Previously, on Adventures on AweIsland, a curious piece of paper
appeared to be a map, but Marie,JJ, and Christian had no idea
what it was. A map of a curious stranger
helped them figure it out. Welcome to adventures on Awe

(00:26):
Island. Hi AA Wei Islanders, we'd like

we do. Chapter 2 The Destination
Revealed Part 1 The next day, Marie, JJ, and Christian walked
the short distance back to the library as soon as they were

(01:36):
done with school. Huddling together on the
sidewalk in front of the library, they barely noticed the
hustle and bustle of afternoon goings on around them.
They were so focused on the map it was a bit hard to see the
image on the phone screen. In the bright afternoon
sunlight, cars drove by on the street and some pulled into the

(02:01):
library parking lot, filling theair with the sound of car doors
opening and closing. Bits of conversations floated by
as people entered and exited thelibrary.
Marie, JJ and Christian ignored it all as they peered at the
image of the map on the smartphone, alternately glancing

(02:24):
up at the scene before them to make sense of the map.
In front of them was the librarybuilding, which appeared to be
at least double the size of the original building that existed
before the renovations were done10 years ago.
On the east side of the library was a large circle of flowers

(02:45):
that appeared to be in the spot where the fountain used to be,
and West of the library were multiple small oak trees that
appeared to be in the area wherethe old oak tree must have
stood. How were they supposed to follow
a map where the exact waypoints no longer existed?

(03:06):
It seemed impossible. Hang on, I'll be right back,
said JJ. Marie watched her friend dart
inside the library. Before long, JJ returned Sal's
back. Not that mysterious librarian
from yesterday. I asked about the library

(03:27):
edition that was done 10 years ago, Sal said.
The original doorway was over here where these tall glass
windows are. JJ pointed to the tall glass
windows at the center of the library.
They sparkled in the sunlight. Sal also said that the old oak

(03:48):
tree was right where that oak tree now stands.
JJ pointed to the young oak treethat was closest to them and
stood a little bigger and tallerthan the rest.
All those younger oak trees on the West side of the building
were grown from the old oak tree's acorns.

(04:08):
JJ finished Smart thinking to ask Sal.
Christian said. Now maybe we can figure out this
map. The three friends peered down
once more at the image on the smartphone.
There were three dashed lines onthe map.
It appeared as if one was leading from the original

(04:29):
doorway of the library. Another started from the east,
beginning where the fountain once stood.
The third dashed line LED from the West, the center of where
the oak tree had been. All three dashed lines converged
in one spot where there was a large X.

(04:51):
Let's each follow one dashed line until we all meet in the
middle. Marie suggested.
Christian and JJ nodded in agreement.
Marie went to the spot where theoriginal library door was.
JJ jogged to the spot where the old oak tree had stood, and
Christian headed to the circularpatch of flowers where the

(05:14):
fountain had been. OK, go.
Marie said eagerly. The three friends began walking
towards the spot where they thought their paths all might
cross, hoping it matched the X on the map.
Marie walked straight forward while JJ and Christian came in

(05:36):
on an angle, carefully timing their steps to ensure they all
would meet in the same spot at the same time.
When their paths converged, theyall stood still, uncertain what
to do next. They'd met on part of the Oval
shaped drop off area in front ofthe library.

(05:57):
If there was a buried treasure in this spot, it was covered in
pavement. That stinks.
JJ said dejectedly. No kidding.
Christian agreed. Marie remained silent, thinking
she was really disappointed too,but she was not ready to give

(06:18):
up. Were they missing some critical
piece of information or could they be misinterpreting
something? Let's try again, she suggested.
The trio returned to their spotsand repeated the process with no
luck. For the next hour, they made
every adjustment they could think of to no avail.

(06:41):
They tried counting their steps using the numbers on the map.
They tried taking bigger steps and smaller steps.
The map is just too vague to figure out what they were doing
wrong. Was the X marking something
above ground or underground? Were they starting from the

(07:03):
right landmarks? Was there something missing from
the map? There were too many uncertain
variables. Dejected, they sat down on the
grass in the shade. For a long moment, nobody spoke.
Marie wondered if they were all thinking the same thing she was.

