what comfort, efficiency andelegance look like behind the
(00:22):
chair.
I think you might want to stickaround for this one.

career.

and a lifelong hair crusader.

right place.

and inspiration to help yougrow behind the chair or just
fall even more in love with theworld of hair, because around
here, it's not just aboutlooking good.
It's about learning, evolvingand having a little fun along
(01:07):
the way.
So grab your coffee, yourshears or your dry shampoo and
let's get into it.
Just recently, I received anemail.
You know we all receive emailsjunk email, whatever but I did
(01:28):
receive an email and it remindedme of something in our salons,
we had something that reallystood out from the competition,
and it was the blow dryers thatare hanging from the ceiling.
Yes, uh, we use the freestylesystem and today I want to tell
you why we chose it.
(01:48):
But I have to say it, reallyI'm going to go over all these
pros and cons of it but reallyit made us stand apart from all
the other salons.
The best part was when peoplecame in all the other salons.
(02:09):
The best part was when peoplecame in.
Wow, it was the wow factor andit made our salon look really
clean.
It was, it was a game changerwhen we went to that.
Now they're not cheap, I have totell you.
They are not cheap.
However, once you make theinvestment, they pay for
themselves.
So let's just get into this.
Let's just be real.
Okay, blow drying is one of themost physically demanding parts
(02:33):
of our job.
Day after day, it takes a tollon our wrists, our shoulders,
even our attitude.
Right, because the repetitivestrain injuries like carpal
tunnel aren't just annoying, they're career threatening.
(02:54):
Now, why do stylists strugglewith all of this?
Well, one is that heavy dryerscan cause a lot of fatigue on
your wrist, your hands, yourshoulders.
And then what about the tangledcords all over the place?
It's a mess and you know you'retripping on the cord or you're
making the cord wrap around yourclient's leg or over the chair
or whatever.
And then you also have the losttime by setting your blow dryer
(03:15):
down, picking it back up,setting it down, picking it up.
You also have that dreadedfeeling of just one more blowout
to go.
We've all been there, right?
So there's a lot of fancy blowdryers on the market, beautiful
blow dryers, expensive blowdryers but even the lightweight
ones don't solve the movementstrain.
(03:37):
You know what I'm talking aboutthat movement on your wrists
and when you're going aroundwith the round brush and the
blow dryer and cordless dryers.
They do have cordless dryers, but they still don't fix the
problem of where to put it, howto get it quickly, how to manage
the cords effectively.
These are all just commonproblems, right?
(04:00):
These are all just commonproblems, right?
When I talk to other salonowners about this because you
know people ask my opinion onthings all the time Most of all
they say the expense.
It is expensive.
Is it really worth theinvestment?
My answer would be yes.
You have to answer that withinyour own four walls.
Another thing that I hear isit's too complicated to install.
(04:23):
Yeah, if you were installing ityourself.
But I had a wonderfulelectrician and I gave him the
challenge of installing thesethings in our drop ceiling.
He did a magnificent job andhe'd never seen anything like it
before.
But he did a fabulous, fabulousjob and they send all the
directions, so any electriciancould probably figure it out.
(04:47):
And then another question is waswhat if I don't like the blow
dryer that this system comeswith?
Well, they have a wide varietyof choices, but they also have
it so you can wire your blowdryer onto it.
I believe we never went thatroute.
You can wire your blow dryeronto it.
I believe we never went thatroute.
We just selected a blow dryer.
We thought, uh, everybody wouldlike and that the controls on
(05:09):
it were nice and easy.
I think we went with the Elshamand it was fabulous for us.
So so what is this system?
Okay, if you've never seen thissystem, you could just Google
it online, or we use the freestylist system so you can go on
their website.
I'll leave a link.
I'm not getting paid for thisor anything.
(05:30):
I just had this email comeacross and I was like you know
what people have asked me aboutthis before.
What is the free stylist system?
Well, it's not just a dryer.
Yes, it is a blow dryer hangingfrom the sky, but it's not just
a dryer.
