Charlie and Tim reunite virtually after their memorable Chicago trip, still buzzing from witnessing Justin Turner's walk-off homer at Wrigley Field. The moment marked Turner's first regular-season walk-off in his 17-year career – proving once again that magic happens when Tim visits Wrigley, now sporting a perfect 2-0 record with Cubs walk-offs.

The baseball discussion dives deep into playoff positioning for both the Mets and Cubs. Despite recent struggles, both hosts maintain cautious optimism about their teams' wild card chances while acknowledging the division-leading Brewers' seemingly unstoppable momentum. The conversation takes an interesting turn as they explore a peculiar friendship dynamic – each rooting for the other's team when they're not facing each other, a rarity in sports fandom. They analyze how Andrew Vaughn transformed from a negative WAR player with the White Sox into a powerhouse for Milwaukee, highlighting the Brewers' uncanny ability to maximize talent other teams have given up on.

Beyond baseball, Charlie shares stories from the National Sports Collectors Convention, including a surprisingly warm interaction with Sammy Sosa and securing valuable autographs from current Cubs players. Their conversation about collectibles reveals how memorabilia connects to deeper emotional experiences, with Charlie looking forward to sharing these traditions with his son Dylan someday. The hosts also dissect the current Big Brother season with tactical precision, questioning why HOH winners repeatedly make strategic blunders and challenging the show's controversial rule allowing an HOH win to be stolen without providing immunity to the original winner.

From their detailed breakdown of the Destination X finale to previews of upcoming entertainment including Wednesday's second season, Survivor 49, and the new Fantastic Four movie, Charlie and Tim demonstrate why Around the Bases has become essential listening for fans of both sports and pop culture. Their authentic friendship and engaging banter create a listening experience that feels like joining old friends for a conversation where everyone's invited.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Around the Bases, the podculture and
sports podcast, with your host, charlie Seymour, and I'm Tim
Sternberg.
Hit it, nick.
All right, we're back here weare.

(00:28):
We're not in person anymore, buddy, but I had an awesome time
with Erica traveling to Chicagoto see the wonderful Dylan.
You and Rosie are great too,but we met the wonderful Dylan.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
We can be second and third Phil to Dylan, that's okay
, what?

Speaker 1 (00:47):
what a special time, bro.
Uh, so good to see your littleguy meet your little guy and uh
go to a cubs game and watcharguably one of the best games
of the year, in my opinion.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Maybe that was a lot of fun, a lot of it's always
nice when you get to see awalk-off homer bottom nine.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
We saw a walk-off homer bottom nine by the great
former Met Justin Turner, whohit that home run first at bat
First, like he just got up tothe plate and went.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
First pitch yeah, First pitch who in his 17-year
career, that was his firstregular season career walk-off
homer, if you can believe that.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
Around the Basin is bringing you history right here
on this podcast.
I would be remiss real quick, buddy, if I didn't mention too
that our great pal NicholasPepin from Pop Culture Roulette
came out to see us and drove allthe way from wisconsin an hour
and a half to go to the cub gamewith us.

(01:51):
Nicholas pepin, thank you onbehalf of both charlie and I for
hanging out with us.
You see this great picture herethat we took, uh, at wrigley
field after the cubs had thatvictorious victory.
Um.
But yeah, charlie and I bothappreciate it so much, buddy,
and it was so great to see you.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
That marks almost to the day Not quite the day, but
the time you and you and Ericacame the year before the Cubs
also walked off the Cardinalsbottom nine.
It wasn't a homer, it was awalk-off base hit.
But just for those keepingscore, Tim is 2-0 at Wrigley
with two Cubs walk-off base hit.
But just for those keepingscore, Tim is 2-0 at Wrigley
with two Cub walk-offs.
So we might need to ship him inif we are lucky enough to get a

(02:31):
game in October.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
I'm ready, willing and able, bring me in.
No problem, Cubbies, I got you,as long as we're not playing
the Mets.
You know the deal, but I willroot for them.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
Still repping the Mets, I love it.
Yeah, yeah, that's growth.
I love it.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
Dude, I mean, they're my team and you know what.
We had an amazing start of theyear and we're in a really
crappy, crappy, crappy, crappylosing streak.
But, as Steve Cohen saideloquently today, he still has
faith, and I still have faith inthe team.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
And let's be honest right now I don't know if the
1927 Yankees can beat theBrewers, because they cannot
lose.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Yeah, but the problem is, charlie, for both of us, my
friend, is that one of us needsto beat them against the World
Series, for sure.

Speaker 2 (03:27):
I know, I know, and right now they're looking like
world beaters.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
Dude, I can't see the .
I cannot see the Brewers in theWorld Series, bro.
I just I can't.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Let's hope history repeats itself.
They've had some early Octoberexits recently.
Yeah, you know every year isdifferent.
They are very good and we haverecords.
You can go back early in thisseason, Even when the Brewers
were in third.
I've been telling people I wasmore afraid of them than the
Cardinals and I think that'sbeen very proven right.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
Yeah, I recall you saying that a number of times
and I understand.
I mean, I don't know whatthey're doing.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
I recall you saying that a number of times and I
understand it's just there.
I mean they, they, they.
I don't know what they're doing, but just like.
Here's a perfect example.
Okay, the poor white Sox havethis player named Andrew Vaughn,
number three pick in the draft.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
I know.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
For five seasons.
He's basically a negative warplayer.
Then they brewers, have apitcher who says you know what?
I want to start?
I don't want to be a part ofthis team, even if you guys are
good, I just want to be astarting pitcher.
My spot's gone.
So they say, all right, well,we'll trade you.
Then, oh well, the white sockshave this really, really former
top prospect who's available, who we're getting for one cent
on the dollar.
And then, what do you know?

