John Holt (00:27):
Well, Kia ora koutou katoa, that's Maori for welcome
to you all, listening to this.
This is Sound a life with JohnHolt. I'm John. And this is a
real experiment. For me. It'sthe first podcast I have looked
to produce myself. I've tried afew things with other folks. And
I've really been looking for amedium to share ideas, and

(00:47):
really kind of keep folks up todate with what I'm doing.
Surprisingly, there's a bunchthat are interested in that. And
also across the range of thingsthat I do. I have a number of
people I meet every day, everymonth, who we share ideas, I
listen to what they're workingon. They listen to what I'm

(01:08):
working on. And we try andexchange value in terms of
things and sites and folks totalk to that could be really
useful for their journey, evenjust to grab some additional
perspective on the things thatare challenging challenging
them, and how they can actuallyaccelerate their organization

(01:28):
into the world. And in the last10 years, I've really been
focused on that from both arepurposeful in a profitable side
of things. So I call myself acapitalist for good. And that
was out of a discussion I hadwith a friend and someone I
value their perspective on abunch of things in the world,

(01:50):
coming from a journalism andeconomist background, and more
about that later. But really,it's just opening this up. I
tried it on substack. And I amgoing to put a lot of the
resources on substack. so thatfolks can see links in
references to the things that Italked about. I'm hoping to grab
some interesting guests to sharetheir stories and reflect on

(02:16):
some of the topics that I'mgoing to inject into this over
time, probably about every twoweeks, I just find as I'm sure a
lot of you have that everybodyhas grand plans to start a
podcast, that creating contentand getting it out there. But I
have found that is I know, others I've talked to incredibly

(02:38):
hard to really keep thingsmoving alongside all of the
other demands you have in yourlife around not just business,
of course, but family andbalance. So I'm trying this
because I got, I think onedecent post out on substack with
a original goal of findingsomething out there every week,

(03:02):
and just got busy. So I thinkthis is a great opportunity to
find some things out there thatare just much easier to produce
much easier to record on the flyand various places. And I'm
trialing and hopefully going tocome up subject to, I guess this
first trailer, episode two, letwo, as a platform seems really

(03:27):
easy to use, and it's web based.
And then moving that over to aplatform called Buzzsprout,
which is a great way that wouldsay, looking at the information
I found on the web, to actuallysyndicate the content, get it
out there onto the platforms, and including getting it back to

(03:48):
substack, where I'm going to hitmy written material, and also
basically tidying up the audioand making it sound quite
professional. So in terms of thetopics and why you might want to
come back here after thistrailer, I'm focused on ventures
that are generally powered bysoftware. I do have some
exceptions to that rule. I'm apassionate aviator and training,

(04:11):
I don't actually have a fullpilot's license. I have been
trying for some time with myfirst flight. It's even 10 years
of age. But I'm fascinated bythe concept of flight. And also
the commerciality of flying aswell, with respect to just what
we're going to see in the futureand our skies, both around
passenger transition, differenttypes of ways of getting people

(04:34):
from A to B, and also logisticsand supply chain, which is a
massive issue for the worldtoday. Given all the things
we've experienced over the lastfew years. I talk about
sustainability a lot. I'llemphasize as we go more about
why I think it really needs tobe a driver that sustainability
isn't a conversation that isseparated from building our

(04:56):
organizations. Let's actuallyintegrate it and So I'll talk a
lot about that startup element.
I'm starting a pension myselfwith a co founder, it's probably
my third major venture, depending on how you look at
things in life. And I'm reallyexcited about it, because I'm
building it, and I'll talk aboutit. And I'll share and I'll
really want to get theaudience's perspective on how to

(05:17):
build an organization that onlystarted last year 2021 with true
product, purpose, and profit, integrated and combined together
to a business with good one thatcan have an impact on a lot of
the societal and environmentalchange challenges that we're
facing. But also actuallygenerates revenue in profits

(05:39):
over time by doing that, so veryexcited personally about that.
Still very connected into theaviation industry. I'm a
director of the board of anorganization called UAS
Corporation of New Zealand. It'sa state owned enterprise. And
for those of you not in the NewZealand context, basically a
government owned butcommercially driven

(06:00):
organization. So that's a greatway for me to stay connected to
my heartland, lineage, I guess, which was an early life, quite a
prolonged career and corporateplanet. And so roles with
Hewlett Packard, IBM paintedvarious organizations gave me a

(06:21):
lot of institutional knowledgeand large company knowledge,
which I then took into startups, with my first startup co
founded, with Mike Cardin, stilla very good friend, and Mark
Hellyer, called sonar six, whichwe sold to a US publicly listed
company. So I'm telling you allthat to give you a bit of info

(06:42):
about why you might want tolisten to the small, and I hope
that you do, and join me for myfirst fully facade, I haven't
really decided which elements ofwhat I've described are going to
be in there. But perhaps youcould help me if you do come
across this, on the World WideWeb, and you're keen to generate
some regular revisits to this, you could actually help me

(07:06):
create that first episode in theseries, so that it's useful to
the things that you're workingon. So that's enough for a
trailer, I think it's probably along trailer. And I'm going to
test this and make sure that itall works through our process.
So that's from Ella to, and thenupload it to Buzzsprout and then
syndicated across the differentplatforms. And if that all

(07:29):
works, you will be listening tothis on some platform that
you're subscribed to. Andhopefully, again, you can give
me some feedback on what Ishould discuss in my first
official episode, in the firstseries of sound a life. And also
it would be really helpful toknow just because I'm confused
about this myself, how long Ishould make each episode, I was

(07:52):
blown away when we were doing apodcast for a venture I was
working on with another human.
Just how long people do listento podcasts. So any feedback you
have on there, just fire it intothe substack. If you've come to
me through that, or shoot a notethrough belly to that'll be

(08:13):
interesting to see as well interms of how we get feedback
through these podcastsplatforms. So life's a journey,
not a destination. And I amreally excited about getting out
to the world and having somechats, getting some feedback and
creating some value just withsharing ideas and links and
connections. Have a great restof your day. And please do join

(08:37):
me when you see that firstofficial episode, show up on the
same page here and sound alive.
