Speaker 1 (00:14):
Welcome back to the AI Cafe Conversations, where we
explore the rich blend oftechnology and daily life, all
while enjoying a cup of ourfavorite brew.
I am Sahar, your AI whisperer, your guide through the intricate
world of AI.
Today, we're steering aslightly different path.

(00:34):
We are diving into the ethicaldimensions of artificial
intelligence and I touched onthat in the last episode, but I
want to go into details becauseit's a subject that we really
need to pay attention to.
How does ai affect our moralcampus?
Are we ready to tackle thetough questions ai poses to

(00:55):
society?
But before going through that,as usual, I'm gonna share with
you the new news, share with youthe new news for this week that
we have been going through withAI in general.
Nvidia is actually the value ofNVIDIA past Apple and it's

(01:20):
number one valued company in theworld now and it kind of
dislodged Apple from that place.
Speaking of Apple, um, chat gptis gonna improve siri.
Actually, apple is having aconference today, uh and the uh.
They are uh discussing the newtools, the new update that is
gonna have uh, automatic emailsand more emojis and the bugs and

(01:43):
bugs on the iPhones.
But it's also gonna gonnaannounce its partnership with
chat GPT to use it as their AItool.
The funny thing that I read thisweek is that somehow AI got
involved in miss AI.
That is a beauty pageant amongai models.

(02:06):
If you want to know anythingmore, go and check on npr.
They have these news, the otherthings about ai.
They think that ai basicallyresearch and learning exhausted
all the data they have beenseeing everything.
So it's not about just uh,throwing more, uh wikipedia
pages or some more data, butthey are running out of space.

(02:29):
But that doesn't mean thatthere is nothing else to feed it
.
There are things like reddit, which now we know that it is
getting involved into theeducation of artificial
intelligence.
There is also the videocontents that they're gonna use.
There is a lot of things thatthey still can go through and
that's why the more you getonline, especially now, the more

(02:54):
you increase your ability to bediscovered online for the
future, because SEOo searchengine optimization is actually
going to be replaced by what Icall aeo or artificial
optimization artificial aio,sorry, artificial intelligence

(03:17):
optimization.
So it's about you being foundonline.
So get online for your brandingand marketing right now and put
as much content as possible.
Um, the other thing having alot of data doesn't make it more
intelligent, and we saw that inmeta.
They entered probably the Idon't know twice the words of

(03:38):
gpt4 in there, but it's notreally better than chat gpt,
it's actually worse.
So these are all things that umare going on um, this, uh this
week.
The other things that uh, Iwanted I want to let you know
that um, zora, that sora, thatis the video part of uh,

(04:00):
artificial intelligence now andit's still in development.
Only the red teams have itactually have a competition out
of china called cling, not outof information are out yet, but
I just wanted to share it withyou.
Some of the tools that I want toleave you with today is
remember Suits, the series thatwas on USA and is coming back

(04:23):
where their star was Harvey.
Guess what?
There is actually an AIplatform for lawyers that they
prefer it on Chad, gpt, and it'sabout $2 billion valuation.
So, harvey, if you are a lawyeror to get wanted to get any

(04:43):
legal advice, not that you haveto depend on it, just the tool.
The other tool that I wanted toshare with you is called
Brilliant.
That I wanted to share with youis called Brilliant.
Brilliant offers bite-sized AIlessons that you can go to and
try to learn little bit bylittle bit what you want on AI,
and it has a free trial for 30days.
Of course, after that you haveto pay for it.

(05:09):
These are a couple of toolsthat I wanted to share with you
today.
The other thing is, like I said, apple is getting is getting
chat GPT now instead of series.
So let's go back to our podcastand what we are discussing about

(05:32):
the ai and ethics navigatingthe gray areas.
Let's start with a recentheadline.
A tech company just unveiled anai system that helps in hiring
processes by analyzing videointerviews.
It sounds helpful.
It sounds great, right, lifewill be easier.

(05:53):
It sounds helpful.
It sounds great, right, lifewill be easier.
Uh, I'm not sure about that.
But here is where it gets tricky.
How do we ensure that this aiisn't biased?
We all have biases and rememberwe are the one feeding this ai.
What if its programmingunintentionally favors certain
demographic characteristics overothers?