Speaker 1 (04:43):
a little little change of scenery and Andrew
Vaughn is now basically ShoheiOtani at the plate which I'm
very happy about, not for thebrewers, but the fact that I
have a rookie card of his that Inever sold.
That's numbered to 25 and it'sautographed.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
So find a brewer fan right now who wants that, while
you still can, Reese Hoskinscould be back in a week.
Someone's going to have to sit.
I mean Vaughn's too hot to sit,but between Hoskins and Churio
coming back it'll actually beinteresting.
Who is he going to sit rightnow?
Because all these fill-in guyshave been great.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
You know how I feel about Reese Hoskins.
I do know how you feel aboutReese Hoskins.
Don't like Reese Hoskins, former Philly yeah, you know
just his attitude.
I just done that.
But yeah, it should beinteresting to see what happens
with Vaughn.
I mean, what depth though, tohave that kind of guy as your
backup all of a sudden, becauseyour pitcher didn't want to stay

(05:38):
with the team, not to mentionone of the outfielders who's
been playing great is going tohave to start sitting.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
So mentioned, one of the outfielders who's been
playing great is going to haveto start sitting.
So you have the the not tobring up a specific game against
the Mets, but the game I thinkit was the middle game of the
series where the Mets seeminglytied it in the ninth and Perkins
made an unbelievably perfectthrow to get him by a split
second.
So between Perkins, yelich andCollins, who could be the NL
rookie of the year, that's threeoff-fielders right there.
You got Churrio back.
Who are you going to sit there?
So, like they've got someinteresting some we'll call them

(06:12):
first-world problems coming up.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
Aye, aye, aye, all right.
Well, the Mets and the Cubs inthe home stretch, we still got
the wild card.
I don't want to see the Metsand the Cubs face each other in
the wild card.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
One of us has to win a division, I don't know or one
of us has to finish four.
Basically they'd have to finishfour and six to not play the
first round, which is exactlyhow it would be right now if it
ended.
Today, the Mets would beplaying Division III winner,
which is is it the Philliesright now, or was it the Dodgers

(06:48):
?
They're neck and neck.
They keep trading spots.
So I mean, you probably don'twant so many teams around me.
I can't stand.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
So many.
At least the Braves are out ofit.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Right.
So the interesting thing is,the Padres have been playing
some good ball lately too.
They're only two behind theDodgers.
Now what if the Dodgers end upin the wild card?
If the wild card ends up beingthe Cubs, dodgers and Mets, can
you imagine that would be wild.
Let's go the Dodgers, and thenin that scenario, we'd be hoping
that the Dodgers were five.

(07:21):
So then we don't play eachother again the Dodgers were
five.

Speaker 1 (07:26):
So then we don't play each other again.
I'm gonna say this right nowright now, I'll say this if
either the Mets, or, hopefully,if either the Mets or the Cubs
get to the NLCS, I will root foreither one of them, as long as
they're not playing each other, without a doubt oh, absolutely.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
I think I'm rooting for the Cubs and the Mets,
regardless of what round, aslong as they're not playing each
other.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
We have to put that little.
Obviously, obviously you're notgoing to root for the.

Speaker 2 (07:50):
Cubs against the Mets and I'm not going to root for
the Mets against the Cubs.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
We can be real about that.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Aside from that, yeah , yeah, right now, if, if the
season were to end this second, the Mets would be playing in la
in the wild card and the clubwould be hosting the padres in
chicago.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
But that there's still 40 games, 40 something
games left, so a lot can changeyeah, we're today is august 12th
, yeah, as we record thisepisode, so probably august 13th
when it comes out.
Yeah, I mean, I mean it's earlyin the season.
I mean early midseason.
I should say Not early in theseason, early midseason.

(08:31):
We're a month away out from theAll-Star game.
We are getting into the stretchof time where stuff has to
start happening Mets, hello,hello, mcfly.
But yeah, hopefully, hopefullythey do something.
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
Yeah, I still.
I still do have confidence inthem.
I think they still are, I thinkI mean I don't want to jinx
anything, but I have a feelingthat the current six will be the
six that get in.
Okay, here's an interesting.
See, be the six that get in.
Okay, here's an interesting.
So here's an interesting spotfor you.
So yesterday was an example.
Mets were off, cubs were off, okay, so you had some scoreboard

(09:11):
watching to do.
Now the Phillies, who are thecurrent east leaders, who
obviously you don't like, butwith the recent stretch of them
playing well in the Metsstruggling a that leads up to
five.
It was five and a half going onsix.
Now, granted, you don't want tosay I don't want to go for the

(09:32):
division, but at the same timeyou know better than anybody.
I mean, all you have to do isget into the playoffs and then
anything can happen.
So you obviously would rathertake a wild card than nothing.
So game was a perfect example.
Sure, the Phillies won, metslost half a game, but they beat
the Reds, who are the first teamon the outside looking in, who

(09:54):
both the Cubs and Mets want tokeep losing to guarantee a
playoff spot.
So when you have things likethat, like here's another you
got today and tomorrow two moregames.
Do you want the Phillies tolose both games?
And then pressures on the Metsto keep it?
Honestly, at this point, as theyI'm in the Cubs are in a
similar spot, with the Brewersplaying like a crazy good, it's

(10:14):
going to be very difficult tocatch Milwaukee.
The Cubs play five timesagainst Milwaukee next week at
Wrigley.
Unless they swept all five, even four out of five, you're
only gaining three games.
You're still going to be three, three and a half back.
It'll be tough.
So I think, as a cub fan and asa met fan, we might be rooting
for the phillies the next twodays to give the reds two more

(10:34):
losses and keep fortifying ourchances to get in, which, at
this point, is the goal, I thinkyou're not wrong.

