And that should be partof the challenge here.

So for QA being the bottleneck,like a lot of people will say
like, listen, that's reality.
Don't blame me.
That's the way things are.
QA is the bottleneck.
You do come at the end of the ofthe process and the the manual

testing process doesn't scale.
If we wanna manual testthis, if we want to manual
test faster, we gotta runout and hire more QA people.
And that's just not happening.
So in a lot oforganizations, even today.
QA is at the end of thecycle, so to speak, and
typically if you're usingScrum, QA gets the thing
to test late in the sprint.

And of course, they mayor may not finish testing
in the sprint so then whathappens if they don't finish?
Well, they'll continue testingin the next print so therefore
they're now labeled as thebottleneck but this perpetuates
the cycle because in the nextsprint they're testing upfront
in this and, and of coursethen in that sprint, they

won't finish everything sothis cycle has to be broken,
At some point but it'svery, very prevalent.
I've seen this everywhere.
I've worked, every singleplace I've worked, I've
seen the same behaviorevery, so we have categories
that are gonna talk about.
How we break the cycle.

We're gonna talk about those inthe, in the, in the, in the next
category, probably a little bit.
And then further category,subsequent categories.

a lot of places, you're lookingat them and blaming them for

Like, again, this is like thewaterfall bad design that like
I, I would advise against evenhaving in the first place.
But if you do have this designwhere the only chance you
get to find problems is atthe very end of the cycle.

And I guess it's becausethey're unfortunately closest

to the end of the line I mean,not all of these problems
are necessarily because of.
Development or testing, theycould be management decisions
that are delayed, right.
Causing the teamto change things.

You know, come in and say,now we need this right now.
So it's like, well,we're testing this.
Nope.
Drop it yeah.
But all of that gets forgottenabout when they talk about.

Delays for delivery.
There's a few other things inthis category to talk about.
Honestly, I want toget us through this.
This is like the lowest oflow hanging fruit of the QA
podcast because the inadequatedevelopment practices all come
out at this phase of like, oh,you didn't do any unit tests.
You have you know, you've gotjunior developers who aren't.
Properly being supervised, likeall these problems come out.

At the end yeah, you gotbusiness stakeholders who made
quick decisions that they didn'tthink through, like architecture
that you weren't involved in.
All this stuff comesout during the testing.
Yeah.
and a lot of times the shortcutis like, do less assessing
like, I was at a place one timewhere the shortcut was like, we
didn't do performance testinguntil it was deemed the time.

To do perform until wewere told it was time to
do performance testing.
And what, what endedup happening was the
performance testing.
It wouldn't be a problem.
With the performance testing,if we had just like kind of done
it incrementally and had thetest that kind of kicked off
and did a little stress testing,a little performance testing.
A, any developer answer atthat company for performance
(06:03):
testing was like, well, that'san unrealistic scenario until
we scaled to a point whereit was a realistic scenario.
And then funny story, thekickback then was like, well,
QA never load te we, we neverload tested in the past.
And QA is notstaffed to do that.
And I was like, well,no, no, no, no, no.
We did load tests and Icould tell you and I, sorry.

Om, I'm, I'm pickingup vibrations.
You're digging up allkinds of dead bodies that
are buried on this one inmy past because Oh, yeah.
Remember all scars?

I remember being blamed.
For not doing performancetesting and then being blamed
for doing performance testing.

It's a thankless task, right?

So I agree.
A lot of times peopleare being told, hurry
up shortcut the process.
So that means don't doenough testing, Basically,

I've even heard, and thisis gonna sound incredulous,
we don't need to doall that much testing.
Just do a little bitand then throw it out
there in production.
And if there are issues,we'll hear about 'em.
In other words thecustomers are qa.
That's a terrible attitude,but I've heard that.
So what is our actionabletakeaway from this section?
The state of realityis prevalent.

That where QA happens after.
Development happens inthe sprint and inevitably
there's never enough time.
I'm pretty sure everyonecan relate to the point I'm
about to make, which is QAcomplained they don't get the
user stories to test until thelast day or two of the sprint

Fundamentally wrong,and it can be.
But it's everywhere.
Well, we'll talk abouthow to fix that in.

