(00:48):
, the overwhelmed wanderer andmuch more.
Let's figure out which BlackFriday ADHD shopper you are and
how to have fun but not fallinto a pit of despair and regret
the next week when you look atyour credit card.
Welcome back to the channel andpodcast.

(01:09):
Leave a review on Apple.
Send me some dopamine.
I would appreciate it, but ifyou don't, oh well, I don't
really care.
Just kidding, I do.
I vote that you do leave areview and send me that dopamine
.
So let's talk about it.
Black Friday is in two days andunfortunately the timing of this
video might be too late if youlike your Black Friday shopping

(01:30):
to be done during theever-extending period of time
that retailers seem to considerBlack Friday.
I thought Black Friday was oneday, apparently it's three weeks
, but nonetheless the best dealsare usually on Friday itself,
and so, rather than yell at youand tell you that you should
just not go and you've doneenough Black Friday shopping
every single day of this year sofar, I'm gonna talk to you

(01:52):
about the different Black Fridayshopping personas, that people
with ADHD and really everyone, but with all state ADHD years.
We take on these personas whenit comes to shopping all the
time, and it's relentless, andit's not like our neurotypical
friends where it's just we canjust put on the persona for one

(02:14):
day and it goes away forever.
No, we have to deal with it allthe time, and so let's just
talk about this and it's gonnabe fun.
So the first one we're gonnatalk about is the pure let loose
dopamine.
Chasing impulses are totallyunchecked splurger.
Usually this ADHD year won'treally be readily admitting or

(02:35):
aware or embracing this trait, but it's when, whether you're in
the store or on Amazon, browsing or browsing, it results
in quite a lot of trips to thecounter, to the cashier or to
the click buy now button, andyou don't do a whole lot of you
know, if any slowing down andconsidering the true need or

(02:59):
value of this thing, but youjust buy it anyways.
You get trapped, basically, ina dopamine high that finally
ends when your brain literallyhas no choice but to start
guilting and shaming you intostopping, because otherwise you
just would never stop.
And if this is you, my adviceis to filter your Amazon deals

(03:20):
by the highest percentage offfirst, so you're looking at the
absolute best deals and actuallysaving some money on the things
that you know you're gonna buyone way or the other.
And if you are the onlineversion of this, like I just
kind of was alluding to, thentell yourself this year you're
going to the store and you'regonna get into the mirror and
repeat 50 times to yourself thatyou are not going to buy

(03:44):
everything.
You are going to repeat toyourself in the mirror that you
are only going to make purchasesin stores, not online, and 50%
off at least.
Okay, that's what I want you totry and do.
You can do it, I believe in you, I have faith and I guess we

(04:05):
are going to.
So next we have the overwhelmedwanderer.
You always go to the mall orwherever you go, but you almost
always kind of regret it.
You may go with a friend orfamily member, almost like a

(04:28):
tradition, but every time thecrowds, the noise, the
information and sales and stuffoverload and flame your sensory
sensitivities and you start justbuying things more out of a
place of like desperation tomomentarily escape the chaos and
the anxiety provokingenvironment that you are in.

(04:49):
And so you are walking aroundoverly crowded spaces and you're
just like, nah, but I'm doingit anyway.
So if this is, you try notgoing or propose a different
tradition to your friend orfamily on Black Friday, or maybe
you just propose going at theleast busy time, which is which

(05:11):
a cursory Google search istelling you that it's at 2am,
which that in and of itselfsounds quite overwhelming.
So if those don't work, wellthen you're just taking one for
the team yet again, because thethought of disappointing someone
and telling them that you'renot going to go this year is
just too much for you to handleanyway.

(05:31):
So you suck it up and you getthrough it, and so be it.
That might be have to be.
That might have to be the wayit goes for you.
So next up is the hyper focusedhunter.
You are frugal at heart, but nothat Black Friday is your day
to let loose, but the thrill ofthe good deal is really what is
exciting and motivating you.

(05:51):
So you do go and you findwhether it's online or in the
store you go to just to find thebest deals on things you either
really want or just sparkenough interest that the deal
itself overrides any semblanceof rationality and you pull the
trigger, believing that youcrushed Black Friday with all

(06:12):
these good deals you got.
But of course, soon enough themath will hit you and you will
realize that 70% off $200 is $60.
But if you times that by 15,it's still almost 1000 bucks.
Hey, but don't let the mathbring you down too much, because
you should still be proud ofthe frugal fueled hunter nature

(06:35):
that you have, because long term, this is a character trait that
is going to serve you well downthe line.
If this is you do, 50 mirroraffirmations of the total amount
that you are willing to spend, and then call it quits when you
go like a hundred bucks overthat or something, because we
all know you'll go a little bitover that.

(06:56):
So next we have the overanalyzer deal analyst.
You know what you want and youhave been prepping for weeks,
finding the best deals for thebigger ticket things that you've
been wanting and waiting for.
You've made lists, you'vebookmarked pages, you've been
patiently awaiting this big day, this big moment in time.