Speaker 1 (10:42):
I mean arguably too.
Thinking about it, historicallyspeaking, the buy isn't always
necessarily the best thing tohave in the playoffs.
As we see, the rest kind ofdoes some funky things to the
team.
Case in point last lastplayoffs with the Mets.
And you know, I mean I have Ihave mixed feelings about it.

(11:02):
I think as a team you need todo something to kind of fight
that by like maybe not have therest but maybe do like practice
games or whatnot.
But I don't know.
You're right, though, to yourpoint, I'd rather be in a wild
card than not be in at all, obviously.

Speaker 2 (11:17):
So you know there's a lot of baseball left to play
and just looking ahead, the Metsstill have seven games left
with the Phillies.
So theoretically, if thePhillies help the cause and beat
the Reds a couple of times, theMets could still like the Cubs.
Because only a five, let's say,the Mets go six and one in
those seven, all of a suddenthey're right back in the

(11:39):
division race.
So you know you.
You don't want to say oh yeah, they're going to do that.
Obviously, both teams are verygood and you can go three, four,
four, three.
But at this point I thinkgetting in is number one most
important, especially with howsome of these teams are playing
and how our teams are playingright now.
Every team goes through thesestretches, but it magnifies when

(12:03):
all of a sudden you see acouple other.
Their teams kind of creep in andyou've had a few years where
teams like Arizona, who was wayout of it and then all of a
sudden got really hot, got awild card, went all the way to
the World Series.
So, like you, just got to behot at the right time.
And I think a silver lining forboth Mets fans and Cub fans is

(12:23):
we're not playing our best ball, sure, but you'd rather that
right now than September leadinginto October.
So you know, maybe the tideswill turn, maybe somehow the
Mets and Cubs will start playingbetter again and teams like the
Brewers might actually lose agame, one single game maybe well
to.

Speaker 1 (12:43):
I mean, the Phillies can be very streaky.
The Phillies are known to losea bunch of games in a row, so
anything can happen between nowand the end of September.
So yeah, that's kind of the wayI look at it.

Speaker 2 (12:58):
Yeah, it should honestly be a pretty fun month
and a half of baseball.
There's like pretty much onlyseven teams total that are
totally out of it, like justeven looking at the wild card
standings like you?
What about the?
Rocky you mentioned the braves.
Yeah, they're, they'reobviously out rockies are out.
White socks are out, like thoseobvious teams are out.

Speaker 1 (13:19):
But the marlins, I mean the marlins out.
I think the marlins Are theMarlins out.
I think the Marlins Are theMarlins out.
No, actually.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
I don't know If we would have recorded this before
the weekend.
We would probably say they'reright in it.
Now.
They kind of slipped a littlebit and lost a few more in a row
but they're six back.

Speaker 1 (13:38):
Can I clarify that though?
They slipped a little bitbecause they're actually playing
decent teams.

Speaker 2 (13:45):
Yeah, yeah.
They just lose three in a row,but right before that day they
were right in the hunt there.

Speaker 1 (13:51):
I don't know, fingers crossed.

Speaker 2 (13:55):
The team that swept them was the Braves.

Speaker 1 (13:58):
They're not decent this year.
Yeah, this trip, by the way,not the only thing we did was go
to Wrigley.
You went to the National forthe First time in a long time.

Speaker 2 (14:11):
I'll say I say the first time Of the actual
National, because I believe theother ones I went to were the
Chicago Sport ones, so not quitethe same.
But yeah, I gotta say I wasBlown away, wasn't that
something?
It was wild, I mean.

Speaker 1 (14:27):
Lots of human beings at one place.

Speaker 2 (14:30):
The first day getting in there were so many people
waiting in line I thought Ididn't know what was going on.

Speaker 1 (14:39):
So, charlie, folks, charlie picked Erica and I up at
our hotel and we're driving in.
He goes.
What's with the traffic?
I can't believe the traffic andthat's the whole time, because
it's crazy around Rosemont whereit was held, and I, for the
first time ever, never saw thatline outside, like you just
mentioned.
I could not believe it.
And the second day we went whenwe weren't with you and we got

(15:01):
dropped off by an uber.
We had to go outside andapparently the the trick is to
go to the parking lot and gothrough the inside walkway.
Yeah, yeah, um, but unbelievable.
You were having a ball gettingautographs of cubs players
because the cubs had an off daythat day.

Speaker 2 (15:19):
Uh, you want to mention a couple of the ones I
mean the one, the most importantone for nostalgia purposes, was
sammy I mean that was cool.
Sammy sosa was incredibly niceand you got a selfie, which I
politely asked, knowing you knowprobably not, and the security
or whoever was working at theconvention said no, no photos,

(15:41):
and Sammy laughed at him andgave me the wave and brought me
around the table, so that feltpretty good.

