Episode 143. Join host Troy Saunders as he chats with 2 of the most exemplary artist hailing from Sacramento California; Lucky Witherspoon (son of Jazz/ Blues great Jimmy Witherspoon) and Derek DOA Allen.
Lucky Witherspoon is just one member of his family gifted with the ability to supersede the norm as far as vocalists go. His mother is a singer herself, as are his aunts and uncles. It’s no wonder why his talent is evident. It’s in his DNA.
If you hear his name around town, it could be because of his current contribution to the community as a mentor and coach to young men and women, especially those in athletics, as he himself was a star athlete. Originally from Los Angeles, Lucky's family moved to Sacramento where he made a name for himself, for the most part pertaining to football. He, in fact, coached and trained his son Akhello, who is a successful NFL player. Lucky's gift did not stop there. His daughter, Lecsi Tomorrow, is also a beautiful and gifted vocalist who mirrors her father's musical prowess. His grandchildren are following suit.
Blessed with a soulful versatile voice with unmatched poetic prose, Lucky Witherspoon, both singer and songwriter, released his first full sized album at fall; "My Story Vol. 1". It is a collaborative effort with his long time friend and mentor Derek "DOA" Allen. The album is still hitting the UK R&B charts. In this episode we highlight gems. "Take Me", "Everything" (the latest single), and "Love & Direction".
Derek "DOA" Allen, also hails from Sacramento, California, is an acclaimed American bassist, award-winning songwriter, and multi-Grammy Award-winning producer. Widely known for his stage name "DOA," a moniker given to him by his best friend, the legendary Chuckii Booker, Derek has carved a legendary path in the music industry. With over twenty #1 hit records and more than forty Top 10 records to his name, his career has spanned more than three decades of groundbreaking success. As a renowned bass player, his contributions have earned him recognition for selling over one hundred million records. As a songwriter and producer, he has touched the hearts of millions, with over fifty million records sold globally.
In this episode we cover both men's history in music which goes back to the mid - nineteen eighties. Their friendship has bounded them together through out the years. To hear two men express discuss their mutual admiration for one another warmed my heart. Through the thick and thin their friendship endured.
DOA tells about working with Lionel Ritchie, Kem, Joe, Bobby Brown and being signed to Michael Jackson's publishing company. Lucky tells us how he started out as a rapper that sung his own hooks. When asked to choose between the two he decided to leave the industry and concentrate on raising his children. Now that his kids are grown he his back as if he never left.
