Jemese LaChel (00:00):
I love episodes
like the one that I'm about to
share with you today, becausewe're getting into some tangible
steps and real practicalapplication that you can use to
address your mental health froma Christian perspective.
And so this is for anyone whohas been wondering about their
nervous system how does thatrelate to trauma and trauma
(00:22):
healing?
Does that relate to trauma andtrauma healing?
And also, specifically, ifyou're someone who has come out
of new age religion, if you'resomeone who has come out of
false religion and you're justlike, oh man, I don't even know
what is permissible anymore interms of what can I do?
Like?
Can I breathe deeply, like?
If you have questions about anyof that kind of stuff, you
definitely want to listenthrough this entire episode,
(00:43):
especially to the end.
Let's go Well, hey there.
Welcome back to a new creationpodcast where we are pointing
women towards victory in Christ, one Jesus story at a time.
(01:03):
My name is Jameis Lachelle.
I am your host.
I'm a Christian traumatherapist.
Let's dive right in to today'sepisode.
Recently, I received a messagefrom a young woman who is
navigating a major spiritualshift.
She is growing in the Lord, having left the new age behind
to follow Christ, and she'sfeeling confused about what's
(01:24):
appropriate when it comes totaking care of her health,
especially her mental andemotional well-being.
She's heard teachings that weshould rely on prayer alone for
healing, and that anythingbeyond this, particularly
strategies for calming the bodyor the nervous system.
Well, these things arequestionable or even dangerous.
(01:45):
This concern is common, especially when we hear terms
that sound more secular thanspiritual, and if you're someone
who has come out of the new ageor new thought, where
everything is framed in terms ofself-reliance and spiritual
manipulation, you might behesitant to trust anything that
(02:05):
remotely feels like a method.
Where everything is framed interms of self-reliance and
spiritual manipulation, youmight be hesitant to trust
anything that remotely feelslike a method.
There's often trauma thataccompanies leaving such belief
systems, a trauma that can leadto a lot of spiritual anxiety.
After all, the entire frameworkyou once trusted has been
(02:30):
flipped upside down, leavingroom for doubt and fear to creep
in.
Sadly, the enemy uses this tokeep women stuck in fear, making
them feel paralyzed and unsureof every decision.
But let's clear something upJesus calls us to steward our
entire being, our bodies, ourminds, our soul, our spirit.
Stewardship means takingresponsibility and managing
(02:53):
wisely what God has entrusted tous.
That includes our health.
In fact, 1 Corinthians, chapter6, verses 19 through 20, tells
us do you not know that yourbodies are temples of the Holy
Spirit who is in you, whom youhave received from God?
You are not your own.
You were bought at a price.
(03:14):
Therefore, honor God with yourbodies.
This verse emphasizes the valueof our bodies as God's temple.
Is the value of our bodies asGod's temple?
Your body includes the physicalhealth and even your nervous
system.
We are being called to honorGod with it, to be mindful of
(03:39):
this, to be mindful of how weare using our body.
We have a responsibility inthat.
Think of your body as a luxurycar like a Bentley or a Rolls
Royce, some of the most valuablevehicles in the world.
Would you neglect its upkeep orput in the cheapest fuel?
(04:01):
Of course not.
You'd ensure that it's wellmaintained because of its
immense value.
In that same way, god calls us,as the believer, to care for
our bodies because they aretemples of his Holy Spirit.
Taking steps to maintain ourhealth, which does include our
(04:22):
nervous system, that is not alack of faith.
It is an act of honoring whatGod has given you.
When I was a baby Christian, fresh out of new age, new
thought, belief system.
My own self, I used to thinkmuch more simplistically, just
believing God to carry meentirely and essentially do
everything for me.
(04:42):
While that is true, we do relyon God, we do rely on the Lord
to carry us.
He's the one who finished thework, not me, and I can't add to
anything that he's done.
That's true, but as I'vematured, I've come to realize
that the Lord has also given mepower, wisdom and free will.
(05:03):
For a reason there are stepsthat I can and should take to
maintain the freedom anddeliverance that Christ has
already secured for me.