Speaker 1 (15:47):
I love Sammy so much.
Man.
That's awesome.
You got PCA right, or did younot?
I actually had a running at PCA.

Speaker 2 (15:56):
Yeah, I already had PCA.
Actually, I got him at the sametime as Matt Mervis before last
year's Cubs convention.
They did obvious shirts, had alittle meet and greet with them,
miami Marlins had a little meetand greet with them and that
was before people really knewyeah exactly so I had met him.

(16:16):
Um, the ones who were there atthe convention that day that I
went to were uh, cubs rookiematt shaw, who is carrying the
offense right now the only onehitting right now, really and
then there was also uh, nicokyle tucker and uh, who is the
other, and michael bush so talktucker was obviously the biggest

(16:37):
one.

Speaker 1 (16:38):
You got that day for sure.
Current player.
Yeah, definitely which isimportant because we want tucker
to re-sign with the cubs.

Speaker 2 (16:45):
but just in case you have an autograph with him on a
cubs, I may I may have have saidsome encouraging words about
him wanting to stay, and then Ialso may have told all of the
other Cubs to tell Kyle Tuckerto stay, and Nico had the best
response of all of them.
Nico said I think Chicago is apretty good sell of itself,

(17:05):
don't you think?

Speaker 1 (17:07):
I think he, I think that means he's enjoying his
time.

Speaker 2 (17:09):
Obviously, a lot can happen, and Cubs have never
really gone to that length, butwe'll see.
We'll see.

Speaker 1 (17:15):
Yeah, so to cap off that awesome day because the day
was already awesome the daybefore I had texted you and I
said we need to enter this Topsthing for a Q&A- and without
hesitation, because you know meRight, you quickly entered it.

Speaker 2 (17:33):
I mean, if tim is sending me something to sign up
for, I'm doing it.
And this is the king ofsweepstakes and raffles over
here so here is the dude like.

Speaker 1 (17:40):
So the dude's online getting autographs and he texts
me because we're at another partof the convention, because I
didn't get an email.
I guess we're not doing it.
I guess, I guess, I guess soand literally like two minutes
later I get an email go through.
I call him Joey, check youremail and all three of us got
invited to this Pops Q&Ahappening.
Like a half hour later you gotyour autograph.

(18:03):
We rushed over there, lined up,had an amazing interaction.
I always love these because youget really good information and
we get a gift at the end ericawins a box of uh erica won a
raffle within a raffle yeswithin the family and at the end
we all get an autographed uhroki sasaki dodgers rookie

(18:27):
autograph card to 50 number to50 national unbelievable I would
show you mine, but I already.
But um, just it was, it wasawesome, it was just fun time it
was.

Speaker 2 (18:40):
It was very cool and, and uh, bearing the lead.
Basically the three people whoran the q a were basically three
of the top people at topsyou're the head of distribution,
the head of design and I forgetthe third one, but literally
all three of them were had bighonchos there I think this
experience got you uh backinterested in it a little bit,

(19:04):
because you went ahead andbought some cards off of the
website and you're actuallyexpecting the the one of the
ones that you like tops chromesometime today so yeah, it's
it's?
it brings you back like thenostalgia for sure, and uh, oh,
yeah.
And then randomly the other dayI just was like I was running

(19:26):
at target.
They had some there so I pickedsome up and in the one little
box I picked up I had a numberto 50 sandy kofax.

Speaker 1 (19:32):
So that was beautiful card yeah, I, I mentioned, you
know you just mentionednostalgia.
I just recently like withinright before the national
started going through my comicbooks.
I have an extensive comic bookcollection and I started
submitting them for grading andI actually did a video today on
amazing spider-man 252 and ifyou're not familiar with that
issue, it's the one wherespider-man gets his black

(19:54):
costume from secret wars.
It's the first time in theseries that it shows it.
And you know, superheroeshelped me get out of a funk as
far as being bullied in schooland whatnot, and there's
something about collectibles ingeneral that I'm sure you'll
agree with that.
Just bring that smile to yourface and bring that nostalgia
back and just make you happy fortimes that have passed, but

(20:16):
times that are current too, andI can't wait until you start.
You know ripping cards withDylan or you know collecting
baubles with Dylan, and that'sthe fun part yeah, looking
forward to it honestly yeah, definitely, and going, of course
, going to Wrigley into many, many pub, many pub games.

Speaker 2 (20:32):
It'll be nice because you know whatever he wants to
do is fine.
But if he is interested in that, can start going early again
for autographs, like actuallylike I used to when I was a kid.

Speaker 1 (20:44):
With you.
As a dad, I have a feeling he'sgoing to want to do that.

Speaker 2 (20:49):
We'll see, we'll see.
We'll see what he wants to do.

Speaker 1 (20:52):
I love that.
I love that you're saying thatabsolutely whatever he wants to
do.
Um, so we do talk other thingsother than baseball and national
and all this stuff.
And, uh, there's some realitytv going on.
There is a little show calledbig brother happening currently.
Um, well, uh, I I think we'rein the minority, charlie in

(21:16):
happy to see jimmy gone, apparently because a lot of
people love jimmy and, I guess, because he was the chaos causer,
and interesting.

Speaker 2 (21:24):
I guess it's the circles you keep.
But yeah, I would feel likemost of the people that I know
and talk to about big brotherare also pretty happy that he's
gone uh, yeah, most, I mean II'd rather keep to your circle
because I agree with you.

