There are a lot of traditions we follow just simply because. Living in America, we tend to just say this is how we’ve always done things ga. But as we get older, if we stop to think for a moment, some things don’t really make sense as much sense as when the sold it to us.

An ongoing corporate, societal and parent-child debate has been college. To go or not to go? Is it a necessity or just status? Some people go to college because the legacy of their families dictates so. It’s a sense of pride. But does the financial burden outweigh the benefits? With student loan debt crippling some households, while the government does not seem to be hurting by not receiving reimbursements, when will a real conversation be had to rethink higher education?

Let’s be clear. No one wants a surgeon who went to YouTube university to learn about appendectomies. And we’ve seen how completely wrong backyard butcher shops can go when people decide to let their neighbors plump the booties or lips. So there’s definitely a place for higher learning institutions. But to consider the accounting apprentice making $55k a year and having to pay back $500 a linen while trying to save to buy a home, have a social life and eat out a few times a month, the scales seem to be unbalanced.

As we approach another graduation season, kudos to all the graduates who have shown discipline, determination, and dedication to make it to walk across the stage. May your hassle be flipped and your live out your wildest dreams. For those considering next steps, our only hope is you find your path to prosperity without the pressure of  people’s personal agendas and with your own purpose in mind.
