Sunny (00:09):
Hey Astro Friends, this is Astrology AF, the show that

at all illusory sky.
I'm Sunny, your hostess, withover 30 years of chart reading
experience.

Bootes (00:26):
And I'm Boots, your hostling, with almost 30 years
experience questioning innocentpeople to tears.
We're here to walk with youthrough the twinkling starlight
into the basic, the advanced andthe obscure.

Sunny (00:37):
Hi, I'm Sunny.

Bootes (00:39):
And I'm Boots.

Sunny (00:41):
And this is Astrology AF.
Welcome in to our little spoton the internet to chat about
astrology and talk about thingsthat fascinate us about
astrology.

Bootes (00:56):
Today we are going to be getting a little bit into
retrogrades.
What are they?
Why am I so scared every time Ihear the term retrograde?

Sunny (01:07):
I love it.
Yeah, I mean, there's a lot offear around retrogrades, aren't
there?
Especially, you hear Mercuryretrograde and people are like,
oh no, it's funny.
My friend of ours has a shirt,I don't know if you've seen it

(01:27):
Boots that was.
May your, may your Mercury bemore Freddie and less retrograde
.
So but yeah, I thought, Ithought, since we have a couple
of really interestingretrogrades coming up, that it

(01:52):
might be good to just talk aboutthe nature of a retrograde
planet, what it does, what itdoesn't do, you know, and how to
know whether it's going to bereally significant in your own
life.

Bootes (02:08):
Oh, california.
So, with the retrogrades thatwe have coming up, what would
you consider a retrograde, whatwould you consider to be the
most notable one approaching?

Sunny (02:24):
I think I know the answer but definitely the Venus
retrograde, for for a fewreasons.
One is Venus goes retrogradeabout every I think it's like
year and a half.
Mercury goes retrograde threeto four times a year.
So just out of the specialness, you know, early, early, early,

(02:51):
astrology was, was, was createdaround things that were abnormal
, that were unusual.
You know, it was like the sunwas out and then all of a sudden
it became dark.
You know that would have I mean, if you think about ancient

(03:12):
peoples, that would have reallymessed with your head.
You know, because the sun issupposed to be bright and shiny
and hot, you know, or at least,or at least bright, and when
it's covered up, you know it'slike what is wrong, so that you
know the gods are trying tocommunicate with us, you know,

(03:36):
and so that that's.
It was that stuff that theypaid attention to, not the more
normal movements, you know, butthe really unique, strange,
weird why is this happening?
Kind of stuff.

Bootes (03:53):
Okay, right, like the, the, with both the sun going
dark and then sometimes these, like I know that blood moons was
kind of a big deal for a lot ofcultures and still is to this
day.
Yeah, as an omen of usually notgood things.

(04:13):
I don't think most people gotexcited when they had the thing
that they had named the bloodmoon.

Sunny (04:19):
No, it wasn't exciting, but it was a momentous, okay,
okay, so, yeah, so that's early.
Astrology is all about themomentous stuff.
Oh, yep, there it is againtoday.
Yeah, right, so it's betweenthe two, and we should talk

(04:41):
about which two retrogradeswe're referring to.
We have a Venus retrogradecoming up in the sign of Leo and
then we also have a littlefarther out, but not that far, a
Mercury retrograde coming upand, as I said, mercury goes
retrograde three or four times ayear.

(05:02):
That's because of astronomy.
Okay, when we look, when we'relooking out the tropical, all of
the astrology is Earth centric.
We are looking on us, we'restanding on the surface of our

(05:22):
planet and looking out andobserving what's happening.
Okay, so the retrogrades arethe apparent backward motion of
a planet.
Now, we all have astronomy orhave learned a little something

(05:43):
about astronomy.
We know that from a not on thesurface of the earth, but just
floating in a space station, planets don't move backwards.

Bootes (05:57):
Right.

Sunny (05:58):
Right.
So you know.
That's actually one of thethings that people go well, you
know.
See, leading an astrology meansyou believe that you don't even
understand science, and ofcourse we understand science.
Astrology is described from thesurface of this planet and from

(06:21):
that, as planets orbit the sun, they appear sometimes to go
backward, right.
Because, we are and because ofwhere they are.

