Speaker 1 (00:00):
You know.

Speaker 2 (00:00):
What's so crazy, by the way, is that we have
chatted so many times, but I think this is the
first time I've had you as a guest on America's
Dance thirty.

Speaker 3 (00:09):
What the heck is wrong with me?

Speaker 4 (00:11):
I don't know what's going on. It's good to be here, man,
How you doing made it?

Speaker 3 (00:17):
Trevor Matt Keavy.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Welcome to America's Dance thirty for the first time.

Speaker 5 (00:24):
Jo, we're having us dude dance.

Speaker 4 (00:39):
Counting down the biggest dance songs in the country.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
This is America's Dance thirty.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Congratulations on this new smash Fine Love Now with Punctual
and Raphaela. It is such an incredible song.

Speaker 4 (00:55):
Thank you so much, dude. I'm stokes finally out. We're
excited about this one for sure.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Yeah, it's really good and not only that, but also
even bigger. Congratulations on the ten year anniversary of cheat Codes.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
That is amazing.

Speaker 6 (01:09):
Hey, I don't know, I don't know the specific day. Yeah,
I don't know the day, you guys, it is me
a cake.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
Do you remember what month back in twenty fourteen you
guys got together.

Speaker 7 (01:20):
It was in the summer, right, Yeah, Like, we're definitely working,
working in the summer, so it's probably it's definitely been
over ten years.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
I would say, well, think back to day one and
be one hundred with me. Did you think that you
guys would still be together ten years later?

Speaker 4 (01:37):
It's wild how fast time flies. Honestly, if you like
ten years, like the fact that it's been that long,
like I would have, like, I don't know. It seems
like just yesterday we just started. So the fact that
it's been ten years, like I don't know that it's crazy,
And I think we'll be around at least another ten
So keep it going.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
Yeah, let's hope. Hold on, let me knock on wood
for you guys.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Hold on, I can't even see right now, so I'm
just gonna take my glasses off, and blind.

Speaker 6 (01:59):
Music might not be a thing in ten years.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
You know, the AI, it'll be the AI version of
cheat codes. That's all right.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
I can't wait to talk all about fine Love now
and find out how the song was born with Punctual
and Raphaela. But first, let's get to know cheat codes
better with Finky's.

Speaker 4 (02:20):
First Perfect.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
Now.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
I love finding out the origin story of artists. Now
I know that you guys got together and you were
friends like as teenagers, right.

Speaker 4 (02:35):
I met Matt when I was eighteen. I was sixteen,
he was eighteen. I guess we played at a pizza
place in Saint Louis when I went on tour through there,
and a couple years later we reconnected and lived together
off and on. So yeah, we known each other for
a long long time, and I met Kevy a few
years later when we and Matt were buddies.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
Was music the first thing that you guys wanted to
get into when you were growing up?

Speaker 3 (02:57):
Or was there something else you wanted to be? Trevor?

Speaker 4 (03:00):
When I was younger, It's funny. I used to want to, like,
I want a restaurant or whatever, But actually I'm terrible
at cooking, so that would be a good idea for me.
But you gotta follow your skill. I switched over to music,
you know, so I guess from a young age, I
definitely wanted to do it.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
And I used to want to be an NBA player.
What happened?

Speaker 6 (03:20):
You got injured?

Speaker 1 (03:21):
I got injured, man injured reserve.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
Ah that sucks, Yeah, me too, But I just wasn't
tall enough.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
So Matt, what about you?

Speaker 6 (03:31):
I actually was really into basketball too, and then once.

Speaker 7 (03:34):
I got to high school, I was like, I'm not
good enough man, Like you have enough of those moments
where you're like, I can't dunk.

Speaker 6 (03:41):
I can't. I'm not gonna be.

Speaker 7 (03:43):
Taller than six foot two, which is like barely tall enough,
you know. I was like, I'll just focus on music.
So once I hit high school, I was like, I'm
just gonna do music.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
Well, thank god, you guys all parlayed into music. We
got cheat Codes. Now, the name cheat Codes was from
Kevy's brother, Is that right?

Speaker 3 (04:00):
It was inspired by that?

Speaker 4 (04:01):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (04:01):
Yeah, I was telling Matt a story about that.

Speaker 8 (04:03):
My brother told me when I was like a kid
and he was playing at Madison Square Garden and he
told me he got the cheat code of life. And then, uh,
I told Matt that story and then Matt's like, cheat codes,
that's the name here we are.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
So that probably answers My next question was cheat Codes
the first name you guys were going to go with
or were there other names you were considering for the
artist project?

Speaker 4 (04:24):
I mean, was that it it was just it was
just cheat Codes?

Speaker 6 (04:27):
Yeah, I think like cheat codes. The name kind of
also inspired.

Speaker 7 (04:32):
The project of like where we wanted to take it
and like the idea of it, you know, kind of
gave us like a clear picture and vision of what
the project would be.

Speaker 6 (04:41):
So I think once we had the name, then.

