A city can spend decades wishing for a stage—or it can build one that becomes the neighborhood’s favorite seat. I sit down with Christine Lee, president and CEO of the Arcadia Performing Arts Foundation, to share how Arcadia transformed cafeteria concerts and borrowed auditoriums into a state-of-the-art venue that students and families can claim as their own. From the first blueprints to opening night, this is the story of a community that funded a dream and now fills it with music, theater, and memory.

There's a lot of thingshappening in studio.
I have a special guest,Christine Lee.
She is with the ArcadiaPerforming Arts Center here in
Arcadia, and Christmas hasarrived at the Performing Arts
Center.
Welcome, Christine.

Christine Lee (02:19):
Hi, Christine.

Christine Zito (02:20):
I love your name.
I know it's a great name, isn'tit?
I I love it.
I love it.
Totally.
You know what?
What I like to do first is toget to know who Christine Lee
is.
So, um, are you an Arcadian?
Were you born here inCalifornia, United States,
anywhere on the planet?

Christine Lee (02:40):
Well, yeah, my name is Christine Lee.
I have been living in Arcadiasince 1991, so over 35 years of
residence.
And I used to live on theCamino Rio, and then I moved to
uh north of the foothill on in1998.
I had two children.

(03:01):
Um my daughter and my son, theyboth went through the Arcadia
School District, started fromthe elementary school, middle
school, and then finallygraduated from Arcadia High
School.
Both of them play violin.
Oh wow.
So I have been involved in themusic program as a volunteer

(03:24):
parent uh since they were young.
Okay.
So uh, of course, uh in highschool I was volunteer parents
for the Arcadia Music Club, uh,shop round the trips and uh
camp.

Christine Zito (03:40):
The trips like they're going on competition.

Christine Lee (03:43):
Yeah, competition.
They also went out to Florida.
And I've been shop around, andI think I was able to connect
with so many great parents.

Christine Zito (03:56):
I'm pouring coffee if you hear something
pouring, just so you know.

Christine Lee (04:00):
From Arcadia.
And we have a lot of greatparents that had children
already graduated from highschool, but they still devoted
in all these events, includingthe festival band.
My kids were in the orchestra, but you know, the music club,
it's a big family.

Christine Zito (04:17):
Are they still doing music now?

Christine Lee (04:19):
They they're not.
But they they've been enjoyingthe music.
They started playing andlearned the violin piano when
they were like in the elementaryschool.

Christine Zito (04:31):
So did you know I played the I played the
violin?
Wow.
Starting in elementary, that'smy primary instrument, and then
I learned the piano, but Ilearned the piano by ear.
I never learned it by lookingat the notes and stuff like
that.
But the violin, I love theviolin.
I played it for a while.
Yeah I can't play it much.
I I would have to take a lessonor two.

Christine Lee (04:50):
I grew up uh also with a parent that kind of um
feel the music is veryimportant.
So I started playing piano whenI was three years old, but then
I kind of like stopped for awhile after.

Christine Zito (05:04):
You know, I was isn't music emotional and it's
powerful.
Yes, it really is.
I mean, when you think ofmusic, I can play I could I can
listen, I hear a song and all ofa sudden it'll just take me
back to that time.

Christine Lee (05:16):
Yes.

Christine Zito (05:17):
Because music can do that to the emotions.
It's pretty amazing.

Christine Lee (05:20):
Yeah, it it is amazing.
And uh um that's also one of mypassion, you know, uh music,
performing arts, and that's whyyou know I was invited to be the
board members, you know, forArcadia Performing Arts
Foundation.

Christine Zito (05:36):
Right.
Are you a member you're a boardmember?

Christine Lee (05:39):
Are you the president or are you I uh I
started in 2016 as a boardmember and currently I'm the
president and CEO for ArcadiaPerforming Arts Foundation.
Wow, we have a celebrity instudio.

Christine Zito (05:53):
Woohoo.

Christine Lee (05:56):
But anyway, I was uh involved with the Performing
Arts Foundation since 2016, anduh I enjoyed that kind of um
volunteers and also uhpassionate.

Christine Zito (06:13):
Yeah, putting it into all those shows.
I have to I just have to tellyou something, Christine.
Growing up, I always wanted tobe an actress.
I always wanted to win anOscar.
I did a lot of stage plays.
I did um Shakespeare.
Now I didn't like Shakespearein the beginning because he's
hard to understand.
Uh-huh.
But once you get to know hisstories, I loved um I loved

(06:35):
doing the plays, and I didTaming of the Shrew, and the
director compiled these uhmonologues and submitted it and
asked me to compete on theSouthern Californian level and
compete with this monologue, andI won first place.