Speaker 1 (21:38):
Um, you know I they like the chaos causing aspects
of him.
I guess some people called hima king, oh, okay, uh, if
bullying is king, I guess.
Um, he literally targeted Keanuweek one, told him to sit down,
basically made a lot of thiscountry.
Team Keanu If you saw theirbrother on lock the other night

(22:00):
with Jerry O'Connell wearing ateam Keanu shirt there's a
reason for that Because he wasbeing ostracized most famously
in the last week's episode bythe current head of household,
ava, who is hosting the vetocompetition, and he says I
believe you have a prompt.

Speaker 2 (22:20):
What do you mean?
Let's hold on, let's prefacethat with.
He said that after he won theveto and not a single person
said a word to congratulate him.

Speaker 1 (22:33):
That was not I would I?

Speaker 2 (22:34):
honestly I went full 180 and I was already getting
there, but I'm totally rootingfor kiana whenever everyone's
gaining on one person.
I'm starting to root for thatperson same.

Speaker 1 (22:45):
I mean, I'm not dude.
I usually I will tell youstraight up when, when I watch
reality TV, I'm usually rootingfor the nerdy kind of guy
because that's who I am.
So I am like rooting for thatteam that you know quiet guy, I
like rooting for that guy.

Speaker 2 (23:02):
Do they have one of those on this season?
No, I feel like yeah, right, this is one of the one times
that they don't.

Speaker 1 (23:12):
Yeah know, I feel like, yeah right, this is one of
the one times that they yeah,so normally a player like uh, a
player like kianu, I'm liketotally like get him out, get
him out, get him out, get himout, get the strong guy out no
dude.

Speaker 2 (23:22):
Early in the season we were like that.
We were pro, but whenever theyall started ganging up on him,
no, and I'm the same way withkelly now too, me too.

Speaker 1 (23:33):
Yes, I love kelly like I.

Speaker 2 (23:35):
Just here's the.
Here's my big thing.
I know I've mentioned this toyou before, but I don't
understand all of these peoplewho, when they become hoh, they
keep shooting themselves in thefoot for no reason.
You don't you don't have tomake promises and you can't make
promises to everyone.
So, instead of saying, oh,don't worry, you're not going on

(23:57):
the block, how about somethinglike you know, I really don't
want to put you on the block, Ican't make any promises, but I
don't want to do that.
It's that easy.
It's that easy.

Speaker 1 (24:06):
It's a non-clarifying statement.
You don't have to.
You don't have to put yourwhole game out there and after
that week you're not going to beat a household anymore, at
least in the next week.
What are you doing, right?
What are you doing?
You got it.
You can't.
I mean, I don't know.
Especially this season, theburning of bridges is
unbelievable and as much as Idon't like what's his name,

(24:32):
jimmy, as much as I didn't likeJimmy, mickey made a bad move,
bro.
I'm sorry.
He was a number for her.
She should not have gotten ridof him.
She went from being someone whoI thought could possibly win
this game, like was playing agreat game socially, to totally
tanking her game, man.

(24:52):
That wasn't the move.

Speaker 2 (24:55):
I would say that was one of the worst HOHs ever, but
it wasn't Jimmy's.

Speaker 1 (24:58):
But it wasn't her HOH .
Really, If you think about it,she really kind of wanted to do
the power that's another thing Iwanted to talk about.

Speaker 2 (25:05):
I didn't like that, by the way.
There needs to be somethingwhere, regardless of her being
able to steal the HOH, fine, butRiley, who won that HOH, should
not be eligible to go on theblock when he won HOH.
What is that?

Speaker 1 (25:23):
So what does that mean?
To win the HOH?
He didn't get the letter, hedidn't get the room, he didn't
get protection and he ends up onthe block, having to win the
blockbuster in order to get offthe block.
That's unfair, and I say unfairin a gameplay rule kind of way
where they messed up.
The producer should not havedone that.

Speaker 2 (25:42):
I'm sorry.
That needs to be fixed infuture years.
They can be stolen, sure, buthe needs to be immune.
The winner needs to be immune.

Speaker 1 (25:49):
There has to to be something.
Some benefit from winning thehoh, because what's the point of
even having that competition?
I understand the power, butwhat was the point?
And mind you and I'm sayingthis, I don't know how you are
I'm not a huge fan of riley atall, like I'm not a big fan of
his at all, but I think, from agame perspective, I I don't
think it was fair on their part.

Speaker 2 (26:10):
Agreed and you know, you know, they all their, their
whole main purpose is to be asfair as possible.

Speaker 1 (26:15):
They certainly were not there I mean, I, I don't
think so either, and I will say, though, mickey made a smart
move.
The way she did it wasbeautiful.
The way she stole his hoh wasperfect.
Uh, the way that everyone madehim think that it was ashley, um
, and he called out ashley, which was when it happened I was
laughing my ass off.

Speaker 2 (26:36):
To be honest with you , um, yeah, even though he's so
convinced, did try to tell himthat it was mickey yeah, how do
you not?
Use the information that it waswhoever was one of the first.
Maybe it was morgan who said it, but he told him.
Basically, the other personfound her and helped her look
for something, so clearly shefound it.

Speaker 1 (26:56):
I don't know, man that's so crazy and then.
So then we get ava, crazy, avabecoming head of household.
Uh, she puts up, uh, threepeople for she puts up our boy
again, keanu Keanu.
She puts up, interestingly, zach Zach is the interesting one

(27:18):
.
I could not believe she put upZach.

