switch off the process.
That we're taking the supplementto help boost or regenerate.

(21:18):
The body says, well, if you'rebringing that in all the time, I
don't need to do that.
So use value and diversity.
Our next principle is use edgesand value the marginal.
Now, I spoke about edges before.
So we look at the edges of thegardens for many, many reasons.

(21:38):
And in health, we must look athow we interact with the
environment around us.
And just to hint here, justbecause someone's your family
doesn't mean they're healthy tobe around all the time.
So our health journey shouldhelp those around us.
As well as us, and it needs tobe a bit of a give and take here

(22:01):
with the edge.
So the edge is on one side,people around you, on the other
side, you.
We need to intermingle therewith respect.
We need to make sure that ourhealth is being boosted by the
interactions that we do have bythe people that we are
surrounded by.
And we need to make sure thatour environment creates those

(22:24):
healthy edges.
Our final permaculture principleis to creatively use and respond
to change.
All change is good, even whenit's not.
Now, it sounds confusing, but achange in symptoms in our body
tells us a message.
And so we need to listen to whatthat message is.

(22:46):
We need to decipher it and weneed to respond to the change.
Now, this is the permacultureprinciples applied to health.