Yes, it is a blow dryer hangingfrom the sky, but it's not just
a dryer it's suspended and it'sgot counterbalance support
system that transforms how youwork.
(05:51):
And I have to tell you, when wefirst got these in, it was very
different to use and at firstwe were all like, are we going
to like this?
And I said, well, it's too latenow because we've already paid
for it.
But it is a little bitdifferent and what happens is
the blow dryer is suspended fromthe air and you pull it down
and it automatically comes onand then when you put it back in
(06:14):
the air, it turns off and it'sout of your way and it's just
hanging above your head and youjust blow dry like that.
Let me just talk about some ofthe features and the benefits of
it and I don't know, maybe it'ssomething you might want to
check out First.
The dryer feels feather light, like you don't.
You're like you're not evenholding anything.
There's no strain, there's nosoreness on your wrist and it
(06:37):
really does reduce the risk ofcarpal tunnel and fatigue, which
is huge in our business, because most people that I hear
about that's what their concernis is their risks are giving out
.
We're in this for the long termand we want to be in this for
the long term, so the last thingyou want is for your body to
give up on you.
(06:57):
One of my favorite features isthat there's no cords.
You're not tripping on cords, there's no tangles, there's no
mesh, you're not like having tounwind everything, and it just
keeps the whole salon and yourstation just looking very sleek
and very professional.
I absolutely love that feature.
And, like I said before, theautomatic activation reach up,
(07:21):
pull it down, it turns onautomatically.
There's no buttons, no fumbling, just pure ease of just pulling
it down and it comes on.
It also saves you time, especially if you're
back-to-back blowouts, andclients notice this.
They notice the difference inthe speed, they notice the
difference in the polished look.
(07:42):
It's a win-win.
And then, of course, the wowfactor Holy cow, it was a game
changer, I kid you not, when youwalked into our salons and you
saw that it was just like dang, this is like a big city salon
and we weren't in a big city.
It just creates a modern,high-tech look like hey, this
(08:05):
place means business, clientslove it and they talk about it
and they, they tell theirfriends about it and guess what?
Referrals?
Hello, just from having hangingblow dryers.
Love, love, love it.
So they do have two differentsystem options.
They have one that's fullyremote controlled.
You can adjust the height, theweight, the feel, all with a
(08:29):
wireless remote.
We didn't have that one, we hadthe manual version and that's
just you adjust the restingheight with a screw and then the
weight calibration's alreadypreset.
And so basically we had all ofour blow dryers set at the same
height and if we had, like ashorter stylus, we could go up
into the mechanism and changewhere the height is.
(08:52):
But basically you want it highenough so you're not bumping
your head on it, but low enoughso when you reach up, just reach
up and grab it from a dropceiling.
That's what we had.
Actually, one of our salonsdidn't even have a ceiling, it
was one of those exposedceilings, but you can adapt this
system anyway to for your salonsetup.
(09:12):
So they have well, they havefive different standard
installation methods which youcould see on their website.
I'm not going to go through allof those, but you can also
customize the options for aunique look.
So what we did in one of oursalons, and we had the same
system in two of our salons oneof our salons had a drop ceiling
(09:32):
and so we had to hook it up andthen wire it within the drop
ceiling.
And then another salon it hadone of those open ceilings that
were painted black with all theyou know you could see the duct
work.
It's very industrial lookingand our electrician had to come
up with some kind of plan tohook it up and then they painted
everything black.
So it all looked like it allwent together and you couldn't
(09:55):
see any of the cords up in theceiling.
It was fine.
You would just have to talk toyour electrician or to your
contractor whoever's installingit, and also, if you go to the
company itself, they'll give yourecommendations on how to
install it.
It's all laid out there blackand white, but you do probably
want to get an electrician to dothis for you.
And then people always ask aboutthe dryer compatibility.
(10:19):
You can use your favorite dryer.
What you do is you send it intothe company and they will hook
it up to their system andmechanics on that end they make
it so it comes on and off.
I don't know what they do.
It's for a fee that you can dothat.