I would say my takeaway hereis don't go chasing waterfalls.

So if we're gonna stop playingthe blame game, let's talk about
where quality really belongsin our process, the shift
Left movement advocates movingquality activities to earlier
in the development process.

Challenging the traditionalend of cycle qa.
So again, I, I am a hundredpercent on board with this.
I feel anyone who's spenta significant of time
of their career in QAis also on board with.
This is the idea that QA hasgotta be involved up front , at
the same session where you'retalking to the customers.
We need to be in the room.
The development teamneeds to be in the room.
A lot of stuff that we talkabout on the podcast about
(08:33):
cross-functional Teams.
Fully cross-functional teamswith all the skill it takes.
If you've got your QAperson, you tester, whatever
you wanna call them,if they're on the team
and they're talking tothe customers, they can
have the most impact here.
what I have found in my careerwhen I was a hiring manager.
Hiring QA folksinto the company.
What I would find is I wouldsee a career path developing

for my QA folks where they,they were the most predisposed.
To talking to customers, peoplein the room and they would
like to do that kind of stuff.
They like to talk to customers.
They like to solveproblems, they like to
understand the system.
And when the development teamand the management at that
company would let them do it,they would excel at it and.

For me as a hiring manager, Iwould start to see a natural
career progression, and it'dbe like, Hey, yeah, we hired
this person as a manual tester.
But then the more meetings theygo to and the more projects
they're involved in, the moreI see their talent accelerate
towards a more customer focusedrole, which is where I want them
as a person in the business.

And the more empathizing withthe customer and the more their
ability to deep dive with thecustomer and to understand
problems and stuff like that.
Every, everything in thiscategory of shift left, like my
qa, people are completely armed.
Now I wanna point that outbecause we have done podcasts
before where we have gotcritiqued in the comments.
Saying like, QApeople, what a joke.

That's ridiculous.
They should just shut upand test and do whatever.
Like we have gotten like peoplelike I'm not being flippant.
These are real comments by realpeople that should know better.
But these are Yeah.
Real people havethese pushbacks.

I think at the end of theday, QA, people don't just
wanna sit there and seeif a button's blue right.

What they really wanna do isunderstand how, basically the
customer's journey, right.
How is the customer using it?
So they can be sure thatwhatever comes out of their
hands and before it landsin the customer's hands,
right, is fit for purpose,it isn't just simply
checking point functionality.
So they welcome theopportunity, but unfortunately,
in most organizations, QAaren't even in the same

room as the customer ever.
That's a big problem.
It's hard for me to stay onone side in this argument
because I've been on both sides.

As a, the previous QA managerin my life i'm on one side.
Yeah.
And as a product manager,currently I'm on the other
side of the QA teams.
They, like you're talkingabout a lot of people that when
compared to your developers,they may be way more junior.

Sure.
And the company may notunderstand or see a reason to
put money into these people.
So without being trained as tolike what their potential is.
These people might naturallyresist change when, when in
fact you need them to basicallyunderstand how to code.
I'm not gonna say they needto be professional developers.

I'm gonna stop just short ofsaying that, but they need to
be able to code, like their lackof automation skill is gonna
hold them back in their career.
Their lack of understandingCICD processes and deployments
and stuff like that is gonnahold them back in their career.
And boy, I hope, I hope somebodywould challenge me on that one.
Because I, I like out of allthe, whenever we do prep for
the podcast, we like createthese like artificially

foreign against categories.
But in this category, like I,like there may be against here
for what I'm talking about.
, This is, I really believethis as a previous QA
manager in my career, isyou need to keep pressing
your folks to stay on top.
Of industry technologies andprocesses, which is like, DevOps
is like the conflicts of likeprocesses and technology, right?

You need to keep pressingyour people to stay on top of
the technologies because likethis stuff will accelerate and
, your people are left behind.
You can't have thatin any tech role.
You can't be left behind.
, You can't be left behind.
The technology becausethen you lose you, then
you can't catch up,Well, lemme try and lean
in with a couple of those.

