Manny (00:00):
What's going on, fam?
Welcome to the Adonime Podcast, where we watch anime with the
redemptive eyes of a Christianbeliever.
My name is Manny, and todaywe're going to be doing a season
(00:23):
review, right?
I'm going to be splitting theepisode between spoiler-free and
a spoiler section.
And it's a season one review ofthe new anime Wistoria Wand and
Sword.
I'm going to be talking aboutwhat this anime is about, the
synopsis, and then I'm going toget into the material, the
content of the anime.
(00:44):
And I'll start off with thenon-spoiler content for you guys
that might be consideringwatching this anime in the
future or are probably watchingit right now.
And then I'll make sure to letyou guys know once I start the
spoiler section of this episode.
So let's get right into it.
Before we dive into thebreakdown with some deep
(01:05):
reflections, let me give you aquick snapshot of what Wistoria
1 and Sword is all about, right?
So in this world, humanity wasonce under serious threat from
these mysterious enemies, andthey were called the Celestial
Hosts.
And these are some straight upterrifying beings, right?
the evil in this world.
(01:26):
But there were these fivelegendary mages that teamed up
and they defeated thesecelestial hosts.
So to keep those things fromever coming back, these mages,
also known as the Magia Vander, they created this dome.
It's like a magical dome.
And they built a tower tocontain these celestial hosts.
(01:48):
So with every generation, thefive strongest mages are chosen
to guard the dome from the topof what's called the wizard's
tower, right?
So this is where it getsinteresting.
This is where we meet our maincharacter, Will Serfort, which
is a six-year student at a magicacademy.
So the interesting thing abouthim is that he can't use magic
(02:12):
at all, at all.
So in a magic school, that'skind of a big deal.
So he's constantly looked downon by the other students and
some of the teachers.
But here's the twist aboutWill.
Will is physically gifted.
So while everyone else iscasting spells, Will's out here
(02:35):
swinging a sword, defeatingmonsters and surviving off
basically his pure grit skilland some magical items that he
can actually use.
But he only has one goal.
to fulfill a childhood promisethat he made to his best friend
named El Faria, who actuallybecame one of the Magia Vander
(02:58):
years ago.
And they both promised eachother as children to climb the
wizard's tower together.
And no matter how much the oddsare stacked against Will, he
always refuses to give up onthat dream.
So yeah, it's kind of a magicalunderdog story with heart,
action, And a lot to chew onwhen it comes to courage,
(03:21):
perseverance, and identity.
So it's very interesting.
So a couple of details aboutthis anime.
It premiered in the summer of2024.
It is rated PG-13.
And the studios who made it areActus and Bandai Namco
Pictures.
(03:41):
So let's get into the ChristianGuide categories.
And we'll start off with thefirst category, which is sex and
nudity.
So one thing I caught is thatWill is shirtless in a scene.
Not a huge deal, not sexual atall.
And there is an indirectmention of private areas.
(04:02):
And there's a scene with twoguys bathing together.
But it's not explicit.
It's actually pretty casual.
Not anything...
Nothing sexual or nothing likethat.
And you can't see anything.
Joe's only a mention.
And you just know that they'rebathing together, but it's not
(04:24):
together together.
If you know what I mean.
So that's about it.
It doesn't have anything elseother than that.
So the second category, violence and gore.
Okay, this show is prettybloody, pretty gory.
There are body parts being cutapart.
so it can be it can be prettyintense in that sense okay so
(04:48):
watch out for that the thirdcategory is profanity there's
really nothing no profanity atall the fourth category drugs
and alcohol none whatsoever andthe fifth and last category is
scary scenes well the scarierscenes were the monsters so some
(05:08):
of the monsters here uh maybefor younger viewers will find it
a little scary but it's notanything too bad so let's keep
going with the positive andnegative points that i saw in
this anime and all of thesepoints are going to be
non-spoiler so i'll let you guysknow once i hit the spoiler the
spoiler section okay so some ofthe positive points well the
(05:30):
mages in this story are heroesthat fight against darkness
right so this is your this is aclassic good versus evil setup
Right.
So it's portraying characterswho stand up against threats to
humanity.
Right.
So this is something very goodto appreciate.
Another positive point I sawwas helping your enemies.
(05:54):
Okay.
So this is actually a reallybig theme.
And it's not helping yourenemies in the sense of helping
them mercifully, like havingmercy on your enemies when they
are in their pit, in the bottomof their...
their life.
So this is, this is a big thingthat's echoed, um, in this
(06:16):
anime.
And that's also echoed in, um,in the Bible for us Christians,
right?
As the book of Matthew chapterfive, verse 44, it says, love
your enemies and pray for thosewho persecute you.
Right?
So it's a reminder of the powerof mercy and second chances.
And I really appreciate thatabout this anime.
(06:39):
Okay.
So another positive point Ifound was the point of doing
your best for love's sake,right?
So Will has that goal, right?
As we mentioned in thesynopsis, to get to the top of
the tower with Elfaria.
And he loves her, right?
(07:02):
He...
wants to fulfill that for her.
So everything that he is doing,he's trying to make it work
without having any magic.
