Previously on Adventures on AA Wei Island, Marie, JJ and
Christian's visit to Dragon revealed another instance of the
strange symbol, but they had to leave before exploring further.
Will they get back in time to avoid getting caught lying to
their parents? Welcome to adventures on AA Wei
(00:27):
Island. Chapter 6 The Secret Spot Part 1
As Marie, JJ, and Kristen emerged at the trailhead, Marie
glanced at her watch and felt a huge flood of relief.
(00:50):
They still had 15 minutes to gethome, plenty of time to stick to
the story they told. Their parents would be none the
wiser. As far as anyone knew, they had
been at the library, not visiting Dragon in the Forest.
They began peddling toward the library, intending to pass by it
(01:11):
on their way home, when they noticed strobing lights coming
from the parking lot. It was strange and surprising,
the bright red and blue flashing, cutting through the
Gray overcast like beacons. The time it took to approach
felt suddenly very surreal to Marie, as if everything was
(01:32):
happening in slow motion, even though it really only took a few
moments. Wonder what's going on at the
library? JJ called to her friends.
As they drew nearer, they saw that there was a police car and
a small group of people standingwith an officer.
At first, Marie thought maybe there was another fire, but she
(01:54):
couldn't see any fire trucks. Then she saw her parents
standing near the officer. Vaguely, she wondered why her
mom wasn't at work. Her mom usually didn't get home
until 6:00 or later. I see my parents, Christian
said. As soon as Christian spoke,
(02:16):
everything clicked into place for Marie.
Oh no, they know we weren't at the library, they think we're
missing. She said shakily.
A lump instantly formed in her throat as they coasted closer.
The people gathered weren't justan anonymous crowd, it was all
(02:37):
of their parents. By now everyone had turned and
was watching the kids approach. There was no escaping this one.
They were caught in their lie, ever the fast thinker.
JJ muttered quickly. What do we tell them about where
we were? Marie gulped.
(02:58):
The truth felt like the best option, but maybe not all of it.
We just tell them that we decided to go visit Dragon.
She whispered. Got it.
Christian replied, his voice hard with resolve as they pulled
up to the group and stopped their bikes.
Thank goodness you're safe, J JSMom cried, rushing forward as
(03:23):
the three friends got off their bikes and took their helmets
off, Missus Young enveloped her daughter in a hug of relief.
Christian and Marie's parents were right behind, pulling their
kids in tight embraces. The hug didn't call Marie's
pounding heart. Instead, tears welled up in her
eyes and came spilling over, thestress of the moment finally
(03:46):
crashing down. The thought of disappointing her
parents and betraying their trust was almost too much to
bear. It was something they had talked
about many times. Her parents had said over and
over that she could tell them anything and she would not get
in trouble so long as she didn'tlie.
(04:09):
But she did lie, and it felt horrible that they knew it.
The police officer spoke to the parents.
Are they all OK? The parents nodded in grateful
relief. Then the officer turned to
Marie, JJ, and Christian kids. Everyone was really worried
about you. We're glad you're safe.
(04:32):
The officer headed back to theirsquad car, turned off the
flashing lights, and left. Everyone watched them go in
silence. Marie's mom finally broke the
quiet. Her voice was soft and she
repeated the words the officer had just said.
We are very glad you're all safe.
(04:53):
Then she added. Let's all go home.
And with that, Marie's dad picked up her bike and helmet,
put them in the trunk of their car, and off they went.
Upon arriving at home, Marie's dad spoke.
Why don't you get changed out ofyour wet clothes?
Dinner will be ready in 15 minutes.
(05:14):
Marie nodded solemnly and plodded to her bedroom.
She dropped her backpack on the floor and slowly changed into
some dry clothes, dreading the upcoming conversation.
She stopped in the bathroom to wash her hands and caught a
glimpse of her tear stained cheeks and windblown hair in the
mirror. A shower was definitely in
(05:35):
order. Marie.
Dinner's ready. Her mom called.
The scent of homemade pizza wafted up the stairs.
It smelled good, and Marie's stomach rumbled even though it
was in knots. Her dad was just pulling the
pizza out of the oven when she reached the kitchen.
The family sat down together at the dinner table, served
(05:58):
themselves pizza and salad, and began to eat.
After a few moments of silence, her mom spoke between bites.
Sweetie, where did you go on your bike?
She asked. Marie had been going over what
to say in her head ever since she'd gotten home.
The words came out in a tumble. Christian found out that Dragon
(06:22):
lived in the center of the forest, and we wanted to go see
where that was. She swallowed hard, hoping they
would not ask more questions, but they did.
You wanted to see where Dragon lived and decided to go in the
middle of a storm. Her dad said a bit
incredulously. Well, we didn't think there was
(06:45):
going to be so much rain. Marie explained.
That was true. Her parents exchanged a look
between themselves. We only plan to go at the last
minute. She added quickly.
This was a complete lie, and shecould feel her cheeks flush as
she said it. Her dad's voice grew heavier.
(07:07):
You know you're not supposed to go into the forest alone.
What if you'd gotten lost or hurt?
He said, emotion swelling in hisusually calm voice.
You should have asked one of theparents to go with you.
We were all very worried when werealized you three were not at
the library like you said you would be.
(07:29):
There was more silence. Marie took a deep breath.
I know I disappointed you, she said.
This was 100% true. Yes, her mom said.
Dad and I have talked, and we'vedecided that through the end of
the school year, we're going to take away all of your tech
(07:51):
except for what you need for school.
Marie's heart sunk. But that's a whole month, she
said. Exactly, her dad replied.
Serious consequences for a serious choice you made.
Marie nodded. I get it, I'm sorry.