It's not about self-reliance,it's about faithful stewardship,
and so I want to focus and honein on this discussion around
the nervous system.
(05:24):
It's something that is soimportant in the work that I do
with women.
For those who don't know me, Ido work as a Christian trauma
therapist.
I also work as a faith mentorfor women, and when we're
talking about trauma, so much ofour nervous system impacts the
trauma.
It's like the traumatic eventsthey kind of get.
(05:46):
They have these nervous systemresponses, and so you may think
that it's been 15 years and thesituation is way behind you but
your nervous system.
If you have not addressed it,if you have not taken and
surrendered it to the Lord, ifyou have not done the part that
(06:06):
you can do in the matter, thenervous system often has a
different story to tell.
So I am speaking to the womanwho is out there looking for
heavenly solutions.
She's wanting to know what arethe steps that she can take to
manage her mental health, tomanage her emotional well-being,
to steward her body in waysthat are biblical.
(06:28):
Let's just dive right into that.
Let's talk about the nervoussystem.
I'm going to be sharing someChrist-centered, specifically
three Christ-centered,biblically grounded strategies
that you can use to take care ofyour mental health and nervous
system going forward.
So your nervous systemfunctions kind of as your body's
control center and it managesessential processes like your
(06:52):
heart rate, your breathing andhow you respond to stress.
And it's divided into twoprimary parts the sympathetic
nervous system and theparasympathetic nervous system.
The sympathetic nervous systemactivates when you're under
stress or sense danger, helpingyour body react quickly so you
can think, fight or flight, oreven like hot red.
(07:15):
The parasympathetic nervoussystem works to bring your body
back into a state of calm afterthe stress has passed, think,
rest and digest, or cool.
To keep it simple, I like torefer to in sessions with my
clients, as you know, your hotnervous system and your cool
(07:35):
nervous system.
Activating the cool nervoussystem, the parasympathetic
nervous system, is typicallywhat we're trying to get to,
because that's the place whereyou're operating and functioning
from a place of calm.
And in today's world, especiallyafter experiencing deep
spiritual upheaval such as whatthis young woman was sharing
(07:56):
with me she was sharing about, you know, having left a new age
and really anyone who's gonethrough any other form of trauma
, I want you to know that ifthat's you, you're not going
crazy, you're not insane.
If you're feeling on edge allthe time, if you feel like
something's not right, it islikely that your sympathetic
(08:18):
nervous system is simplytriggered.
It can become so overstimulatedand when you are stuck in fight
or flight mode, your body stayson high alert, even when it
doesn't have to be.
I have so many experiences ofthis, even personally.
I can remember being so afraidof men related to a trauma that
(08:40):
occurred to me years prior.
I used to have so much traumaaround men and just encountering
groups of men it would justreally trigger me.
It got to the point where itwas even impacting my marriage.
This is the man I married.
I love my husband so very much, but it had gotten to the point
where, because I hadn't dealtwith it in Christ, it was really
(09:03):
having a heyday in my marriage.
So I want you to understand thatyou know this stuff.
It is real and it does impactyour life, but there's something
you can do about it.
One of the best things you cando is just bring awareness and
like educate yourself.
Right, the Lord said that hispeople perished for a lack of
knowledge.
Like educate yourself.
Right.
(09:24):
The Lord said that his peopleperished for a lack of knowledge
.
So I want you to know how todetermine if your body is
operating in a hot nervoussystem or if your sympathetic
nervous system is active.
No-transcript.
One way to know if this ishappening is by simply checking
(09:47):
in with your own body.
Pause right now and notice Areyou holding tension anywhere in
your muscles?
Maybe in your shoulders, yourneck, your jaw?
If so, this is a sign that yoursympathetic nervous system is
active.
When your sympathetic nervoussystem is not active, we're not
(10:09):
walking around with a tense body, right?
We want that relaxed musclebody From that place.
That's when this work that we dowith trauma and trauma healing
really starts to take root, because it is hard to heal when
you are in a hot nervous system.
It's hard to heal.
It's hard to heal when you arein a hot nervous system.