So, so one is you mentionedCICD, so maybe in some
legacy organizations itmight be difficult to
implement CICD to begin with.
Sure and the culturethere is one of doing
everything manually.
So there's that again, notthat it can't be overcome.
But you may find thatas a situational thing
that people come across.

I mean, that's not areally big arguing point.

Well, I, I understood, but the,the category is shift left.
So like from the perspective ofshifting left, like you, yeah,
it might be difficult, the, theshift left philosophy is it's
difficult, but we need to do it.

And that requires aninvestment, right?
So the old legacy typeof companies might not
see value in investing inthat a hundred percent.
The other thing is.

These days, a lot of qaresources in quotes are
typically offshore and workingfor fraction of what you would
pay a, a good QA person here.

So are you going to now trainthose people to the point
where they can be customerfacing or are they simply

resources get, so that's theother problem now we have,
An organization willyou invest in that?
If you see your qa folksas a cost center, like you
have another fundamentalissue with your business.
I would say the, the, if, ifthat's the way that you're
treating your QA folks,you, you're, you have a
customer feedback loop thatis fundamentally broken right
(14:03):
now because like if you'reshipping off this testing
phase as like a stage gatethat goes to these other people
that you don't even reallyknow who are and whatever, and
they have to clear whatever.
You're like, you, if you'redoing that, you most likely are
not involving them, meaning theoffshore folks in this customer
feedback loop because the QApeople, like I, I've had, I've
(14:24):
had nearshore QA people theywere out of Costa Rica mm-hmm.
Before, and I had thempresent to the customer.
' cause we were all, 'cause likethe nice thing about going with
Costa Rica is like if you'reWest Coast or like one hour
from you, if you're east coast,you're like, two hours from you
is like, they're very close.
It works really well.
They're very close.
And they speak very goodEnglish and you know like they
teach they teach English inschools and stuff like that.

And I was employing theoffshore tester as the
subject matter expert totalk directly to customers.
I mean, I was in theroom, I was the safety
net for that whole team.
Yeah.
But I was like, listen,you guys have gone with
this offshore model.
And that's justthe way things are.
So like, I'm not, I'm notfighting city hall here.
I'm doing the best I can.
Yeah.

There's no reason to hidethis from your customers.
Let's go all in.
We're gonna have your QA person.
We're gonna move them into amore of a customer centric,
customer facing role.
Right.
And they're gonna be theperson, whenever we do demos,
they're gonna be the personthat we throw over to demo to
and they're gonna be the firstperson that, and then like the
developers jump in and they addtheir stuff and stuff like that.
The QA person already has like.
(15:27):
All the environments, all thetest scenarios, all that stuff.
They've got all this stuffworked out already because they
came from a more traditionalwaterfall style QA where right.
And they were stilldoing all that.
You know, theywere working a lot.
I mean, it was a lot of work forthe QA person, but , they were
on the spot ready to do almostany demo I needed immediately.

Yeah.
So with a day notice oflike, Hey, we're gonna
demo X, Y, Z tomorrow.
Can you support that?
I'm gonna throw over to you.
You kick it off.
You tell them how it works.
I'm gonna tell themwhy we did what we did.
You're gonna tell themhow it works and then
the developers are gonnajump in ad hoc as needed.
Yeah.
To answer questions talk aboutedge scenarios, stuff like that.
I think that's apretty good model.
(16:09):
You know your point earlierabout QA people, for the most
part, the offshore folks,especially ordinary offshore.
Being more junior so whenyou put them in front of
the customer, it's notlike sink or swim for them.
You know, in that scenario,the demonstrator, the QA
person could be nothing morethan just hands on keyboard
if they're a junior person.
Knowing that they havesupport in the room from
developers, from theproduct manager, et cetera.
(16:30):
And that's how they grow inconfidence and that's how
they grow in their skills.
But you have to give themthat, that opportunity.
A hundred percent.
Like it, it again, thebanner of shift left.
It would not have worked if Iwasn't there as their safety
net as the product manager.