Christine Lee (06:51):
Oh wow, Shakespeare! Amazing! I know!
Have you ever come to Arcadiastage?
Uh their fall plays and alsotheir spring musical.
You know, Arcadia High Schoolhas a very amazing theater
program.

Christine Zito (07:08):
I have to confess, as I confess here on
Arcadia FYI, and I've been I'veI've been back in Arcadia since
uh 2015, and I have not been.
I am so sorry, I confess.
Here's a here's someone that'sa total theater, passionate
theater person.
And I think it's just becauseyou know you bec when you become
a business owner, you just getso consumed with your business.

(07:31):
That's that's not an excuse, but it I need to go.

Christine Lee (07:35):
Yeah, they just have a very amazing uh Christmas
Carol play, the fall play, uhcompleted in November, the mid
November.
And they have their musicalcoming up in March.
And this year they're gonnahave Miss Saigon.

Christine Zito (07:50):
So you gotta reserve your time.
I am gonna, you know what?
I I wanna go.
I wanna s I just love it.
Gosh, now it's like now I dlet's just go.
Can we just go to theperforming arts center right
now?

Christine Lee (07:59):
Oh and just email for that.

Christine Zito (08:04):
Now a performing arts center, when you think of
a of a performing arts center,it's its own entity, you know.
But this performing arts centeris actually on the campus of
Arcadia High School.
Okay, as much as I love thewhole idea of education because
I was a high school teacher forsix years, but why did they put

(08:27):
the the a performing arts centeron the campus of a high school?

Christine Lee (08:31):
Well, this is uh Arcadians uh a history, okay, of
the Arcadian.
Okay, the Arcadian people wereactually long for to have a
performing arts center since1940, 50, 60 for a long, long
time.
There were a coupleorganizations had tried to raise

(08:52):
the fund, build the center, because we do have the need in
our community, and uh but didnot go through.

Christine Zito (09:02):
Oh god, that's a long time.

Christine Lee (09:04):
Yeah, so uh not very few people know that
Arcadian people love to have aperforming art center since you
know 90s, 50s, you know.
Right.

Christine Zito (09:16):
I mean well look at Arcadia and the historic uh
landmark that it is.
You have the Santa Anita Park, you have the Arboretum, you have
such nostalgicness.
Oh the the the Derby.
Yes, you have to have aperforming arts center.

Christine Lee (09:28):
Yes, yes, that's why it was it's a dream.
It's uh a dream come true forArcadian.
Um so in 2020 2006, I'm sorry,2006, so the uh the school
district is gonna run in for amajor I fundraising.
And they they at the time theyconsidered to kind of build the

(09:51):
center inside the campus so thatwe had wonderful performing
arts program for the highschool, the whole youth
district, that the student canyou know have the opportunity to
have this beautiful performingarts center.

Christine Zito (10:06):
Right.

Christine Lee (10:06):
You know, my kids graduate back in 2008 and nine,
back in those years, AcadiaHigh School did not have a
performing arts center.
So our orchestra program had totravel to Pasadena High School,
auditorium, to have their fullconcert.
Or they they might perform atlike a North Gym or South Gym,

(10:31):
not a real performing artcenter.
And the theater program had asmall theater where it sits
about 100 people, very smallstage.
So in 2006, and I'm so gladthat the district and then also
Arcadian people really supportthe idea to kind of help and

(10:52):
improve the whole district inmany, all the school district
schools, including building anew performing art center.
And that was approved andpassed, of course, and so that
was in a major I it's a bong ofin our property tax.
And then since then they builtthe center that the center

(11:14):
completed in 2012.
Oh wow, that's then they openedon 2013.

Christine Zito (11:21):
Wow.
So that took a while for it tobe built, but man.
That you know what that I likethe idea, what a dream come true
after all these years.
And um how many okay there's somany questions I want to throw
you at one time now.
How ma now with the the newperforming arts center, which is
beautiful, because you know,I'll drive by there and I'll be

(11:43):
just like, wow, I mean I mean tohave students you know be
prideful and say, hey, we have aperforming arts center on our
campus.
How many people does it sitnow?

