Speaker 1 (00:00):
Have you ever spent
an hour perfecting your blowout,
only to step outside and feelit puff up, frizz out or fall
flat in five minutes?
You're not alone and you're notpowerless.
Today, we're going to talkabout the humidity.
Yes, summer is here.
My friends and I have so manypeople asking me what can they
(00:22):
do about the frizz, so we'regoing to talk about that today.
Welcome to All About Hair, wherewe talk, shop, share stories
and spill the secrets behindgreat hair and a great career.
I'm your host, denise Kylitz, aformer salon owner, educator
and a lifelong hair crusader.
(00:43):
Whether you're a new stylistbuilding your book or just
someone who loves learning aboutall things hair, you're in the
right place.
Hey there, welcome back to theshow.
I don't know about you, but, man, it has been hot and humid
(01:04):
here in Virginia and if you'reexperiencing this and you're
trying to look halfway decentwith your hair, it's a struggle.
It is a struggle.
The summer humidity is theultimate blowout killer.
I was telling my friend theother day I don't even bother
(01:24):
blowing out my hair in thesummertime.
I wear it curly every singleday.
What's the point?
But you know, there are sometimes that I would like it to
look smoother.
But even with professionalstyling, that heat and that
moisture when you step outside,it could ruin your hair.
If you're like a lot of womenand like me, you probably feel
(01:45):
like it's pointless to evenbother styling during the summer
months.
But let's not.
Let's not do that.
Let's still try to look ourbest.
So I'm going to share some waysthat you can do that today, and
then I'm going to answer someof the questions that I've been
hearing.
That might give you some ideason what you can personally do
too.
And if you have something thatyou've been doing that helps you
(02:08):
through this humid weather andyour hair's looking great, put
it in our show notes.
Everybody wants to know.
I mean, hey, we're a communityhere and we need to share all
the secrets at work.
Let's get to this.
Most people don't even knowwhich products actually work
against humidity, and I do getthat question a lot.
(02:29):
Is there really products outthere?
Yes, there are actual productsout there that block the
humidity from getting into yourhair.
They're anti-frizz serums.
A lot of the product lines outthere have something that you
can use, and also, using thewrong type of brush or
(02:53):
over-drying or skipping the prepwork ruins the look before you
even get started blow drying.
So we're going to talk aboutthose.
Also, a lot of you don't wantto use products on your hair
because it says it is heavy orsticky.
But you're using the wrongproducts Because most of you
rely on dry shampoo or hairspray.
Even those don't hold upagainst this humidity that we've
(03:14):
been feeling and it doesn'thold up against the sweating at
the hairline, things like that.
So we're going to talk aboutwhat products actually work and
what you should be using.
First things first.
Start with the right prep ofyour hair.
You want to use a humidityresistant shampoo and
conditioner and you know I loveEuphora.
(03:34):
They actually have a humidityresistant shampoo and
conditioner in their smoothingline, so look for that.
If you need the link, you willfind the link to Euphora
products in my show notes.
And if you don't really wantthe feel of a heavy mousse or a
gel, you want to apply alightweight anti-frizz serum.
(03:55):
And you want to make sure, after you shampoo your hair, you
want to only towel blot, do notrough dry it, just towel blot
it with your towel before blowdrying to minimize any frizz.
You don't want to cause thefrizz before you actually blow
dry the hair.
A nice lightweight anti-frizzserum.
A lot of people love the JohnFrida one.
(04:17):
I have that link on my Amazonstore Again, my links are in the
show note.
But that's a rather inexpensiveone that you can get.
Tip number two you have to blowdry the right way.
You don't just flip upside downand start blow drying the heck
out of your hair, talk aboutcausing frizz.
That will cause frizz.
If you want a professionallooking blowout, you want to use
(04:40):
a round ceramic brush forsmoothness round ceramic and
always blow dry in sections.
What I tend to always do is Ido rough dry to get about 80% of
the wetness out of the hairfirst, dry to get about 80% of
the wetness out of the hairfirst.
(05:00):
But when I rough dry I actuallystill put that nozzle on my
blow dryer and I rough dry fromthe roots to the ends in the
direction of the cuticle.
So roots to the end pick uplike one inch sections and then
I rough dry and I'm really blowdrying the roots to get volume.
And then I'll go in there withmy round ceramic brush and
always start from the bottom up,and what I mean by that is
(05:22):
after you've got the 80% ofwetness out of your hair.