Speaker 2 (27:20):
After she told Zach he was good.
Why do?

Speaker 1 (27:25):
you keep doing that, dude.
You finally see Zach with somefire, though Zach was like she
promised me.
She I mean, I don't know wherehis game has been um, he's been
kind of running in the coattail, but she puts up zach, she puts
up, uh, kianu, and then she putsup um, also uh, was it kelly

(27:46):
again?
Vince, oh vince, that's rightvince the move this week, dude,
is to get Vince out.
In my opinion, if you can getVince out, that's the move.

Speaker 2 (27:56):
Yeah, he realized last week he was playing the
middle too much and kind of drewa line in the sand when he the
wrong line, Rachel and.
Ashley yeah.

Speaker 1 (28:06):
Oh boy, but I, I, if, if he doesn't win the veto,
he's out, or he doesn't win theblockbuster.
I think he doesn't win the veto, he's out.
Or he doesn't win theblockbuster, I think he's out.
I don't think the move is toget rid of Keanu right now, even
though he keeps winning, because I think, ultimately,
first of all, everyone dislikesand he's not going to win the

(28:27):
ultimate vote.
I don't think, and or maybe hewill, but I just I think he's a
good one to string along alittle bit the string along a
little bit.

Speaker 2 (28:34):
I think jury-wise is that predictable.
Additionally, I think therepeople are ever since we'll say,
the last two or three seasonsthat they've added the
blockbuster in the third person.
I think h hohs are not playingit correct at all, and here's
why.
Here's my little, my littlething on why and using you know
me, I like numbers and math.
Okay, so last few weeks, everybody wants Keanu out.

(28:55):
Okay, if you put Keanu up rightaway, first of all, he gets an
extra chance to pull himself off.
One, okay, two, let's play alittle math here.
Okay, you have three peoplenominated for eviction, okay,
one, two, three that's sixpeople play for for eviction?
Okay, one, two, three that'ssix people play in the veto,
correct?

(29:15):
Okay, so that's, if any one ofthe three win, they're pulling
themselves off.
You agree, we'll say majorityof the time, just for, obviously
, riley maybe would have keptthem the same to save Catherine,
but that's a rare instance.
Okay, so that's three.
The HOH plays themselves.
That's four.

(29:36):
You're now up to a 67% chanceof winning the veto.
Okay, then the other two picks.
If one of the two, one of thethree people who are up win,
they're picking someone who'sgoing to pull themselves off.
If the winner of the hoh, whoalso plays, wins, they have the

(29:57):
power to pull someone off.
So why would you put yourtarget up right away when
there's a much better chancethey're going to come down
anyways?
You've done not many morepeople.
Wait until the veto, then putyour target up, is it?
I don't understand why no oneis doing this.

Speaker 1 (30:14):
Well, they mentioned that.
Possibly the reason why they'renot doing it is because they
have the blockbuster now, so thebackdoor becomes something a
little different.
But I agree with you 100% youhave to at least eliminate, as
you say with odds, at least oneof the competitions they have a
chance to win in order to getthem out.

Speaker 2 (30:35):
And a good player like Keanu.
You're going to give him twochances in a one in six and then
a one in three, mind you dudeRight.

Speaker 1 (30:42):
So he's the last couple of vetoes, he's one.
As we talk about a survivor, often he's building that resume
of wins and how can you?
You can't like yeah, it is whatit is, you can't dude what I
don't get it.

Speaker 2 (31:00):
I I think.
I think big future players aregoing to need to reanalyze.
As long as there's the threepeople up, it's totally
different, and you get weekslike where jimmy, all three of
his nominees, don't even go,aren't even voted on in the end
and he ends up putting up fivepeople like he messed with.

Speaker 1 (31:18):
Hoh was a mess, like a total mess.

Speaker 2 (31:24):
Yeah, I think they need to reexamine their strategy
a lot a lot.

Speaker 1 (31:35):
I, I think, so I, I don't know.
I wouldn't call this season'scast the most strategic thinkers
on the planet.
Let's just um let's just saythat, um, but yeah, so we'll see
how it goes.
I just, you know, I I oftenwatch these reality shows and go
, I can play it so much better.
I'm like what the?

Speaker 2 (31:52):
heck.
I mean, it's always easier athome, not under the lights and
stuff, but the big brother's alittle different Cause I feel
like you're living in that housenow.
I mean, how many weeks?

Speaker 1 (32:02):
are we on already?
Yeah, we're.
So we're over a month in likeright.
So by this, point.

Speaker 2 (32:09):
They've got to be used to this like there's no, I
was nervous and I made a mistakein the first game.

Speaker 1 (32:14):
Excuse anymore, we're over a month in so oh, boy,
speaking of, uh, conclusions ofreality shows, one that we were
both watching, that we haven'ttalked about yet, since the last
broadcast was destination s onnbc.
Yes, oh, what a finale it was.
First of all, I thought, uh,you had the final three, which

(32:37):
was rick zibo, who's a birdwatcher, and better love rick.
Uh, we have peter weber, ofcourse.
The bachelor, of course, traders, uh also.
And we had biggie bailey, biggie the sports, the, the
quick guy.
I call him the quick guy healways has a thing, dadgummit.

(32:58):
What's going on?
I'm like this dude gives thebest confessionals I see on
reality tv.

Speaker 2 (33:05):
I mean, he was just oh he's a walking billboard for
a Southern accent.

