call this time.
According to the Tongxu, whichis an ancient Chinese almanac,
may 6 is the first day of summer.
So just to clarify in the West,summer solstice is often

heralded as the first day ofsummer, but this is actually
when the days start to getshorter because yin is growing.
So summer solstice marks theheight of yang as the longest
day of the year.
This is the zenith of yangenergy.
So now, as we are right betweenspring equinox and summer

solstice, it's the beginning ofsummer, as we have about six
weeks left until until summersolstice, when the days actually
get shorter.
So this is the time for us toreally launch into summertime
activities and doing andproductivity.
It's the time to really conductourselves in a way as nature
(01:08):
does.
So sometimes I think in theWest there's a prevalent
tendency to believe we aremagically outside of the cycle
of nature, that somehow, youknow, these agricultural
societies perhaps heraldeddifferent kinds of shifts in
(01:29):
seasonal conduct.
But now we're advanced andbeyond this idea of conducting
ourselves in accordance withseasonal qi.
But this kind of arrogance isexpensive, not only to our
personal health but to ourplanetary health.
We are part of nature and whenwe conduct ourselves in this way
(01:51):
, it brings longevity and a deepembodiment of what it means to
actually be a human being.
There is a timing to everythingand when we conduct ourselves
with this fundamental idea ofdoing things at the right time,
it brings about the nourishmentof our destiny.
So frequently in the West qi isdefined as energy, but really

qi is about time.
It holds the changing of theseasons and moon and other
cycles as governing our conduct,and when we're in accordance
with the seasonal qi we prosper.
And when we disobey these qicycles it brings decline and
premature aging.
So looming would say there'stwo major causes of death the

first is birth and the second isfailure to live in accordance
with the seasonal qi.
So we're going to talk a littlebit in this podcast about spring
and summer and the differencebetween those.
Where the young qi was immaturein early spring, now it's

reaching its maturation andthere is completion all around
us.
So summer's conduct canactually be more forceful than
in spring and certainly than inearly spring when there was very
little qi available for us.
And when we talk about conducthere, we're not talking about a
moral conduct like a Protestantor Judeo-Christian idea of right

and wrong.
This is simply a resultant.
When we conduct ourselves inaccordance with the qi around us
, it brings health and longevity, and when we don't, it brings
the other thing.
So the heraldic animal ofsummer is the red phoenix, this
enormous, magical bird whoseradiance is the sun.

It's the ascendance of youngrising out of the cold, dark
devastation of winter.
And this red phoenix pulls alldormancy into action.
We have about six weeks beforeyoung begins to decline and Yin
begins its growth towards wintersolstice.
So this is a time to fully diveinto whatever it is that you

are devoting this year to and befully active in participating
in your growth.
It is in accordance with natureto plow full steam ahead with
projects, ideas, resolutions andplans.
The nai jing says three monthsof summer are a time of splendid
.
The naging says the threemonths of summer are a time of

splendor and growth.
When all things fruit, anythingis possible when we align
ourselves with a chi availablefor us.
Now there is the possibility ofthe nourishment of our destiny,
of what it is we want in theworld.
In the botanical environment wecan observe plants becoming
themselves.
(04:58):
That which was dormant and notvisible in the winter is now in
a state of splendor, soeverything can flourish in the
summertime.
There is enough sunshine thatcommunication between the sky
and the earth is fully activated.
So moisture is being drawn upfrom deep within the earth by
that heavenly yang chi.
The plants that are reaching upfor the sun are using that fire
(05:22):
of heaven to suck up the yin,this moisture, in the ground.
This is happening all around usand we also have this
possibility available for us.
So this hot chi of summer iswhat can bring about the
completion of the plans andideas that we had in the spring.

On the other side, if we don'tact ourselves in accordance with
the summer chi that's availablefor us, we stumble the naging
says, dissipate the mandates ofsummer, and it will bring harm
to the heart and produce feveror trapped heat in the autumn.
Inappropriate behavior in thesummer will create deficiency at
autumn harvest.

We are part of the seasonalchange and when we follow this
dance of life we preserve ourvitality.
Even though there is so muchabundance available to us right
now, it is possible to squanderthis abundance with excessive
ambition, rigidity, powerseeking and aggression.
All of these kinds of emotionsdamage the heart, mind or the

shen, we say in Chinese medicine, and this in turn leads to
premature aging.
I think we often see this inkind of like the stereotype of
sort of a man in his 50s or 60sthat's having heart attacks and
you know, it's just like going,going, working, working, working
hasn't really had that time torest in the winter months.

So spring is the time when thenew ideas are generated and
summer is the time that theyreally get likes and manifest.
As we age, the differentiationbetween spring and summer
becomes even more vital.
So having the freshness ofsprouting new ideas in the
spring is actually what keeps usyoung.

