We revisit the cult classic Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, exploring its standing as a quintessential stoner comedy film and how it delivers a genuinely entertaining adventure despite relying on early 2000s frat boy humor.

• Two Asian-American roommates, Harold and Kumar, embark on an epic journey to satisfy their White Castle cravings after getting high
• The film tackles cultural stereotypes through Harold's experience as an overworked investment banker and Kumar's resistance to medical school expectations
• Celebrity cameos from Ryan Reynolds, Neil Patrick Harris, and Anthony Anderson deliver some of the movie's most memorable moments
• The absurd adventure includes scenes with raccoon attacks, prison breaks, and riding a cheetah while high
• Beyond crude humor, the film succeeds in showing genuine friendship as the characters support each other through increasingly bizarre scenarios
• The movie captures nostalgic early 2000s culture with references to DVR limitations and pre-streaming entertainment
• While not consistently laugh-out-loud funny, the film deserves its cult classic status for its adventurous spirit and food quest relatability

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, what's up all there, to all my bleaks all
across the globe, I appreciatey'all listening to the Tribe
Called Bleak podcast and, as youguys all know, we're in our 420
season and we're going to talkabout Harold and Kumar go to
White Castle.
This is season five, episodesix, and you know guys, man, man

(00:21):
, man, it's amazing when yourelive some of these 420 moments
.
As far as watching these moviesand everything and the comedy
hype that they can bring uh, Iwill say this as a disclaimer
for all the bleeps who haven'tseen this this is a cult classic
.
I wouldn't really necessarily alike comedy, comedy, big, big

(00:47):
hitter.
Again, as you guys always know,I always say comedy is very,
very subjective, but on theupside of this movie, I will say
that this is more of a greatadventure time just wilding out
like because you just don't knowwhat to expect.
Things aren't going, thesestoners away just for one common

(01:09):
goal and we all been there.
If you've experienced 420 iswhen you get fucking hungry and
you got the munchies and thismovie delivers on that golden
moment once you get that meal, that specific meal that you're
craving because you had somegood 420.
And it's like yo, that's it,that's the one, even if you got

(01:30):
to go way out the way just inorder to eat that and you're
craving that because you hadsome good 420, this is the movie
that you're going to want toexperience with your friends and
watch.
And I have to say, justwatching that comedy from that
era, um, again, I didn't laughas much, but I could appreciate

(01:51):
the adventure within itself andpretty much it's just a plot uh,
about you know two Asianroommates, um, one is in, you
know, med school.
The other one's in his career asan investment banker, uh Kumar,
who happens to be, you know, med school.
The other ones in his career asan investment banker, uh Kumar,
who happens to be, you know, indian descent.
I believe he's like firstgeneration, uh, within the

(02:11):
States.
And then, uh, you know, harold, who I believe is of Korean
descent.
Uh, he's, you know, firstgeneration as well.
It's interesting to see theirexperiences as far as, like you
know, we can call them geeks forsure, because they're
definitely that but just theirperspective on what they
experience.
And you know, one thing I cansay about this movie that I

(02:32):
really did enjoy was that, youknow, sometimes it's nice to see
other cultural experiences andtheir point of views, uh, you
know being a minority andeverything else, because you
know, one actor for all thebleaks y'all know, uh, you know
he plays uncle ruckus and hisname is because I gotta pull it
up real fast, so bear with megary anthony williams.

(03:01):
Uh, you know, I think this, this will, for that scene in
particular, hit me the hardestas far as his black experience.
He's definitely oblique, heplays that character, but his
voice is just so iconic becauseyou can still kind of hear the
uncle ruckus.
But I want to talk in greatdetail about this movie Because

(03:24):
one thing I totally forgot, uh,is a they had such a huge cast,
you know, when I re-watched thismovie and it's been years since
I've seen it, you know, and itwas definitely a great friday
night movie as far as fun, butyou know there's a lot of actors
who careers probably hasstarted from this and just

