undefined
Our friends and neighbors, how are you today?
It is such a gorgeous day.
I can't wait to get started withthis episode of All in Long Beach.
How you doing?
Stuart Takahara with you.
I hope you guys had an amazing weekend.
I know that I did.
It was a, uh, it was a great You know, there's just something different when the
(00:36):
sun is shining and the weather is warmThat just brings out the best in people.
Everyone's walking around.
Everyone's smiling.
Everyone's just happy golucky It is a a great thing.
I don't know about you, but I actuallywas able to make it out this weekend
on a Sunday I said, all right, I got toget out of here You know stayed in bed
(00:57):
and kind of been a little lazy bum butI was like I got to get out and enjoy I
went out and, um, hopped on my scooter.
I got one of those littleelectric scooters around.
By the way, I've been usingthese things way before Lyman,
Bird, and all this other stuff.
It's a great way to get around the cityand to hop around and see what's going on.
But I had to make my way from thedowntown Long Beach area all the way to
Alamitos Bay, which is pretty much fromone side of Long Beach to the other.
(01:18):
I hop on that bike trail, andthis is the first time I've really
been able to To look around and Isaw this, you know, right, right
there over by shoreline marina.
There's that new gaucho grill That'sjust right there right on the and I was
like this place is packed I mean, thisis what beach living should be about
and as I was rolling through I was ona time frame So I couldn't stop by but
(01:39):
I was like I need to stop at this placeand find out what What is going on here?
And I don't know, have youguys been to this Gaucho Beach?
They call it the Gaucho Beach Food Court.
And it's right there onthe shoreline, right on the
backside of the Villa Riviera.
There's a big parking lot and it's great.
I'm looking at their website right now.
And they're open 7 days a week.
They've got live music on the weekends.
(02:00):
Brunch everyday, all day.
Some great happy hour specials.
We're talking about like 5 beers.
On their happy hours, uh, Mondaythrough Friday, which is just fantastic.
I, I gotta go back to this and I'm,I'm kind of wondering if you guys have.
Have been there.
If you've seen it, if you've been around, but as I was going past gaucho, it was
like, I got to put that on my list.
(02:21):
I got to make sure I get back there.
Just rolling through the bike path, going up to Belmont pier, going up to
those areas, there's so much happening.
It is absolutely amazing about allthe stuff, all the, the people that
were out there, there was a carshow, the, all the volleyball nets
where people were out being active.
I mean, isn't that why?
(02:43):
We here, we live here in Long Beach.
Isn't that why we get out therebecause of this active, all
this stuff that's happening?
It is, it is just absolutely amazing.
So I was going through BelmontPier, which was also packed.
And maybe later on, we'll, I'll, I'llget into why the heck don't we have
that, that pure back the, the docs forthe aqualink and stuff like that's a
whole nother conversation for anotherday, but as it was going through that
(03:07):
and just kind of pushing through atwhere they're building the pool and
we're doing all that, there is a lothappening on the long beach waterfront.
It is just absolutely.
Absolutely amazing.
And then as I was kind of goingthrough there, um, off the bike path,
I cut around through Horny Corner.
And that place was justabsolutely packed as well.
There's traffic, there's people out andabout, just kind of, they're being active,
(03:29):
and they're just enjoying the city.
That, it just, it justbrought a smile to my face.
And then I got to my work.
And that just, you know, was a wholeother different, different thing.
There's one thing about it, going outand enjoying the warm weather, and then
there's another thing about working outin, in the warm weather and, and all that.
But anyways.
That was just, it was just sohappy and so exciting to see
(03:50):
everyone out doing all this.
And in addition, this lastweekend, hit up another place.
Don't know if you've been there yet.
This place, um, opened updowntown a little while ago.
And I'm like, is this place new?
Or have they been around?
Cause they had everything dialed in.
It was It was to a T.
Perfect.
(04:10):
I think I went there onThursday earlier this week.
And Thursday around 11 o'clock.
And we had to wait.
There was a line.
For a restaurant.
Thursday morning at around 11 o'clock.
And this place is called Madre's Brunch.
And it's over on 1st Street.
I want to say 1st and something.
I forget.
But it's downtown.
It's where the old Long Beach tacocompany used to be and man, do these
(04:35):
guys do a great job for being new?
They had again, everything dialed in.
The food was amazing.
The vibe was energetic.
The there's just the environmentin there was, was great.
I kind of sat right by the kitchen, right?
They put us in a little two topwhere you can kind of look into
the kitchen and everything.