So if we don't practice thespring newness, we get older
faster and we need to let go inthe springtime and allow
innovation in and as we age.
This doesn't necessarily needto be productive.
It could be restorative new,fresh ideas but it does need to
contain that new, young.
When the fresh young comes in,it starts to solidify and press

new ideas to replace the oldones.
And if this process fails totake place, summer manifests
this heat damage and we can evensee this in the autumn,
carrying through all the way tothe autumn.
So clinically we can see thisheat damage is premature aging.
If we are conducting ourselvesthe same throughout the year,

perhaps a 40 hour a week job, 12months a year, what is
generated as successful in thesummer, in the wintertime
actually is an emptiness and adeficiency.
We say that a small fire warmsthe hearth and a large fire
burns the house down.
Fire is often a strong, verystrong in youth, but we must be

cautious about it as we matureso that we do not let it blaze
and deplete our kidney chi.
If we cultivated young properlyin the spring, with education,
such as visiting shamans,consulting the oracle, visiting
wise people, reading books thisis the way we can cultivate
young in the spring Then thesummers pattern of young can be
(08:48):
that of acquiring and growing.
So it will then be moreproductive rather than being a
fire that's out of control andblazing A healthy young in the
summer time.
It's a kind of a dominance thatcan afford a mildness and a
generosity.
Now I'm going to read a quotefrom the naging.
(09:11):
The three months of summer arecalled the time of splendor and
growth.
At summer solstice, yangchireaches an apex and yinchi
emerges.
Yin and yangco mingle and allliving things and beings prosper
.
Yangchi energizes all phenomenaand yin gives them shape.

Because of this yin yangco,mingling all things flower and
fruit.
People, like all phenomena, areincluded.
They should follow the seasonalchi to preserve vitality.
I'm going to talk a little bitabout exercise.
Just like in the spring, it'simportant to go to sleep when

it's dark and rise at dawn.
It's counseled to wear looseclothing and untied hair and do
your practice at sunrise tograsp this fresh yangchi
available to us.
This is the time to go a littlebit further in your exercise
and train a little harder andmaybe push a little bit more.

Out of any time in the year,sweating will help move any
internal stagnation out of usand the counsel is to then rub
the sweat into the body briskly,which helps polish the
protective chi or the wei chi.
It's strongly emphasized todrink water in the morning and
to not rise late.

On an emotional conduct level,this is an important time to
avoid anger and stay calm.
Looming would say, pushing thebody a little bit and exercise
is okay, but not the emotions.
If we are quick to anger, weinflame the pernicious side of
yang, which manifests as aaggressiveness and violence.

As far as what to eat, we cansee all around us these flowers
that are blooming and they diequite quickly, especially with
the heat.
Their blooming is a kind ofcelebration of this
communication between heaven andearth.
But these small flowers do nothave enough chi to last all the

way to the autumn they take.
The things that take the wholesummer to grow are more complex
and nourishing and thus stable.
So going into the autumn timewe have pumpkins and squash
which have so much chi they canbe stored all winter.
The flowers we see are harderto store, at least fresh,
(11:41):
without drying them, and it'simportant to eat a lot of greens
this time of year to replenishthe fluids and to drink water
regularly to avoid any kind ofdrying action from the summer
heat.
With children it's important tonot force maturity too quickly
(12:02):
on them.
This is important all throughthe year, but especially in the
summertime where immature yangis celebrated.
So too much exposure to mediamovies, news and magazines which
have weird content in them willcause our children to grow up
(12:24):
too quickly.
Children should beirresponsible.
This experience of innocenceand incompleteness of children
is what generates new ideas andhelps us have change in our
world.
If we push kids to grow up toofast, we get a dominant yang as

they become adults, that becomesthe energy running our society.
It's malignant and this happensby.
One of the ways this can beencouraged is by pushing
responsibility on children tooearly Summer is the time of
passion.
Hot fire, summer chi, isassociated not only with the

ordinary sense of personal joy,but also the pleasure that comes
in our contact with others.
So passion is welcomed in thesummer.
In pagan traditions, bel-tainor mayday was the time when
people lit fires and stayed upall night, making love next to
the fire as a blessing to theautumn harvest and the spring

crops or the summer crops.
One can also see this as acelebration and a calibration
with the hot chi of summer,which can manifest as this
passion.
The council of the Zhang JishanYun Xu is to enter the palace
from evening to midnight,otherwise it injures the chi.
So entering the palace refersto sexual intercourse, which is

most beneficial during thegrowing yin time of day, in the
evening between sunset andmidnight.
Access modesty during summer isthe manifestation of a
malevolent yin leftover fromwinter.
So there's no need to be overlymodest in the summertime.
Save that modesty for thewintertime, when we're wanting

to conserve our chi.
This is the time to let yourhair down to have more wildness
in your conduct.
On that token, gatheringsduring the summer can be a
collective demonstration of thisjoy of nature and this natural

fire brings a kind of unity.
Through this collectivedemonstration of joy, we can
unite differences through thiswarmth, this heat, such as
living and dead, ancestors andchildren, young and old, woman
and man, through this loving,warm and happy conduct.
It is the season to be morefree and expressing your
(14:58):
feelings, thoughts andpreferences with clarity and
just to be really clear.
This is not an aggression,which is a kind of malevolent
yin.
This is a time for generosity,abundance and strengthening
bonds with our community.
The Zhang Jishan Yinxu counselsus to wash the hair frequently
during the summer, but to notbathe often.

Bathing meaning languishing ina tub of warm water, because
this is not in accordance withthe faster pace of summer chi.
So short showers, probablyending with cold water at the
end, letting the head be freshwith that cold water or warm
water, but not sitting aroundfor long hours in a tub or sauna

or sweat.