(03:45):
manifested and then flourishedafterwards.
Because you know, harold andKumar go to White Castle has
been become a cult classic and Iknow there's the sequels,
harold and Kumar Escape onGuantanamo Bay, and I think
Harold and Kumar's Christmas forthe bleaks out there.
You guys can definitely correctme on that because I'm
definitely going to researchmore into that as far as that

(04:05):
movie, but it was amazing to seesome of these you know actors
who I'm definitely going to goover as far as like the plot
itself, but pretty much you knowin the beginning you know you
have Harold and Kumar.
You know Kumar.
He's having an interview as faras getting to a med school and

(04:28):
he has great scores, but he'sdefinitely a stoner so he's not
really putting much effort intogetting into the school and his
reason behind that is because hejust wants his father to pay
his rent.
So that's the thing for Kumar.
Harold's character is aninvestment banker, very neat,
very clean cut.
He likes to be organized andunfortunately he gets slapped

(04:54):
with like playing with some work.
That's not even his and it'sthese two white guys who kind of
capitalize on him being Asianand there's that stereotype.
Well, he's Asian, so he likesto work hard.
He probably has no life and Ithought that was interesting how
they touched up on that.
And you know, once Harold getsoff from Perk and gives for all

(05:16):
the bleaks out there, I used tolive in the tri-state area so I
can relate to this scene andshout out to all my bleaks in
the tri-state area.
You guys know what I'm talkingabout.
If you're in like jersey or newyork, parking can be a bitch,
and so when harold is going homefrom work, there's these like
big assholes who fuck with them, taking a parking spot right in

(05:37):
front of the building.
Therefore he has to like drivelike 10 blocks away just to get
home.
And I will say, for all thebleeks out there, for you guys
who don't know, I decided towatch the unrated version I had
to see.
If you know, this version wasfar more I guess just more

(05:58):
engaging rather, but that wasmore so.
On the sexual content and let'sbe honest, harold and Kumar,
yes, it's a cult classic, it'smore 420 culture, but this movie
is more catered to, I would saymore to frat boy humor.
You know early 2000s.
So you know, if that's not yourthing, don't go on it too hard

(06:20):
as far as, like, that's comedythat you're not gonna relate to,
but just appreciate theadventure that they do go on,
both of those characters.
There's definitely some crudemoments and what I did enjoy is
that, you know, as a personwho's experienced 420 back years
ago, I've had some crazy 420moments as far as you know,

(06:42):
getting that bud and then havingthe munchies.
They get really stoned oncethey get home.
Then there's a moment where,okay, hey, we're craving that
food, we need to eat it.
What's it going to be?
Kumar has a great idea.
He's like no bro, I wantsomething that we haven't had in

(07:02):
a while, something that'sreally going to do it and really
hit the spot.
And I know for you bleaks outthere and for you non-bleaks out
there who've experienced 420y'all been there where y'all
have to have that particular isthat it.
You just scratch it for it forsomething to eat, to crave that
hunger from that 420 experience.
And what it was for them wasWhite Castle, and so you know

(07:25):
them living in New Jersey.
I guess they didn't get out toomuch of their area because that
White Castle was no longer inthe area that they originally
went to, and before they evenwent.
Harold he has like a crush inhis apartment building, so he's

(07:45):
really invested in this girlthat he wants to speak to.
But he's real nervous.
So he has some embarrassingmoments and Kumar calls him out
on there, which is pretty cool.
So you guys will get somechuckles out of that.
But there's some stoner guyswho are their neighbors down the
way, who happen to both beJewish, and so they seem really

(08:09):
cool and they're like, hey, youknow what guys like you guys
want to come with us, like it'stime to get something Like no,
no, no, no, no, we're going togo ahead and watch this movie
because Katie Holmes is going toexpose herself we can see her
breasts, you know and so that'swhat I mean by that college
white boy kind of frat humor.
But so it's a great movie butdefinitely has more of that

(08:31):
being the focus as far as thecomedy and delivery.
But I will say one thing thatwas just very nostalgic with
that movie and for the youngbleaks you guys didn't grow up
on this DVR, you know, or thelack of back in that time

(08:53):
because one of the things isthat there's a scene with the
two Jewish roommates and Iforget the characters names.
So for you bleaks out there, you guys will have to forgive me
and you know what?
Just for correction, I'll lookit up right now.
Right, so, seth and Andy, thoseare the two Jewish guys which
were, you know, passed itextremely well for this movie.