Most people just pick fromtheir list of supported
professional brands, and I thinkthat when we used it, I think
(10:40):
they had like I don't know, sixor seven different brands you
could choose from, and differentcolors too, and if yours, the
one that you want is not listed, you can always submit your own
dryer and they'll adapt it tothe system.
Like I said, when we firstswitched over, it was a big and
even myself it took a little bitof getting used to, but less
(11:04):
than an hour, I mean one blowdry.
You know the first blow drythat you're doing with it.
Yeah, it's a little bit likewhoa.
I don't really know what I'mdoing, but to tell you the truth
now, it's harder to do a blowdry with it plugged in than it
is from pulling down the ceiling.
I forget how easy it was.
So some of my stylists whatthey'd say after we switched is
(11:27):
they didn't realize how muchstrain they were under until
they weren't under strainanymore, which is kind of cool,
I mean and it is true, Iremember that too my shoulders
didn't hurt as bad, my wristdidn't hurt, their posture is
better, their blowouts werefaster and, like I said, the
clients were just wowed by thefact that we had pull-down blow
dryers.
(11:47):
I just thought they were in thesalon.
Really, my team loved it andhonestly I think it extended
their careers and my career too.
I mean, because you're just notgetting as fatigued.
And, as a salon owner, some ofthe bonuses of having this less
stylist turnover because guesswhat they really like to work in
(12:08):
a salon that looks like itmeans business.
Yeah, cause if you're going toinvest all that money to put
those systems in place, thenthey know that you're in it for
the long haul too.
And also less stylist turnover, because we get more referrals
from people looking at our salon, thinking that it looks very
professional and they want to bethere.
You also had fewer equipmentrepairs.
(12:30):
Every once in a while a blowdryer would stop working, just
like equipment does, because youknow you're using it eight 10
hours a day, seven days a week.
So what you would do is youwould just disconnect it from
the cord and you would send itin and I think they had
different maintenance packagesor programs, but I think it was
like under a hundred dollars andthey'll repair it or send you a
(12:52):
new blow dryer and you justconnect it back up.
That's all it was.
And another bonus you just lookmore professional looking and
it attracts attention and youcan take pictures and put it on
your Instagram pages, yoursocial media.
And when people see thosehanging blow dryers, I don't
know.
There's just something about itthat just looks high end.
How much money do they cost?
(13:14):
You know, I don't.
I don't know the prices now,but I think when we did it it
was, I want to say it was like$1,200 a station.
But okay, let me clarify this.
We went with.
It was like a big box that hadlights in it, because lighting
was a big issue for us because,uh, we didn't have very much
(13:38):
natural light in our salon.
So instead of putting more Idon't know those tube lights and
stuff, we just opted for theunit that comes with the lights
overhead and then the blowdryers in the middle of it.
So we had to actually put thewhole unit up into the ceiling
with the lights coming down.
But they do have units.
That is just the blow dryerhanging up on a mechanism and it
(14:02):
doesn't come with lights.
So those would be a lot cheaperthan the lighting units.
So do your research.
I don't know, but you know, youthink about it.
One of our salons had eightstations.
The other salon had 12.
So that's 20 times 1200.
Yeah, yeah, that's a lot ofmoney.
But let me just say, if you'reserious about creating a
(14:23):
sustainable career in thisindustry and delivering a
premium guest experience at thesame time, I think this
Freestyle Assistant might justbe your next best investment.
And no, I don't get anycommission or anything for
saying that.
I just really, truly enjoyedthat whole feature in our salon.
(14:45):
It just really made us standapart.
It made us look different.
Even when stylists came in tointerview they would be wowed.
So not only the stylist, butthe clients, other salon owners,
I tell you it just really, really elevates your whole salon
.
So I will leave the website inmy show notes.
(15:07):
So if you want to explore it alittle bit and if you know
Freestylist is listening to this, hey, contact me.
We can set something uptogether.
Anyway, I hope this helps you.
I don't even know if you'rethinking about the Freestyle
System, but if you were, hopefully it answered some
(15:31):
questions and always rememberwhen you know better, you do
better.