Speaker 7 (04:42):
We were like, Okay, we definitely got to make music
like for this project because it's such a sick name.

Speaker 4 (04:47):
I remember when when they because I was working on
my own thing, and they had started the idea of
doing cheat codes, and when we were working on music together,
I remember thinking like, oh, cheat codes is such a
good name. Like I gotta I gotta be a part
of this somehow, so I got to figure it out.

Speaker 6 (05:00):
Now.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
That lends me to another question.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
Was the original plan always to produce music with Trevor
singing or was that something you guys decided on later
on in the project.

Speaker 4 (05:10):
I think early on we all we all decided that
we kind of wanted to have vocals on the songs,
like Matt and Kevy sang a couple of early songs
and Matt sang actually no, gosh, she ended up singing
it after it. But anyways, yeah, we all sing and uh,
I just kind of ended up singing a little bit
more on our vocals with our vocals.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Gotcha, Now do you guys. Remember the first show you
guys did as cheat Codes.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
Yeah, it was like it wasn't it in San fran right.

Speaker 9 (05:36):
Yeah, it was that the Audio is a place called
the Audio And we played with this group, this group
called Cut Snake, which Fisher you know, followed the Fish
he used to be in this group called Cut Snake,
so it was like Fisher his partner.

Speaker 7 (05:51):
And then we opened for them and it was like
like one hundred people like Max, Like I think it
was like two hundred capacity venue like Top, but we
opened like we didn't really know how to DJ or
like we didn't we didn't really.

Speaker 6 (06:03):
Have any club music, so like all of our songs.

Speaker 7 (06:05):
Were like one hundred bpm, Like there was no transitions.
I think there was like pauses between every song and
we played for like thirty minutes and then we just.

Speaker 6 (06:14):
Like danced like the whole time that Fisher.

Speaker 4 (06:16):
And remember that show.

Speaker 7 (06:20):
We were just like let's just go in the crowd
and like we like never really been to a club before.

Speaker 6 (06:24):
So it's cool.

Speaker 3 (06:25):
So who booked you guys for that show?

Speaker 4 (06:29):
I don't remember about as it was probably like.

Speaker 6 (06:31):
Disco Donnie or something like that.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
I like that you got to throw Disco Donnie under
the bus for that one.

Speaker 6 (06:37):
Well, we were opener. It was it was a lot pressure.

Speaker 4 (06:40):
I'm sure it was like a good show. We were
just paid it so much. Shit.

Speaker 6 (06:43):
I don't think he lost money because of us or anything.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
So well, speaking of shows, what's the first thing that
you guys do on show day?

Speaker 3 (06:52):
And what's the first thing you do when you're done playing?

Speaker 4 (06:55):
Ooh, I mean, I guess the beginning of the day
is just like just like any other day. It's kind
of started the morning like normal, let's let's have to
go to the airport, in which case we have to
wake up early early sometimes and the head over to
the airport. But right after, right after we're done playing,
I don't know, time to go to the hotel and
go to sleep. Yeah, talk about some times after the show,
you know, not a bad idea.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
Now, not only do you guys have a ton of
dance smashes, but you've also got songs that crossed over
to top forty, like no Promises. Do you remember the
first time you heard one of your songs on the radio?

Speaker 4 (07:37):
Yes? I do. Actually, we actually we.

Speaker 7 (07:40):
Did, like really early on, we did some stuff with
we found new music they had like a radio thing
where where.

Speaker 6 (07:46):
Was it in like Malibu or was like or something.

Speaker 7 (07:50):
Yeah, so it was like really early on they like
wanted to come out.

Speaker 4 (07:54):
We lost Matt I'll take but yeah, really early on.
I think our very first song we released called Visions,
somebody named m grant Owens supported us and played the
song very early and we've got to come out and
perform the song acoustically and hear the song on the radio,
and that was really cool moment for us.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
Does it ever get old hearing your songs on the.

Speaker 4 (08:16):
Radio, No, it's always exciting.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
Well, speaking of new songs, when was the first time
that you tested this new smash?

Speaker 6 (08:23):
I think we've been playing it since last year.

Speaker 7 (08:25):
I think me and Kevy played it in Asia like
November December of last year.

Speaker 4 (08:29):
Wow, November a while actually.

Speaker 7 (08:32):
Yeah, I think we did a show in Bali and
we were like it was like us in a lock
and somebody else and it was like a big crowd.
We're like, we got to test out the song and
seemed like people really liked it.

Speaker 4 (08:42):
So we alway every songs this early. For this one,
we kind of just wanted people to hear We really
excited about it.

Speaker 3 (08:48):
God, it's such a smash.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
Well, finally in honor of Fine Love Now, it's got
the lyrics don't be afraid to fall?

Speaker 3 (08:56):
But what is your first major fear? Kevy?

Speaker 8 (09:00):
I don't like like being up at heights without like
being on a roller coaster. Roller coaster, it's okay, but
if I'm like at the top of like a ledge
looking over, I just I don't like it.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
Yeah, that's terrifying.

