This is a space for women whoare embracing change, building
confidence and living withcreativity and grace.
So let's get started, hey guys, and welcome back to All About
Hair.
If we haven't been introducedyet, I'm Denise, a hairstylist
and salon owner with over threedecades of behind the chair
(01:07):
experience, and today we'retalking about something so many
of you have asked about weak, brittle, breaking hair.
But first let me take you backto a moment.
This just happened not too longago.
A longtime client slid into mychair and her eyes were just
(01:28):
wide with panic and she held upher hair tie like it had, like
personally betrayed her orsomething, and she whispered my
ponytail just snapped off again.
Yeah, her hair was limp, fragile and it was breaking
pretty quickly.
(01:48):
Sarah's in her late forties,juggling teenagers, a full-time
job, hormones and hot tools, andher hair is waving a white flag
.
It is surrendering.
Does this sound familiar?
If your strands have beensending SOS signals, then this
episode is your rescue guide.
(02:09):
Okay, so let's talk about why.
Why is your hair brittle in thefirst place?
Breakage doesn't just happenovernight and it's usually a
slow buildup of stress andneglect.
Here's some of the most commonreasons your hair might be
brittle.
(02:30):
Number one, and this is usuallythe number one reason why
over-processing Whether it iscoloring or bleaching or
relaxing it can really stripyour hair of its natural
proteins.
And did you know that, even ifyou get glosses and toners too
often, that it can alsocontribute to this as well?
(02:53):
So just make sure what you'redoing Well, we'll get to that,
okay, we'll get to how toprotect your hair, all right.
Number two heat damage.
So if you're styling your hairevery single day with hot tools
without heat protection, thisliterally cooks your cuticle.
(03:16):
If your hair feels dry or, evenworse, if it smells burnt, this
might be.
Why?
Yeah, all right.
The third reason hormonalshifts.
Oh my goodness.
This is especially relevant forwomen over 40.
Perimenopause, menopause,thyroid issues and postpartum
(03:40):
changes can drastically affectyour hair's health.
Then let's talk about your dietand hydration.
Yeah, hair is made of protein.
So if your diet is lackingessential nutrients, like
everybody who's on these dietshots and injections, and you're
(04:03):
not eating anything, or ifyou're chronically dehydrated
because you're not drinkingenough water, your hair will
suffer.
And then let's talk about harshproducts that you may be using
on your hair Shampoos withsulfates or alcohol, heavy
sprays or even essential oils.
(04:23):
You're thinking they're goodfor you, but high concentrations
can actually strip moisture outof your hair and damage your
hair over time.
So bottom line is your hairspeaks the truth about your
health, your habits.
Your habits and your products.
(04:51):
Yeah, all right.
Now let's talk about where thisall starts.
Okay, so the strength starts atthe root of the hair.
Think of your scalp and yourskin, of your scalp, as is the
soil in a garden.
You can't grow plants inunhealthy soil, and the same
goes for your hair.
So let's talk about some waysthat you might want to get your
(05:11):
scalp in shape.
First thing scalp exfoliation.
Do you even know what this is?
It's like taking a scrub andactually massaging it into your
scalp.
So you could either do a weeklyscalp scrub or you could take a
brush and do it as well.
And what this does?
(05:32):
It helps remove buildup and itunclogs your hair follicles.
Really, it really does work andit feels really good too.
Which leads me to thecirculation, the importance of
circulation and generalcleansing.
So daily scalp massages.
We talked about this in thepodcast about thinning hair, but
(06:02):
daily scalp massage boosts yourblood flow, which actually
helps your hair grow.
Plus, it's super relaxing.
Another thing you want to do isyou want to avoid over washing.
Did you know that shampooingtoo often can actually strip
away the oil, the natural oils, out of your hair?
(06:22):
Drip away the natural oils outof your hair.
You really want to try, if youcan, to wash every two to three
days, if not further in between.
Myself, I wash about every fivedays.
Side note I hate washing myhair.
I hate it's not washing my hair.
I hate blow drying my hair.
Styling my hair Isn't thatweird.
(06:44):
Yeah, I know All right.
Another thing to think about youwant to make sure that you are
going sulfate free.
