Previously on Adventures on Awe Island, still uncertain about
what was damaged in the fire at the library, Marie, JJ and
Christian focused on finding theoldest on this island home that
the third Riddle is referencing. They assumed it was a building,
but what if it really is something else?
(00:27):
Welcome to adventures on Awe Island.
Chapter 5. Dragon Part 1.
By lunch the next day, Marie wasbursting at the seams.
(00:48):
She was so eager to talk to JJ and Christian.
After quick hellos at their favorite lunch spot in the
cafeteria, Christian launched right into conversation.
So when can your dad take us to the civic building?
He asked. Marie blinked.
She had completely forgotten about their plan to keep
checking the oldest buildings onAwe Island.
(01:10):
Her mind had been so full of ideas about Dragon that she
hadn't given the civic building another thought.
Oh, right. Marie said, bringing out her
detective's journal. She kept it with her at all
Times Now, in case she wanted toreference her notes or add more
dates to her notable date list. My dad can give us a ride
(01:32):
tomorrow morning. The civic building is only open
until noon, so we'd have to go early, Jay.
Jay sighed and shook her head. I can't go.
I've got a robotics club building session for the
upcoming competition. We've named our bot
Dragnipotence, which means All Powerful Dragon.
(01:53):
The name was my idea. She added proudly.
Sweet name. Kristen said admiringly.
Marie nodded in agreement. Her eyes sparkled as she said.
Speaking of Dragons, JJ saw the excitement in Marie's expression
and raised an eyebrow. Yeah, last night I had another
(02:16):
idea about the clue. Marie continued.
This sounds big. JJ said dramatically, and Marie
didn't need any more invitation.I think it might be.
She replied breathlessly. I honestly can't believe none of
us thought of this sooner. What?
Stop stalling and tell us. Christian prompted her
(02:39):
impatiently. Marie grinned and leaned
forward. Well, I don't think the oldest
on this island home is a building in town.
I mean, there are a lot of things on the island that have
been here longer than our buildings.
That's true. JJ said.
Then what do you think it is? Well, I'm not sure exactly.
(03:02):
Marie admitted. But since we are looking for the
symbol that is on both of the dragon clues, we have the stuffy
and the figurine. I think the oldest thing has
something to do with dragon. But isn't dragon really young?
JJ replied. I always see them playing with
(03:23):
the little kids. I know.
But Marie hesitated. What seemed like such a good
idea last night now seemed less likely still.
She tried to make her .1 more time.
But we're supposed to be lookingfor the symbol.
The symbol is the key, remember, and the only place we've seen it
(03:45):
so far is on Safos's handkerchief and ring, and on
the 2 dragon clues, the stuffy and the figurine.
We don't know where Safos is anymore, but we do know Dragon
is on Awe Island. Therefore, I think Dragon is our
best lead right now. Marie looked at her two friends
(04:05):
hopefully. Well, even if you're right, what
do we do about it? Christian asked.
I think we should try to find out where Dragon lives in the
forest. Maybe we will find the symbol
there. Marie said.
Christian frowned. So, no civic building?
JJ thought a moment, then spoke.Actually, I think you should go
(04:29):
to the civic building. Even if I can't come with you,
we should check for the symbol there, just to be thorough.
If we don't, we'll always wonder.
Marie nodded. Right, and if the symbol is not
there, we won't have any other buildings to check anyway, so we
might as well try finding dragonafter that.
(04:50):
Marie said. JJ looked pointedly at
Christian. I agree with Marie, there has to
be a reason why the symbol is onboth Dragons, and it seems
especially important that we have two dragon clues, not just
one. So you guys check out the civic
building tomorrow, and if the symbol isn't there, let's follow
(05:11):
Marie's idea and try to find outwhere dragon lives in the
forest. Maybe someone knows where that
is. Christian shrugged and glanced
at Marie. All right, your hunt just
haven't let us run so far. Just then, the lunch bell rang
and the three gathered their things to head to their
(05:32):
afternoon classes. As they parted ways, Marie said
to Christian. We'll pick you up at 10:00
tomorrow morning. That night, Marie sat on her
bed, her journal and the clues laid out in front of her.
Once more, she studied every inch of the two Dragons.
On first glance, they looked like replicas of each other.
(05:54):
Not perfect matches, of course, because one was fabric and one
was metal, but they looked to bedepicting the same dragon.
However, the longer Marie examined them side by side, the
more slight differences she found.
She realized that the metal dragon had longer nails and a
(06:17):
longer tail, and more pronouncedfeatures.