(09:14):
One of the things about thosecharacters is that one of them
steps away and there's thisscene where Katie Holmes is
about to expose herself and theroommate's like taking a hit on
the bong.
He's like, bro, you gotta hurryup, you gotta hurry up because
you're gonna miss it, you'regonna miss it, you're gonna miss
it.
And so you know, for the bleaksout there, for the young bleaks,

(09:35):
you know, if you missed amoment in television, that was
it.
There was no getting past that.
Like you were gonna miss it,you were gonna miss it.
And so I always told bleaks, you know, for the ones you guys
are very fortunate to havestreaming platform and streaming
services.
Because for the older bleaks, you guys know, you know if you
miss something you had to catchup on it.

(09:57):
If you didn't have DVR, youknow that's another thing to
consider.
But you know these were thingswhere you know, watching that
movie it really brought backjust that nostalgia.
And you know, one of the scenesI thought was interesting is
where they ran the toll whilethey're in transit to this white
castle and they go to north newjersey.

(10:18):
And for the bleaks out there, some of you guys who know, who
are aware of that area, can bepretty rough.
And there's a scene where, like, there's like two guys who
resemble them and they're like,oh yeah, they're two asian guys,
just like this.
And then they both get theirass beat and jump and so they
drive off because they're scared.
And you know, there's a scenewhere, like, it's like really

(10:38):
random, where kumar has to, likeyou know, relieve himself off
of the side of the road and somerandom guy comes up to him and
he's like, bro, there's like allthese bushes, why are you
coming next to me?
And it was like this awkwardmoment.
And a raccoon jumps in the carand, mind you, harold is having
to finish up this work that he'sbeen assigned from his
colleagues, uh, who are tryingto, you know, use him and

(11:01):
manipulate him, and they justraccoon attacks harold while
they're driving.
He thinks he has rabies.
And for you, bleaks out there,if you've seen the movie, there
is someone very iconic to thisday who was in this movie.
He had a small cameo and it'sRyan Reynolds.

(11:24):
And Ryan Reynolds, I'm going totell you, bleaks straight up.
When I was watching this movieagain, I definitely had seen
Deadpool tendencies with him,his acting in this specifically.
I would dare say.
If there was a way that theycould incorporate this, that
moment, those scenes with him init, that would be somewhat of

(11:47):
an origin story in some type ofMarvel universe, because him
playing a surgeon, where he'slike, you know, kumar does this
thing and he just happens to tryto get some you know medicinal
marijuana and he, you know, liesto his father and you know
there's Kumar doing all hisstuff and Harold is, you know,
completely oblivious to this buthe's just going through with

(12:08):
the moment.
He, you know, completelyoblivious to this, but he's just
going through with the momenthe.
You know Ryan Reynolds juststeals that scene, you know.
And one thing I will say aboutthis movie too is that I love
the cameos and some of the bigname actors.
Right, just to backtrack alittle bit too, because you know
, kind of all over the placewith this movie and that's how

(12:28):
the movie was.
Movie was too so for the bleaksout there.
You guys kind of have toforgive me as far as the
timeline on some of these scenes, but another actor who's in
there and to me this was more ofhis like funny prime time and I
spoke to one of my friendsabout this and she laughed
because she agreed AnthonyAnderson's in there and he's

(12:51):
working at some burger spot andthe thing that was so
interesting about this is thatthat's where the White Castle
used to be.
And so he's one of the cashierintercom guys who's like
speaking to Harold and Kumar andhe's like, hey, look, you know
I understand, but the nearestwhite castle is like way out in

(13:13):
Sherry Hill and you know, Ihighly recommend it over this
bullshit.
And so Anthony Anderson acts afool and starts like breaking
everything and burning, sayingburn this motherfucker down,
burn this motherfucker down.
And then he says, hey, I putsemen in the sauce.
I wouldn't get that if I wereyou guys.
He starts laughing and he says, hey, you know, I put semen in
the sauce.
I wouldn't get that if I wereyou guys.
He starts laughing.
But Anthony Anderson, let's beall honest, you know I'm happy