Speaker 4 (09:12):
I gotta have a fear of falling too, So I'm there.
I'm there with Kevy too.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
Aren't those dreams the worst? When you have a dream
where you're falling?

Speaker 5 (09:19):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (09:19):
Yeah, that is so bad.

Speaker 6 (09:25):
I don't know. I don't really like doctors.

Speaker 3 (09:32):
That's your fear as doctors.

Speaker 1 (09:35):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
That is such a typical male thing to say. Let's
talk about this smash. How was Fine Love Now born
with Punctual and Raphaela.

Speaker 7 (09:48):
Yeah, they said this the song last year and it's
been like a journey us finishing it. It didn't originally
have like Trevor's vocals on it, and the production changed
a lot, but we actually we were originally gonna have
we had it on this like it was going to
come out like way earlier in the year, but there's
like people at the label that like got fired or

(10:11):
like quit or something.

Speaker 6 (10:12):
So then we had to like come up with a
whole different plan.

Speaker 7 (10:15):
And it became a whole different thing. So but yeah,
we're stoked, and functional guys are dope. They're they're working
on bb Rex's album right now, Like they're really sick producers,
like truly cool to get to work with them.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
And at what point did you guys decide to add
Trevor to it?

Speaker 4 (10:30):
I guess a few months, five six months ago. It
was one of those things where were like we we
had and we were listening back to we kind of
you know, once in a while we think, what would
it sound like if there was kind of a male
vocal on there and it sounded like a duet instead
of just a you know, female vocal. And I tried
it out and we thought it sounded good and decided
to roll with it.

Speaker 2 (10:49):
Well, it definitely sounds good with both of you guys
on it now. Something I love to find out is
how many different v's there are to a song from
when you start working on it, all the tweaking that
goes on to when you finally put it out. Do
you remember what the final v was of Fine Love?

Speaker 3 (11:05):
Now?

Speaker 4 (11:06):
I don't know how many versions of you guys think
there are.

Speaker 7 (11:09):
It was probably at least like twelve or something because
they had they had at least like six or seven
before they even sent it to us. Yeah, they showed
us some of the versions too.

Speaker 3 (11:19):
And how different was it.

Speaker 7 (11:20):
It didn't used to have the strings. That used to
just be like a piano or like a synth sound.

Speaker 4 (11:25):
Yeah, the drums are totally different. Changed a lot. There
was different verses before, so it kind of yeah, it
took a lot of different turns.

Speaker 2 (11:33):
Well, I got to be honest, I'm glad you guys
went with the strings because that, I mean, that makes
the song.

Speaker 3 (11:37):
It is so good in it.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
Congratulations on this smash now, not only that, but you've
also got the way it is climbing the charts. How
did you decide to take on an iconic song like
that from Bruce Hornsby?

Speaker 4 (11:51):
Yeah, that was fun because it was one of those
things where we had gotten the opportunity to play the
Forum with two friends and leading up to we wanted
to have a song to kind of play with them
at the show. And we'd gone back and forth, like
on a bunch of different ideas, and I guess like
a month before the show, we had sent them the
idea and we both liked it a lot. So it

(12:14):
just kind of went from there and went back and
forth on getting the production right and laid down my
vocals and we got it done just in time to
play at the show with them.

Speaker 2 (12:23):
When you're doing an interpolation like that, do you get
worried about what the original artist thinks about the song.

Speaker 7 (12:29):
I had to be educated because I was like more
familiar with the Tupac.

Speaker 4 (12:36):
He didn't know about the Bruce Hornsby.

Speaker 8 (12:37):
You know.

Speaker 3 (12:38):
Yeah, that's so funny that takes it happen.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
That takes me back to I remember having somebody in
the studio and they didn't know that Missing You was
an original song before he did he did it.

Speaker 3 (12:50):
I'm like, oh god.

Speaker 6 (12:54):
Come on, yeah.

Speaker 7 (12:55):
When we originally did we did the song sex. Keavy
and Shrevor they had never heard a Salt and tepo.
They were like, what is what do you mean let's
talk about sex.

Speaker 6 (13:03):
I was like, you know, like a song from the nineties.
They're like, I don't know about that song?

Speaker 7 (13:07):
But it almost like makes it, you know, because then
you can reimagine it.

Speaker 6 (13:11):
In a different way.

Speaker 7 (13:12):
Absolutely, instead instead of it, yeah, instead of it being
like a cover. You know, you wanted to be like, oh,
I like that melody, Like let's put it in like
how I would place this melody into like a modern
track or whatever, versus like I'm just gonna like copy
the original, you know, I don't think that's that's fun.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
Well, this is going to be a stretch and I
probably should have researched this question first.

Speaker 3 (13:32):
But has Bruce Hornsby reached out?

Speaker 4 (13:34):
No, I haven't talked to Bruce. I just didn't know
if he said listening.

Speaker 6 (13:40):
Bruce, what's your beef?

Speaker 5 (13:41):
Bro?

Speaker 6 (13:42):
Reach out?

Speaker 3 (13:45):
We need to link you guys up.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