The sulfates you hear this, youknow all over the place, and so
what the heck is it?
Sulfates are actually harshdetergents.
They actually cause the bubblesin your shampoo and that
(07:06):
actually, over time, weakensyour hair and it can dry out
your scalp.
It actually can cause theopposite of what you're trying
to do Too much sulfates or toomuch detergent or too much
stripping of your hair and yourscalp actually causes your scalp
to become oilier over timebecause it's compensating for
the dryness that you're doing.
(07:27):
That's a whole otherconversation.
Okay, how do we rebuild this?
Well, we want to rebuild yourhair with protein and moisture.
So let's break down the sciencewithout getting too nerdy.
Okay, your hair needs a balanceof protein and moisture to stay
strong.
So what can you do?
(07:47):
Protein treatments If your hairstretches and snaps and you
could do this yourself just bypulling out a piece of hair and
stretch it.
And if it stretches and then itsnaps real quick, you probably
(08:07):
need more protein.
Okay, so what to look for?
You want to look for keratin, collagen or amino acid
treatments, and these will be inthe ingredients of whatever
product you're using.
But if your hair is feelingrough, dry or brittle, you want
(08:28):
to go for moisture, likemoisture masks.
You want to look for sheabutter, aloe and glycerin.
Those are your friends, okay.
So how do you find the balance?
Because too much protein canmake your hair stiff and too
much moisture can make it feelmushy, and the key is
alternating treatments andpaying attention to how your
(08:49):
hair feels.
Think of it like this Proteinis the bricks and the moisture
is the mortar that holds thebricks together, and your hair
needs both to build a strongfoundation.
You can kind of see that rightNow.
(09:09):
Let's talk about your dailyhabits, because your daily
habits make or break your hair.
Because your daily habits makeor break your hair.
What you do every day makes adifference.
So, first off I say this overand over and over again always,
(09:30):
always, use a heat protectantbefore you blow dry, flat iron
or curl your hair.
I don't know how many people Italk to that almost all of them
don't use a heat protectant.
Don't even think about it.
It's almost like you shouldhave it built into your hair
care routine.
Okay, and another thing is yourbrushing techniques.
(09:51):
Oh, my gosh, it kills me to seemy daughter brush her hair,
because she takes a brush andshe starts at the root of her
hair and she just startssnagging it down and wonders why
it hurts and why it's alltangly.
I'm like, oh my gosh, don't dothat.
Always use a wide tooth comb, especially on wet hair, and
(10:13):
always start at the ends whenyou're detangling, and always
start at the ends when you'redetangling.
If you're detangling your hair, start at the ends with your
comb and start combing uptowards the root of your hair,
never from the roots to the ends.
Another thing you could do isconsider switching to a satin or
a silk pillowcase.
This really does believe it ornot helps reduce friction while
(10:41):
you sleep.
And then you also want to makesure that you're tying your hair
up loosely or braid it beforeyou, especially if you have long
hair before you go to bed orbefore your workouts.
You definitely don't want to goto bed.
Oh my gosh, oh my gosh.
Do not go to bed with wet hairin a ponytail.
My gosh, oh my gosh, do not goto bed with wet hair in a
(11:03):
ponytail.
You will wake up with snappedoff hair.
You'll wonder why.
Why is all my hair breaking off?
It's because of your.
First of all, wet hair is veryfragile, and you then go into
bed with a ponytail.
If you want your hair off yourface, do a loose braid, or you
can do a loose ponytail with.
You know those scrunchies, um,but yeah, uh, uh.
(11:27):
That's one of my pet peeves, sorry.
So just remember, it's not whatyou put on your hair, it's how
you treat your hair day in andday out.
These micro habits can add upto big results.
Okay, let's talk about productrecommendations and what to
avoid.
What ingredients are you goingto be looking for when it comes
(11:49):
to product shopping?
Remember, knowledge is power,right?
So you want to look for thesewords keratin, which is
hydrolyzed proteins.
That's going to be the buildingblocks for making your hair
stronger.
Keratin, because your hair isprotein.
You want to look for aloe veryhealing glycerin, and panthenol
(12:21):
and panthenol.