Because again, like on on paper,none of them worked for me.
In reality, the wholeteam worked for me.

They took their prioritiesfor me, I was a tiebreaker,
that kinda stuff, and, andI set up all the demos.

I led off all of thecontacts, the business
contacts, stuff like that.

oh, my development teamjust, I would cast all the
blame on the development teamand take all the benefit.

So that's what I've seen is,okay, the product, people doing

the demos, getting the feedback.
And then offering excuses tothe customer saying, well, those
developers, they took shortcuts.
So those testers, right?
Yeah.
And then come back inand say, Hey, guess what?
The customer hated ityou guys need to do
better i've seen that.
And that's not agood environment.
And really it doesnot, bode well for your
journey to shift left.
Yikes.

There's a couple morethings that I didn't point

And then in the categorywhere everything's an
emergency, everything's aburning fire and everything

that did this before.
They wrote a big, like asoftware, policy document of
how software gets deliveredat that company basically from

And they wrote a bigprocess or whatever.
And then I remember it waslike a 20 page document.
It was a cooperation betweenthe project management that
tells you how old that thisis, project management,
QA, and development.
The three managers ofthose three departments.
Just came togetherand wrote the doc.
They all agreed to write thedocument and they brought

it up and it was a, 20 pagedocument of a full end to end.
Yeah, I'm sure they thoughtit was great and then it was
like 19 pages of software,of how things get done.
Yeah.
And then the last page wasThe emergency process, which
upends everything above it.
The emergency processis like, ignore all
previous pages, ignoreall previous instructions,

QA just wants perfection.

Qa perfectionist meaninglike, oh, all these.
All these decisionshave, have to have sign
off before we move on.
Like this, this, this, theidea of stage gates that have
to be bypassed that's whatthe arguing point in this
category will say is like,yeah, well you're just creating
all these stage gates andremember we're like qa oh, we

need documentation and we needlike a bunch of work items or
test case creation like, yeah.
I was at a company onetime where test, test case
creation was a big thing.
You would, you wouldcreate a test suite.
And in the test suitewould be test cases.
And then you run a newrelease and it would pull the
test cases and run the testcases against the release.

'cause it was a heavy,heavy automation.
Yeah.
But there was like 80plus, 80 to a hundred
test cases that would runlike to the point where.
The release because the testcases were automated, the
release would take so long torun, it could take hours to run.
So we nor what QA was inthe mode of doing was really

scrutinizing do we want thistest case to be a permanent
part of the regression thatruns when the build runs Because
like the build already takes.

The release alreadytakes X number of hours.

The product manager's job,job is to communicate changes.

Communication and Management,which wasn't exactly about

job to be communicating the.
Past, present, andfuture of the business.
And that, that's this what, why,why is the system broken here?
Like, what's happeningwhere we're asking our
QA people to do this?

I mean not that I'm sayingit's not within their
realm of capability.
'cause again, rememberfor sure, I really believe
the people working in QA.
That like that is a skillthey probably already have
if you're hiring for good QAtalent and you can nurture
that and have them being theones that really help the
product manager and the restof the team be good at this.
Yeah, yeah, definitelyagree with that.

Against UUAT beingthe bottleneck.
So a lot of the against forQA being the bottleneck have
to do with I'm just blamingeveryone else at this point.
That's what I'm sayinglisten, companies that want
I've been at companies thatwant like long drawn out
uas with like, oh God Yes.
At least X amount of time.

And you for, for every whatevermonths that you were in
development, we want a certain,certain number of weeks.
Where our UAT users get to shakedown the product and get to
give a thumbs up of the product.
Like I, I've beenthat, I've been there.

Reviews and approvals andall Executive reviews.

Legal compliance.

Legal review, compliance review.

Marketing, security,all kinds of stuff.

Pen testing, that kind of stuff.

Marketing sometimesneeds to take their time
to craft their release.
Does, or maybe you don'thave a product manager to do
the marketing function andmarketing, traditional marketing
does a marketing function, sothey need time to shake down
the product, take screenshots,take videos, do whatever.

