Previously on Adventures on Awe Island, Christian's exciting
discovery solved a big problem for the trio.
Will it be just what Marie, JJ and Christian need to solve one
of the riddles? Welcome to adventures on Awe
(00:23):
Island. Chapter 5 Dragon Part 3 During
the intermission of the play Obscuratus Island, Marie, her
parents, and their guests went to the theater lobby to stretch
(00:45):
their legs. They entered the queue for
refreshments, adults deep in conversation while Marie and
Saskia chatted away. Saskia was enjoying the story as
much as Marie was. When it was their turn to order
beverages, Marie read the menu. On the board there were two kid
friendly fresh juice concoctionson offer.
(01:08):
Marie chose the one called CocoaPine Loco, which was made with
coconut water and pineapple juice.
Saskia picked the one called Blimey Limey Orange.
The attendant handed Marie a short, wide glass that was
garnished with a wedge of pineapple, a curl of coconut,
(01:29):
and a small, shiny, bright red Berry.
Saskia's drink came in a tall, slim glass topped with a wedge
of orange, a sprig of mint, and also one of those same bright
red berries. Even though she didn't recognize
the Berry, Marie popped hers into her mouth and immediately
(01:50):
bit down. It burst with a sweet, tangy
flavor that was unexpectedly familiar.
Marie's eyebrows shot up. Wait a minute, could this be a
visiberry? It was hard to be sure since she
had never seen or eaten a fresh one before, only the ones that
(02:12):
were mixed into Amato's very visiberry crumble ice cream.
Excuse me, mom. Marie said, touching her
mother's hand to get her attention.
Her mom excused herself from theconversation with Saskia's
parents and turned to her daughter.
Yes, sweetie? Her mom said.
What was the Berry that was on top of our drink?
(02:34):
Marie asked. What Berry?
Her mom glanced at the girl's drinks.
Neither had a Berry on top anymore because Saskia had eaten
hers as well. It was a small red Berry.
We ate them already, Marie said.Just then, the lights in the
lobby began to flash, signaling the end of intermission.
(02:58):
It was time to return to the theater for Act 2 of the play.
An announcement came over the speakers, reminding the audience
that they were allowed to bring their refreshments in the
theater. I don't know what kind of Berry
it was, Marie, but we should head back to our seats now.
Her mom said. Marie nodded as they joined the
flow of people making their way toward the doors of the theater.
(03:21):
Almost immediately after they reached their seats in the front
row, the lights dimmed again andAct 2 of the play began.
Marie held her breath in eager anticipation.
At this point in the play, afterthe first big mystery was solved
and the first battle was won, the teenagers had found a way
back home, but a sudden plot twist sent them back to
(03:45):
Obscuratus Island for the next part of their quest.
And so the action continued, with the teenagers bouncing back
and forth between their home andObscuratus Island, each time
having to solve another part of the mystery.
As for the teenagers, while others before them had tried and
(04:05):
failed, it was only when these three friends solved all the
parts of the mystery that they could fight the final battle.
And in the end, they won, to everyone's relief and joy.
When the play was over, the theater filled with cheers and
applause. Marie joined her fellow audience
(04:27):
members in giving the actors a standing ovation.
Everything about this play felt so real to her, right down to
the main character also being named Marie.
The crowd slowly made its way out of the theater as their
group walked back to their parked cars that they had left
at the nearby restaurant. Marie and Saskia compared their
(04:49):
favorite moments in the play. Saskia loved the parts where the
three teenagers discovered new clues that helped them on their
quest, while Marie especially enjoyed the part where the
character named Marie discoveredThe Cave of Wonders, only to
have it disappear soon thereafter.
When it was time to part, Marie and Saskia shared a fist bump.
(05:13):
Thanks for hanging out with me, I had a lot of fun.
Saskia said. I did too.
Marie agreed. It was really nice to meet you
after she got home. Marie quickly got ready for bed.
As she settled under her covers, dragon Stuffy tucked in one arm,
she took a deep breath and let it out slowly.
(05:34):
Sometimes at night, when everything was quiet and there
were no distractions, she liked to lay in her bed and reflect on
things for a bit. The play had turned out to be a
fun distraction, but she was still eager to continue on her
own quest to solve the riddles and help the teenagers in the
picture from the buried treasure.
(05:56):
But she had to wait another weekbefore she and her friends could
go to find Dragon's home and seeif something there was the
oldest thing on Awe Island. She fell asleep trying to
imagine what that could be. The next week passed ever so
slowly for Marie. Although Sal had thought the
(06:17):
rare books room at the library would reopen after a week, there
was a delay and the space was still under repair.
Finally, it was the appointed Thursday.