Christine Lee (11:55):
It seats about eleven hundred to twelve
hundred.
Really?
Yeah, it's a it's a verystate-of-art facility and it's a
great facility.
If you've never been there, youdefinitely, definitely, you
know.
Go.
I'll I'll definitely personallyinvite you to go sometime when
you're available.

Christine Zito (12:14):
Oh yeah, I'm gonna I'm on the website right
now and I'm looking at theseating.
And this is really this isreally nice orchestrate
orchestrate of, if I can sayseating, because you have people
facing the stage and thenthere's like um seating on the
side.

Christine Lee (12:33):
Right there.
Like a balcony.
We have the balcony on theside, but then the center seat
is uh um kind of goes up.
It's very I think it's a verynice auditorium each time when
I'm in there um enjoying allthis performance and concert
theater program.
You have the best, you know, umfeeling sitting in there, like

(12:58):
you're part of that.
Right.
And it has screens and then thestage is very good.

Christine Zito (13:03):
Yeah, you can see the screens, and then you
got the perspective, the pianoon stage with the pers
perspective looking out into theaudience.
Beautiful.

Christine Lee (13:11):
Yeah.

Christine Zito (13:11):
It is just beautiful.

Christine Lee (13:13):
Yes, it is a very beautiful performing art
center.
As an Arcadian, you know, resident homeowner for over 35
years.
I'm so proud that Arcadia has abeautiful performing arts
center that had built andcompleted in 2012.
Now it's over twenty years.
So it we tried, the thefoundation tried to help the

(13:36):
performing arts center on anykind of you know major upgrades.
Of course, it's owned by theschool district.
The school district helped themkind of do the perform, I mean
the the regular maintenance.
The the centers used by thestudent, the whole district
student, you know, over 80% ofthe time, of course.

(13:58):
Yeah.
But there are still availableum weekends or days that can be
rend rended to the outside umorganization using.

Christine Zito (14:13):
Just do some monologues.
Hey, I could do my Shakespearemonologue.

Christine Lee (14:16):
Oh yeah, you could do some like a talk show.
I remember you.

Christine Zito (14:20):
You know, okay, so okay.
The Performing Arts Center.
When are are plays that areperformed on the stage, is it
just for the high school?
Do you guys ever do auditionsfor the public to come and
audition?

Christine Lee (14:34):
We haven't done that much, but you know, that's
a good idea.
I think our foundation is gonnado more uh to reach out to the
community.

Christine Zito (14:43):
I would come and audition.
I don't know if I'll get thepart, but you know.
No singing.
I don't sing.
I mean that would really thatwould clear the auditorium if I
started singing.
Yeah, we can do some uh speakerseries or even well, just like
plays, like other like otherperforming arts centers, you
know, uh like the wicked.

(15:04):
Okay, I don't sing.
But you know, they they allowthe public to come and audition.

Christine Lee (15:09):
Yes.
Yeah.
With along with the students, you know.
Yeah, we we can consider thatin the future, of course, that
you know, fulfilling our partpart of our commission, I mean
mission is to kind of supportthe performing arts education uh
in Arcadia throughout thedistrict and also our region,
and then bringing in theprofessional uh performers, uh

(15:32):
including Paul Anka, is our uhinaccurate uh artist back in
2013 when we first opened that.
And the the group that we hadinvited, you know, and performed
in our center, including AirSupply, Heard Albert and Nanny,
and Food Tops, Tempe Temptation, and Taylor, uh Steve Taylor,

(15:56):
and Danny Sapir, and then BigBabu's daddy.

Christine Zito (16:01):
They're great, they're great in concert.

Christine Lee (16:03):
Yeah, and then last year we have Teller Dan as
our Gala artist, and she waswonderful, and she has a very
famous song that everybody lovesit.

Christine Zito (16:14):
Right.

Christine Lee (16:15):
Tell it to my love.
Go ahead, sing it, Christine.
Go ahead, go ahead.
Christine Lee, not Christine Z.
Well, and then this year inSeptember, we have all for one.
Um that was a group that I'msure you know them.

Christine Zito (16:30):
Oh, yeah, they grew.
Okay, so okay, people thatdon't know, I used to live in
the Antelope Valley.

Christine Lee (16:35):
Uh-huh.

Christine Zito (16:36):
And all for one lived out there.

Christine Lee (16:37):
Yes, yes.

Christine Zito (16:38):
And so we we always met up with each other.
I I was on, I was a DJ outthere in the Antelope Valley for
a while.
So they would come in thestudio and and sing and stuff,
so because they lived there.

