Album Club with the Ziggies

Album Club with the Ziggies

Welcome to the Album Club! Each week one of us (the Ziggys) takes turns picking a new album to listen to; at the end of the week we have discussions about our thoughts on the songs, album as a whole, each other's tastes, and a million tangents! Eventually we'll listen to all of our favourite (and not) albums and learn a lot about music, culture, and each other. Enjoy!

We Pakin this week with Jamil's pick, Straight Outta Compton by N.W.A! A classic album with good rap, bad rap, penis rap galore, not to mention "unapologetic violence and misogyny" that makes me scared to play it in class enemy suburbia.

Zak's quirky goats, They Might Be Giants. Flood, one of their most famous albums. We listened to it and it was pretty good, but not as good as triangle man.

Penis, penis, penis. That's everyone's favourite word this week in describing my pick for this week, Genie Classic by Genie High! An album full of pop and experimental sounds, it's pretty cool, though how you feel is up to you to find out.

Love, pain, growth. Grown-folk music and dang music. Optimus Prime. Dive into Iisha lore and some of our craziest tangents yet with Freudian by Daniel Caesar, chosen by Iisha.

Scott has chosen a masterpiece, Donkey Kong Goes Home by Dana Walden, which is not a videogame soundtrack but a standalone musical narrative. This album is truly like nothing you have ever heard before, and not only is this kid oriented album a piece of history, featuring the first official Mario voice, but it also discusses themes such as bondage, psyops, commercial real-estate, and capitalism.

Phoneboy, the sequel! Iisha picked the sophomore album of the Hoboken softboy alt-pop band Phoneboy, Moving Out, hoping it would spark the same joy their previous self-titled album Phoneboy did. It did not. Consensus of the Ziggies is that this album is a little too generic, a little less sincere, and a little boring overall, a "guess we've gotta put out another one" money grab of obligation rather than the fresh eyed musicianship ...

The cultural divide is deep with this one: Zak's pick, Everything Goes Numb by Streetlight Manifesto! A moving punk classic full of melancholy and the will to live, or Johnny Test Sonic music for ten year olds? You decide!

CALIFORNIA HERE WE GO. CALIFORNIA HERE WE GO. The Ziggies have visited me in California, and we were there for a wild night in Orange County! In this episode we discussed Kiss My Superbowl Ring by the punk duo of The Garden, along with a discussion of how we were fighting for our lives at the Garden concert. Jamil was horrified.

Another special guest- Gil! His pick: J. Cole! Was it good? I thought so, but some called it aggressively mid. What do you think-? Let us know! Tune in to this especially fun episode of Album Club.

We've had another guest star this week-Brian! who picked Circles Around the Sun by DISPATCH! This is some truly American music, filled with rock, folk, country, roots, blues, and whatever else tunes and influences that come together for a pretty good experience. Tune in to hear Zak fall for fake news!

GC pick! This week's listen was MOTOMAMI by ROSALIA, a glittery, Berganlie-y, Spanish album that Scott defined as the fine line between Sewerslvt and Shakira.

Iisha pulled the Zak classic and backpedaled on John "Villain" Legend, so we ended up listening to Big Baby DRAM by DRAM this week! Full of hits and comfort songs, DRAM has a great mix of cute and certifiable lyrics and tunes for both hype and mellow happy days.

Kid Quill part 2 baby, chosen by who else but Scott. Quite the palette cleanser after To Pimp A Butterfly pt II, but a fun, different type of rap for us to explore.

Long at last, we Re:visit one of our first ever Album Club picks with To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar. The climatic finale to Jamil's Kendrick arc, tune in to hear how the Ziggies have grown and changed- or not- over the years, and what this all time great album has to offer to the then and now.

Australian politics, environmentalism, and pure righteous passion: these are the things that make Zak's pick this week, Earth And Sun And Moon by Midnight Oil, a Zak household classic. Zak was raised on Midnight Oil from the womb and loves these tunes that make you want to freedom dance. I do too! Tune in and enjoy.

The wombo combo! This week I picked Room 25 by Noname, one of my favourite artists, and a beautiful album that hits you in the feels and makes you think. This album reflects Noname's growth and the changes in her life, and reflects strongly on the present, conscious living, and acceptance of yourself and the world, past and present. Which Noname album is your favourite?

Mark as Played

A memento mori album that some people think are LoFi. Chosen by Iisha, Telefone by Noname.

Mark as Played

Scott dug ditches to this album, and Zak is racist against it. It's Can't Say I Ain't Country by Florida Georgia Line, a pop country album about some guys making excuses about buying Teslas and singing noncommittal lyrics. Tune in, y'all.

Shakira is a psyop.

For Daft Punk's 10th retirement anniversary, Zak helped the Ziggies commemorate with his pick, Random Access Memories by Daft Punk. A departure from their usual style of repetitive, synth and sample heavy music, this album features many human and personal touches that brought something new and special to Daft Punk for their final album, as well as some very special songs for Zak. Tune in and Get Lucky.
