Entre 2017 et 2022, au moins 1,2 million de portes en bois, vendues aux Etats-Unis par les magasins Home Depot et Jeld Wen, auraient une très forte probabilité de contenir du bois d’okoumé illégalement récolté en Guinée équatoriale, selon un rapport publié par l’Environmental Investigative Agency (EIA). Ces portes sont disponibles dans les magasins Home Depot depuis avril 2023.
Ce bois serait issu d’exploitations illégales menées dans les forêts de Guinée équatoriale en complicité des hautes autorités guinéennes dont le vice-président du pays et fils du président, Teodorin Nguema Obiang. Les grumes de bois sont ensuite acheminées vers la Chine où elles sont transformées en placages et finalement exportées vers le marché international.
