(00:00):
Previously on adventures on AA Way Island, Marie and JJ finally
visited the Great Grandmother Oak.
After lots of digging, they found the next buried treasure
and were surprised to find out it was a simple blue tile.
(00:22):
Welcome to. Adventures on AA Way Island.
Chapter 8 The Next Clue Part 1 The entire bike ride out of the
forest, Marie was on pins and needles with curiosity about the
(00:43):
tile as they approached the Duguay home.
She hoped JJ could stay for a bit so they could both examine
it together. But just as they glided into the
driveway, her dad's phone buzzed.
That was your mom, Mr. Duguay said to JJ.
She wants you to head home straight away.
(01:04):
Oh, OK, JJ said. Mr. Duguay glanced down at JJ's
blistered finger. Let's get that taken care of
before you go. He disappeared into the house
and returned a moment later witha small bandage from the first
aid kit. Once her blister was cleaned and
covered, JJ flexed her hand gently and smiled.
(01:26):
Thanks, Mr. Duguay, she said. Then she turned to Marie and
shrugged apologetically. I guess I'll see you at school
tomorrow, yeah, Marie answered. Every bit of her wanted to
examine the tile, but it would have to wait, and school would
be a difficult place to discuss at length without interruption.
(01:47):
As JJ turned to go, Marie blurted out an idea.
JJ, do you want to do homework at the library together?
Tomorrow after school, we could work on our projects.
As she said this, Marie held hereyebrows as high as they would
go. JJ raised hers, mirroring what
(02:08):
Marie had done. That would be great, JJ said.
Marie turned to her dad. Would that be OK?
Dad, please, she said. Mr. Duguay smiled.
I bet you both have a lot to do with the end of the school year.
So close. That should be fine, but I need
you home by 4:00, OK? Marie agreed.
(02:33):
I'll have to make sure it's OK with my parents too.
JJ said. I'll let you know in school
tomorrow afternoon. See ya.
JJ said before she's zoomed off towards her own home.
Marie and her dad put their bikes away and went inside for
the rest of the day, no matter what she was doing.
Marie's thoughts returned to thesecond buried treasure.
(02:56):
It was a tile. A tile?
What an unexpected clue. Who knew how long it was buried
there? The tile had been caked with
dirt, and she'd only caught a quick glimpse of it.
From what Marie had seen, it wassimply a plain square blue tile.
(03:17):
What were they supposed to do with it, she wondered.
No matter what, it definitely was a huge relief that they had
finally found it, and it had taken forever to figure out the
third clue. But with perseverance, they had
done it. For that she was very proud and
(03:38):
she was excited to see where it LED them next.
Before Marie went to bed, she took out her detective's journal
and turned to the page that logged important dates.
She wrote down the date and noted found second buried
treasure. It was a wonderfully satisfying
feeling. The next day, morning classes
(04:00):
passed fairly quickly as everyone was in end of school
year mode talking about final projects and last due dates.
At lunch, Marie met up with JJ and Christian.
Instead of taking their usual table in the middle of the
cafeteria, they chose a spot with plenty of empty tables
around it, which was about as private as they could get.
(04:23):
JJ glanced around to make sure nobody else was nearby, then
opened her backpack and took outthe tile.
It was wrapped in a dish towel. I had to wash it because it was
so dirty. JJ explained.
Marie and Christian leaned in asshe carefully unwrapped the
treasure. It was a plain, square ceramic
(04:44):
tile, just like the kind used intiling a wall or a floor.
It was a deep, rich shade of blue, somewhere between royal
and midnight, speckled with white gold flecks that almost
looked like stars. That was it, a floor tile?
Christian said disbelievingly. What kind of treasure is that?
(05:08):
Marie felt a twinge of disappointment too.
Yeah, that's weird. She said she'd hoped the tile
would have a special design or apicture on it, something that
pointed towards what they shoulddo next.
Then Marie looked up at J JS face.
JJ didn't look disappointed at all.
(05:29):
In fact, she was smiling broadly.
Well. JJ said slowly.
That's what I thought too, then I turned it over.
As she said this, she flipped the tile and there it was,
another clue neatly etched on the back.
(05:49):
Congratulations, you've come quite far.
Now it's time to raise the bar. There are some skills for you to
hone, to prove yourselves and show you've grown.
History will teach you more. A certain building, A special
floor. Just keep going, take extra
care. Follow the tile if you dare.
(06:13):
Not another Riddle. Christian groaned.
It took us forever to figure outthe last one, and we still
haven't figured out the second one.
Marie's emotions were mixed too.She was thrilled the tile had
something on it, but Christian had a point.
These riddles were really hard to figure out.
(06:36):
She traced her finger over the etching.
Just keep going, she repeated. You know that was exactly what
Madam Amato said to JJ and I at the ice cream making session.
She noted. Do you think it's a coincidence?
No idea, JJ said. At least it says we've come
(06:57):
quite far. That means we're really getting
somewhere. Yeah, but where?
Christian argued. I'm ready for some answers.
Marie sighed, staring at the Riddle.
She didn't have much to say at the moment and wanted a little
time to Mull things over. We were going to meet at the
(07:18):
library after school for a bit to talk about the clue and next
steps, she said to Christian. Can you go?
Nope. Christian said, left out again.
We haven't been leaving you out on purpose.
We can't help that you've been grounded.
JJ said hotly. Did you expect us to just sit
(07:39):
around and do nothing until you weren't grounded anymore?
Yeah, actually I did, Christian retorted.
That's what friends would do, wait for each other.
If we're really in this together, please don't fight.
Marie said just as the bell rang.
We can fight if we want to. JJ snapped back.