Speaker 1 (33:10):
He's a walking like quit.
He's like that's too short.
I don't know where he has thislibrary of sayings in his head,
but he just is unbelievable.
He has a huge following onsocial media, so I can kind of
see why.
Definitely so the finale had.
First of all, we start thefinale.
We're in this hall of paintingsof everyone who's been

(33:33):
eliminated and they're playing agame based on destinations
where they choose placement, andit's clear that Rick is
targeting Biggie.
He wants Biggie out.
He doesn't want Biggie in thefinal two, so they have to get
one more person and then get tothe final two.
So they're playing this gamealong and both Rick keeps

(33:55):
pushing Biggie back, biggie'spushing Peter back.
Peter is getting a lot ofquestions wrong.
I don't know what's happeningwith Peter and it ends up at
Biggie, piggy, piggy, biggie andPeter.
I end up all the way in theback, as far back as I can go.
There's one final question andthere's a tiebreaker, and who

(34:17):
wins the tiebreaker?
Peter by one mile, one islandOne island, so the question had
to do with how many islands areon Venice, and by one island he
misses the answer and you couldsee Biggie in the conventional
and it's like he's all thatexcited in the wrong way.

(34:40):
I'm sorry, biggie.
So the final two is Rick thebirdwatcher, and Peter the pilot
, and they have to follow aseries of clues throughout
london which was very cool, since I had just been there in
the fall.

Speaker 2 (34:57):
So that was cool to see all the place.
Like half the places they weregoing to we went to.

Speaker 1 (35:01):
So and I've been there too myself, and I, I love,
love it.
The tower london's one of myfavorite spots to go.

Speaker 2 (35:07):
Yeah, that was very cool.

Speaker 1 (35:11):
So it's raining, of course, with London right, and
they're going through the cluesand they get to the final clue
where they have to figure outwhere Destination X is.
Where does Peter say it is?

Speaker 2 (35:22):
I think Peter goes to Tower of London, tower of.

Speaker 1 (35:24):
London, yes, the Tower of London where the doves
fall, and, if you know anythingabout my game show background,
the dude who goes out rightbefore I get in the hot seat.
There's a question about theTower of London, which is crazy
and I've been there and Rickgoes to Big Ben.
One of them is correct.

(35:45):
Who is correct?
You ask?

Speaker 2 (35:56):
Rick.
Rick is a winner.
Of course, before that goes tocommercial too, they make it
seem like rick is doubtinghimself and has it wrong, which
right away I'm like okay, sorick won a very emotional win I
found.

Speaker 1 (36:03):
I I kind of felt for him.
He played.
I had a good feeling about himfrom the way beginning of the
season.

Speaker 2 (36:12):
I would love to see him on Traders.

Speaker 1 (36:14):
Me too.
Me too, I think he would be.
I would love to see Biggie onTraders too, actually.

Speaker 2 (36:19):
Yeah, honestly.

Speaker 1 (36:21):
But yeah, I would like to see that.
He played a great game, won$250,000.
Nothing to sneeze at whatsoever, um, and hopefully mbc has not
renewed destination x, but Ihope they do.
It kind of gives me a mix ofamazing race and survivor and
has that social game big brother, but it also is amazing race.

(36:41):
But they're on this bus andwhat did you feel overall?
How did you feel about?

Speaker 2 (36:46):
as I mentioned before , I think that it grew on me a
lot.
I wasn't so sure about it thefirst couple episodes, and then
I really liked it by the end, honestly.
Yeah, me too, and then I alsoliked how, at the end, after he
won, they went back into all ofthe previous episodes where he
was giving hints at the actualanswer.

Speaker 1 (37:06):
That was crazy to me.
I love that.
It shows you.
If you're going to play inseason two, you got to pay
closer attention to the cluesthat are being given to you for
sure.
So yeah, destination X.
I'm looking forward to it.
Speaking of looking forward tosome shows, the Floor just
announced their theme for seasonthree is going to be about the

(37:27):
states the states battling eachother, so that should be
interesting.

Speaker 2 (37:31):
And our speculation was they'd have two people from
each state or something likethat.

Speaker 1 (37:36):
Like the senators.
Yeah, senator representationAlso.
So the floor is two people.
Well, possibly two people fromevery state.
99 beat is 99 to beat, I thinkit's called, or yeah something
like that fox coming up.
A bunch of reality stars onthat show, including some big

(38:00):
brother alumni.
Um, that should be interestingI didn't realize that.

Speaker 2 (38:04):
I thought that was all regular people no, no, there
was some reality.
Good to know that's beinghosted interestingly by Ken
Jeong and Aaron Andrews.

Speaker 1 (38:15):
Yes, interesting combination.
Aaron Andrews, of course, former sports reporter, but also
she co-hosted Dancing with theStars Ken, we know from
everything, practically Joel'ssidekick, joel.
And speaking of Joel 1% Club, you mentioned that the latest
episode had what?

Speaker 2 (38:33):
had a the jeopardy tournament of champions
semi-finalist who I saw, thoughI was like that guy looks
familiar to me, but I didn'tactually know him, whereas I
feel like you would probablyrecognize him right away.

Speaker 1 (38:44):
Uh yes, I, I don't know who it is.
I mean, I haven't watched thethat episode yet, um, but yeah,
I didn't want to spoil it.
It's okay, it's all right, it'snot a it's not a huge deal, um,
but um, I'll watch it tonightfor sure, um, anything else out
there that we are watching umwell, I don't know if you guys

(39:06):
watch it, but the first half ofthe second season of wednesday I
haven't seen season one yet, sowhat do you think so far of
wednesday this season?

