all things travel.
ryan_2_12-02-2024_210607 (00:42):
Julie,
have you planned a Costa Rica
trip before for clients?
j_1_12-02-2024_210607 (00:47):
I've
researched it a couple times.
I have not had anyone go yet,
ryan_2_12-02-2024_210607 (00:51):
I have
for a family of four and it was
over a Christmas break.
So it was right after Christmasand over new year's and they did
it all.
They were all over the placewith Costa Rica had, drivers
over new years, they were inthis condo resort where they had
a golf cart.
they were at all inclusiveareas.
They were in, more.
(01:13):
Home type settings.
They just really wanted to do itand man, they had a ball in
Costa Rica.
j_1_12-02-2024_210607 (01:19):
And
that's partly why I'm so excited
to share this itinerary and whywe wanted to feature Costa Rica
as a destination because a lotof people think oh, I couldn't
go all the way over there withkids, but we're going to tell
you all the awesome
ryan_2_12-02-2024_210607 (01:32):
Oh,
you absolutely can.
it's very easy to go with kidsand have all different types of
experiences.
j_1_12-02-2024_210607 (01:40):
there's
so much to do.
ryan_2_12-02-2024_210607 (01:42):
before
we talk about Costa Rica with
families.
If you have not listened to lastweek's episode, we talk about
flight prices and why they're sohigh right now and money saving
tips for you the next time youbook a flight.
j_1_12-02-2024_210607 (01:56):
So first
let's talk about why you go to
Costa Rica and a little bitabout the logistics of getting
there and what you need to knowbefore you go.
The whys are kind of obvious.
There's rainforests, there'sbeaches, there's rivers, there's
a lot of wildlife that you can'tsee other places.
over 30 national parks, andwithin those parks, there's 5
(02:18):
percent of the world'sbiodiversity.
Just in that one spot, there'scloud forests, coral reefs, dry
forests, and rainforests.
Or take a hike to the TenorioVolcano National Park and see
stunning waterfalls.
sights you really can't see inother destinations of the world.
(02:38):
Costa Rica has more than 60volcanoes, including five that
are active.
The Arenal volcano is one ofCosta Rica's most popular
attractions, especially if youwant to hike or soak in the
soothing geothermal hot springsIn that area there are spas and
resorts that take advantage ofthose naturally warm waters, and
(03:00):
that just sounds amazing.
You can also do some adventuretravel, so things like river
rafting, fishing, ATV driving, scuba diving, tubing, ziplining,
and more and more and more.
If you're an animal lover, CostaRica is an amazing destination.
There's so much wildlife todiscover.
(03:21):
Animals like macaws, seaturtles, adorable sloths.
This country is a haven for morethan 500, 000 species.
If you go at the right time, youcan see humpback whales as they
migrate, and we'll talk aboutthat a little more later.
And it's also known as thehummingbird capital of the
world, with 50 different speciesof hummingbirds living here.
(03:41):
When we talk about the beachesof Costa Rica, they have both
Pacific and Caribbean beaches, with more than 800 miles of
beautiful shoreline.
So if you want to relax, it's anamazing destination.
You can go to the beach resort, you can go to the hot springs,
so much to choose from.
ryan_2_12-02-2024_210607 (04:02):
While
you're schlepping through the
rain forest, Julie, I'm going tobe on the beach.
j_1_12-02-2024_210607 (04:07):
It's
schlepping.
I love
ryan_2_12-02-2024_210607 (04:09):
when I
was researching Costa Rica, one
of the things that I loved waslearning about the capital of
San Jose and how it's becoming ahotspot for foodies.
innovative chefs have beenopening new restaurants and bars
there, and there's also avibrant craft beer scene in
Costa Rica.
within the food spectrum, youhave anything from traditional
(04:30):
cuisine shaped by Spanish andCaribbean and indigenous
influences, as well as other.
You know access to local freshingredients.
It's a hot spot for adventurousfoodies with things like ceviche
like seafood cocktails andspecialty sandwiches made with
meats cheeses and veggies Theyhave lots of fruits and they
(04:53):
also have a dish where they boilfruits in Serve them with
mayonnaise.
Julie,
j_1_12-02-2024_210607 (05:01):
Which I
guess is delicious if you're
there.
ryan_2_12-02-2024_210607 (05:03):
I'm
going to try it.
If I'm there.
So when you're not drinkingcoffee in Costa Rica, you should
opt for Costa Rica's other drinkof choice.
Guaro and that's a clear sweetliqueur It's made from sugar
cane juice and it's a very highalcohol content.
It's not recommended to drink inshots unless you've had it
(05:24):
before.