It also had more scales on its back.
It seemed older, maybe wiser. In contrast, the stuffed dragon
looked younger, like it wasn't full grown yet.
Marie wasn't entirely certain though, because the differences
(06:39):
were subtle. She made copious notes about
these details in her detective'sjournal, but she decided she
wouldn't mention this to JJ and Christian just yet.
Instead, she hoped that when they figured out where Dragon
lived, they would also find Dragon.
Then she'd be able to compare how Dragon looked with both the
(07:00):
Stuffy and the figurine. That night, as she slept once
more hugging the Dragon Stuffy, Marie dreamed she was flying
over an unfamiliar island. While the visual of the island
was vague, she could clearly seeDragons on this island.
They were grouped together around something, but she
(07:22):
couldn't tell what they were doing.
The dream felt vivid and immediate, like a memory, though
she had no reason to believe such an island existed.
The next morning, Marie woke to the smell of pancakes coming
from the kitchen, her favorite breakfast.
(07:43):
She hopped out of bed and followed her nose, seating
herself at the kitchen table. Her dad was pouring pancake
batter into a pan and her mom was sitting at the kitchen table
sipping her coffee. She was dressed in her lab coat
for work. Morning, sweetheart, she said to
Marie. Did you sleep well?
(08:05):
I did, Marie said, thinking of the exciting dragon dream she'd
had. Dad tells me you 2 are off to
explore the civic building today, her mom said.
What are you planning on doing there?
Marie felt a flutter in her stomach.
She hated lying to her mom, so she tried to be as vague as
(08:25):
possible. Well, it's for a project of
sorts. She said.
What's the project? Her mom asked.
Marie's heart thumped. She really didn't want to
explain everything and risk having her parents tell her to
stop trying to solve the clues. Well, Marie said again, stalling
(08:46):
so she could choose her words carefully.
In the moment she felt like if she called it a school project
that would just lead to more questions, so she chose another
tack. It's kind of a game JJ,
Christian and I are playing. We are following made-up clues
to figure out a make believe mystery.
(09:07):
So we're pretending the next clue is at the civic building?
Marie had to admit it was a flimsy excuse after saying this
blatant lie. She swallowed hard, hoping her
mom wouldn't pick up on her discomfort.
Just then, her dad walked over, carrying a plate loaded with
(09:27):
steaming pancakes and a bowl of fresh blueberries.
It was the perfect distraction at the opportune moment.
You and three are so creative. Her mom said, passing Marie the
pancakes. Marie smiled with relief.
She stacked 2 pancakes on her plate, added a heaping scoop of
(09:49):
blueberries, and swirled Maple syrup across the top.
She wanted each bite to have a fresh blueberry and a bit of
Maple syrup on it. By the time they were done
eating and had cleaned up the kitchen, it was almost time to
go. Marie's mom headed off to work,
giving her a kiss on the head and wishing her good luck.
(10:12):
Marie raced up to her bedroom toget dressed.
She threw her journal and both Dragons into her backpack and
raced out to meet her dad at thecar.
At 10 AM sharp, they pulled intoChristian's driveway, and
shortly thereafter they were turning into the parking lot of
the Civic building. Mr. Duguay accompanied Marie and
(10:34):
Christian inside. For a moment they just stood in
the lobby, taking it all in, until Marie spotted what she was
looking for, the information desk.
She headed straight there. Excuse me, what is the original
part of this building before therenovations were done?
(10:56):
She asked the attendant. The old woman sitting there
smiled at Marie and chuckled. In all the years I've been
volunteering here, nobody has ever asked me that before, she
said. But I know the answer.
This room that is now the lobby and that side room to the left
(11:16):
where the original building, everything else is part of the
renovation. Thank you, Christian said,
immediately turning towards the room on the left.
Marie and her dad followed. The side room was set up as a
seating and refreshment area with a tea, coffee and lemonade
station at one end, along with aplatter of croissants and
(11:39):
doughnuts. Marie and Christian stood and
slowly turned in a circle, examining every inch of the
room, searching for the symbol anywhere in the decor or
architecture. It wasn't a big room, but it was
made out of what looked like ornately carved local stone.
(12:01):
There was a polished stone pillar in each corner.
On each pillar hung a decorativebanner.
Despite carefully looking at every inch of the walls and
ceiling, neither Marie nor Christian saw the symbol
anywhere. What are you looking for,
exactly? Maybe I can help, Marie's dad
(12:22):
said. Marie gave Christian a look.