And he's doing it because heloves her.
So he's motivated by love, which reminds us of 1
Corinthians 16, verse 14.
Let all that you do be done inlove.
(07:25):
And not just will, but thereare several characters that are
motivated by love, whether it'sfriends or goals or personal
promises like we just mentionedthis is this is a really good
point that the anime makes okayand then the last positive point
i'm going to share is thatdiscrimination is challenged in
(07:48):
this anime right so there is aclear moment where
discrimination towards in thiscase dwarves right doors are
like the low the low in this inthis world and when they're
being discriminated against bysome students of the school it's
(08:08):
portrayed as wrong and it'srebuked right and and i love
that you know it's important forus to remember okay there um
there could be some bad sceneshappening but is the anime
telling us that it's okay to dothat or is it going against that
is it condemning that and thisis definitely condemning
(08:28):
discrimination right the book ofjames chapter 2 verse 9 tells
us if you show favoritism yousin and are convicted by the law
as lawbreakers okay so it'svery important and it's a very
important lesson that i reallyappreciate about this anime too
so let's go let's get into thenegative points right still
(08:52):
non-spoiler don't worry the onenegative point i have here is
the magic and the incantationsokay so Obviously, this is a big
part of the world, and itincludes fantasy-style
spellcasting, right?
And the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 18, verses 10 through
(09:14):
12, it warns us about real-worldsorcery, right?
Let no one be found among youwho practices divination or
sorcery, okay?
So while this shows magic isfictional, Right?
It's purely fictional.
It's not real.
It's not based on realincantations.
(09:36):
It's not based on real sorcery.
And it's tied to the worldbuilding of this anime.
We have to use discernment.
Okay?
If you feel convicted, prayabout whether it's wise to watch
this show.
Okay?
Some people might not find itcomfortable.
Some people can accept thatit's fictional, fantasy.
(09:58):
Right?
And it doesn't bother them.
As long as we understand thatin the real world, this is
wrong.
We don't dive into sorcery.
We don't dive into divination.
None of that.
Okay?
So that's the one negativepoint that I can share that has
(10:18):
no spoilers.
So from here, if you're justhere for the spoiler-free heads
up, yes, I'd say Wistoria is awatchable pick for Christians.
Who are okay with fantasyelements.
And a bit of action heavyviolence.
And it has.
Some interesting.
Positive points that we canlearn from.
(10:39):
That are actually verybiblical.
Okay.
So now.
For those of y'all who want togo deeper.
This is now jumping into thespoiler section.
So.
I warned you.
And you can come back to thislater.
Once you watch the rest of it.
Okay so.
positive points from here,okay?
(11:02):
We see Sion's bowling revealinghis insecurity and desire to be
seen, right?
So Sion is one of the studentswho is in this competition, in
the tournament that they aredoing towards the end of the
season.
(11:22):
And And he's been the bullythroughout most of the anime.
And then he's confronted withit, right?
Once he sees Will and howstrong Will is and how merciful
he is towards him, we see a bitof his backstory where he has
(11:46):
this insecurity, right?
And because of that insecurity,he wants to be seen by others.
So he tries to put down otherpeople and make himself seem
better, better than everybodyelse.
So it's actually a beautifulmoment for Sion where he's being
(12:06):
redeemed.
He's recognizing his mistakes,right?
And it's like his arrogancemasks his pain, right?
And it reminds us how prideoften covers brokenness.
But if we let those things go,in a practical sense, if we let
(12:27):
those things go and we presentthem before God and we humble
ourselves, we can receive mercy.
We can receive freedom fromthat.
The book of Galatians, chapter6, verse 3.
If anyone thinks they aresomething when they are not,
they deceive themselves.
Okay?
So I thought that was a reallygood positive point that we
(12:52):
could get from this anime.
Another positive point I sawwas Will's unwavering courage.
So throughout this whole anime, season one, we see how Will is
mocked.
He's pushed aside because helacks magic.
So everyone looks down on him.
(13:14):
But even then, Will has thisunwavering courage.
He stays focused on hismission.
He wants to make the rightdecision regardless of
everything that's going onaround him.
And this is beautiful.
And it reminded me of Galatians6, verse 9.
(13:36):
Let us not grow weary of doinggood, for in due season we will
reap if we do not give up.
beautiful beautiful and andit's a great reminder for us
when we live our livesrighteously before god to not
let other people around us orsituations around us put us down
(14:00):
but instead stay focused onchrist right stay focused on
christ stay focused on livingfor him stay focused on the
mission remembering who you'redoing this for you're doing this
for your savior the person whodied for you on the cross, who
gave his life for you.
And because he gave his lifefor us, we can move forward.
(14:21):
We can get through this and Godwill be with us.
Amen.
Another positive point I sawwas Wigdahl's redemption arc.
So Wigdahl is another studentthat took a lot of pride in his
abilities, right?
But only on the surface.
(14:43):
So this guy is one of the topstudents who uses magic very
well or whatever, or at leastthat's the way he likes to make
it seem.
But in reality, we see part ofhis backstory where he admits
that he felt worthless and hetook it out on others to hide
his flaws.