(13:33):
for that man's.
You know his career I wasinvolved in.
You know the opportunities he'sgetting on TV.
But to me Anthony Anderson wasfunny when he was fat.
All right, the fat AnthonyAnderson is the Anthony Anderson

(13:55):
that I grew up with andremember, because I think he
just had that more raw, visceralcomedy.
But you know I'm not happy forhimself.
You know he's lost weight andeverything.
But and I understand peoplemature and they want to have a
different image going forwardwithin their career.
But it's like when you thinkabout Chris Tucker as Smokey,
right, we know him, we love him.
That was the most iconiccharacter he's ever played
throughout cinema history.
But yet, you know, he's not thesame, at least for me I'll

(14:15):
speak for myself he's not thesame comedic presence as he once
was when he was a lot younger, playing Smokey, and so you know,
I felt that way about AnthonyAnderson, and so to see that it
was really really nice.
Now, another iconic actor thatwas in there was Neil Patrick

(14:38):
Harris, and they randomly pickhim up off the side of the road
and this guy was tripping onsome ecstasy.
You know, I think he's likelicking the leather seats of the
Toyota Camry and then he stealsthe damn car.
It's out of nowhere, andthere's like a scene where
they're at this gas station.

(14:59):
There are these white guys wholike trip out saying everything
has to be extreme and they'redoing some racial jokes and
whatnot, and there's like someredneck scene up in there where
this redneck pop arrest Haroldand Kumar for jaywalking.
But then again there was likenobody nobody driving on the
road and he just cop car appearsout of nowhere.
And then we get the infamousUncle Ruckus actor, gary Anthony

(15:23):
Williams, where he's in jailand he says they go, why are you
in here?
And he's like being Black, he'slike no, but why are you in
here being Black?
I didn't do anything.
He goes.
I accept the fact that you knowvarious circumstances happened
to me just because of me beingBlack, you know.
So he says I'm going to waitthis out, but I promise you I'm

(15:45):
going to get justice.
And justice was right.
Well, harold is incarcerated atthe time due to Kumar.
Kumar breaks into prison to gethim out and you know you get
some out of there and the policeare after him.
But at the same time, when theybreak out of prison, they

(16:05):
harass and beat Gary Anthony'scharacter, you know, and forget
about Harold and Kumar at thetime.
Another scene in that movie thatwas kind of like more way in
ish to me was when they went tothe college and they were trying

(16:27):
to get some marijuana and therewas supposed to be a like a
party.
And it's Harold's people, moreso the Asian community people
that he knows, and there's thesetwo girls, these two girls from
England.
They're like twin sisters andKumar's trying to hook up with
them and they're getting chasedaround the campus because one of

(16:48):
the security guards he smellsthe 420 all over the spot and so
he goes with Kumar and theyhide in a girl's bathroom and
the two twins come up in thereand then Harold I mean not
Harold but Kumar, he's like yothose are the twins of those two
baddies, like you know, I'mtrying to link up with, so we

(17:08):
definitely got to do something.
Two baddies, like you know, I'mtrying to like link up with, so
we definitely got to dosomething.
But they both go into thebathroom and let's just say it
definitely wasn't pleasant andit was like more of that white
chicks move like moment, likemove bitch, where you know the
toilet scene with both of themand they have like this
disgusting interaction.
So you bleak scout there youcan go ahead and use your
imagination of what I'm talkingabout, but that definitely

(17:31):
killed the mood.
But another thing and again Iam so sorry for all the bleaks
out there, I'm all over theplace.
But this movie, when I watchedit granted, it was only like 80
minutes a lot of shit happenedon their way to white castle.