Marie had already gotten permission from her parents to
ride her bike to school. She told them she was going to
the library afterwards with JJ and Christian.
(06:39):
She hated lying to her parents. They trusted her and believed
her. The guilt of betraying that
trust nodded Marie. She had to do this, she told
herself. This was too important, they had
to solve the riddles so they could help the teenagers in the
buried treasure photo before it was too late.
(07:03):
At lunch that day, as they talked through their plan one
more time, Kristen tossed a bright shiny apple from his
lunch bag into his backpack. Aren't you going to eat it?
You usually like apples? JJ commented.
I do, but I thought it would be nice to bring to Dragon.
I don't think apple trees grow in the forest.
(07:24):
Christian said. Marie smiled at her friend's
thoughtfulness. It was a great idea to bring a
little gift and leave it to Christian to understand how
special an apple might be for dragon, given that apples don't
grow in the AW Wei Island forest.
After school, they rode their bikes to the park and paused a
(07:46):
moment at the start of the hiking trail.
It had been cloudy all afternoon.
Glancing up at the darkening sky, Marie swallowed hard.
She wasn't about to turn back now.
Looks like rain is coming. We'd better hurry, she said with
a determined resolve. Then she led the charge into the
forest. As they bumped along the uneven
(08:08):
ground, she had a fleeting thought and called out.
Are we allowed to ride bikes on this path?
Nobody answered because it didn't really matter.
They were already breaking rulesjust by being here unsupervised.
Hopefully they wouldn't encounter any adults on the
trail who would question them. They were committed now.
(08:32):
After a time, they reached the first fork in the road.
To the right. Christian bellowed to the right.
Marie and JJ echoed as they continued along.
Marie took in the forest around them.
It was biodiverse, containing predominantly pine and oak
trees, with a few other species mixed in as well.
(08:53):
Their branches swayed and creaked as the wind kicked up.
Soon, they reached the second fork in the road.
This time, all three cheered to the right together.
The light that filtered through the trees was dimming in the
approaching storm, making it feel almost like dusk.
Beneath the canopy above, Marie peddled harder.
(09:15):
After waiting so long for this moment, she wasn't about to let
a little storm deter them. Finally, they reached the third
fork in the road. Nobody said anything.
They all just headed once more to the right, peddling as fast
as they could, cold wind blasting their faces.
Marie wished she had brought something warmer to wear than
(09:38):
just her T-shirt, but that was all she had.
She shivered as she heard the raindrops splattering the leaves
overhead, then plopping onto herhelmet, shoulders and back.
Being wet in the wind made the chill even sharper and more
miserable. Hurry.
She called to her friends standing on her petals to get
(09:58):
more leverage to ride even faster.
They pressed on and on as the rain got heavier and heavier,
until suddenly they hit a spot where the trail seemed to just
stop. They all paused, wiping water
off their faces to look around. All three were soaking wet and
cold, teeth chattering. A little distance away was a
(10:20):
small cave that almost seemed tohave risen out of the earth
itself, with a huge oak tree growing beside it.
A soft golden glow emanated fromwithin, and a thin curl of smoke
wafted out of the entrance. Hello.
Marie called out. Dragon.
(10:41):
They waited. Soon a small dragon had peered
out of the opening of The Cave, looking around curiously through
the downpour. The little green dragon was very
young, with bright eyes, a friendly smile and a kind heart.
Everyone loved Dragon, who was very unique being the only
(11:03):
dragon on Awe Island. Upon seeing the three of them
standing there in the rain, Dragons smiled and immediately
waved at them welcomingly to TheCave.
The three friends leaned their bikes against a tree, took off
their bike helmets, and crawled into the small opening, dragging
their backpacks and helmets along with them.
(11:26):
The Cave was just one small chamber lit by a little fire in
a nook near the entrance that gave the space an inviting glow.
The opening was perfectly situated so that no rainwater
came in, but smoke could still escape.
Outside, in another cozy nook towards the back, a small pile
(11:47):
of berries and seeds lay nearby a soft bed of Moss.
With the three kids, all their stuff and dragon space was quite
tight. The ceiling was so low, the only
option for Marie, JJ, and Christian was to sit.
Marie looked at Dragon as Dragonlooked at all of them.
(12:10):
It was obvious how small the little dragon truly was.
At 10 years old, Marie, JJ, and Christian were easily a foot
taller by comparison. Dragon's head tilted with
curiosity. Marie remembered.
The dragon didn't speak, but thewarmth in their expression said
(12:30):
plenty. Sorry for getting your cave wet,
Dragon. JJ said.
Dragon smiled and pointed at thefire.
Though it was small, the fire was very effective at warming
the demure cave, and they were already starting to dry off.