Christine Lee (16:48):
Yeah, check out our website.
We have posted some of thevideo when they were performing
in September.
Yeah, they they mentioned aboutbecause uh they were also
joining our uh they joined ourVIP session.
We have a gala dinner beforethe concert.
So they mentioned about theirexperience in the high school,

(17:09):
uh, play in the band and competein the and then have visit
Arcadians before.
So it was a very, verywonderful uh experience for
them.
That's why they they kind ofgrew up and then joined the band
and then joined the the groupand their harmonies.

Christine Zito (17:27):
Oh, so my gosh, they they are just fantastic
with you know, thinking of dramaand and plays, you know, that
that is a real you know iconwhen it comes to a performing
arts.
And that's why like you know, inviting this is just me,
inviting the outside public andworking with the students is is

(17:48):
great.
Students can learn from thosethat are more seasoned in
acting, and even the seasonedactors can learn from those that
are just starting out.

Christine Lee (17:58):
Yeah, you know, it could be definitely.
We we've been try to, you know, also to arrange the student to
incorporate the the artperformance with the artists,
including um Daniel Hull, youknow, back in uh 2015 or 16.
Yeah, we have including thestudents, and there were a
couple, you know, programperformance that we had include

(18:21):
the student performance, including their dance group,
orchestra, or the choir group.
The theater part we haven't hadchance, but you know, we we
definitely love to include inthis in the future that.
But you know, they also have avery, very uh amazing backstage

(18:42):
uh stage crap program.
I don't know if you know.
If you go to their performance, they have all these backstage
crap, you know, props,everything built.

Christine Zito (18:52):
So they build their own sets there.
Okay, see, I think that'sgreat.
Yeah.
So can people fly?
Do their things?
Do you have flying?

Christine Lee (18:59):
No, not yet.
Yeah, I know yet.
But recently they have upgradedtheir reading control system.
Just like you know, you know.
They had the system.
Oh, I want to play Peter Pan.
I want to be able to fly acrossthe stage.
But they're gonna do somethingspecial for the uh Miss Saigon
in the eighth uh March.
See, you gotta you gotta domore plays.
Oh, yeah, you gotta come and Imean the plays are gonna be

(19:21):
that's a secret.

Christine Zito (19:23):
I can't, but you gotta what we can talk about
that is not secret.
What's coming up uh in the inthis month?
Uh something very special ishappening December 14th.

Christine Lee (19:34):
Yeah, so the Letterman.

Christine Zito (19:38):
The Letterman, they're back.
They were here.

Christine Lee (19:40):
They were back, yeah.
They're they were here inApril.
Okay.
Um, their performance was youknow just fantastic.
Their voice is beautiful, threeguys, uh beautiful homies.
They have many, many a famoussong.

(20:15):
Um they've been in the industryover over 30 or 40 years, I'm
sure.
Yeah.
I know a lot of people knowthem.
Um and their famous song isincluding, you know, going out
of my hat, putting your hand onmy shoulder, the way you look
tonight.
And for Christmas, because theyare so great, you know, for the

(20:38):
April coaster, and they reachout and then say, Oh, we have a
very nice Christmas show.
Would you like, you know, us tocome back?
So, oh yeah, great, great, youknow, yeah, yeah.

Christine Zito (20:51):
You can hear some of their music in the
background if you gotta, I mean, because it is good music.

Christine Lee (20:56):
Yeah, and then they they're gonna have their
special arrangement forhallelujah and the 12th day of a
Christmas too.
So yeah, so you're gonna enjoytheir regular, you know, popular
hit, also some Christmas song.

Christine Zito (21:11):
Okay, so that's December 14th.
Okay, that's on a Sunday at 2p.m.
Tickets are on sale right now,and where can they get their
tickets?
They can go to the um the tothe website?

Christine Lee (21:21):
Yeah, our website, arcadia
arcadiaf.org.org.

Christine Zito (21:31):
Yeah, arcadia P A F.
Just remember that.
Arcadia P-A-F.org.
And it will all be on ArcadiaFYI also.
Um and you can uh buy ticketsthere.
So I think that's great.

Christine Lee (21:44):
And we also have a holiday special with the 15%
off, and you can type in thecode when you purchase the
ticket.
Make sure you type in the codeholiday holiday.

Christine Zito (21:55):
Holiday, let me write that down.
Holiday 15th.
And I will make sure that thatcode is on Arcadia FYI also.