And he actually humbleshimself.
(15:05):
He realizes his mistake and histurnaround is powerful.
Okay, much like science.
And it reminded me of Jameschapter four, verse 10.
Humble yourselves before theLord and he will lift you up.
Right?
This was a beautiful, beautifulmoment.
And I think we can reallyappreciate that.
(15:28):
Another positive thing I foundwas, and this is a quote from
Will that says, we're notgeniuses.
So if we don't make mistakes,we'll never move forward.
So this is where they have thebig battle towards the end of
the first season.
(15:49):
They have the big battleagainst this crazy strong
monster.
And they're afraid.
They're afraid in this momentto fight.
And I really like this quotebecause it's humbling and it
reminds us that we're human.
(16:09):
Here he's saying we're notgeniuses.
But in a sense, I say we'rehuman.
So if we don't make mistakes,we'll never move forward.
And what does that mean?
Or at least the way that Ithink we can take it is we have
to understand that we're human.
And though Christ lives in us,right?
(16:32):
Christ is perfect.
And he lives in us.
We have perfection in us.
And through the Holy Spirit, wecan...
obey the will of God in perfectharmony with him.
But we're human and we're goingto make mistakes.
And being afraid of makingmistakes sometimes can hold us
back from living for God freely, right?
(16:57):
God has set us free from sin, from shame.
And because of that, we canlive freely and joyfully before
God.
So I think this was greatbecause we have to get rid of
the fear of making mistakes.
We have to understand we arehuman.
We will make mistakes, but wehave to move forward.
(17:20):
We have to move forward.
As long as we are in sync withGod and His Holy Spirit that
guides us, yes, sometimes we aregoing to get it wrong, but as
long as God is guiding us andour hearts are clean before him
and our intentions, God is goingto guide as well.
(17:42):
He is a good father and he'sgoing to guide as well.
So even in spite of mymistakes, God is going to work
everything out for good.
And we have to remember that.
And that's a great quote.
I love that quote.
Another positive point I sawwas, we're not beginning to
respect will, right?
So as we had kind of mentioned, will shows mercy.
(18:05):
instead of revenge to Wignall,right?
Wignall is one of the strongestmages, but actually felt pretty
worthless.
And because of Will's mercy, itinspired Wignall to change.
And it's a moving picture ofgrace in action, right?
(18:25):
How having mercy on our enemiescan actually convert them, can
actually soften their hearts,right?
And it's a great picture of howGod loves us, right?
Even though we were enemies ofhim, even though we were enemies
of God, God had mercy on us.
And because of that, we canlove him even more because what
(18:50):
a wonderful love that is thatyou would love your enemies.
It's incredible.
So that was a great picture ofgrace.
And then the final positivepoint I saw here, and you're
noticing there's a lot ofpositive points.
But this is the final one I'mgoing to share.
It's Will's driving fear,right?
(19:10):
The fear that drives Will islosing others, not death.
So this is one of my favoriteparts of this anime, one of my
favorite lessons, right?
So when they are fighting thisenemy towards the end of the
season one, and...
(19:33):
And everybody is afraid andscared that they're about to
die.
And they notice that Will iscontinuing to fight.
And it's almost like as if he'snot scared.
And they ask him, where is thatcoming from?
How are you not scared?
And he says, I am.
But he is not afraid of dying.
(19:55):
He is afraid of dying.
But he is more afraid of losingothers.
Of losing others that theywould die.
man so his courage comes fromlove doesn't come from pride no
it comes from losing others he'smore afraid of running from his
(20:17):
friends than facing danger thatwas beautiful that was a great
picture of loving your friendsright it reminds me of john
chapter 15 verse 13.
Greater love has no one thanthis to lay down one's life for
(20:38):
one's friends.
That was a great picture ofthat.
It was beautiful, beautiful.
That was one of my favoritemoments of the anime.
I was like, Will, that's theman.
That's the guy right there.
So yeah, so now to the negativepoints.
I have no more.
I have no negative points up tothis point.
So in reality, the onlynegative point out of this whole
(21:01):
anime that I got were the...
uh the magic incantations uhthe gory might be a bit much for
for some people for youngerviewers um but definitely the
magic incantations it could toneit down just a tiny bit and
that's the only negative pointthat i have and considering all
(21:23):
of that considering all of thatthe the final ranking that i'm
giving this anime the season onefor wistoria wand and sword is
a 9 out of 10 okay so what couldhave made it a 10 the magic and
incantations that is that isthe one flaw that i see from
(21:45):
this anime other than thatthere's a lot to love here
there's redemption there'sperseverance there's humility
sacrificial love those are allgodly qualities we can
definitely learn from that candefinitely inspire us but again
(22:06):
it does come with a fantasysetting and that includes some
magic some violent and gorymoments um we just have to be
mindful of that right so if thatstuff doesn't bother you if we
can be mature and understandokay this I will not dive into
(22:28):
this in real life.
I will take it as a fantasysetting.
Then I think there's a lot toenjoy here.
There's a lot to love and learnfrom here.
So that's it.
Let me know what you guysthink.