Speaker 2 (39:16):
it's good, I like it.
Um, I don't love that they putout four episodes and then
there's a three or four weeksbetween the second four.
So I would say, wait a littlelonger before you start so you
don't have a long wait to watchthe whole thing.
But I think like maybe earlySeptember 3rd or the 6th,
something like that is when theyrelease the rest of it.
So maybe we'll give it anotherweek or so before you start.

(39:37):
But it's good you mentioned.

Speaker 1 (39:40):
There's cameos in there or something.

Speaker 2 (39:41):
There's people that there are some people in there
that you'll be interested to see.
They're obviously fredarmisen's in it, you know from
season one, but they've had someinteresting ones in the season.
There's, uh, christopher lloyd, who is way up your alley top
brown.
Christopher lloyd has a, has apart in it.
Um, steve buscemi has a part init.

(40:02):
Nice.
Um.
Thaddey newton is in it.
Um it Christina Ricci.
So there are some interestingnames who pop in in the second
season.

Speaker 1 (40:11):
Christina Ricci, of course, is famous in the Tim
Burton universe in films andwhat not.
I can't wait to watch it.
Speaking of you waiting towatch stuff, I had told you the
new Fantastic Four movie.
Without spoiling anything, it'sfan freaking tastic.

(40:32):
I love that film pun intendedpun intended.
Um, I saw superman.
Our buddy mike, who we're gonnahave hopefully soon on the
podcast, uh, made a cameo, Ithink.
I don't know.
You've seen the movie right?

Speaker 2 (40:48):
no, the one thing I'm behind is movies in theaters,
and I'm really behind on that Ithink I see mike's back in the
film, if I'm not mistaken.

Speaker 1 (40:58):
Uh, that's also a good movie it's pretty
recognizable, so I believe it amarvel particular, but I like
the fantastic four slightly morethan Superman and the other
movie I saw which was right upboth of our islands is Naked Gun
.

Speaker 2 (41:14):
So funny dude.
I'm dying to see that.

Speaker 1 (41:17):
I love Leslie Nielsen .
I mean I've always rest inpeace, leslie Nielsen.
But I think they do this newfilm does a great homage to him
in the movie and in the way thatit would do the homage to him
in the movie and in the way thatit would do the homage to him,
and I'll let you kind of watchit and enjoy it.

Speaker 2 (41:33):
That's great.
I'm looking forward to that, and there's a few others that
are out there too.

Speaker 1 (41:38):
We're not far, I mean speaking of September.
We're not far from the newSurvivor season.
I'm hearing things aboutSurvivor 49 as a gloomy season,
whatever that means.
I'm hearing kind of thingsabout that.

Speaker 2 (41:55):
Interesting, that's interesting.

Speaker 1 (41:57):
I don't know if it has to do with the weather or it
has to do with the contestants, but I'm hearing gloomy is like
the overarching theme of theseason.

Speaker 2 (42:06):
Interesting.

Speaker 1 (42:07):
Take that from what you know.
I don't know anything elseabout it.
Um, and of course, amazing race38 is coming, which is full of
big brother alumni.
I think it's a season we'regonna have to watch does that
start, when survivor starts aswell?
Starts when big brother endsright yeah, so I.
So I love that, I love, I love,I love extending Big Brother,

(42:29):
because you I don't know if yourealize this, maybe you do,
maybe you don't, I know, youknow this that the Winter
Olympics are coming up inFebruary and every time the
Winter Olympics have happened, cbs puts out a celebrity season
of Big Brother.
So I think we're going to haveour fellow Big Brother this year
.

Speaker 2 (42:49):
Is there any rumors about people who will be in that
or not yet?

Speaker 1 (42:51):
Not yet, but I love me some celebrity.
Big Brother, I love that stuff.

Speaker 2 (42:56):
You think Jerry O'Connell's pushing this time to
get in.

Speaker 1 (42:58):
I would love to see him play the game.
Actually, that would beinteresting to me Also.
We have House of Villainscoming up this fall.
That I'm looking forward to.
We have some good reality TVdefinitely coming out, and we'll
be covering all of it righthere Again, not weekly, but as
we can, we will definitely popon here and give you our takes.

Speaker 2 (43:22):
And hopefully we're still covering baseball a little
deeper into the fall.

Speaker 1 (43:26):
I would hope so, as long as our teams are in it.
I'm going to be a little babydiaper, and and, and, and, and,
and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and, and,
and, and, and, and, and, and.
Uh, oh, poor rocket got upsetwhen I said baby diapers no, it

(43:51):
was the doorbell.
Oh, so your cops is here, seethat.
Um, but yeah, that's, that'swhat we got so far.
Folks, um, we're, we're, we'rewatching things in, uh, the
summer, we're deep in the summerand we're seeing how things go.
It was great, great to see youand Rosie and Dylan.
Definitely Likewise yeah it was,but yeah, that's it.

(44:13):
Anything else you want to talkabout I?

Speaker 2 (44:16):
think we covered it.

Speaker 1 (44:18):
I think so too.
This has been Around the Basesthe pop culture and sports
podcast with your host.

Speaker 2 (44:23):
Charlie Seymour.

Speaker 1 (44:25):
And I'm Tim Sterberg.