And then you whatchange management for
all of that as well.
Absolutely.
So yeah, you're right.
All of these processescontribute to the delay.
They change, they all take,and they all take way longer
than q do, do because again,they, a lot of these people
that I just talked about,they're not technical people.

So from their perspective,they're like, what
are you talking about?
It takes us like an extra weekto do qa, but it takes these
people like two months, right.

To give their sign off.
But again, from my perspectiveas a product manager now.
Much later in my career thanwhen I did this is the product
people and the business folksthat have to make the decision
in the first place to dosomething or not do something.
Those people take way longerthan, oh, that's where
the model next really areway longer than a week.

And we're not even talking aboutthe main thing that most QA

people that might be listeningto this podcast deal with, which
is the changing requirements,even latent development.

But then it does still causea headache to the QA people.
If it happens on aregular basis, right.
Then it becomesingrained as a practice.
Should be mild practice,but It's a problem.
But if it happens once in awhile for the right reasons,

I'm sure people can adapt to it.
Decision making is one thing,but just like we talked
about with communication,without proper communication
all this stuff falls apart.
So let's talk about thecrisis of collaboration.
So communication, collaboration.

Um, So agile, it emphasizescross-functional collaboration.

But a lot of organizationswith regard to QA still

move forward with silos.
And when I hear silos,I immediately think
poor communication.
QA is a bottleneck versus like,Hey, y'all got bigger problems.
QA is like the least yourissues and also there's some
things you can do to fix qa.
We already talked aboutshift left, stuff like that.
Sure.
A typical QA team where peopleare saying QA is a bottleneck.

They're working in isolation,they're not communicating
issues early, they're notpointing out things, they're
not involved early, right?
Testing is a handoff.
Testing's a handoff.
And then at that point, whathappens is there is incomplete.
Understanding of the problemthat they're testing for.
Correct?
Yes.
'cause they were never involvedin refinement, perhaps so now
(26:03):
there's this back and forth,they test something the way
they believe it should work,as opposed to how it really
should work as opposed to howit was implemented to work.
Right.
So there's a lot of scope therefor deviation, from the mean and
this happens way too frequently,but then what it leads to
is even worse, which is.
Testing will fail something,and developers are like,
(26:24):
no, it's working fine.
It's implemented, but it's notreally usable in the way it is.
So a long way to say if youhave silos and you have handoff.
You're inherentlyadding latency.
And the latency multipliesat each handoff.
Which is a big problem.
So in this category, likebusiness stakeholders who don't
(26:45):
participate in sprint planningif the right people are not
involved in sprint planning,you now have knowledge gaps.
Okay.
Yeah.
You've got knowledge gaps.
People have to go out andfind that knowledge, bring
it back into the team.
I would think that even, ifI'm gonna be willing to get
shouted down off my high horsehere, I would say well, Brian,
what about modern tools?
Let the product managertalk to the customers and
(27:05):
then Record the interactionand the QA people,