(07:17):
But when it finally comes tomake the move, paralysis by
analysis heats up, it kicks inand you spend hours comparing
and contrasting and deliberatingover the finest details that
really don't matter at all onthe grand scheme of things, but
you just get stuck on the twodifferent versions of the same

(07:38):
thing.
One is a less of a good deal, but it's the one you really want
.
One's a bigger deal, but therewould be trade offs.
Oh my goodness, it's justoverwhelming.
And when you finally do pull thetrigger, you actually feel
defeated, like you probablydidn't make the right choice.
You feel guilt, you feel like,oh my gosh, like did I really do
the right thing?

(07:59):
And you just relieve thatstress by doing some casual
browsing and next thing, youknow, you morph into that
dopamine uh spender, thedopamine uh fueled impulsive
person that we talked about inthe beginning.
And then you take on that newpersona and you just spend the
next hour clicking and buyingstuff as therapy for the trauma
that you've been through.

(08:19):
I am joking, but listen, it's,it's a.
It's a reality that a lot of usdo deal with the fact.
That is kind of like where Iwould line up.
Honestly, it would be me.
So if this is you, let go of thedesire to have the best,
perfect, most well researchedchoice and just buy the dang
thing.
Pat yourself on the back forbeing such a studious shopper.

(08:40):
If you have to return it andyou want the other one, then do
that.
Just move on with your life andavoid the therapy, shopping,
stress relieving part of thiswhole story.
So, um, next up, next up, wehave the regretful rusher.

(09:01):
You don't got time for thisBlack Friday thing.
Your crazy ADHD brain isalready tied up with a thousand
other things.
But FOMO kicks in and you feellike you.
But FOMO kicks in and you feellike you should.

(09:23):
Why should everyone else getall these great deals and not me
?
You feel suddenly like it isnow or never.
I have to do this now or I'llnever get a good deal.
You have made no plans, youhave no idea what you need, but
here you are, up late at nightfrantically searching the web
for the deals before they expireand you just start buying stuff
without any thought orcontemplation Contemplation of

(09:46):
whether you need it or trulydesire this, or if it's gonna
truly bring value to you.
But the adrenaline and thesurging dopamine locks you into
a marathon of buying.
You are in a movable blob onthe bed and you were just buying
.
And you wake up the next dayand feel that tidal wave of
O'Crap, guilt, regret.
This fills your brain waves, and if this is, you, make the

(10:09):
returns you got to make and makethe situation right.
You really don't got time forthis consumer's BS, anyway.
So return the stuff and staybusy with the things that
clearly are more important toyou.
That's my advice for you, mrRusher.
Now, finally, we end with theadventurous browser.
You are the traditionalist ADHDor and you love the in-store

(10:31):
experience, the tactileexperience of feeling your
purchases and Bringing them homethe same day.
You love the treasure hunt, thesurprises, the novelty and the
pure blissful stimulation thatyou get from hopping from store
to store.
You are someone who probablydoesn't even really have a
terrible spending problemoutside of these seasonal events

(10:51):
, but your dopamine levels arelinked to the rotation of them,
earth, the tilt of the earth, and when the days get shorter,
your brain is subconsciouslyprepping like it is shopping, it
is browsing season.
So you are Ready for thatfruitful day of treasure hunting
and and collect in collectingof novel, stimulating and

(11:12):
exciting products that you neverreally knew you would want
Until you saw them shining onthe display with a big fat 50%
off sticker above it and you buya few things.
However, I Gotta tell you thisperson, I see them kind of as
getting the thrill from the, theexperience of the day and not

(11:33):
needing to buy stuff.
Just, you're, you'd be theperson that picks up the thing,
takes it to the counter, is likeyou know what.
I just kind of mentally boughtit, I'm good, and you put it
back and you move on for thenext treasure hunt, fake
simulation, purchase ofsomething, and you come home.
You may have gone a few things, you didn't break the bank, you
feel good, that is it.
And if that's you, I've got noadvice because you're killing it

(11:55):
.
That is how you should do it.
It's meant to be a day you go tothe stores.
You don't got a shop online.
Go to the store, pick things up, take it to the counter, say,
and don't need it.
Already kind of bothered in mymind and I'm done so and there
you have it, the ADHD blackFriday shopping personas.
Which persona are you?
Leave me a comment below, sendme an email if you're listening

(12:18):
to the podcast, tell me whichADHD shopping persona you most
fit into.
You may be fitting into one ofthem neatly.
You may be a blend of one ofthem.
I kind of elaborated on them inways that may not make sense to
you.
It could be a mix of them.
You could have multiple BlackFriday shopping personality
disorder, for all we know.
You could feel like you're thisway one day and next year

(12:38):
You're completely different.
This is just the ADHD lot thatwe've been given in life.
I hope you enjoyed this happyshopping.
This was all for fun.
Don't take it too serious.
We'll talk again soon and andstay fun.