Dragon smiled again, then reached over to the piles of
(12:52):
berries and seeds, clearly aboutto share the food with them.
Oh no thanks Dragon, we have to eat dinner soon, but we brought
this for you. Christian said.
He took the bright red apple outof his bag and handed it to
Dragon. Dragon held it in their hands,
sniffing the apple inquisitivelybefore taking a nibble, then a
(13:16):
big bite, crunching and nodding at the kids gratefully.
As Dragon ate the apple, Marie spoke.
Dragon, we're looking for something that is the oldest
thing on Awe Island. Do you know what that might be?
Dragon shrugged uncertainly and crunched another bite of the
apple. Marie then opened her backpack
(13:39):
and took out the dragon. Stuffy.
Dragon's eyes widened in surprise, setting the apple on a
Flat Rock, Dragon held out of hand.
Marie passed the stuffy over, watching as Dragon examined it
with great interest, gently turning it over and over,
(13:59):
tracing some of the stitched details.
Unexpectedly, Dragon giggled, silently pointing at the plushy,
then at themself. Yes, it's a dragon, just like
you. Marie said.
She gestured at the toys underside, and Dragon turned the
stuffy upside down. Marie pointed to the strange
(14:21):
symbol there, the one that was aswirly pattern that kind of
looked like a four leaf Clover or a butterfly with a circle on
top and some extra lines around it.
Do you recognize this? She asked.
Dragon thought for a moment, then shook their head back and
forth. Marie sighed, this was looking
(14:44):
like a dead end, they were having no luck.
Dragon studied the symbol further and suddenly lit up,
nodding vigorously. You do know?
Marie cried as Dragon nodded yes, handing the stuffy back to
Marie. Dragon crawled over to The Cave
entrance, peeked outside, and then exited The Cave.
(15:06):
Marie stowed the Dragon stuffy back in her backpack, and the
kids followed Dragon back outside.
The rain had nearly stopped, buteverything was soaking wet.
Dragon went around to the side of The Cave that was closest to
the huge oak tree, where variousforest plants crowded together
in the fertile soil. Dragon pushed them out of the
(15:28):
way, crouching down, and began scrubbing vigorously on the
slick stone of The Cave near theground.
After a few moments, Dragon pointed, and there it was.
The symbol carved into the side of The Cave, it was not very
big, nor was it carved very deeply.
(15:49):
With it being hidden by forest plants and having a little dirt
on it, you wouldn't even know itwas there.
Marie let out a squeal of delight and Christian let out a
triumphant whoop. We found it.
JJ exclaimed, full of disbelief. Then she looked at Marie and
Christian. Now what?
(16:12):
Marie glanced at Dragon, who merely shrugged.
I don't know. Marie admitted, looking around.
We still don't know what the oldest thing is on this island
home, but I bet it's somewhere around here.
It has to be, yeah. Christian agreed, scanning the
area for anything that might also be a clue.
(16:34):
Everything just looked soppy, wet from the rainstorm.
Just then Marie's alarm vibratedon her watch and she startled.
She'd set it to buzz at 4:30 so they would be sure to be back in
time and not raise any suspicionwith their parents.
We got to go. She said urgently to Christian
and JJ. Then she turned to Dragon.
(16:58):
Thanks, Dragon, for letting us dry off in your cave and for
showing us where the symbol is. May we come back and look around
more sometime? Dragon smiled and nodded, then
waved goodbye and crawled back into the cozy little cave.
Let's hurry. JJ said as they righted their
(17:18):
bikes. The saddles and handlebars were
covered in droplets of water from the storm.
Yuck. Christian muttered, running his
hand over his saddle to wipe away some of the water.
Marie did the same, then used the hem of her T-shirt to wipe
it a little drier. She brushed the dirt off her
helmet, then put it on her head and clicked the ends of the chin
(17:41):
strap together. JJ and Christian followed suit.
The three mounted their bikes and raced towards the trail to
get back in time before anyone realized they were not at the
library. Marie's legs burned as she
pedaled, breathing hard, but shebarely noticed.
Her mind raced faster than her bike.
(18:02):
They had found the strange symbol again, this time on the
real Dragons cave. They were in the right place,
but now what? She repeated part of the Riddle
to herself. The oldest on this island.
Home, That's the place for you to roam.
There you'll find the gift that's best for you to continue
(18:25):
on your quest. As they approached the trailhead
that was at the park, Marie vowed to go back to the forest
as soon as possible and not leave until she found the gift.
Whatever it was, nothing was going to stop her from finding
it. Now that Marie, JJ, and
(18:49):
Christian have found Dragon's home in the forest and located
evidence of the strange symbol there, will they be able to
figure out what it all means? Find out when the adventure
continues in our next episode ofAdventures on Awe Island.