And I saw these kitchen workers, they were like dialed in.
We had our food in and out.
(04:56):
It was Absolutely fantastic.
And I was like, these guys areway too organized to have just
this one off kind of a place.
And, and I was like, no, they, Ilooked up, I looked it up and they
have some in Whittier and in Bellflowerand in Rancho Cucamonga, Placentia
and Riverside and now Long Beach.
But man, these guys are fantastic.
(05:17):
If you haven't made it out toMadre's brunch, I would definitely,
definitely check it out.
Cause that was another, uh, great spot.
You know what else I went to this weekend?
You know what else I hit up?
There's a new place called Midnight Oil.
And that Midnight Oil is on the cornerof Broadway and Long Beach Boulevard.
And they are just getting started.
I think this was their firstfull week of doing food service.
(05:39):
So if you get a chance to go outthere, uh, that would be a, um,
another option that you coulddefinitely go out and check out.
That's in the same building, uh,where Rosemallow's used to be.
So Rosemallow's kind of wentthrough a transformation.
And I think Midnight Oilis still trying to do this.
I don't know if this was theirsoft opening, or their hard
opening, or their open, theirclosed, I don't know what it is.
(06:00):
I think they're still trying to geta little bit dialed in, so when you
go over there, bring your patients, cause they're still in an open area
that they haven't developed the otherbars yet, they're still working out
some of the other things, but ifyou want to get on the ground floor,
you want to try something new, now.
Before they kinda do a bigopening, I would, uh, go over
there and check that out too.
It's called Midnight Oil, andit's on the corner of Long
Beach Boulevard and Broadway.
(06:22):
And that place too, um,they're just gettin dialed in.
They're just gettin dine youknow, they're kinda gettin set
up and fixed up and everything.
So, , Those are great places that Iwould definitely recommend if you're
just looking to go and enjoy thesunshine You're trying to find a
spot to say where do I want to go?
Where do I want to be those two places?
Absolutely the best and there's onething that I'm curious about what you
(06:45):
guys do here when we were at Madresthere's a there's all different types
of people when it comes to splittingbills and tipping and stuff like that.
And when we're in our, friendgroup and, and whatever, we
just know we're out so much.
We just kind of take the bill and we splitit three ways and sometimes it's fine.
You win some, you losesome, but it all evens out.
(07:06):
I won big during dry Januarybecause they weren't drinking.
I was, I don't do that dry January crap.
So we were still splittingthe bill three ways.
So I was getting the booze and.
And, um, but you know, it, it, it equalsout, it, it all evens out at some point,
and we're just like, ah, whatever, just split the bill, and it's fine.
But it's amazing how some people getvery, very detailed on it, and they get
(07:26):
very, very itemized, and they look very, very, um, At every single line item and
then they look at the tax, they lookat the tipping and I've, you know, I
come from a restaurant background, youknow, I used to be server and I still
own a bar and restaurant right now.
So I've always learned when I wasyounger is you just double the tax.
We know our tax rate is 10 percent or 10.
(07:48):
25 percent right now.
So you just look at the tax becausethat tax is on the subtotal.
So if you have 100 bill, your tax is 1025.
You double it, you know, you're at 20 bucks or 20.
50.
That's 20 percent and some change, you know, and great service.
Add a few bucks.
Don't like, you know, had horrible service.
You just subtract a few bucks, butthat's kind of your starting point.
20%.
(08:09):
You just double your tax andyou're and you're good to go.
But there's some people thatwill look at the total and
then take 20 percent of that.
And then you're taxing on the, then you're tipping on the tax.
And that was the discussionI got into this weekend too.
It's like, do you tip on the tax ordo you tip on just the bill itself?
Or what, what formula do you useto figure out how much you're
(08:32):
going to be leaving in tips?
Because that's, that's alwayssomething that I was kind of wondering.
It seems like everybody is different.
And when you go out with likeminded people, it makes splitting
checks really, really easy.
But when you go out with newpeople or people that have
different philosophies it can get.
And you can get a little daunting.
Sometimes, and it can make what wouldotherwise be an amazing delicious meal,
(08:55):
maybe a little more uncomfortable asyou're trying to walk out the door.
So I'm just, just kind of curious asto, as to what you did,, what you do
when you're dining with a, with your,,With your friends, family, and different
people, just kind of wanting to hearyour thoughts on how you do all that.
And, and how do you spend your weekend?
Leave your comments in the notes below.
What else do you guys like to dowhen we just have this beautiful
(09:17):

a little bit of a weekend update.