Then I take a section, I put myfingers behind my ears and I
part my hair to the O-bone orclose to it and I get all that
hair up and I start blow dryingmy nape area first and I use the
round brush and I blow that andyou want to make sure that
(05:43):
you're pointing the nozzledownward to seal that cuticle
flat and you want to make sureit's a hundred percent dry.
If you leave any moisture inthere, that's just going to be
frizz.
I'm blow drying my nape areaand I do it in like two or three
sections and then I'll let downa little bit more hair.
Do that.
Let down a little bit more hair, do that and then I have the
top.
That's how I do it, and themore systematic you do it, the
(06:06):
easier it is actually to blowdry your hair.
So you want to lock all thisblow drying in with the right
products.
You want to seal the style witha heat protectant and humidity
shield spray and you also wantto use, after you blow dry, a
cool shot at the end of eachsection to lock in the shine and
the shape.
Now, if your blow dryer doesnot have a cool shot.
(06:29):
What I would typically do isjust hold that brush in my hair
for three to five seconds at theend to let it lock itself in.
Don't take the brush out ofyour hair after you've just blow
dried it, because you won'thave any volume then.
Okay, here's some pitfalls thatyou want to make sure that
you're avoiding.
Don't go outside before yourhair is cooled.
(06:49):
I know we're all in a hurrythese days, but I tell you,
moisture plus heat is like majorfrizz.
If your hair hasn't completelycooled and it's completely dry
and you go outside and you gointo the humidity and the hot
air, you're just going to havefrizzy hair.
And also, don't overuse oils orthick creams.
(07:12):
They can weigh down your style.
It does go limp in the heat.
A lot of people do tend tooveruse oils in the summertime
because they think it's going tomake their hair shiny.
It's going, you know, sealsdown those frizz.
It does do all that, but youjust don't want to overdo it.
Okay, what can you do in betweenwashes?
If you go to the gym and youdon't want to wash your hair
(07:33):
every day cause I don't, I don'tknow about you use a sweat
wicking headband when you'reworking out, and then you also
want to sleep with your hairloosely pinned up using a
scrunchie or a silk scarf, not arubber band.
Do not, please do not, userubber bands in your hair A
scrunchie or a silk scarf, andjust sleep with it loosely up
(07:54):
off your neck and then you canrefresh your blowout with a
texture mist or a dryconditioner on day two or three.
That is how to go throughgetting a professional blowout,
and those are just some simplelittle tips and tricks.
But now I'm going to answersome questions that some of you
have reached out to me and Ithink it'd be nice to share with
(08:16):
the community.
That some of you have reachedout to me and I think it'd be
nice to share with the communitywhat's the best humidity proof
product for fine hair that getsweighed down easily?
Wowzy, I get this question allthe time.
In fact, myself I asked thatfor myself.
Even you want to look for aweightless humidity shield or an
(08:39):
anti-frizz spray designedspecifically for fine hair.
Here's a new favorite I justfound is the Color Wild Dream
Coat, and again, my link myAmazon shop is down in my show
notes.
Go there and it's great forreally fine hair and it does not
leave buildup.
I used it on a client a coupleof weeks ago and she texted me
like the day after and said myhair still looks fantastic and
(09:04):
she was going on a trip.
Even her friend who met her atthe airport said Whoa, girl,
what?
Look at your hair and it'ssummertime in Virginia.
Another one of my favorites isthe Euphora Smooth and Thermal
Defense.
This really is a wonderfulhumidity shield.
It protects without any heavyoils at all and, again, you want
(09:25):
to make sure that you avoidheavy serums or oils, especially
near the roots.
Focus your application frommid-shaft to ends only with any
products that you use in thesummertime or in the humidity.
Okay, next question is can Istill use a flat iron after blow
drying or will that cause morefrizz?
That is a great question andthe answer is yes, but it
(09:50):
depends on how you do it,because once your hair is
completely dry and smooth fromyour blowout, you can use a flat
iron on low to medium heat tojust polish any flyaways or to
reshape your ends, but skip itIf you're rushing or the room is
humid, like if you're doingthis in the same room, same
(10:10):
bathroom that you just took ashower in, or your spouse or
significant others taking ashower as you're doing your hair
, which a lot of us go throughthat.
