A judge denied bond Saturday morning for Cedric Smith, the
suspect in a machete attack outside an Athens homeless shelter.
Athens police arrested the 33 year old Thursday evening, minutes
after the assault. Smith allegedly attacked Chris Sullins, a 53

year old shelter employee, in the parking lot of the
Advantage Homeless Day Service Center. Sullins, now in the ICU
at Grady Memorial Hospital, has severe injuries including major cuts,
brain swelling and a broken skull. Smith's criminal record in
Athens dates back to 2013, with multiple parole violations and
a previous attack. A parole violation charge has been added

to his new list of crimes. Support for Sullins is
pouring in from friends, family and strangers with donations helping

Staudinger has resigned as CEO of Athens Housing Authority less
than 18 months after taking the position. She began her
role in February of 23, succeeding Rick Parker, who retired

after 34 years as head of the Aha. For now,
Sheila Crisp, the authority's chief financial officer, will serve as
an interim CEO while the Aha board conducts a nationwide
search for a permanent replacement. Aha board chairman Walden Daniel
announced that Stuhlinger, who was under a three year contract
earning $190,000 annually, will be paid for the remainder of

her contract. Daniel described her resignation as amicable, citing organizational differences.

appointed Michael Biehn as its first executive director. The AHC,
a nonprofit dedicated to preventing and ending homelessness in Athens,
is supported by $1.08 million from the Athens-Clarke County Unified

Government through American Rescue Plan Act funds. Bean will oversee
the strategic use of these funds over the next two
and a half years, as part of the strategic plan
to reduce and prevent homelessness. Being a long time Georgia
resident holds a master's degree in public health from the
University of Georgia. His previous work at the CDC Foundation
focused on systematic factors and social determinants affecting health and homelessness.

week accused of breaking into cars. 59 year old Gregory
Garcia was arrested on Sleepy Creek Place and charged with
loitering and prowling, and attempted entering. Auto. 32 year old
Christopher McKibbin was arrested on Rosewood Place and charged with
four counts of entering auto and one attempted entering auto.

vaccine from the University of Georgia is headed to clinical

trials developed by UGA based startup Cyan VAC, LLC. The
vaccine represents a promising non-lethal alternative. Cyan vac will sponsor
a randomized, double blind phase two Bee study starting this fall.
The trial will involve 10,000 participants and will compare the
efficacy and safety of the intranasal vaccine, named Cvca, against

an FDA approved mRNA based Covid 19 vaccine. Vaccine development
is part of Project Next Gen, a US Department of
Health and Human Services initiative aimed at advancing innovative vaccines

Athens this September. The Linden House Art Center and Open
Studio membership program are hosting a Steam Roller print event.

Visitors will see the front entrance of the Art center
transform into a giant outdoor printing operation. A five ton
construction machine will be used to pull prints from large
four foot wooden blocks carved by local artists. On September 28th,
attendees can join in on the fun by helping roll
ink and pull prints, experiencing the magic of print making
with a steam roller. The large scale prints will be

hung to dry outside and then displayed at the Art
center and other Athens arts venues. This event is open
to the public, but registration is required for the carving