(08:02):
She quickly rewrapped the tile in the dishcloth and shoved it
into her bag. Then she turned to Christian.
And besides, I can't go today either.
JJ stormed off in One Direction as Christian grabbed his bag,
shouldered it, and stormed off in a different direction.
As Marie gathered her bag and headed off to class, she felt
(08:25):
terrible. She realized how left out
Christian must be feeling, firstnot getting to make the custom
ice cream and then missing out on finding the next clue.
And now everyone was mad at eachother again.
After school, Marie didn't know what to do.
Her parents were expecting her to go to the library, but she
(08:48):
didn't feel like going without JJ, and she didn't feel like
going straight home either, so she started walking that
direction anyway, hoping she'd figure it out on the way.
About halfway there, a message from her dad buzzed on her
watch. I'll pick you up at Amato's at
4:00. Going to buy some volcanic
(09:09):
visibly eruption since we didn'tgo yesterday.
He noted. She sent back a thumbs up.
That was what she would do, go to Amato's and just hang out
there until her dad came. When she walked in the door,
Zander was behind the counter. Marie blinked as her heart
skipped a beat. Was Madame Amato gone again?
(09:32):
When Zander saw her, he smiled and greeted her warmly.
Hi Marie, back for some of your custom ice cream, it's been
really popular. Marie shook her head.
No, my dad is going to buy someone, he picks me up in a
little bit. Biting her bottom lip, she
hesitated a moment before asking.
(09:54):
Where's Madame Amato? Marie held her breath, waiting
for the answer, feeling sure Madame Amato was gone again,
gone to wherever Saphos was. She's in back making some ice
cream. Xander answered brightly.
Marie let out her breath and smiled in relief.
(10:15):
Oh good, what can I get for you today?
Zander asked. One peanut butter cookie,
please. Marie said it was her favorite
kind of cookie. Got it.
Great choice, said Zander. He went to the baked goods
display and selected a deliciouslooking peanut butter cookie
with perfect hash marks on the top.
(10:38):
As soon as he set it on the countertop, Marie could smell
the toasted peanuts. She fished in her pocket of her
backpack for some money and paidfor the cookie.
Thanks, Xander. She said as she picked up the
plate with the cookie. She headed to a cafe table that
was off to one side. It felt strange to be completely
(10:58):
alone in the ice cream shop. Marie sat with her back to the
counter and took out her detective's notebook.
Turning to a blank page, she munched on the cookie.
Buildings with history, she wrote in the top margin.
Might as well brainstorm the place the tile might be
referring to, she thought. Ah Wei Island Historical Society
(11:23):
library civic building, She listed.
When she looked up, her eyes landed on a wooden carving on
the wall. She hadn't noticed before.
It was of an island with the volcano erupting.
She stared at it for quite some time, mesmerized, wondering if
that was the mysterious island that was next to theirs.
(11:46):
I see you notice the artwork, A kind old voice said from behind
her. Marie turned.
Madam Amato? She exclaimed in surprise.
Yes, yes. The old woman said.
May I sit with you for a moment?Marie nodded, feeling a certain
amount of disbelief. She hadn't expected to have the
(12:08):
opportunity to talk to Madam Amato today.
Where are your friends? Madam Amato asked her.
They couldn't come today, Marie said.
I see. Madam Amato said with a
reassuring smile. Your heart is heavy, she noted.
Marie nodded, grateful for the opportunity to talk.
(12:32):
Christian's feelings are hurt. He was grounded, so JJ and I
made the ice cream and found thenext clue without him, she
explained. It's hard to be the person who
is left out, Madame Amato said. Marie nodded again.
I thought he would understand that we wanted him there and
(12:52):
that would be enough, but it wasn't.
Madame Amato paused. How would you feel if JJ and
Christian had done those things without you?
Like I didn't matter to them? Murray admitted.
It's important to take special care nurturing friendships.
Madame Amato said gently. True friends are priceless
(13:17):
because they will be by your side no matter what.
She paused, then looked Marie inthe eye.
You need JJ and Christian, and they need you if you are to
solve this quest. Marie nodded again and there was
silence for a few moments. What was the clue you found?
(13:37):
Madam? Amato asked.
A blue tile that had a Riddle onthe back about how we have to
prove ourselves and show we've grown and history revealing
more, and a building with a special floor.
Marie said we're supposed to follow the tile.
Oh, very good, Madame Amato said.
(13:59):
There was something about the way she said very good, as if
she had known what the clue was and had been anticipating they
would find it. Marie opened her mouth to ask
Madame Amato if she had known about the clue just as the door
to the ice cream shop opened with a cheerful tinkle,
revealing Mr. Duguay. Just keep going, work together,
(14:23):
Madame Amato whispered to Marie as both rose from the table.
Madame Amato walked to Mr. Duguay.
Welcome, she said warmly, extending her hand.
Your daughter's ice cream flavorhas quickly become a customer
favorite. Mr. Duguay smiled and returned a
gentle handshake. Just keep going, Marie repeated
(14:48):
to herself. Madame Amato had said that to
her twice now, and the Riddle said the same.
Just keep going. But where were they supposed to
go, and what were they supposed to do once they got there?
Marie looked down at her notebook again.
There were still so many questions that needed answering
(15:10):
about the riddles, the tile, andwhat to do next.
And she still didn't know how tofix things with Christian.
But Madame Amato was right. If they were going to solve this
mystery, she had to keep moving forward despite having a new
(15:30):
clue. Fighting amongst themselves
threatens progress on the quest. Will Christian forgive Marie and
JJ? Find out when the adventure
continues in our next episode ofAdventures on Awe Island.