However, many people drink itchilled and served with sugar
and lime or in a cocktail.
j_1_12-02-2024_210607 (05:32):
So while
I am schlepping in the
rainforest, that's where you'llbe.
ryan_2_12-02-2024_210607 (05:35):
Yes,
so I'm gonna have my wonderful
Costa Rican coffee in themorning with my breakfast,
staring at the volcanoes, watching you, climb through the
forest, and then I'm gonna drinkthis magical drink, guaro, and
just have a heck of a time.
j_1_12-02-2024_210607 (05:52):
So good.
ryan_2_12-02-2024_210607 (05:53):
So,
let's talk about some of the
logistics when it comes totravel.
When's the best time to go toCosta Rica?
that's generally betweenDecember and April.
the Caribbean side of thecountry is particularly sunny in
October.
Many airlines offer nonstopflights to the cities of Liberia
and San Jose.
Costa Rica is about a three hourflight from Miami, a six hour
(06:16):
flight from Los Angeles, and afive hour flight from New York
City.
So very accessible.
If you're traveling from theUnited States, you probably
won't have to worry about severejet lag.
Because the country operates onmountain standard time from mid
March to October and thencentral standard time November
to mid March.
(06:38):
The currency is the Costa RicanCologne, although U.
S.
dollars and credit cards arewidely accepted.
this is a country that is usedto tourists and dealing with all
sorts of financial transactions.
Where should you stay when yougo to Costa Rica?
You should stay in the areaaround the Arenal volcano
because it's famous for luxuryspas and natural hot springs.
(07:02):
There's also like Julie said, beach resorts growing in
popularity with destinationslike Papagano Peninsula,
offering sandy shores, wildlifeexperiences, all inclusive five
star accommodations.
Costa Rica sounds like a place Iwant to go.
And You have an amazing tripthat you're going to highlight
for us, Julie, but first I wantto talk about where in the world
(07:24):
is all things travel this weekas I looked at new locations for
us.
Prescott Knowsley came up on thelist and Prescott is a town and
civil parish within theMetropolitan Borough of
Knowsley, and it's about 8 milesto the east of the Liverpool
(07:46):
City Center.
So hello to England.
And Julie, we have more and morelisteners from England.
j_1_12-02-2024_210607 (07:53):
That's so
cool.
ryan_2_12-02-2024_210607 (07:54):
So I
want to meet our listener.
We just talked about, drinks.
I want to meet them at.
Prescott's most popular pub, theLord Strange.
the Lord Strange is a moderntwist on a classic pub, serving
Sunday lunch, pie night everyWednesday, pub classics,
(08:14):
fantastic cocktails, Germandraft beer, and local craft.
I want to sit in a pub, have astory, have a pint with our
listener, and thank them forbeing featured on all things
travel today.
j_1_12-02-2024_210607 (08:29):
Okay, we
are going to walk you through a
suggested itinerary fortraveling to Costa Rica.
I chose this itineraryspecifically because it is
family friendly when we gothrough this, you'll see that
this actually offers options forkids as young as two, which is
so cool.
I don't really want to take mytwo year old to Costa Rica, but
(08:49):
maybe somebody does.
a lot of times there's a minimumof like age five or age eight.
And if you are a family that hasthree or four kids, it's kind of
hard to find the right time togo.
so I really love this option.
we're going to talk a little bitabout the accommodations and
then take you through a day byday.
And I bet by the end of thisyou're going to be wanting to go
(09:10):
to Costa Rica because I do.
this itinerary starts At theArenal Volcano area.
So you're going to be staying atthe Kuro Sweets and Spa, which
is located right at the foot ofthe volcano.
It has restaurants on site, allthe amenities you would need
right there.
The town of La Fortuna is notfar, so you can also easily get
into town to sample some localfare.
(09:32):
There's a lot of activitiesnearby, such as ziplining,
hiking, going to differentbutterfly gardens, all sorts of
great stuff.
They have an awesome pool onsite, as well as a private
thermal springs area, and Ithink that's where you'll find
me this is an 8 day itinerary.
So day 1 is where you're reallyarriving.
And just listen to this.
(09:53):
Even though this is just yourarrival, this is what I love
about this itinerary being sospecialized to families.
you meet your private driver.
They're going to take you on thetransfer over to Aaronall.
And your kids receivedpersonalized welcome packs the
family's going to get aKensington Tours Kids Passport
that's going to includedesignated sections to note the
(10:13):
locations they're visiting, tickoff the The animals that they
see throughout the trip anddocument their exciting
adventures and sightseeingexperiences.
Depending on their age dependson the rest of the welcome
packet.
So kids that are ages 2 to 6,they also get a rainforest
stuffed animal and a kid's cap.
And they also get sweet treatsmade from local flavors.
(10:34):
If kids are a little older, that8 to 14 range, they're going to
get the sweet treats.
A waterproof portable wildlifeguide and the Costa Rica
baseball hat.
And I just think that's reallycool for them to like really
make the kids feel excited to behere.
ryan_2_12-02-2024_210607 (10:46):
Yeah,
I really like that.
Fun.
j_1_12-02-2024_210607 (10:48):
Day two
you're spending all around the
jungle.