And then you also want to lookfor biotin, niacin and caffeine,
and those are especially greatfor your scalp health.
The things that you want toavoid numero uno would be
sulfates definitely sulfates.
They are so stripping and sodrying.
Then you also want to look outfor the drying alcohols in your
styling products.
Now, there are good alcoholsand there are drying alcohols.
(12:44):
I'm probably going to have tomake a whole podcast or video on
that subject.
Then you also want to avoidheavy silicones.
This can actually build up andweigh down your hair.
There's actually a product lineout there I'm not going to name
(13:04):
names, but it is definitelyknown to have heavy silicones in
it and their claim is it makesyour hair shiny, which it does.
However, over time, those heavysilicones just coat your hair
with almost like a waxy buildup.
We've actually done videosbefore in the salon where you
(13:26):
can take the hair strand andscrape the scissors against it
and it just comes off.
You could see the coating justcome on, coming off the hair and
how you get that off the hair.
Is you want to do a detoxifyingshampoo, something that's really
, really going to get everythingoff of your hair?
(13:47):
Euphora has one that's urgentrepair shampoo Fabulous.
It doesn't strip the moistureout of your hair.
In fact, it feels so wonderful.
It's kind of got a menthol-ykind of thing.
But if you feel like your hairis being weighed down because
you've been using this certainproduct which will be, I'm not
(14:09):
going to name it Just ask yourstylist for a deep cleansing
shampoo.
I'm sure they'll recommendsomething.
And if you're loving thatproduct line and you don't want
to change.
Fine, just know that you'regoing to have some heavy buildup
on your hair and you're justgoing to have to get it off your
(14:30):
hair at least every I don'tknow third shampoo or something,
so it doesn't weigh your hairdown.
But one caveat it could bebuilding up on your scalp as
well, which can suffocate thehair follicle, which in turn
could cause hair loss.
So up to you, I would just getget myself a professional
shampoo, conditioner and productproducts to use my on my hair
(14:53):
If I were you okay to use my onmy hair If I were you Okay.
My go-to recommendations Ifyou're really concerned about
brittle hair, weak hair, theurge the euphora again, you know
it's my favorite product lineEuphora urgent repair mask
phenomenal.
Phenomenal.
(15:14):
Their mask phenomenal.
We used to give this mask, notgive.
Allow people to purchase thismask.
If they came in and they hadtheir hair over-processed for
whatever reason, like bleach, orthey went somewhere and they
want to come in and get theirhair colored but their hair is
just like no, it's falling offyour head.
(15:36):
We would send them home withthis mask and we would say do
this every shampoo and it wouldactually build up the proteins
back into their hair and youcould feel the strength coming
back into their hair.
A phenomenal product.
Phenomenal.
If you're into Olaplex, olaplexnumber three, you could use
that.
I've never used that, but Ihear good things about it.
(15:58):
Um, or you can use a leave-inspray.
Euphora's line has FortifyFabulous.
It's got protein in it.
It kind of gives you littlebuilding blocks back in your
hair.
Love it, love it.
All right.
Here's one thought when do youknow when it's time to just give
(16:21):
up and trim it off and startfresh?
Because sometimes the kindestthing you could do for your hair
is just to start over.
Yeah, if it's really, reallytorn up, so if your ends are
splitting up the strand and it'stangling constantly and I'm not
talking about just fine hair, that's always tangly, I'm
(16:42):
talking about this is a newthing after you've had some kind
of chemical process to it andit's just tangling all the time
and you just can't seem to getcontrol of your hair it might be
time for a trim, might be timefor a really good trim.
It doesn't mean you have to gointo a pixie or anything.
It just means that you need tostart a little bit fresh Now.
(17:04):
Trimming your hair or cuttingyour hair.
It doesn't mean that you'relosing you know your looks.
It just means giving your haira fresh start so your stylist
can actually help you create alook that's flattering for you
and still let your hair growback stronger than ever.
You just need to start freshwith some better products.
(17:30):
Okay, so here's my finalthoughts.
Stronger hair doesn't happenovernight, but it does happen.
One habit, one product and onehealthy choice at a time, and
you deserve hair that reflectsyour strength, your confidence