It's hard to heal, it's hard tofeel like you can have that
(10:30):
peace, that pastmisunderstanding, when you are
all tensed up.
And maybe this sounds sosimplistic, but it is.
It is kind of simplistic.
I'm trying to put answers andtools in your hands because I
want you, as a listener, to knowthat you don't have to live
like this, living from a placeof a overactive, sympathetic
(10:55):
nervous system or a hot nervoussystem, where you're in, where
you are in fight or flight allthe time Guess what?
It's not only exhausting, butit's also directly opposed to
the peace and rest that the Lord, god, intends for you.
An overstimulated nervoussystem can trap women in cycles
(11:15):
of trauma.
You will tell me in session thatyou know all you want to do is
get healed.
All you want to do is move pastthis.
All you want to do is stopliving like this.
You're tired of it.
But when your nervous system ispreaching to you a different
story and you don't know what todo about that.
(11:36):
It leaves you stuck.
You need to know that Godcreated your nervous system.
Your nervous system was hisidea and, just as he makes your
body and spirit, he alsodesigned the intricate ways that
your body responds to stress.
He knew that we would need aMessiah.
He knew that we would need theLord.
(11:57):
He knew that we would need theHoly Spirit living on the inside
of us.
And here's the thing if it wasso easy this is my response to
those who have been told youknow, just pray it away and just
trust God.
And just you know, prayer isgood and trusting the Lord is
excellent.
But here's the thing wouldn'twe all be walking around,
(12:19):
everybody in just this relaxedmuscle body, nobody getting
triggered or at anybody oranything, just the peace, just
the heaven on earth that we haveread about in scripture?
The reality is that we live in afallen world, but if you're
someone who has found yourselfkind of stuck in a loop and in a
(12:39):
cycle, I'm ready to put sometools in your toolkit.
I'm ready to help you learn thethings that you can do that are
godly and biblical, to help youaddress and manage your nervous
system, because learning tomanage and regulate your nervous
system in a healthy,god-honoring way is so crucial.
(13:00):
It will help you to heal fromthe fear and the confusion that
spiritual trauma can cause, orany form of trauma.
Well, I'm going to show you,I'm going to tell you, I'm going
to give you three strategiesthat are very Christ-centered,
that you can do easy peasy, starting today.
The first one is, I'm callingit the ABC method.
This is not something I came upwith.
(13:21):
This is straight from the HolySpirit, and so let's talk about
that.
So, when anxiety, fear orconfusion hit, one beautiful way
to shift your nervous systemfrom a place of chaos to peace
is by refocusing your mind onGod's character.
This could be a form of godlymeditation, biblical meditation.
(13:42):
While Eastern meditationfocuses on emptying the mind,
biblical meditation focuses onemptying the mind.
Biblical meditation focuses onfilling up your mind with the
word, with biblical truth, withthe word of God.
And so, in this strategy, whatyou're going to do?
You're going to go through thealphabet and for each letter,
you're going to name acharacteristic of God, a name of
(14:05):
God, something like this and so, for example, a might be Alpha,
b might be Beautiful.
C might be Creator.
You're going to go through theABCs and you can even take it a
step further and turn that intopraise, turn it into prayer.
Lord A, I bless your namebecause you are the Alpha Lord
(14:26):
Jesus.
B, you are so beautiful.
C God, I bless you.
I praise you.
Lord, you are creator of thisuniverse.
You are compassionate and gothrough every letter of the
alphabet.
This is wonderful to use ifyou're someone who suffers from
anxiety, where maybe your mindis going in a million directions
(14:47):
, it's going to be verygrounding.
You want to ground back intobiblical truth.
Instead of you know, let yourmind run rampant on whatever
anxiety is trying to tell you Inmoments of stress.
This method can align your mindand heart with the truth of who
God is, reminding you that he'sthe one who holds the world in
his hands and he is also holdingyou.
(15:09):
Powerful method If you'resomeone who can't sleep at night
.
Sometimes I remember goingthrough bouts where I had
trouble sleeping.
I would do this at night andeventually I'd find myself fast
asleep.