i'm like, yeah, but it's, it's,it's still asynchronous, right?
People don't have opportunitiesto ask for clarifications,
ask questions that's true.
So and, and let's face it, whodoesn't watch recorded videos at
one and a half times the speed?
I mean, come on.
Not me, not me.
I, I go two times, but, but no.
So seriously, right.
(27:27):
That's not a, that'snot a substitute for.
Actual meaningful interaction.
Yeah.
It just isn't, yeah.
Well, the, the categorywe're talking about
now is collaboration.
It's like you'rebringing your QA folks.
You're exerting a goodfaith effort to include
all of your team members.
QA people just happen to beanother one, eight team members.
Like we're we're saying like,well, you're gonna go talk to
(27:48):
the customers, but you're gonnaleave some team members behind.
Well, you're gonna talk to yourdevelopers to come up with an
architecture, but you're gonnaleave some team members behind.
You're gonna talk to executivesabout the, the, the purpose
of certain initiatives or not.
And then you're gonna leavecertain members behind.
Why would you leave thosepeople behind, bring them along
(28:08):
in all those interactions?
And you don't have to sufferfrom this well, they're
the bottleneck at the endbecause they didn't understand
and now they're dragging.
The most difficultthing to do in a modern
organization because.
Again, with the typicalorg structure of a modern
corporation and like, Idon't know how many organ
I, I was gonna say typicallike human organizations.
(28:30):
I don't know if I wanna makethat bold claim, but definitely
, definitely corporations inthis authoritative structure,
this hierarchical waterfalltype pyramid structure.
This pyramid scheme,that's what I'm saying.
The hierarchy with like theCEOs at the top and they
make all the decisions.
They, the dictators at thetop, they make like this
(28:50):
communication pyramid.
Doesn't, it doesn't work thebest for making great decisions.
You know, it does work thebest for giving the person
the top the most control.
But yeah, like I feel likethere's this communication
crisis is sort of likebuilt into the system
of corporate America.
That's, kind of where I'mgoing with this whole category.
it's really part and parcelof the inadequacies of
(29:11):
modern organizational design.
Structural design, right?
Yeah.
In practice, how you see thepoint you were making, how you
see that implemented often isunder the guise of for example,
you'll hear teams do things likethe three amigos refinement.
Sure.
Just the leads are thereand the teams aren't there.
Yeah.
So now the information is passedon to the leads, who then in
(29:32):
turn pass it on to others.
Sure.
But those othersmay have questions.
And the leads may not beable to answer all of them.
Now what happens?
Or they mightmisunderstand something.
Yeah.
And now they're propagatingthe misunderstanding.
They might be junior in theirroles and think that that's
a challenge rather than apeople genuinely confused
and not understanding.
Yeah there's allsorts of issues there.
(29:53):
So it could be a telephone game.
And but the telephone game thetelephone game sounds to me
like it requires a scoring.
Because it sounds likea game, that's what we
gotta do in game zone.
We gotta give them scores.
We do, we do arbitrarily.
So on the telephone gamewhere crystal clear is
on one end and completelygarbled nonsense basically
LLM output is on the other.
(30:15):
What side do you on?
That's what I'm asking.
I I'm on the drops.
Every other word and glitches.