Bootes (06:36):
Right, because we don't stop moving either.
And so sometimes, while there, you know, venus is coming out
clear like this.
We're not Venus, but like, say,a really slow moving planet
like Uranus.
We're sitting here, beboparound like this, and Venus is
moving that slow, and so when wecome around this way, it looks
like Venus is moving slower, andthen, as we like get further

(06:59):
away from it, back here it'ssitting seemingly perfectly
still, and then you keep ongoing this way, and sometimes it
seems like it speeds up andsometimes it seems like it slows
down.
And that's also anotherconsideration that you make in
astrology is the speed of theplanet in question, and the
planet has not changed speed.
The speed relative to what itlooks like moving across the sky

(07:23):
for us is what changes.

Sunny (07:26):
Right, right.
And so over the millennia, youknow, astrologers have paid
attention.
I always say that, you know, astrologers, back then people
only have, they only had the skyto look at at night.
They didn't have theKardashians, you know.
They would just observe the,you know, the planets, the stars

(07:51):
and the behavior and things, the events that went on around
them, right, and they startednoticing a correlation or a you
know when this tends to happen, when this thing happens.
I noticed that this 10, thesekind of events tend to happen.

(08:11):
Yeah, okay, yeah, and that'sall that's what astrology is
based on.
And so, you know, when Mercurygoes retrograde, it's like
people don't communicate as well.
They're trying to do all oftheir things and there's

(08:32):
misunderstandings and there'smiscommunications Right, you
know, and which makes sensebecause Mercury is about
communication, right.
And so when Mercury is goingbackward, that what we have
learned is that it's actually aninvitation to slow down, go

(08:55):
back over what you've alreadydone and revise, review, check
and make sure that it's what youwant, you know, instead of
rushing headlong into the nextthing, because it's when we rush
headlong into the next thingthat we tend to go.

(09:16):
You know, there's errors,there's mistakes, there's things
that we would have thought, that we should have thought, but
we did not.

Bootes (09:26):
Yeah.

Sunny (09:29):
And this is the source of , I think, a lot of the
existential fear around.
Oh my God, there's a retrogradeplan, because our culture is
very much about rushing headlong.

Bootes (09:45):
We don't like when that's not going to work out.

Sunny (09:47):
No, exactly Exactly.
I mean it's like I have, youknow, negotiations, I have sales
I have to make, I have, youknow, whatever kinds of things
you know that we're doing in ourworkaday world.
Or I have travel plans.
You know I need for my travelto go smoothly Mercury is also

(10:11):
about travel so you know it's so.
It's things like that, and whenthings don't work, don't flow
smoothly and we are having, youknow, struggles and difficulties
, and maybe even you know, financial implications.
I mean, like you know, gettingin a car crash or something

(10:34):
right, you know.
I mean it can look like somepretty icky stuff, but it's.
I think it's.
A lot of it is because we'renot listening to what the
retrograde is asking us to do.
You know, slow down advice.

Bootes (10:57):
Okay, yeah, just go back and double check your work
before you turn it in type ofstuff.

Sunny (11:02):
Yep, yep, here, to make sure that your travel
arrangements are for the dateand the time and the place that
you intend to depart from, youknow, allow extra time, go, good
, go early to the you knowairport or wherever you're
departing from.
You know, get, give, give somelatitude for things, not always

(11:28):
to assume lately so and then.
So now Venus retrograde, soMercury is easy.
Mercury is about communication, traveling, reading, you know,
words, all of those things, right, venus is about our
relationships, or not just notjust relationships, but our

(11:54):
giving and taking of, of love,of Of nurture, of care, of
sweetness.
You know, at the same time, venus is also the opposite of
all those things.
So, like you know it, venus is,is unwritten rules.

(12:20):
Yeah right, like, like, oh, Iwould never dress like that.
You know, venus is what you findpleasant and, by Opposition, it
is also what you findunpleasant.
Okay, okay, it's both of those.

(12:43):
You know, we tend to talk justabout the good stuff.
I'll just, you know, this wasweakness and white, and you know
.
And sugar, literally, sugar isruled by Venus.

Bootes (12:57):
Oh, no way, I didn't know that.
Yeah, it's so.
Venus retrograde is not a goodtime to buy stock in sugar cane.

Sunny (13:09):
I mean, it's you know, and so it's you know, it's it's
our relationship with all ofthose kinds of things.
What we find pleasant, what wefind unpleasant, the unwritten
rules, as opposed to.
So, jupiter is the law, venusis the unwritten rules.

(13:31):
Okay okay when we're talkingabout where Venus is going to be
going retrograde.
Venus has a really interestingcycle, it's not?
It's like over eight years itgoes retrograde five times and
it actually forms a five pointwith star, so every fifth

(13:58):
retrograde is in the same place.

Bootes (14:01):
So that star doesn't turn it's, it is always
retrograding in the same signs, forever and all of eternity.