The second practical strategythat you can try is something
that I call body scanning, andit's just a simple, practical
(15:31):
and prayerful way to bringawareness to the physical stress
in your body, remembering thatone clear sign that your nervous
system is active and that youare.
When I say active, I mean youknow your fight or flight
response is active.
Our nervous system is alwaysfunctioning.
I'm specifically talking aboutthe sympathetic nervous system,
(15:52):
the hot nervous system that'sactive when you notice that your
body, your muscles are tight, you have tension in your muscles
for seemingly no reason, right?
A body scan is one way that youcan just check in with yourself
to see if this is going on.
And so you can either start atthe bottom of your feet or the
(16:13):
top of your head and you'resimply kind of like scanning
your body, moving up from yourfeet to your shins, your knees,
your thighs, hips, your low back, all the way up to the top of
your head, and noticing anyareas where you are holding
tension or discomfort.
If you identify tension in thebody, consciously releasing
(16:34):
those muscles, relaxing thosemuscles and even praying over
those areas.
And so just today, thisbeautiful woman of God she's a
wonderful Titus 2 woman in mylife I was telling her that you
know I had been having troublesleeping.
I wasn't sleeping good and justtossing and turning at night
and all we prayed together andwe just spoke right to the body
(16:58):
and she had me to say Lord, Isurrender this tension in my
body to you, and so that's asimple way that you can bring
prayer into it.
So if you notice that you tendto hold a lot of stress in your
shoulders, for example, god, Irelease the tension in my body
to you.
(17:18):
Lord, I thank my body fortrying to hold on to this,
trying to keep me safe.
But, lord, I know that you arethe one who keeps me safe.
You are my safety.
Lord, I remember Psalm 121.
You keep me safe, you preserveme from all evil.
I release this tension to you.
It's a practice of releasingcontrol and trusting God with
(17:41):
your physical and emotionalburdens.
This method is especiallyimportant for nervous system
regulation because, like Ishared, healing from trauma is
difficult if your body is in astate of active tension.
Science has shown that arelaxed muscle body is effective
for helping you shift out ofyour sympathetic nervous system
(18:02):
into your parasympatheticnervous system.
It's so important, and the verylast one would be just
breathing.
Your breath is something thatGod himself designed.
God himself designed deepbreathing into your very being.
In Genesis 2-7, we read thenthe Lord.
God formed man of dust from theground and breathed into his
(18:26):
nostrils the breath of life, andthe man became a living being.
The very breath in your lungsis a gift from God given to
sustain life.
When we feel overwhelmed, anxious or stressed, taking a
moment to breathe deeply canhelp regulate your nervous
system, bringing calm to bothyour body and your mind.
(18:51):
I want you to imagine a newbornbaby who has been crying for
hours.
Maybe she's colicky, she'supset, but when she's placed in
the loving arms of her mother orher father, her caretaker, she
finally finds comfort, hermuscles relax, she lets out that
sweet, deep, contented sigh.
(19:13):
Nobody would ever suggest thatthat baby is doing something
wrong or dangerous by taking adeep breath of relief.
And, in the same way, yourbreath is not something to be
afraid of, it's not somethingevil or spiritually dangerous.
I know this might sound strangefor me to be saying it like
(19:36):
this, but for someone listening,I know that you're in the
process of renewing your mindafter leaving a false religion,
leaving the new age, leaving afalse belief system, and it's
important for you to hear thistruth.
You are safe in the hands ofyour heavenly father and your
breath, just like the rest ofyour body, is a gift from him.
(19:59):
For some believers, theconfusion comes from seeing
practices like yoga or, you know, a new age, guided meditation
methods, things like this, whichtreat breath, treats breathing,
as though it has some kind ofsaving power in and of itself.
But let's be clear.
Jesus is our savior.
It's not our breath.
(20:20):
The breath that God gave us issimply a tool to help us live.
It's part of the way hedesigned our bodies to function.
Taking a deep breath is notinherently wrong or evil.
It is the, I would say, it isthe spirit behind it.
(20:44):
Are you using your breath insome sort of like manipulative,
demonic sense, like new agers, eastern yoga, meditation,
eastern meditation, things likethis?