(07:24):
What if the buried treasure was now under the pavement and they
would never be able to reach it?Let's go next door and get ice
cream and study the map some more.
Marie said with a big sigh. Amato's Ice Cream Shop was a
favorite place for library patrons to stop by after

(07:46):
visiting the library. It was a tiny mushroom shaped
shop painted a glossy mint greenwith an overhang of chocolate
brown shingles. A set of bright white wrought
iron patio furniture sat out front, welcoming visitors to
relax while they enjoyed their treats.

(08:07):
As Marie, Christian and JJ walked into Amato's, they were
greeted by a cool breeze that smelled like fresh waffle cones
and melted chocolate. The sweet scent made their
mouths water. At the counter, they perused the
selections of ice cream displayed behind the glass case

(08:27):
and found the usual favourites. Chocolate brownie, pecan mint
cookie swirl, cherry chocolate chip, peanut butter cookie
dough, banana cream pie, toastedcoconut, vanilla, and Raspberry
mint sorbet. However, on the end of the case,

(08:51):
A flavor simply labeled special caught their eye.
None of them had ever seen this ice cream before.
It was distinctive and striking, with a cream colored base, light
brown bits, and small pieces of a red fruit throughout.
What's in the mystery flavor? Christian asked.

(09:12):
Madame Amato. She was a short, wispy woman
with peppered Gray hair pinned into a neat bun at the nape of
her neck. Her light tanned skin bore deep
wrinkles that spoke to a long life of smiling at customers.
In fact, she was one of AOI Island's oldest residents and

(09:35):
everyone treasured her. Madame Amato answered
Christian's question with a twinkle in her eye and a joyful
lilt in her voice that belied her age.
It's a recipe that I've been waiting to make for a very, very
long time. It's called vanilla visiberry

(09:56):
crumble. It has vanilla bean crumbled
cinnamon streusel and fresh visiberries.
Is a berries? What are those?
JJ said with a giggle. They are small berries from a
Bush that grows only on our neighboring island.

(10:16):
Madame Amato explained. They haven't been available for
over 10 years, since before the last volcanic eruption there.
Curiosity peaked. The kids regarded each other
with an affirmative nod, then Marie stepped forward and said.
3 cups of very visibly crumble please.

(10:40):
With ice cream in hand, the trioheaded out front and seated
themselves at one of the white patio tables.
JJ took the first spoon of ice cream and LED out a MMM as soon
as it hit her mouth. That good?
Marie asked, scooping a bite of her own.
I've never tasted anything like it.

(11:02):
JJ said enthusiastically, already reaching for another
spoonful of the sweet treat. As soon as the ice cream hit
Marie's tongue, her eyes widened.
It really was one of the most unexpected ice cream flavors she
had ever tasted. Buttery notes of toasted vanilla

(11:23):
and cinnamon melted on her tongue first, followed by
occasional bursts of bright fruit that was both sweet like a
cherry and slightly tart like a cranberry at the same time.
The fruit was so delicate it seemed to disappear in her mouth
after it exploded in flavor likea firework.

(11:45):
It made her smile. Looking over at Christian, who
had also just taken his first spoonful, she could tell he was
having a similar reaction. I didn't know anybody went to
the other island. Christian said between bites.
Me neither. Said JJ.
Marie nodded in agreement. She rarely thought about the

(12:08):
other island, even though it waseasily visible from Awe Island.
From a distance, it looked quitebig and lush on the horizon.
As far as Marie knew, it was uninhabited.
There had been a volcanic eruption on one side in 2015,
the year the three kids had beenborn.

(12:30):
Other than that, Marie knew nothing.
Nobody ever talked about the other island.
It didn't even have a name, despite being so close by.
And yet somehow Madame Amato knew what grew there.
I wonder how Madame Amato got the Visibarries from the other
island? Marie said absentmindedly

(12:53):
filling her mouth with spoon after spoon of her delicious ice
cream. Don't know.
JJ mumbled through a mouthful. She too couldn't seem to eat her
ice cream fast enough. Marie finished first and felt
supremely satisfied and refreshed.
She sat down her cup with a happy sigh.