(17:51):
Like I cannot tell you guysthat there's like I think the
last well, not the last, but oneof the other scenes in there
was where they get picked up bylike some inbred looking fucker
who has like these warts andboils all over his face.
He has this beautiful wife andthen him and his wife want to

(18:11):
have an orgy and they run up outof there.
So again, this movie it justreally hit me where I'm like
damn, not only did they have alot of iconic actors whose
careers have extremely, extremely blossomed I'm talking
like we all know Neil PatrickHarris if you watch how I Met

(18:32):
your Mother and other things, but especially Ryan Reynolds,
you know just to see him, and Ireally think Ryan Reynolds was
just being himself in that movie.
Honestly, nothing scripted, Ijust really think that's just
how he is.
But that was definitely Deadpoolright there in the making, and
so I have to give credit for himfor making that cameo as iconic
as it was for him being inthere.

(18:53):
But it was, like you know, forthe bleaks out there.
If you check this movie outagain, you're definitely going
to see the whole Deadpool momentas far as like him whispering,
saying awkward things, touchingon somebody, making them feel
uncomfortable, and just having aserious look and I was like,
okay.
So I don't know if ryan runnelsjust grabbed that and was like,

(19:16):
okay, this is how I'm going tobehave as deadpool and just read
some comic books and just madethat work.
But for all the bleaks outthere, if you watch that movie
not highly recommended and again, comedy subjective, but it
definitely just had some youknow, wild fun moments for fun
in there that I would tellanybody you would enjoy.

(19:36):
Um, so let me see here.
I would say my first impressionoverall with harold and kumar go
to white castle was that it wasdefinitely again, as I
mentioned earlier, more of afriday night, saturday night fun

(19:57):
adventure movie to watch.
Um, this is definitely more420-ish as far as that type of
comedy, that real crude,over-the-top adventurous comedy.
And then as far as it being acult classic, I'm sure it is in

(20:19):
its own right.
This is one of those movieswhere you can't forget it did
exceptionally well as far aslike Rotten Tomatoes.
So therefore I know it'sdefinitely a cult classic.
People have spoken about it andbefore I had gotten into 420
culture, that was a franchise Ihad heard but I had never seen,

(20:42):
you know.
So it was one of those thingswhere it was advertised a lot
with those movies.
But, you know, for all thebleaks out there, this is before
, like YouTube and all theseother social media platforms who
really, you know, do reviewsfor movies and whatnot, this is
now, I'm sure, just a great cultclassic in its own right for

(21:03):
people who, you know, want thatextreme sense of humor and that
type of funny delivery with, youknow, some of the most
outrageous scenarios.
Oh see, definitely gear foryoung adults, I would say
overall.
But one thing I can appreciatethe movie, appreciate about the
movie, is that, you know, Iwould say overall.

(21:23):
But one thing I can appreciateabout the movie is that, you
know I'm a foodie.
Okay, so, for all the bleaksout there, even if you're not
into 420, you know.
One thing I will also considerabout this movie is that, you
know, we've been there whilewe've craved something, you know
, no matter what time of day, what year it is, you know it's

(21:43):
like one of those meals whereit's like you know what hey, you
know I forgot about that spot Ispent a minute.
Since I've had that, you know, let me, let me hit that up.
And once they do have that meal, you know it hits just right
and it's like, from that pointon, everything goes their way.
You know, know, harold, he, youknow, has the confidence to

(22:05):
talk to the girl that he wantsand he stands up to these
bullies.
And there's a scene in theretoo, where they stand up to the
bullies up around theirapartment complex and they stole
.
They stole their car, but youknow where they enjoyed their
white castle when they were likeyo, that hit the spot.
You know, I definitelyunderstand that Sometimes you

(22:25):
just have that meal where it'slike yo, that's it, that was
right, right there.
You know it did that.
And so for the bleaks out there, for all my foodies, y'all
could definitely understandwhere I'm coming from with that,
because you know whether youknow you like Texas fries with
brisket or a cheesesteak, orsushi or tacos or something you

(22:47):
know, whatever it is.
You know we all have thatmoment where you just sit back
and like now, like y'all everhad that meal, where y'all just
reminisce over it because it hitthat good you know and I'm not
even talking about like hungeris the best spice like it was
just right.
That's the type of moment inHarold and Kumar go to White
Castle towards the end of theget and that's all compliments