Uh, But at the end of thatold day, that day never ends.
But when the day does end,we're here to create value.

So what's, what's reallyslowing down our value creation?

Ultimately, software developmentexists to create business value.
The question becomes whether QAhelps or hinders the creation
of business value and the speedat which that value is created.
let's dig into thejuiciest topic last.

QA by itself doesn't either.
it's the surrounding processes.

So it's not QAnecessarily, right?
It's the processes.
Now you could, you could havethe same podcast on other roles?

Development, for example.
Does development holdback creation of value?
Do they take too long to deliverthings by, you know taking,
taking longer in the sprint tobuild something and then handing

it over the wall to, to qa?
Now, is it, is thefocus here QA or is the
focus here development?
I think always because QAis at the end of the chain.
They get the roughend of the stick.
Yikes.
But yeah, they should not be.
Labeled as hindering for sure.
They can help if theprocesses let them.

They're not off the chain.

Yeah.
I feel everything you just saidthere's one more, to put it in
the nomenclature of the podcast,there's one more thing in here
that you didn't touch on, whichis QA can conflict with the
lean startup principles, right?
Right.
So they, they're, they'reslowing down experimentation.
They're pushing back againstthe MVP, you know what I mean?
(32:21):
They're, they're, they're kindof questioning or slowing down
our process of finding the MVP.
I say that like these aretypical, like these are things
that typical because like,I don't believe them at all.
I think what good QA peoplecan do is they can put all
your assumptions and listout all your assumptions.
And quite honestly, they cancall out your assumptions and
that might be very uncomfortableto say like, Brian you said
(32:43):
that when we can do X and thenY and then Z. You're assuming we
can do X we can do Y and you'reassuming we can do Z, so or Z.
So we are gonna.
Write tests for, you need totest X against the market.
You need to test Zagainst the market.
We already have evidenceof Y and here's the proof.
(33:04):
Like QA people will be able tohone in on that very quickly.
I have to tell you, likeworking now that my career
is completely pivotedtoward product management.
There are very fewproduct managers.
Let alone business people thatyou work for that appreciate
that kind of pushback to saylike, are you assuming that
that's a thing or do youknow that that's a thing?
(33:27):
Which is funny because thebusiness entrepreneur would very
much appreciate someone withthat attitude that's continually
pressing to remind us, Hey,do we have evidence of this?
So we should put all of ourchips in here, or do we just
think that it's something cooland we're all like, cool man.
It's all like, cool, man.
(33:48):
So they shouldwelcome that, right?
But in reality, what happensquite often is they seem like
they're challenged, right?
Are you challengingmy decision here?
Right?
Right.
You're a QA person.
Just go test somethingi'm telling you this
is what's needed.
And it is almost like a gutreaction to do the opposite.
When you hear a pushbackfrom a QA person, you say,
(34:09):
I've done all of my things.
You just go do this, right?
Same thing happenswith developers.
When developers pushback on assumptions like
that, they're often told.
We've done allour due diligence.
We know what we have to build.
We know why we're doingit, just go build it.
Right, right, right.
Sad but true.
I wanna point out again, likeQA people, regardless of what
random individuals that may ormay not have commented on this
(34:32):
have said there are folks inthe business who can't define
like what value actually means.
And I think the QA people,if, if guided in the right
way, can be really good atseparating assumptions from
evidence and then help yousay this path leads to value
(34:53):
and here's the evidence.
Now you might look at thatevidence and say like, well,
I don't I'm not comfortablewith this evidence.
Like, I don't like it.
I'd like more of this type ofevidence versus that type of
evidence, that kind of stuff.
Which is fine.
Which is fine.
Which is fine.
And, and nobody shouldget Ben outta shape.
Egos definitely could definitelyget bruised when you're like, I
don't like your evidence, ohm.
Like, that's theway people hear it.
Yeah, yeah.
But look, this isprofessionally, this is what
(35:14):
the QA people do, right?
So like when the test failsor whatever, you can't get
bent outta shape when thetest fails or whatever.
You have to go look for evidenceand then go figure out why.
Mm-hmm.
Like if you get bent outtashape with the most minimal
kind of test driven whateverlike you might be in the wrong
career field, like QA might bea little too hardcore for you.
That's what I'm saying, Tom.

I don't know.
I don't know that that couldhave been any name in the world.

Billy Bob or whatever, but Ijust, I just randomly said,
Tom, no, I mean, it could havebeen Dick and Harry as well.

Anyway, like what I'm sayingis measure your complete
value streams from idea tocustomer value realization.
That's what I'm trying to say.
You need ways to dothat along the way.

You need to identify whereactual time is spent and then,
you might be surprised howmany of those actually align
with day-to-day QA activities.
Sure.
Absolutely.
I mean, fundamentally, I thinkall around, if you're not
in QA and you're viewing QAas the bottleneck, you need
to rethink your approach andvalue QA as a very integral and

critical cog in the machine.

QA is not the bottleneck.
They're the canary in the coalmine of your dysfunctional
development process.
Yeah, that's a statement.
I think that's a fairlyaccurate statement myself.
I think every time youblame QA for delays, you are
basically admitting that youdon't understand your own
(36:36):
value chain and value stream.
If your QA team isthe bottleneck, then
congratulations.
Everything else inyour process is working
perfectly, which means you'reprobably lying to yourself.
Exactly.
Successfully lying to yourself.
That should be an OKR.
That's what I'm saying.
Yeah.
Successfully lying.
Yeah, that's right.
OKR met.
So QA is an easy scapegoat.
The, the, the harder thing todo is to analyze your processes.

Your processes, yourprocesses, analyze your
system and fix your system.
Because like the bottlenecksthat are hiding in plain
sight all of your stuffthat I handle as a product
manager in my professionaljob, now that I am well, well
out, like years away fromworking qa, none of these have
changed, is what I'm saying.
Yeah.

It's a big problem.