They really manipulate thebreath and I think that's what a
lot of believers are afraid of.
They're afraid of Satan comingand attacking them through these
(21:07):
breath practices.
That's not what we're talkingabout here.
Your breath is not evil.
God gave you your breath.
We want to be functioning inthe Holy Spirit.
We want to be functioning inthe Spirit of God.
So I just feel led to clarifythat, for someone listening,
your breath is not inherentlywrong, evil.
It's not wrong to know thatscientifically.
(21:30):
When I take a deep breath, myheart rate slows down.
When I take a deep breath, it'seasier for me to relax.
Try holding your breath for areally long time, like that's a
very tense situation.
Right, we have to take a deepbreath.
This is how the Lord made usand so it's just.
You know, having the right andproper mindset, you're not using
your breath to heal you.
(21:52):
You know that in Jesus Christ, only he is our healer.
But you can't separate the factthat he made you a human being.
He gave you this body, he gaveyou air and breath to fill your
lungs and it is absolutely okayto know that by taking a deep
breath your nervous system calms, that, it gets you out of.
(22:13):
You know that trauma place inyour mind.
You can just simply breathe, you can pray and you can
remember.
You can slow down in Christ andthen move forward from there.
The Bible tells you that you'resupposed to take every thought
captive and make it obedient toChrist, and so when these
(22:34):
anxious thoughts come in, youhave the authority to tell those
thoughts where to go, that theyare lies and when you choose to
breathe deep in that momentwhere the fiery dart has headed
straight at you.
When you choose to respond withrest, that confounds the enemy,
(22:57):
you're putting your faith towork and you're acting on the
truth that you are already safein Christ Jesus.
The key is to remember thatyour breath is not the healer.
Jesus, christ of Nazareth isthe healer, and I know I said
(23:20):
three things, but here's afourth one.
This fourth and final strategyis foundational, and it really
should have been the first onethat we talked about, and it's
as simple as taking Jesus at hisword.
In Hebrews 4.16, we're remindedto come boldly to the throne of
grace that we may obtain mercyand find grace to help in the
time of need.
(23:40):
This isn't just an invitation,it's a promise.
When we come humbly to Jesus, trusting fully in him, oh, he is
more than enough.
He is more than enough.
We don't have to have all theanswers or perfect solutions.
He simply calls us to come tohim and trust him.
(24:03):
1 Peter 5, verse 7 says to castall your cares upon him,
because he cares for you.
So often the anxiety that wefeel and the constant state of
being alert in our nervoussystem, it stems from carrying
burdens that were never meantfor us to hold on to Somewhere
(24:26):
along the way, perhaps you'vedecided to trust in your own
ability to protect yourself, tobe in control of your
circumstances.
You took matters into your ownhands.
You said that'll never happento me again.
I'll never let somebody hurt melike that again.
And now you function from aplace where your body remembers
that.
(24:46):
Your body remembers.
Your muscles are tight all thetime you can't sleep at night or
however it's manifesting inyour life.
Messes are tight all the timeyou can't sleep at night or
however it's manifesting in yourlife.
We were always supposed to trustthe Lord, and so casting your
cares on Jesus is an act ofsurrender.
(25:08):
That word, cast, literallymeans to throw, and so I like to
think of it as I got a fishingline and I'm literally taking
this care, I'm taking thisanxiety.
I am throwing it to throw, andso I like to think of it as I
got a fishing line and I'mliterally taking this care, I'm
taking this anxiety.
I am throwing it to Christ, Iam throwing it to my triune God.
That's where it is now.
It's not here anymore.
I casted it away to him.
It's an act of surrender.
(25:30):
It's a daily choice to let go ofyour worries, your fears, your
stresses and place them in thehands of the one who is able to
bear them.
This isn't a passive act.
It's active faith.
You are saying, lord, I trustthat you care for me and I'm
giving you everything weighingon my heart.
(25:50):
When we release our anxietiesto God, we are aligning
ourselves with his word and hispromise of peace.
This is crucial for nervoussystem regulation, too.
By casting your cares on theLord, you're releasing the
constant tension and stress thatweighs down both your mind and
(26:11):
your body.