(13:14):
The ice cream had been more thanjust a tasty treat.
It had helped clear her head. Inevitably, Marie's mind drifted
back to the library map and the mysterious X.
Just like that. She felt confident again and had
a sense of what to do next. I think we should go to my house

(13:35):
and examine the original map again, she said, steady with
renewed determination. Good idea.
Christian replied without hesitation.
Let's go. JJ said and they all got up,
tossed their garbage and walked to Marie's house.
Mr. Duguay was out in the yard working on their family garden.

(13:58):
Hi kids. He greeted them, wiping his brow
with the back of a gloved hand. Hi dad, we're going to hang out
in my room for a bit. Marie told her father.
OK, He replied. Returning to the cucumber plant
he was tending. Marie began to turn towards the
house when she stopped herself mid turn, remembering how her

(14:21):
dad had just checked out some books about the plants of Awe
Island. She looked back at her father.
Uh, dad? Maria said hesitantly.
Have you ever heard of a fruit called a visiberry?
Mr. Duguay glanced up from the garden, raising an eyebrow.

(14:42):
A visiberry? He repeated.
Doesn't sound familiar. Where did you learn about that?
He asked. We have a new ice cream flavor
at Amato's. Madame Amato said it was made
with visa berries. Mr. Duguay shook his head.
Never heard of him, sweetheart. He said once more, turning his

(15:05):
gaze toward the cucumber plant. Marie looked at her friends and
shrugged. With her dad being a botanist,
it was kind of strange that he had never heard of a plant that
grew so close to home. The three went inside and
upstairs to Marie's bedroom. She retrieved her private

(15:26):
treasure box off the bookshelf, placed it on her art desk and
opened it. Inside were various mementos of
important events and people and things she held dear, including
the map. They unfolded the map on the
desk, peering at it. Nothing had changed.

(15:47):
The same faint pencil lines werepresent.
Marie ran her fingers lightly over the paper, trying to
flatten the deep, long standing creases.
That's when she noticed something new.
She felt raised ridges on the paper where no visible writing
was present. Is this a clue?

(16:09):
Oh my gosh, she said in surprise.
I think I found something. Marie darted over to her bedside
table where she'd left the book. Many magic tricks to Fool
Friends and family. Opening to the table of
contents, she scanned the list of chapters until she found what
she was looking for. She turned to the section on

(16:33):
sending secret messages using pencil and paper and read aloud
to reveal a secret message that has been indented in a piece of
paper. Take a soft lead pencil, angle
the tip to the side, and gently shade the entire surface of the
paper. The flat areas will become

(16:53):
darker and reveal the message inthe indentations in the paper.
This is called the graphite smudge method.
Marie pointed at the map on the desk.
I felt ridges sticking out on the front of the paper, so I
think there's a message on the back.
She said thoughtfully. She moved back to the desk and

(17:16):
turned the paper over so the back was facing up.
She grabbed her softest art pencil and began to gently shade
the paper where the indentationswere.
Christian and JJ watched with bated breath as Marie worked
slowly and carefully, Bit by bit, words began to appear in

(17:38):
the negative space. Find the big three.
Ignore the rest. That's the location of the
secret chest. Go to the flagpole 2 feet to the
north. Dig inches down to the 24th.
Wow, Christian said in amazement.
That changes everything. Yeah, it sure does.

(18:02):
JJ agreed. Just then Mr. Duguay called up
the stairs. JJ, Christian, it's time to go
home. Coming.
Both kids called back quickly. JJ took out her phone and
snapped a photo of the newly discovered clues.
Smart thinking. Marie said to JJ.

(18:23):
Let's try again tomorrow after school, OK?
JJ and Christian said in unison as they headed out the door.
That night, Marie could barely focus on her homework or even
her dinner. She was so excited to follow the
new clue. It confirmed that indeed they

(18:44):
had a map and there was a treasure to be found.
They were on the right track. As she laid in bed that night
trying to fall asleep, Marie's mind raced with questions.
What could the treasure be, and who left it there?
And what if someone had already found it?

(19:06):
When Marie finally fell asleep, her dreams that night were
filled with digging. She dug hole after hole after
hole, but every time she reachedfor the treasure, it vanished
from her grasp somewhere beneathAO Wei Island.
The secret was still waiting. It's an exciting time on Away

(19:32):
Island. Marie's 10th birthday finally
has arrived, and the newfound clue just might be the thing
that helps her, JJ, and Christian figure out the map and
find the treasure. Or maybe it won't.