Sunny (14:09):
Not forever and all eternity, but for pretty much
your whole lifespan.
It does.
It does shift very slowly, butit's it's like 80 years or so,
or it, you know, really moves.
Okay okay, so.
So this is really helpful forpredictive purposes, because we

(14:35):
can look backward and and Talkabout what happened in this.
Well, okay, because retrogradeVenus retrogrades over the same
territory every eight years.
Okay, we can look back eightyears ago from now.

(14:56):
What was happening in my life?

Bootes (15:00):
Okay.

Sunny (15:00):
And you don't have to.
Yeah, this is not true ofconfessions, but it gives us,
you know.
And looking at our chart, wheredoes what house does Leo occupy
, you know?
Okay, right, the these two, between these two things, we

(15:23):
should get a pretty decent senseof what a Venus retrograde is
going to look like in anindividual's life.

Bootes (15:33):
Okay, so if I can ask about so, in a nutshell, just
very briefly, if Venus isretrograding in Leo and that is
your ascendant, that is yourfirst house, what are a few
things that might be thematic inthat event for the individual?

Sunny (15:56):
What a great question.
So having a Venus retrograde bein your first house is going to
bring up topics of yourself, your body, your mind, your
identity In the first house.
This is the most I would say.

(16:17):
This is the most potent placefor a Venus retrograde to be
happening, because it is you.
All the other 12, 11, 11, 12minus one.
All the other 11 houses areabout something other than you,

(16:37):
your money, your partners, yourchildren, you know, but the
first house is you.
Okay, so this could be.
You know, sometimes people will, when they have a Venus
retrograde in their ascendant, they will like make a major

(16:57):
change of their look.
You know, it are reallydifferent haircut, not just a
trim, but the totally differentstyle.
Change maybe the color of theirhair, maybe they buy a whole
different wardrobe.
They just have this urge tojust change, change, change, you

(17:18):
know, or things around theirappearance.
Okay, this would especially betrue, I think, for Leo, because
Leo is also about appearance, you know.
So, yeah, and you know, a lotof astrologers will say, man,

(17:42):
don't make any.
If you want to make a little, make a tiny change, see what you
think about it, evaluate andwait until the end of the
retrograde, because you may windup that you don't actually like
what you did.

Bootes (18:01):
Okay, you're just in rows of a Venus retrograde and
decided that it was a good idea,Right?
Not that mullets don't lookgood on everybody.
I am not saying that theinternet, but they're not.
They don't look good oneverybody either there are some
certain qualifications.
You need to get away with thatsocially, and Venus in

(18:24):
particular is all about thesocial niceties.
Again, those rules, unwrittenrules.

Sunny (18:29):
Right, right, yes, yeah, a Venus retrograde is also
classically and this is kind offor everybody, not just first
house Leo people, but it can bea classic.
It's a booty call, it's arelationship coming back from
the dead.

(18:49):
You know, yeah, like hey, I wasjust thinking about you.
You know you wanna getsomething to eat.

Bootes (19:00):
That's funny because I actually, as Venus slows down to
station before it gets intoretrograde and stationing is
when it looks like it's sittingstill and then before it
actually retrogrades, but as itmoves into that, this week I
actually did have almost thatexact thing happening.

(19:21):
It certainly wasn't a bootycall, but it was somebody from
my past who had a very closerelationship with, who called me
back up and was like hey, howare you doing?
I've been thinking of you andall that kind of stuff and I was
just like, hmm, venusretrograde indeed.

Sunny (19:42):
Yes, yeah, and I may be misspoke.
I was trying to be edgy.
It's not necessarily a bootycall, but it's very definitely
that could be.
That's a subset.

Bootes (19:53):
You're hoping.

Sunny (19:54):
Yeah.

Bootes (19:57):
So another, I guess.
Still on the topic of the Venusretrograde, I am a person with
Venus very strongly in my chartand it's actually my chart ruler
, which just means it's the onewith the most activity going on
in my nativity chart.
Yeah, and so as for people whomaybe have that, or even if it's

(20:22):
not their chart ruler, peoplewho just have a lot going on
with Venus in their chart, isthere the potential that it will
affect those individuals, usindividuals, more so than
somebody who has Venus and in adate chart where it doesn't have
that much power, and it's onthe side of the sun where it

(20:44):
doesn't have that much power, and it's in the 12th house where
it doesn't have that much, allthat kind of stuff?

Sunny (20:49):
Absolutely yeah, so that is one way that we can know.
Okay, so back and down yourhatches.
Venus retrograde is coming.
It's your chart ruler.
It's very permanent in yourchart, okay, Okay, or it's the.