Christine Lee (22:02):
Yes, yes, yes.

Christine Zito (22:03):
So there's so many things.
Okay, so you're gonna have tocome back, Christine, because
there's so many things I want totalk about, the Performing Arts
Center, and maybe we canactually do a podcast on stage.
Oh gosh, that would be sogreat.

Christine Lee (22:14):
Yeah, yeah.
Oh, by the way, good news isthat um, you know the road uh
Tournament of Roses.
Uh-huh.
The Rose Queen's actually fromArcadia High School.
I know.
Serena Cole.
Serena, I know.

Christine Zito (22:28):
She's gonna be, she's also gonna be at the
Christmas holiday.
Yeah, the holiday fair, umhelping out, giving away raffle
tickets and stuff.
Yeah, I think she's a she's abeautiful.

Christine Lee (22:38):
And then we also have a princess too.
So princess?
Yeah.
So from Arcadia High School.
We're so proud.
We have two this year in theroyal court.

Christine Zito (22:46):
I know, I think that it I you know what Arcadia
has so much to be proud of.
Even though there's so muchgoing on, there's so much good
going on.
Oh, yeah.
And that's what I like to focuson is things that are positive,
you know, and that's what Ilike to focus on.
That's why we're called ArcadiaFYI.

Christine Lee (23:01):
Yeah, and then also think about during the
holiday, if you go anywhere, tryto go visit anywhere, you're
gonna run into the trafficeverywhere.
If you go concert anywhere, this is the just our in our
backyard without traffic, freeparking.
So definitely free parking.
Did you hear that?
Free parking.
Yes, yes, yes.

(23:22):
You go definitely, you gottaenjoy this in our own backyard,
performing art center.
You don't have to go go far.

Christine Zito (23:30):
You have to go well, okay.
So when when the kids had toperform in Pasadena, they had to
pay for that parking.

Christine Lee (23:37):
Well, yeah, we have a school bus shuffled them
to Pasadena High School.
And I, you know, we as aparent, we have to go shop run.
But but now we have our ownPrefier Center.
So our students were so luckythat they were able to enjoy the
center they utilize it morethan you know, hundred percent

(23:57):
percent.
And so definitely, you know,I'm sure, you know, Arcadia has
the great school district.
Definitely.

Christine Zito (24:05):
It has a I mean they win what top 10 in
education.
So okay, looking at the I'm ontheir website, okay.
Again, that is arcadiapaf.org.
And looking at the calendar, Isee on December 20th, you have
uh Encore dance, the Nutcracker,2 p.m.

(24:26):
and 7 p.m.

Christine Lee (24:28):
Okay, so that is a performing arts center.
I think you're looking at theperforming arts center's uh uh
website now.
And that is um because the thecenter is owned by the school
district.
So that is I believe that's arental.
And I see it's not produced bycenter, it's not produced by the

(24:50):
set, you know, the foundation.
It's one of the rental, and I Ido know they they have that
coming.
So, you know, if you check ontheir their website, they do you
will see some of the programthat is outside the school
district program.
Oh, right.
But you will see all the schooldistrict programs, including
the data.

Christine Zito (25:13):
And then you have well I just thought it was
kind of cool to see thedifferent things that are going
on.
Yeah.

Christine Lee (25:18):
On their website, you cannot you you don't
purchase the ticket from it hasto be from the foundation
website, from our foundationwebsite, and it will connect you
to Purple Pass, where it's theticketing system, and then you
purchase online, and then you'llget your e ticket emailed to
you, or you can do well calltoo.

(25:38):
Okay, if you can't print it Ilike will call.

Christine Zito (25:41):
Yeah, just go up there and say, Hey, my name's
Christine, I'm going in.

Christine Lee (25:45):
Yeah, and you did you can select your own seats.
So we have different pricetiers.
You know, the price is startedwith 39 to 69.
That's and with the discount, Ithink it and that's already
including the fees.
Okay, just thought you know.
Oh my gosh, yeah, that's theprice already including the fee
because sometimes people think,oh, the pain the buying it

(26:07):
online, you know, it has thatfees that's very expensive.
If you go on Ticketmaster, yeah, they charge like a $30 to
$50 minimum, I think.
I believe.
So definitely our price isalready including a fee.
Very clear and you know, noconfusion.
So when you check out, you justmake sure you input that code,

(26:31):
discount code, and then you getyour discount code, holiday 15.

Christine Zito (26:35):
Yes.