(08:13):
Apology accepted, her mom said. Now, let's finish our dinner
while it's still hot. Marie breathed a sigh of relief,
and the tight lump in her throatloosened a little.
She was glad to have that conversation over with.
When they were through eating, Marie helped load the
dishwasher, then told her parents she was going to her
(08:36):
room to do her homework. First, though, she took a long,
hot shower to wash away the rain, the mud, and some of the
tension from the afternoon. She felt a little better
afterward and decided to change into her pajamas.
Once cozy and clean, she dumped the contents of her wet backpack
(08:57):
out on her bed, along with her homework assignments.
The stuffed dragon tumbled out. She picked it up and looked at
it, remembering how Dragon had studied every inch of the toy so
closely, pointing at it. Bend themself over and over.
(09:18):
Oh my gosh. Marie whispered as it abruptly
dawned on her what Dragon was trying to tell them.
The stuffy wasn't just any dragon, it was dragon.
It had to be. Every marking was a perfect
match. But why did someone make a
(09:39):
stuffed toy that was a replica of dragon?
She wondered. And what about the metal dragon
figurine? She went to her desk drawer and
retrieved the figurine, then compared it side by side to the
dragon stuffy. While there were similarities,
it was clear that the figurine was not representative of the
(10:00):
AWE Island Dragon. She'd already noticed the
differences last time she'd examined the two Dragons.
The figurine had a longer tail and more scales.
The tip of the tail had a hard shape, but it was smaller and
less obvious. It also had longer limbs, bigger
(10:21):
wings, and a longer snout. Now that Marie had seen dragon
up close, it confirmed what she'd suspected before.
This figurine was meant to be anolder dragon, possibly an adult,
But this just raised further questions.
If the Dragon Stuffy was indeed representing the Awe Island
(10:45):
dragon, then what dragon did themetal figurine represent?
Everyone knew that the young dragon they'd visited was the
only dragon on Awe Island, and she'd never read about Dragons
being anywhere else in the world.
Maybe the dragon figurine was how the little dragon would look
(11:05):
when they grew up and were full size, she mused.
Marie grabbed her detective's journal and a pen from her desk,
sat down on her bed, and turned to a blank page.
She wrote at the top two Dragons, then jotted down all of
her observations and theories. She filled the entire page,
(11:29):
thoughts memorialized in her journal.
Marie's mind quieted enough thatshe could now turn to her
homework. Before she knew it, she was done
and it was nearly time for bed. She went to brush her teeth and
patted down to her parents room to tell them goodnight.
Then she climbed into bed with alibrary book she was in the
(11:49):
middle of reading. She read by the warm glow of her
small bedside lamp until she couldn't hold her eyes open any
longer. The next morning at breakfast,
she asked her parents if she could stop by the library after
school to see if the rare books room had been reopened yet.
To her surprise, they gave her permission so long as she was
(12:12):
home by 5:00. During lunch at school, she sat
with JJ and Christian, and the three commiserated about their
experience the day prior. My parents were really upset,
Christian said. They said they were very worried
about us. I'm grounded for two weeks.
Mine too. I'm not allowed to go to my next
(12:35):
robotics competition. JJ commiserated.
At least they accepted the storyabout visiting Dragon.
Mine too. Marie also agreed.
No tech for me through the end of the school year.
She said with a sigh. She wondered when they would be
able to go visit Dragon again and search the area.
(12:56):
They still needed to solve the Riddle by finding the oldest
thing on AOI Island. The bell rang and they headed
off to their afternoon classes. At least it was Friday.
After school she headed straightfor the library, The comforting
whoosh of the automatic doors ushered her inside and she made
(13:17):
a beeline for the information desk.
Darius was there today with a friendly smile.
Welcome back Marie, I hear you gave everyone quite a scare
yesterday and glad you're OK. He said.
Marie's heart flip-flopped. How embarrassing.
Did everyone know? Yep, just fine, she replied
(13:40):
quickly, eager to change the subject.
Is the rare books room open yet?Not quite yet, Darius said.
Marie's shoulder slumped in disappointment.
But I know you've been eager to go down there, He continued.
Is there a particular book you want?
While the room isn't ready for patrons yet, The books are
(14:03):
ready. If there is one you want to
borrow, I can go get it for you.If it wasn't destroyed in the
fire. Marie's pulse raced.
This was it. She was going to find out if
their special book was OK or not.
The book where they had found the map to the buried treasure.
The book that had given them thethird Riddle.
(14:25):
Yes please, the book is called the Secret Spot.
She said. After a beat she added.
It's in the kids section. Darius looked it up on his
computer terminal then nodded. 1moment please, I'll go get it.
And with that he grabbed the special key and disappeared
(14:45):
towards the back of the main floor where the heavy door
labeled restricted was. Marie held her breath.
Before she knew it, Darius returned with the book, smiling.
You got lucky. This one was not damaged.
You can check it out for three days if you want it.
Oh yes, I do. Marie said, rocking on her feet
(15:09):
with anticipation. She dug her library card out of
her backpack, handed it to Darius, and within moments he
had checked out the book and handed it to her.
There you go, be reading, he said.
Thanks. Marie called, already turning to
leave. She headed towards home as fast
(15:31):
as she could, determined to examine the book from cover to
cover before the weekend was through.
It had been invaluable to them thus far, and she felt certain
it had to hold even more clues. Marie can't wait to read The
(15:54):
Secret Spot and see if the book holds more clues to help them on
their quest. She has to wait, however,
because it's time for the annualfundraiser at the AL Wei Island
Animal Shelter and there will bean unexpected guest.
Who could it be? Find out when the adventure
continues in our next episode ofAdventures on AL Wei Island.