(21:12):
There's a new term, kids, theperfected house, lord.
Ooh, yeah, right, Okay, solet's talk about that.

Bootes (21:24):
What does that mean?

Sunny (21:26):
I can't just throw that out there and not elaborate,
okay.
So what that means is that ifyou look at any natal chart,
okay, or any chart at all, you've got 12 houses, okay, and
what we do with perfected andit's P-R-O-F-E-C-T-E-D, not

(21:51):
perfected, perfected, okay.
When we're looking for theperfected house, the perfected
sign lord, we go.
The first house is the firstyear of life, okay, okay, that
is the perfected house, it isthe house that has been charged.

(22:11):
And if you think about childdevelopment, a baby, an infant,
from zero to 12 months, islearning all about themselves,
their body, right, right?
Sense right and their toes.
And then from year one to yeartwo it's the second house, from
year one to year two, it's thesecond house Near.

(22:36):
Two to year three, it's thethird house, and so on around.
I think you can see the pattern.
Yeah, okay, there are chartsand part for you so you can see,
and it just counts around andso we add up what house and sign
is perfected, okay, okay, so,like for me, I'm in a first

(22:59):
house perfection year.
This started on my lastbirthday and that sign yeah,
that sign is Gemini, and so forme this year, mercury is my
perfected house lord.
So every time Mercury goesretrograde, it's a little more

(23:22):
potent than it was last yearwhen it wasn't Mercury.
Does that make sense?

Bootes (23:28):
Yeah, so is that similar to planetary joys, and how?
So that's not related toMercury having its joy in the
first house?

Sunny (23:40):
It's no, it's not Because my mercury is not placed in the
first house, okay, but if itwas, then yes, it would be
planetary joy.
Oh it's About where the planetsare in.
Okay, in a chart.

Bootes (23:57):
Yeah, Okay, and you're just saying, because you have
the Gemini Ascendant, thatthat's the Mercury Rules, Gemini
okay gotcha, Because I have theGemini Ascendant and I'm in a
first house perfection year.

Sunny (24:12):
Mercury is the super, super Saiyan of the chart this
year.

Bootes (24:21):
Okay.

Sunny (24:21):
And so everything that Mercury does is more significant
than the rest of the time.

Bootes (24:31):
So for determining that for anybody, if you're in a
first house perfection year andlike, for instance, I'm in a
fourth house perfection yearright now, I have a Capricorn in
my fourth house, so Saturn isthe time lord for me this year.

Sunny (24:54):
Yep yep, exactly.

Bootes (24:56):
I get.
I actually get three years in arow of big Saturn stuff,
because I have Capricorn in thefourth house, aquarius in the
fifth house and then my sixthhouse is Pisces, in order of
course, but that's also where mySaturn is and I'm having a

(25:16):
Saturn return that year.
So I get Saturn perfection, saturn time lord from perfection
, saturn time lord fromperfection, and then a Saturn
return.

Sunny (25:30):
So what you're gonna come out with, I think one of two
things.
One is oh, thank God, Isurvived that.
That was the most horrible.
I hated that so much.
Or I really get what Saturn hasa lesson for me, and I really
get it, and I know what that isand I know what I'm supposed to

(25:54):
be doing.

Bootes (25:56):
Either or it might be a little bit selfish, but there
are.
With every year there are lotsof people going through a Saturn
return, and there are everybodymy age roughly is going through
a Saturn return right now.
So that might be a Saturnreturn in Pisces Specifically

(26:17):
might be a topic to cover at alater date.

Sunny (26:21):
Love that, yeah, love that.

Bootes (26:24):
Okay, all right.
So we have kind of coveredMercury and Venus retrogrades
and sort of given an idea ofwhat a retrograde is and how
that can be applied mad libstyle to any planet.
So you have revisiting, redoing, slowing down mercurial topics

(26:48):
or Venusian topics or Martiantopics when Mars retrogrades
happen.
And then for those outerplanets, you've mentioned a
little bit how you don't, ifyou're reading a natal chart,
you don't talk so much aboutsomebody having the outer

(27:08):
planets like a Neptuneretrograde, because Neptune
stays retrograde for so longthat, for whatever effects it
has on you, it's affecting theentire society in that way, not
just you Exactly, yeah, yeah.
Never ending rabbit hole, thatlittle circle on the computer,

(27:29):
on the piece of paper.
Yeah, All right well, I thinkthat we have covered just about
everything and gotten to ourtime, that we wanted to for the
day.