Skip this because too much heaton a damp strand, because even
though you've just blow driedyour hair, there's still all
that humidity in the room thatyour hair is sucking up and it
might not feel wet, but it isgoing to be damp.
(10:33):
And then you'll get instantfrizz Lock it in with a humidity
resistant finishing spray afteryou're done, instead of using
the flat iron.
If you're in this situation, how do I maintain my blowout If
I'm traveling somewhere?
Super humid ponytail baseballcap?
(10:54):
That that's.
That's what I personally do,but I'm.
I know that's not the answeryou're looking for.
Okay, pack your travel sizeessentials, like your dry
shampoo to absorb any sweat oroil at the roots.
You need an anti-humidity sprayto refresh and reseal the style
daily.
A silk scrunchie is wonderful,or a scarf to just put your hair
(11:15):
up at night, and a shower capwith a terrycloth lining that
helps to protect your hair in ahumid hotel bathroom and that's
a game changer.
And always, always, let yourhair cool completely before
stepping outside.
I know that is the trick.
That's the trick.
You do not want to go outsidewhen you just blow dried your
(11:36):
hair, it will frizz up.
Another question what do youthink about keratin treatments
for the summer?
These are a game changer.
Keratin treatments are a gamechanger.
They're also called smoothingtreatments and if you've got
curly, coarse or frizz pronehair it's like night and day Now
.
They don't straighten your hair, but they do help cut down on
(11:59):
blow dry time and they fightfrizz big time.
Just make sure you go to astylist who uses formaldehyde
free.
And then you also have tofollow the proper aftercare
because a lot of these havetheir own shampoos and
conditioners to make them lastlonger.
I know when I get a keratintreatment on my hair I usually
do the Brazilian blowout.
It doesn't last as long as itshould because I use a medicated
(12:21):
shampoo and that actuallystrips it out of my hair pretty
fast.
The smoothing treatments that, especially the Brazilian, it's
an out outside of the hairtreatment.
It kind of coats the hair.
There are more permanentsolutions, some of the keratin
and protein-based treatments.
They go to the inside of thehair, the cortex of the hair,
and they actually permanentlychange your hair.
(12:41):
So make sure you know whatyou're getting.
Another question my roots getsweaty, even if my style stays
nice.
Any tricks for that?
Totally, totally normal,because we sweat.
Again, try using that sweatwicking headband during workouts
or while doing your makeup, even because sometimes when
you're doing your makeup you'regetting a little bit hot.
(13:02):
Put in some dry shampoo at theroots before you sweat.
It kind of acts like an oilabsorber.
So don't just put dry shampooon after the fact.
Put it on before the fact.
In fact, you could put dryshampoo on at night, especially
if you're a night sweater.
It'll help absorb the oils onyour head.
And then, after sweating, use acool blow dryer at the roots to
(13:23):
dry and fluff them back up.
Cool blow dryer, not warm.
And here's a bonus trick youmight want to try is this is
with dry hair, flip your headupside down and hit your roots
with dry shampoo and a cool airat the same time.
You might be amazed at what youget All right.
Another question Is there adifference between anti-humidity
(13:44):
sprays and regular hair sprays?
Absolutely, big, big difference.
Yes, regular hairspray holds astyle but doesn't necessarily
block moisture.
Humidity resistant sprays aredesigned to coat the hair strand
and keep out external moisture.
It's almost like putting saranwrap on your hair and it keeps
the moisture out of your hairand you can use both.
(14:06):
And if you're going to do that, apply your humidity blocker
first and then you can mist itwith a light hold hairspray for
extra grip.
Another question Can I refresh ablowout without washing my hair
every other day?
Oh my gosh, absolutely.
Who wants to wash their hairevery day?
In fact, that's the secret.
Absolutely.
Who wants to wash their hairevery day?
(14:27):
In fact, that's the secret.
Day two use dry shampoo at theroots if you need to, and a
round brush and a blow dryer, and it just touches it up,
because you're just touching upwhat you've already put on your
hair.
Day three you can maybe try aloose wave with a curling iron
or a curling wand.
And day four, you can just popyour hair into a low bun or a
(14:47):
half up style and then alwaysfinish with like a texture mist
or a dry conditioner to bringback shine and movement.
Hopefully, these were thingsthat will help you through the
summer and through the humidity.
Thanks for all the questions.
I love that.
And just remember with theright tools and techniques, you
can confidently wear yourblowout all summer long, whether