We're supposed to find it ourselves.
That's part of the adventure, She said.
I see, Her dad said with a wink.Marie smiled a bit awkwardly,
feeling uncomfortable misleadingher father.
(12:42):
Technically it was the truth, they were supposed to find the
symbol themselves, but her dad thought they were trying to find
something for a pretend adventure, not a real one.
Let's check the lobby. Marie suggested.
Christian nodded and they headedback to the main room once more.
(13:03):
They slowly circled the room, looking for anything that had
the symbol on it with no luck. We have to check outside too.
Marie said to her dad. So they exited the building.
Mr. Duguay waited by the entrance while Marie and
Christian walked around the perimeter, looking for any
exterior wall that was part of the original civic building.
(13:26):
Still, they did not see the symbol anywhere.
Truth be told, Marie hadn't really expected to find it here.
All done, she told her dad. When they returned to the front
of the building, the three piledback into the car to drive
Christian home. Marie spoke up, already
(13:47):
determined to pursue her next lead.
Dad, where does Dragon live? In the AW Island forest, do you
know That's a good question. I have no idea, sweetie, her dad
said. Well, do you know how old Dragon
is? Christian asked.
(14:09):
That's a tricky question too, said Mr. Duguay.
People started meeting Dragon very gradually.
There wasn't a moment when Dragon just appeared.
He paused to think a moment. Seems very young though, he
concluded. Marie tended to agree Dragon was
(14:30):
smaller than she was. But where are Dragon's parents?
Are there more Dragons on Awe Island?
She asked. The more she thought about
Dragon, the more questions she had.
I don't know where Dragon's parents are, but I'm pretty sure
there is only one Dragon on Awe Island.
(14:50):
Her dad said as he pulled the car into Christian's driveway.
Thanks, Mr. de Gay, Christian said to Marie's dad.
See you in school on Monday, he said to Marie.
See ya, Marie replied as her daddrove them home.
Marie plotted what to do next. Now that she was sure that the
(15:11):
oldest thing was not a building, she had to figure out where to
find Dragon's home. Everyone knew Dragon lived in
the Otway Island forest, but didanyone know exactly where?
Marie wondered if Madame Amato knew anything about Dragon.
She hoped the ice cream shop proprietor would return soon, if
(15:33):
she wasn't back already. That evening after dinner, Marie
flipped to a fresh page in her journal.
She wrote at the top everything we know about Dragon.
Underneath that, she started a bullet point list.
Age young but exact. Age unknown.
(15:55):
Home AA Wei Island forest but exact Location unknown.
Parents unknown. She tapped her pen on the paper,
then added a few more notes. Height about the size of a 5
year old child. Appearance green with a
(16:17):
heart-shaped tail. Personality friendly and
helpful. Mute but communicates with hands
and sometimes fire breath. Only known dragon on Alway
Island. Marie looked over her list
again, trying to think of anything else she knew about
(16:38):
dragon. She drew a blank.
Marie concluded that dragon was more of a mystery than she had
ever considered before. She stared at the dragon stuffy
that sat on her bed. Their next goal was clear.
They needed to find Dragon's home.
There was a problem, they'd needan adult with them to go into
(17:01):
the forest. Unless they could tell their
parents they're going to the library then instead slip into
the forest. Marie cringed at the thought,
though she sure didn't want to find out what the consequences
would be if they got caught lying and sneaking off some
(17:21):
place they were not allowed to be unsupervised.
She closed her journal and left it on her desk.
After changing into her PJS, sheshot a quick message to JJ and
Christian. Want to do homework at the
library tomorrow at 3:00 PM? Once again, she typed the word
(17:42):
homework in all capital letters. It was her code for their secret
quest. Her message garnered 2 thumbs up
from her friends. Marie was both excited and
anxious. This would be their first time
back in the library since the fire.
Not only would they discuss how to find Dragon's home in the
(18:03):
forest, they'd also find out if anything had been damaged in the
rare and out of print book section where the fire had
occurred. Marie crossed her fingers that
it hadn't destroyed the secret spot, the book where they'd
found the original map and the third Riddle.
Tomorrow afternoon she'd find out one way or another.
(18:27):
She could only hope their biggest clue had not gone up in
smoke. After not seeing the symbol on
the civic building, Marie, JJ and Christian wonder if the
oldest on this island home is somehow connected to the
island's beloved little dragon. But they don't even know where
(18:50):
Dragon lives. What will they do?