The peace that follows isn'tjust an emotional experience.
It's a physical, spiritual andmental release that allows you
and invites you to rest in hispresence.
So, in closing, I just want tosay that, as believers, it's
important to remember that Goddoesn't call us to choose
(26:34):
between faith and wisdom.
He invites us to embrace both, while our ultimate healing and
peace comes from him.
He has also entrusted us withthese bodies that need proper
care and stewardship.
Learning to steward your nervoussystem as a Christian isn't
about relying on secular orworldly methods.
(26:55):
It's not about falling intoself-reliance.
It's about acknowledging thatGod created your body and gave
you tools to help maintain thehealth that he has blessed you
with.
Remember our walk with Christis not just spiritual, but
physical, mental and emotional.
By learning how to calm yournervous system and take care of
(27:18):
your health in God-fearing ways, you are saying yes to Him.
You're saying yes to His desirefor you to live in peace.
You are not denying His power.
You are not denying Hisfinished work on the cross,
which says by His scribes.
You are not denying hisfinished work on the cross,
which says by his scribes youare healed, but rather you are
partnering with the Lord toprotect the temple that he's
(27:39):
given you, to care for thetemple that he's given you.
And if you've come out of thenew age or any kind of occultic
practices, I want you to knowthere is freedom in Christ.
The trauma that comes fromspiritual abuse, spiritual
deception, can cause you tosecond guess every decision,
(27:59):
especially when it comes tothings like your health and how
to care for yourself.
You don't want to fall backinto old ways of living.
You don't want to fall back onthings you've done before, but
you don't have to live in fearof every technique or tool for
wellness as long as you'rerooted in scripture, as long as
you're relying on the HolySpirit.
(28:20):
As long as you're trustingJesus above all else, you can
confidently and biblicallysteward the body that he's given
you.
Remember you're a new creationin Christ and he is with you in
every breath, every step andevery thought.
I want to thank you so much fortuning into this episode.
(28:43):
Can I pray for you before we go?
Heavenly Father, I just want tobless your name.
I want to thank you so much forcreating us in your image.
I want to thank you so much forcreating us in your image.
I want to thank you for thelistener.
I want to thank you forcreating her body, or his body,
fearfully, wonderfully, lord God, marvelously.
(29:04):
Lord, we come before youacknowledging you as holy, holy,
holy.
You are the healer and thelover of our souls.
We bless your name for thispeace which comes from your
presence alone.
Help us, holy God, to embracethe truth that caring for our
(29:25):
health is a form of stewardshipwhich honors you.
Remove from us every stronghold, every mental stronghold, every
spiritual stronghold that wouldsuggest otherwise.
Lord God, we silence right now,in the name of Jesus, every
deceiving spirit, every lyingspirit.
In the name of Jesus, we comeagainst the lies of the enemy
(29:48):
that whispers fears and doubtand try to create anxiety in us.
Oh God, we simply receive thepeace of God for our lives.
You have not given us a spiritof fear, but of love, power and
a sound mind, and with our soundmind, father, we say yes to you
.
As we navigate the challengesof our past and release those to
(30:10):
you, father, we seek to growdeep, deep, deep roots in our
faith.
Lord, grant us wisdom anddiscernment in the steps that we
ought to take and for those ofus, lord Jesus, who are learning
about our nervous system andways to steward this and to
steward our overall wellness oroverall well-being, lord, help
(30:33):
us.
Help us remember that ouridentity is not defined by our
ability to manage our health, but by the love and grace that
you extend to us through JesusChrist.
Lord, I ask for your peace tofill our hearts and minds right
now, but especially in momentsof anxiety and fear as they come
to taunt us, as they come upagainst us.
(30:54):
Lord, let us remember yourpeace, that anxiety, fear, doubt
is silenced, diminished.
Teach us, lord, to cast ourcares upon you, trusting that
you care for us deeply.
Help us to create healthyhabits that reflect our
commitment to honoring thetemple that you've given us,
(31:14):
lord.
We bless you.
We praise you In the powerfulname of Jesus, amen.
That's a wrap for this episode.
