And then you got Steve Bannonout there calling for Trump to

World war ii in europe beganwith an invasion of poland by
nazi germany in september 1939.
I was just listening to akennedy podcast and she and a

it and she tells about the visitand all the stuff that she saw
and that you may not see or hearanywhere else, and it was quite
eye-opening.
I mean, I've known about it too, but to keep hearing about it,

my vacation to go over there andexperience this and go through
it, my goodness.
So Britain and France declaredwar in response but could do
little to help the Poles.
In the spring of 1940, germanleader Adolf Hitler staged
successful invasions of Denmark,norway, belgium, holland and
other nations.

Almost immediately, britishleaders began envisioning ways
to get back across the channelin an amphibious assault,
eventually codenamed operationoverlord that's the official
name of it.

hitler began to build formidabledefenses along the entire
channel coast, which was calledhis at Atlantic Wall.
In 1941, nazi Germany invadedthe Soviet Union, formerly a
partner.
Also, by the end of the year,the United States entered the
war after Japan, an ally ofGermany, attacked the American

base at Pearl Harbor, hawaii.
The entry of the US into thealliance meant the scope of the
planned cross-channel invasionwould grow Soon.
American forces began arrivingin England to train for the
invasion.
At the Tehran Conference inNovember of 1943, allied leaders
decided to cross-channelinvasion would occur in the

spring of 1944, with AmericanGeneral Dwight Eisenhower as
Supreme Allied Commander of themultinational operation.
By the way, it was reallysupposed to be, it was scheduled
for June 5th 1944, but therewere storms coming in and they
decided to wait a day.
In case you didn't know that, alittle bit of information would

be needed.
What equipment each man had tocarry and the essential question
of how to keep this a secretfrom the enemy were debated and
planned.
The final plan called for some156,000 men to land on five
beaches on the coast of Normandythe Americans at Utah and Omaha

in the West, and the Britishand Canadians at Gold, juneau
and Sword.
They would be bolstered byparachute and glider landings
and supported by some 5,000ships and 11,000 airplanes.
That is a lot.
Planners set the date for June5th 1944 for the landings, but a

storm that day meant it wouldbe too cloudy to bombard German
coastal defenses and too windyfor men to disembark from
landing craft.
British meteorologist JamesStagg advised General Eisenhower
of a temporary break in theweather clearer skies and
lighter winds which wouldpotentially allow invasion to

commence 24 hours later.
With his assault, naval and aircommanders all saying go.
Eisenhower gave the order.
And wow, I mean you talk aboutkids being men that day, because
that's what they were.

And there was.
So I wonder.
Oh, also, I was curious to seehow many of these veterans were
still living today.