(06:15):
Ah, this is what sometimesworries me in all uh that stuff
when, when AI with technology, you know we get every sip of our
coffee comes with a side ofinsight bias in ai.
Consider that when you'rehiring someone, I always say

(06:40):
this in order to have a fairinterview, we need to have a
diverse panel, because if we aregoing to use ai as a hiring
tool that will be trained onhistorical employment data tool
that will be trained onhistorical employment data, it
might be efficient, but what ifthis data carries years of

(07:01):
unintended bias against certaingroups?
Suddenly, the ai isn't just atool.
It's actually a gatekeeper,potentially perpetuating old
prejudices under the disguise ofimpartiality, old prejudices
under the disguise ofimpartiality, and that's why I'm
not sure about that.
To understand this better, let'sexamine, for example, a case

(07:22):
study.
Maybe not has to do withemployment, but the use in ai
and loan approvals.
Recent report shows that aisystems designed to assess
Credit worthiness have sometimesmirrored societal biases.
The systems analyze patterns indata, but when that data
reflects historical inequalities, the AI's conclusion may do the

(07:47):
same, and that's why I'm sayingwe have to take it with a grain
of salt.
Everything is still new.
Why I'm saying we have to takeit with a grain of salt.
Everything is still new.
That doesn't mean that we don'tuse AI, but we need to start
understanding.
You know what we should expectand how we should navigate it.
The right way to make sure notto do the same mistakes that

(08:10):
humans do.
So, basically, this brings ustoday to the heart of the matter
that we are trying to talk, andit's very important.
It's the importance ofdeveloping ethical AI.
Just like how we choose coffeethat is ethically sourced, we
need to think about how our AIsystems are sourced, in other

(08:30):
words, how they are developed, what data they use and the
values they embody.
To unpack this, let's consideranother example AI in law
enforcement.
Ai can help predict wherecrimes may happen or identify
suspects faster than ever Again.

(08:53):
But here is the ethical bluehow much surveillance is too
much?
Where do we draw the linebetween safety and privacy?
Now, ethics isn't just aboutpreventing harm.
It's also about ensuring good.
Think about AI in healthcare.

(09:13):
Ai can diagnose diseases fromscans, like I said in the last
podcast, often catching thingshuman doctors might miss.
This capability could savecountless lives, but it also
raises questions.
Who is responsible if an aimakes a mistake?
How do we handle consent whenAI is involved?

(09:40):
For something more global in AIand surveillance.
Cities around the world areemploying AI for public safety,
from smart CCTV cameras that cantrack abnormal activities to
algorithms that allocate policeresources more effectively.
Abnormal activities toalgorithms that allocate police
resources more effectively.
The ethical dilemma, balancingsafety with privacy.
Again, how do we ensure suchsystems don't infringe in on our

(10:05):
rights or target vulnerablepopulations in a
disproportionate manner?
All these are questions that weneed to start asking now, before
it's actually too late, and youknow I'm an advocate of AI, but
also we cannot turn a blind eyeon other stuff.

(10:25):
So engaging in these questionsisn't just academic.
It's crucial for building aworld where technology enhances
our lives without compromisingour values.
It's about steering the ship ofinnovation responsibly,
ensuring that as we set into thefuture, we are not only guided

(10:47):
by what AI can do, but also bywhat it should do.
These are all questions, like Isaid, that we need to start
thinking about.
It's still early and we stillhave control over that.
These examples that I sharedwith you.

(11:08):
It brings us to actually acrucial point.
Like I said, as technologiesbecome integrals to our
societies, we need to establishrobust ethical guidelines, and
governance Frameworks isessential, and this includes
transparent AI operations, equitable data practices and

(11:31):
accountable AI deployment.
As we wind down our sessiontoday, think about how the
technology you use aligns withyour personal ethics, from the
smartphones in our pockets tothe smart devices in our home,
each piece of technology carrieswith it a story not just of

(11:53):
innovation, but of decisionsmaking and values.
So how do we move forward?
By engaging in conversationslike these, by staying informed
and by demanding transparencyand fairness in how AI is
developed and used.

(12:13):
It's about shaping AItechnologies, not just for what
they can do, but, like I saidbefore, like what they should do
.
So engage with these ideas, discuss them with your
communities and perhaps the nexttime you interact with AI, you
will see it through a morecritical lens.
It's not about ignoring AI.

(12:34):
It's not about being scared ofAI.
It's not about putting our headin the sand.
It's not about any of that.
We should learn and educateourselves more AI so we can
mitigate the risks, the dangersand raise more ethics.
Thank you for joining me inthis thoughtful exploration of

(12:56):
AI Cafe Conversations.
Don't forget to subscribe andI'd love to hear your thoughts
on how you view ethics in therealm of AI.
Until next time, keep yourcoffee ethical and your
questions deep.
This is Sahar Andrade, your AIWhisperer.

(13:16):
Till we meet next time.