First, you're going to startwith a tour in the area's iconic
hanging bridges and gain insightinto the spectacular biological
corridor in the area.
You're going to be exploring theupper and lower canopies of the
lush rainforest as you traversea one of a kind bridge system
(11:10):
that is supported by concretebricks, so it's safe.
As you go through thosecanopies, you're going to be
seeing all sorts of animalslocal to that area.
Later in the day, you're goingto go through a guided walk
through sloth territory.
I don't think I've ever besaying the word sloth territory,
but that sounds so fun.
ryan_2_12-02-2024_210607 (11:29):
ha ha.
j_1_12-02-2024_210607 (11:29):
You're
going to visit a family run eco
project and find out why slothsare so special.
Um, I think that's really coolbecause you're really part of
the story there going to afamily run area.
The next day you're heading outonto the water.
So you're doing a uniquefloating wildlife safari.
(11:52):
And all of these tours areprivate by the way.
as you're going, they can alsobe customized to things.
Maybe you want to spend a littlemore time in one area or
another.
That's all possible.
your private driver is going topick you up.
They're going to take you to thePiñas Blancas River.
You're going to board a vessel.
and enjoy a privately guided twohour safari style floating
(12:13):
adventure down the Lower PeñasBlancas River.
You're going to be able to relaxand immerse yourself in the
tranquility of the rainforest, listening to the sounds,
observing the sights, and you'regoing to keep your eyes open for
animals like monkeys, toucans,Jesus Christ lizards that
actually do walk on water, iguanas, and so many birds.
(12:36):
During the journey here, you'realso going to make a stop at a
local riverside farm and betreated to a locally prepared
snack and enjoy a refreshingbeverage before you go back to
the hotel for a little bit of abreak.
This day, yeah, this day doeshave a second half, which is a
twilight tour.
as night falls, you're going toset out on a privately guided
twilight tour.
(12:57):
You're going to meet a localCosta Rica family and gain
insight into the region'secology and culture.
You're going to immerse yourselfin your family in an intriguing
and engaging night experienceduring which Mother Nature's
elusive treasures revealthemselves.
in the form of diverse wildlife.
how cool.
So you're going to be out thereat night looking for amphibians,
(13:19):
reptiles, mammals, insects, while you're doing like this
short little one mile walk.
And then you're going to go totheir local home, and have a
snack and have a cup oflegendary Costa Rican coffee.
ryan_2_12-02-2024_210607 (13:34):
Very
nice.
j_1_12-02-2024_210607 (13:35):
Alright,
this one is definitely up Ryan's
alley, and this is also a reallyimmersive experience So this is,
day four.
today your family is going toexperience a showcase of Costa
Rica's rich culinary culture andunique biodiversity.
So you're going to start byvisiting a local wildlife center
that's dedicated to therehabilitation and protection of
(13:57):
the country's beloved animals.
You're going to have a tour ofthe facility and learn about the
efforts that go on there torescue injured and orphaned
animals.
Later on, you're going todiscover some Costa Rican
cooking with Donna Mara, a localChachagua woman.
you're going to be greeted witha refreshing tropical drink and
(14:17):
then learn how to prepare yourown homemade delicious
tortillas.
The whole family is going to gettheir hands dirty mixing the
dough, making the tortillas.
She's going to help you cook thetortillas as well as a whole
meal over a wood fire stove.
ryan_2_12-02-2024_210607 (14:32):
I love
this.
j_1_12-02-2024_210607 (14:33):
day five
is now we are going to be
transferring over to the beachpart of the vacation.
But before you get there, you'regoing to drive through the dry
forest of Guanacaste and aboutmidway to getting to the beach,
you're going to stop to visitThe spectacular Llanos del
Cortez waterfall, is and it'sconsidered one of Costa Rica's
(14:53):
most beautiful waterfalls.
It actually descends into a pondwith a white sandy beach, and
you get to hang out here for alittle while you have lunch.
ryan_2_12-02-2024_210607 (15:02):
I
really love that.
So let's talk about where you'regoing to be staying at this next
stretch of the trip.
You're going to be at Bosque delMar.
it's a beautiful, peacefulbeachfront property within
Hermosa Bay.
And resonates with naturaldistinction.
it plays home to the spectacularand secluded Basque Del Mar from
(15:22):
Liberia International.
The sanctuary resides a 30minute drive away and the rooms
reflect the natural habitatcharacterized by earth tones and
details full of nature andprivacy situated on the beach.
Let the tide caress you to sleepand welcome you in the morning
It has an open air concept, offers semi formal dining
(15:45):
experiences that can be enjoyedthroughout the day, So this
sounds like a wonderful place tostay, doesn't it?
once you arrive to that area andyou settle in for the night The
next day is all about a congotrail canopy ziplining three

where you'll soar through thecosta rican treetops Reaching

way keep your eyes peeled formonkeys and other wildlife
foraging in the canopy Fun funfun
j_1_12-02-2024_210607 (16:25):
