Brain Death or Cardiac Death? Did you realize there is a difference?  Dr. Thomas A. Nakagawa, M.D., FAAP, FCCM will empower you with knowledge about the neurological criteria and the steps leading to the determination of brain death.  He will clarifying various terminology, such as touching upon the difference between cardiac death and brain death, a brainstem reflex, coma, vegetative state and other terminology which are often incorrectly used. 

 

Dr. Nakagawa is actively involved in the area of organ and tissue donation, neurologic and circulatory determination of death, end-of-life care, and ethical issues, consulted for the American Academy of Pediatrics, co-author for the pediatric organ donation and transplantation policy statement and consultant for issues pertaining to pediatric organ and tissue donation and determination of circulatory and neurologic death.  He served on high-level national organ donation and transplantation committees and is an international consultant for organ donation and transplantation issues pertaining to children.

Dr. Nakagawa is a board certified pediatric critical care specialist, the Associate Medical Director for Honorbridge Organ Donation Services in Chapel Hill, NC, and a Professor of Pediatrics at The University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville with clinical appointment in the Department of Pediatrics. 

He has been published in over 120 various publications including the pediatric donor management and dosing guidelines utilized by organ procurement organizations to manage pediatric organ donors, authored the 2011 updated guidelines for the determination of brain death in infants and children from the Society of Critical Care Medicine, American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the Child Neurology Society (CNS).