(23:08):
to Neil Patrick Harris, becausehe stole their car.
They randomly run into this guyat the White Castle and he pays
for the meal after he sobers upand he tells him it was like
hey, look man, I left some lovethings on your uh you.
And he tells him like hey lookman, I left some love things on
your camera.
So just so you're aware.
But at that moment they didn'teven care because they were just
so happy to have the food andenjoy it, and so that's just one

(23:32):
of those things I reallyappreciated about that comedy is
that, you know, it wasrelatable as far as the food
aspect and the adventure, definitely over the top, because
I don't know anybody, you knowwho's riding cheetahs and
getting them high, because thatwas another thing too.
There was like a cheetah, theygot high, they definitely put
them on with some butt and theyrode them and then they did a

(23:53):
hang glide session.
So again, you know, I'm tryingto recollect as much as I can as
far as this movie, but therewas just so many fucking scenes
and wild moments in here where Iwas like, okay, this is
definitely, definitely somethingwhere if you just want over the

(24:15):
top adventures doesn't make anydamn sense and have a great
time with it.
This is definitely, definitelythat stoner movie for the blinks
out there.
You know, you guys could tellme, is that what you guys
appreciate about certain stonermovies?
Because you know, um, you know, when it comes to like you know,

(24:35):
friday whole classic, there wassome serious aspects in there
too which I could appreciatefrom ice cube that he put in
there, you know.
And again, comedy subjective,so that could be more relatable
for as far as, like the blackexperience to a degree, and so,
even though it's like that's amovie love all over the world,

(24:56):
but you know, it's morerelatable to us in that sense.
But you know, when it comes toharold and kumar go to white
castle, it was one of thosemovies where I had to remind
myself, I'm like, oh, you know, this is very different but still
relatable in some ways, butstill funny all at the same time
, which I thoroughly, thoroughlyenjoyed.

(25:17):
And for the bleaks out there, you know, I would definitely
recommend it.
I don't know if this is a moviethat's leapt on in the world of
420, but I doubt it.
I think it's one of thosethings where now it's just a
cult classic and people know butprobably don't speak about too
much.
And you know, for the bleaksout there, you know how I have

(25:41):
to end it.
If Harold and Kumar go to WhiteCastle was a strain of bud
there.
You know how I have to end it.
If Harold and Kumar go to WhiteCastle was a strain of bud, how
many puffs would I have to puffon it before passing it off to
someone else?
I'm going to say three and ahalf.
It didn't hit as far as thecomedy that I would like to make
me laugh real hard because Ibelieve they, you know, relied
on so much as far as the anticsand the over-the-top and crazy

(26:06):
things that happen in thatuniverse.
But I can appreciate theadventure itself, you know,
seeing the scenarios that theyget themselves into and how they
get themselves out of that.
And that's one thing I canappreciate about, you know,
harold and Kumar go to WhiteCastle is that it really
delivered on those moments whereit's like man, you know, I know

(26:30):
that shit wouldn't happen, butit was funny as hell to watch
and to see their souls get outof that and you know they're
definitely best friends.
They definitely have thatsupport and love for each other.
Uh, there were some momentswhere, you know, even kumar, he
went over the top and heapologized to errol, like, hey,
you know what that's my bad, letme go ahead and like, fix that,
let's get you back home.
And so I appreciate that.

(26:52):
That didn't compromise theirfriendship and they were
definitely there for each other.
But you know, for all the bleaksout there, you know I would

Boysober

Boysober

Have you ever wondered what life might be like if you stopped worrying about being wanted, and focused on understanding what you actually want? That was the question Hope Woodard asked herself after a string of situationships inspired her to take a break from sex and dating. She went "boysober," a personal concept that sparked a global movement among women looking to prioritize themselves over men. Now, Hope is looking to expand the ways we explore our relationship to relationships. Taking a bold, unfiltered look into modern love, romance, and self-discovery, Boysober will dive into messy stories about dating, sex, love, friendship, and breaking generational patterns—all with humor, vulnerability, and a fresh perspective.
