Tis’ the season for introspection, self reflection, and projections for what the New Year will hold. Today I share some background into my process of reflecting and projecting on the things I need to get done, along with some ideas on how I plan on expanding and refining that process.

If you have a process you use to help yourself get better I would love to hear it. Please, connect with me on Bluesky, or hit me up on Twitter, and let me know what works best for you!

To follow along, you can find me at ryanhefner.com, follow me on Bluesky @ryanhefner.com and keep up with the show on allplay.fm and @allplay.fm.

Ryan (00:00):
Hey. How's it going? I'm Ryan Hefner, and this is the All
Play podcast. So, obviously,it's approaching the end of the
year, and it's a time for alittle introspection, a little
time for reflection, a littletime for, you know, all that
good stuff, or bad stuffdepending on, you know, how

(00:22):
things are going. But,regardless of that, I have been
trying to do a bit of atechnique that, I'm hoping to
continue into the next year andactually hoping to kind of
evolve.
So let's say over the lastcouple years, and actually for
the longest time, I've beenjotting down all my to dos and

(00:47):
ideas and everything in betweenwithin, Field Notes. So, like,
the Field Notes Notebooks. I'vetried to use a bunch of
different to do it to do appsand whatnot, but, I just never
really found a good consistent, system with any of the the

(01:08):
digital stuff. You know, I wasusing things for a while, tried
out a bunch of different stuff.I tried using Notion and then,
logging stuff with an Obsidian.
And, you know, even just usingGitHub issues or GitHub
projects, you know, for, like, the the coding side of things.

(01:28):
But the one tried and true thingthat I always have with me and
that, I guess I've just reallyintroduced as like a as a
practice is is jottingeverything down within field
notes. And so at the end of theweek, I kinda do or at least I I
try to do on a pretty consistentbasis, a little thing that I

(01:49):
call reflect and project. SoSundays, you know, I'll sit
down. I'll start flippingthrough, shit seeing if there's
anything that I need to, thatmaybe I missed and didn't check
off and kinda going backthrough, back through time a
little bit.
And, you know, I'm not workingin just one field field notes
book. I actually have, probably, like, 2 or 3 that are outside of

(02:13):
my, like, main one that I alsokinda start flipping back
through. And, you know, thethese are things that I've
accumulated over the last coupleyears or not years, but, over
the last couple months of just, you know, constantly kind of
jotting ideas down or or to dos. And, so I I basically kinda go

(02:34):
and I reflect on those on what Idid get done or maybe, you know,
what I didn't get done. And thenthat kind of, reflection then
almost kinda like kindles alittle bit of inspiration of,
like, what I wanna do in thecoming weeks.

(02:56):
So that's where I end up doing, more of the projections. So I
start just like anything thatcomes to the top of my head, I
just jot it down, you know, whether it's something I wanna
do on a project, maybe a newproject idea, you know, random
stuff. Like, I I'm I do I needto get a new accountant because

(03:19):
I had one in New York. Neverreally had, like, a proper
relationship with my accountant. Not to say that I'm, like,
trying to, you know I just wantsomeone who can who I can, like,
talk with and talk throughdecisions.
Like, I currently have a NewYork LLC, but I wanna shut that

(03:41):
one down and start up a new one.I know that with LLCs, you know,
you can either do it in thestate that you reside in or, I
guess you can actually I guess, like, the most, like, tax
advantage there. Like, the mosttax advantage way of, doing an
LLC is in with in Wyoming, similar to the whole, Delaware C

(04:06):
Corp thing. But, you know, I'mnot really sure what the
requirements are around that. DoI need to set up, like, a weird
forwarding address?
Is there any sort ofrepercussions when it comes to,
you know, filing? Do I need tofile taxes for both Wyoming and
Georgia since I'll actually beresiding in Georgia? And I'm a

(04:26):
sole proprietor at this pointfor the LLC with no other
members. So just, you know, wanna try to figure out what all
that is and, like, to have anaccount or someone who can maybe
guide me in the right directionand, help me do the right
decisions a little bit more, like, premeditated before all of

(04:47):
my weird reactive stuff that Iend up trying to do at the end
of every year. You know, throwing money into different
things, hoping that it'll with, you know, offset a little bit
better to, like, tax stuff.
But, so yeah. So that's the, youknow, that's, again, just

(05:07):
something that ends up in thisthing. And, over the last couple
weeks, I've been thinking aboutthe whole reflect and project
stuff, and I realized thatactually there was something
missing. And it's something thatI've been trying to do a little
bit more, but I haven't reallymade a conscious effort. And
that is, I feel like I need toadd a third part to it.

(05:29):
And so I wanna reflect, I wannaproject, but I also need to
connect. And that means, youknow, reaching out to friends,
seeing how they're doing, justbasic catching up and maybe
sharing what I'm doing and, andall that good stuff, reaching
out to, people who are doingsimilar things as I am. And, you
know, I'd I'd say I kindastarted doing some of that stuff

(05:51):
with the jam sessions podcastthat I'm doing, and I I wanna do
more of that. And so, I knowBrian Castle who, was last on,
he was a second jam sessioner. He's already expressed some
interest about hopping on themics again and, jamming on some
of the stuff that I'm doing withstarter packs and around

(06:12):
potential guessing monetizationor pricing stuff, or I don't
know.
I'm not sure where, where hishead's at, but, I wanna do more
of that. I wanna connect withpeople, you know, even if it
doesn't mean that it's going ona podcast, just could be a
conversation in a Telegram groupor on Discord or a text message
or a phone call or, you know, oror if it does justify, you know,

(06:40):
opening up a stream or orrecording it and sharing it with
everyone, that's cool too. But Ireally wanna introduce that
connect piece. So I wanna havereflect, project, and connect,
and then I started thinkingabout it. The connection piece
is awesome.
I really wanna do that more. Butthen the connection piece

(07:03):
introduces this whole otherspectrum to it. And, you know,
of course, I was trying tofigure out a word that could
kinda flow with this wholereflect, project, connect. And,
you know, I'm thinking about thethe connection. I'm thinking
about getting feedback orsuggestions or, you know, trying

(07:23):
to to to get to somethingbetter, and I realized that I
think there's a force piecepiece to this.
And that is essentially reflect, project, connect, and correct.
And the correct thing there iskind of interesting because the
way that I've been doing itbefore is, you know, I kinda I

(07:46):
go through, I check all thestuff that I did that either,
provides maybe some inspirationor even reminds me of other
stuff that I didn't even jotdown that I end up jotting down.
The connect piece, I wannabasically be really conscious
about trying to reach out tolike, I'm not really sure how

(08:06):
many people, but a good amountof people that I can just like
talk through, stuff throughoutthe course of a week. And then
the correct piece is kindainteresting because basically
based off that reflection, I'vemade a projection. And, again,
I'm not time boxing this stuff.
So the that projection, it's notstuff that needs to get done

(08:27):
necessarily the next day or thenext week. It's it could be
something that eventually getsdone within the next month or
even off to the next year. Butthe connection piece is where
that stuff can then kinda get alittle bit more rather refined.
So if there's something thatmaybe I don't really have a
super clear vision on, maybethat that connection piece will

(08:52):
help smooth out some of therough edges that I haven't
really quite captured or graspedwithin these ideas. And then
there's, I guess, there's alsothe other side of that where it
might not necessarily berefining stuff.
It might actually just totallydetour me off into some other
direction. And that's somethingI'm gonna be mind trying to be

(09:13):
mindful of. I mean, I alreadyhave bad enough shiny object
syndrome that, you know, introducing obviously too much
feedback or something or earlyon in a project or even, you
know, unsolicited feedback thatactually just totally diverts
you to some other thing. Ialready know that I already do

(09:35):
that stuff myself, so I'm gonnabe trying to manage that as best
I can. But at the same time, having those conversations, just
having the, the space for thatstuff to happen, me trying to
self regulate and make sure thatI don't go too far off the
tracks or get diverted downsomething where I shouldn't lose

(09:58):
focus on the thing that I'm, youknow, trying to achieve is gonna
be, well, you know, my ownmental, physical hurdle, but or
challenge, I should say.
But yeah. So I don't know. Ijust wanted to get this out.
I've been thinking about the endof the year. I'm thinking about
how I can kinda go into 2025with a, you know, sharper,

(10:23):
clearer mind, really try tocommit to what I wanna get done,
and evolve that vision as wellthroughout the way and try to
refine it.
So I give you reflect, project, connect, and correct. It's a
system I'm gonna try to use fromtoday moving forward as I'm I'm

(10:48):
working on stuff. I'm curiouswhat you all do to try to manage
this stuff and just sort of wrapyour head around it and and try
to stick to stuff or not. Youknow? I mean, it's totally valid
to have think you want somethingone day, and then you realize
that maybe it's just not quitethe right fit either once you
find more information on it orjust once you go down that path

(11:09):
and you realize that maybe maybesomething else is, is the better
way to go.
But I'd really love someinsights on what you all are
doing. And if you find thisconcept, interesting. So like I
said, I'm Ryan Hefner. This isthe All Play Podcast. You can

(11:30):
find, previous episodes@allplay.fm.
I'm gonna be posting moreupdates on when new episodes
come out on Bluesky @allplay.fm.That's the handle. And then,
obviously, my personal, Blue Skyaccount is at allplay.ry all
@ryanhefner.com. And you canobviously see some more of my

(11:53):
stuff going on atryanhefner.com. I am gonna I
have a few blog posts in theworks.
I'd actually try to do a year inthe review, which I feel like
I've attempted that to do acouple of attempted to do that a
couple of times, but I've neverreally committed to it. But for
whatever reason, this year feelslike it's the year. These
podcasts are way easier for meto do then, then blog posts,

(12:15):
even though they kinda end upturning into 1 if you have to
actually check out the shownotes. But yeah. So I'm gonna
leave it there.
I'm over I'm rambling on. Checkit out. Also, if you listen to
this, you know, drop a ratingor, like, review or something on
the podcast. I don't know if, Iguess I I I need to actually go

(12:37):
out and, like, look at thesedifferent things to see if
people are doing that. But,yeah, I don't know.
It just helped me out just tomake sure I'm just not kinda
talking into the void here. But,yeah, I'm gonna leave it there.
So reflect, project, connect, and correct. And I hope y'all
are having a great year andlooking forward to 2025 and

(12:59):
tackling whatever you wanna do.So have a great one.
Later.
